  • This is how to change the oil and oil filter on a 2009 - 1015 Toyota Corolla 1.8L. Very, very simple.

    2010 Toyota Corolla

    2012 Toyota Corolla
    2013 Toyota Corolla
    2014 Toyota Corolla
    2015 Toyota Corolla
    Before you begin changing your Toyota Corolla’s oil, make sure you have a level surface to work on. A clean and well lit area is ideal. Also, make sure you have an assortment of mechanic’s tools including a socket set and oil filter socket/tool. Lastly, make sure you have all the items you need to change oil like:
    Oil collection pan
    4 Quarts of oil
    Oil filter
    Funnel
    Rags
    Also, there is some debate about how often you should change your oil. In the past, it was always 3 months or 3,000 miles. Toyota says to change the oil 6 months/5,000 miles unless it is 0W-20 synthetic oil. Then, it is 1 year/10,000 miles. Whichever side of the argument you fall on, it is important to be consistent.
    Oil Change Process
    In order to change the oil, follow these steps:
    Climb under the Corolla and locate the drain oil plug. This sits below the engine.
    Slide the oil collection pan under the drain plug. Using a 14-mm socket and socket wrench loosen the drain plug.
    Oil should start draining from the engine and you can fully loosen and remove the plug to speed the process.
    Once the oil is done, you will need to locate the oil filter.
    Using an oil filter socket and socket wrench or removal tool, remove the oil filter.
    Empty the oil from the filter into the pan and wait for any additional oil to finish draining.
    Using a rag, wipe around the oil filter fitting on the engine block.
    Next, grab a clean rag and apply some new oil on it. Using this oil, wipe around the edges of the new oil filter.
    Install the new oil filter by reversing the removal instructions.
    Insert the drain plug back in and tighten it down being careful to not over tighten it.
    Open the hood and find the oil cap on top of the engine. Pour in 3.5 to 4 quarts of new oil. Take your time adding new oil to avoid making a mess and/or overfilling it.
    After filling it up, check the dipstick to make sure you have the proper amount of oil.
    Lastly, you will want to reset the maintenance light. In order to do that, turn the key to ACC, or accessory. Set your odometer on mileage, not trip, then turn off the key. Now press and hold the button you use to switch to trip, then turn they key back to ACC. The light should blink while you are holding the button down.

    I had an 05 rolla Le... I always used the entire 5 QT jug....the oil line was just above the full notch. Never any problems trying to measure 4.4 qts or whatever. Sold the rolla with 188k miles..... bulletproof

    Small tip: Lubricate inside oil filter wrench ( wipes with engine oils)..it's will come off easy from plastic filter housing

  • @njsongwriter
    @njsongwriter 4 года назад +5

    That wrench is sold under the assumption that it fits all Toyota cartridge filters but it doesn't. The teeth on the wrench do not engage with the tabs on your filter. They do on the 2.5 liter engine in a Camry or RAV4 but not on that 1.8 liter engine. The only reason it works at all is because the top part of the filter caps is the same size on both engines. Still a Motivx MX2321 would be a better fit and the teeth would engage correctly.

    I've really never seen that oil clip on a Toyota before. Mostly technicians never reuse it. I worked at Toyota in the used car department and I've seen some crazy shit when it comes to oil changes on certain models. Dealer recommends on that model to put 4.2 quarts of oil in it. I've found 4.4 is perfect. The one thing that sucks about that plastic filter housing is when it's too tight to get off. They break easily and make a 10-15 min job into a 30-1 hour job. Toyota replaces the drain plug washer every oil chance. The parts department makes a killing off a 10 cent piece.

    Thinner oils have proven less wear. You can check lab tests. This is due to the additives.

    Got the tool to remove the oil filter.Tried an impact driver first then a breaker bar. But the filter is so tight, I even bend the part where the 3/8 socket tip goes. What else can I do to get it out? Of course I removed the safety pin first.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  3 года назад +1

      Yeah guys put oil filters on way too tight sometimes. If you have room you can try stabbing a screwdriver through the oil filter to get leverage so that you can twist it off. It will make a mess when you do it so be prepared for that but at least the oil filter is off. Also make sure before you install the new filter that the old oil filter gasket is off the mounting surface. I have seen engines destroyed by guys who don’t check and they double up on oil filter gaskets and cause a huge oil leak. Mostly from the large retailer that has blue and yellow in their logo.

    What does the little clip on the side of the oilfilter housing do?

  • @robertnordeen4631
    @robertnordeen4631 2 года назад

    I suppose if you start off with a good car and no one screwed with the oil filter and got it cranked on too tight. I got a 2012 Toyota Corolla S 1.8l L4.
    I bought this car with 154k miles on. It run perfect. We changed the spark plugs.
    Drained the oil. Then the problem came.
    The plastic cap didn't budge and even broke all the tabs off with a special $50 wrench. We had to saw the cap in half and pound out the rest of it. After getting it apart in pieces the thread were wrecked. But before all this crap happened I researched videos problems and solutions. I was prepared and got the whole filter housing that is bolted to the engine. But also contacted Baxter Performance for their filter converter to convert to a spin on can filter. The cartridge filter doesn't have a drain-back oil valve. With 1-2 second of a dry start after all your oil drains back to pan, it could be a problem. If it ain't a problem to suck up the oil in that short of time then why was this spin on converter invented for my car? Not only that they make a tube converter you screw in for a quick conversion. Oh, but not my model. So I have to buy the spendy converter.

    No anti drain back valve in the oil cap. Its spring loaded cone. Its totally removable by pushing in on the metal tube and turning. Someone he man tightened the filter cap on so hard that trying to remove it with a special wrench with the notches, broke off all those tabs. we tried every clamp, no luck.

    • @itchyallover9
      @itchyallover9 4 года назад

      I use a car ramp. The oil is hot if you run the car on a cold day to get it flowing easier. If it's warm outside, just take the bolt right off. Just make sure you let the car cool down ( if you're in a cold climate ) by shutting it off for a while. You WILL get oil on your hand when you take the pan bolt off but not on the filter housing.

    • @sterlingslayden5285
      @sterlingslayden5285 4 года назад

      Best to change when hot. Wear gloves and eventually you'll figure out how to change it without getting a lot of oil on your hands. P.s. while removing the drain plug, put pressure on it while your removing it. When all the treads are out while holding pressure against it, move your hand fast.

    Is it better or the same?
    Pros and cons?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  5 лет назад +2

      Just different, it makes sense if you think about it. When there is a metal canister, the paper element is inside as well, so your just basically changing the paper element on a metal canister one. But you have to pay more for that metal canister. Ford has had that design on their diesel engines for at least 20 years.
