Thanks for your honest opinions. I had almost decided on the Juki before taking it for a test run because I have heard from many bag makers that it’s the “go to” machine for that kind of sewing. Your comments have me thinking I need to try them both for myself!!!

@@MACoutureCrafting. Exactly! Every one was steering me to an M7, which is a beautiful machine but when I sat down at it, nothing felt intuitive. I don’t want to have to think about how to do everything- it was too advanced for my skill set at the time! When I sat at the BabyLock Chorus though, it felt very natural by comparison. Different people are drawn to different things. I own a Juki domestic (first machine) and it has that same foot pedal - I’ve never accidentally cut my thread and usually forget I can, so totally a non issue for me but I can see where it wouldn’t be great for everyone! Mostly though I just appreciate the reminder to form your own conclusions! I often don’t trust a lot of the comparisons from sponsored videos but yours is refreshing! Thanks again!

I thought your comparison was interesting. Sewing Machines are kinda like power tools. Each one does something different. Personally, I have both the Juki TL18 and the Janome HD9 and I love them both for different uses. If the house caught on fire and I could only grab one machine, I would probably die from smoke inhalation trying to decide which one to grab. But then again, everyone has different needs in a machine. I use my straight stitch machines for bag making and use Tex 70 in the Juki and Tex 90 in the HD9. Only the Janome can handle Tex 90 weight thread as it is really thick. Tex thread is for more industrial type machines, not domestic. I have other machines I use for regular thread. I'm glad you like your HD9 and sorry you didn't like the TL18. Oh, the Juki does have the needle down position like the HD9. I find the presser foot height to be higher in the TL18. Yes, the HD9 does have more torque. I think it all boils down to how people use their machines as to which they like better. I think the price point on both machines to be similar, but I could be wrong. I got great prices on both my machines so I'm not a good one to ask! Different strokes for different folks! BTW, I haven't threaded my machines from scratch in years. I just cut the thread at the top, tie the new thread on and pull through. Old serger trick. You did a great video!

    • @MACoutureCrafting
      @MACoutureCrafting  2 года назад +3

I love this comment. This lets me know I was right on the money. The HD9 is my preference but I think the Juki is a lovely machine. I didn't know you can make the Juki stop in the up position? That H D9 does take the thicker thread for you & you have confirmed it feels stronger to you too. I'm just tickled pink. As much as I swear by the HD9 I still have people that was the Juki in my circle. Unfortunately not many people can have both I would never want your house to burn but I sure would love to see you have to choose. Thank you so much for spending time on my channel I really appreciate this comment.

Thank you for your review. Appreciate your transperant. I just recently purchased the Juki (even after watching your last video) I agree with two of the cons, it would be nice to have more lighting, in my case was not not an issue as it have lighting right over my sewing area and it would have been nice to have received a box to organize my feet. I also own an Elna Excellence 720Pro (Part of the janome family) and i loved my acessory box. Once of the reasons i purchased the Juki was because my Elna was having issues seweing over mulitple layers. One of the issues i have had with the Elna is the needle threader does not work. I dont know if its the same style as the HD9 but mine is definetly an issue. I have had my Juki for 2 weeks and i LOVE IT for what i sew. I enjoy your channel and keep up the honest reviews.

I have to agree with you on the back pedal thread cutter. I have (too many machines) a Baby Lock Crescendo, Janome HD9, and. Bernina 770. The Baby Lock has a separate pedal you can program, so no mistakes on accidental thread cutting. The HD9 is no nonsense. I love my Bernina, but I can’t tell you the number of times I have accidentally back pedaled and cut my thread while in the middle of appliqué or machine quilting. It makes me crazy! I end up turning the back pedal thread cutter off.

Enjoy your honest review & that cons may be pros for others & vice versa! I just got this Juki model a couple weeks ago & love it as a mid point between my industrial post bed machine (leather goods) & many domestics (vintage 1957 Necchi Super Nova my Mom got new, and 1952 & 1924 Singers that I got running again, and a Bernina 450 I bought new 13 years ago to replace a Baby Lock I bought new in '89). But I wanted a flat bed straight stitch for lined light weight leather bags and super good straight stitch for any material. The '52 Singer is great on garments for quality stitch, but low power... And features on the Juki, wow, save a lot of time. My industrial machine is heel back for the thread cutter, like the Juki, so used to that. But I still sometimes have an oops, but back stitch & resume.... But I do find it a little annoying that its body is cast aluminum, so you can use magnets to keep things handy! But it's nice that I can move it, unlike my industrial 😂.

I own the Juki Haruka, I agree with you about the lighting, and would love the bigger bobbin 😍 too.
The price point for the two machines are a bit different, the HD 9 being more $. The Juki does have a needle up/down function, and the extra tension (micro lifter) near the bobbin winder may not be what you thought it was. I think for the price class it is an excellent machine. Like you I make quilts and bags and love my machine, and all the extra feet that came with it, lol, still keep them in the plastic bag tho 😄 I haven't had to purchase any extra feet. No I am not a paid promoter, just wanted to clarify. I do have more than 1 machine tho none used as much.

Thanks so much for joining in the colors I'm so happy to have you here with me. I think the Juki is a great machine but the HD9 is absolutely for me. With the up down function the HD9 can stop in the up position I don't think the Juki had that option. And my understanding isthe micro lifter is to raise the foot with the needle down so you can turn your fabric when necessary. I love that you love your machine and that you have several machines it sounds like you are over there being awesome!

@@MACoutureCrafting In a Juki TL-2010Q girl, but I appreciate your review & comparison of the Haruka & the HD9. The microlifter increases the space under the presser foot to allow extra room to accomodate bulky seams (e.g, bag making).

I have the HD9 and I love it. But I'm a garment sewer, so I don't use quilting features. The knee-lift is so great that when i use my machine without it, my knee automatically tries to use the knee lift. I love that the space between the reverse and the thread cutter is *perfect*. I also got a cabinet to put the machine in, so it doesn't move and I have a larger space to use.

I agree I love my Haruka. Great tension adjustment, i love love the foot pedal cutting, the handle is in the right spot to balance the machine when you pick it up. The slightly higher throat space accommodates a roll of quilt better as well. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

  • @notesfromleisa-land

Thanks for the comparison. The lighting on the TL18 is indeed dim. I have not had a problem with cutting thread. My Bernina has a heel back function, so I have several decades of muscle memory to NOT put pressure on the back--I also operate my pedal with my left foot to be unencumbered with the knee lift operation. Worth noting that there is a foot pedal for the TL that is similar to what is on the HZL models. (As I wrote it, I tested my Kirei foot, and it works with the TL and does the thread cut with the right pedal.).

I researched high and low and I chose Juki over all the others. I could have bought any of them.
One thing that will prevent me from buying Janome is what the name Janome means. It means “the eye of the snake”. Juki in Japanese, is a name that means “joy rejoice happiness pleasure”. I have three Juki’s now. A serger the TL 18 straight, and a multifunction musty stitch Juki.

Your complaints are not petty. I would probably feel the same way about most of your dislikes. Especially the pedal. Also, I have the M bobbin in my longarm and love it. That is a great feature. Thank you so much for the time you spent making this comparison. It has been very helpful for me. The one thing I am having a hard time finding out about the HD9 is what needle does it take. Thanks for the comparisons. I have the Janome MC 8200QCP that I use for quilting, but I'm looking into a straight stitch machine to make some bags and I'm tired of my fabric getting sucked down into the machine, but I love the throat space. I want the Juki, but my local shop doesn't carry them and doesn't recommend them. They also told me that the Janome is all metal, so that maybe why it's heavier. But you did not say the height. Or length of the throat space. I'm looking for a straight stitch machine either juki or janome. But would be interested in mostly the height of the throat space for quilting. Along with the throat space from the needle to the right of the machine. And the tension dial on the HD9 is it difficult to set? If you could answer these questions I sure would appreciate it Thank you for the video.

I thanks for watching the video. The dial is easy to set in my opinion. There are clicks between the whole numbers. And you cannot turn off the thread cutter but it does not have to be used. I push a button to engage it. I googled the dimensions and it says 12.25 x 7. Hope this helps.

Hi from a fellow Sew yeah quilting club member 😀😀😂 I did some research and shopping around like you would mentioned in I think this video and came across a local dealer that is selling though Juki TL 18 q.v. P brand new for $1399. And they also have three of those machines that were used for I believe one quilting retreat and they were cleaned and put back in the box and they are selling those for let’s just say $1200 even.
The features that you did not like I think I’m OK with but I am going to sit down and try it out before I buy it and I have to go on Tuesday because the Labor Day sale ends. That’s like a $500 saving if I bought the new one.
My local dealer in my city sells the Janome HD nine but he doesn’t have one in the store and he expects me to pay for it even though I haven’t had a chance to practice on it. And I kind of didn’t really like his attitude. So I will have to drive into a sketchy part of town but if I go during the daytime I will be fine and I don’t have to pay sales tax if I go to Portland
The local guy was trying to tell me that he would service the machine for two years probably just once a year and unlimited classes on how to use the machine. Well he doesn’t really sell straight stitch machines and he doesn’t have this one in stock so how the heck is he supposed to show me how to use the machine? I think I’d be able to show him more after all the videos I have watched.
So we shall see how it goes on Tuesday. Dealer in Portland also sells Janome but they don’t have one on the floor and they said that I could purchase the Janome and if I did not like it I could exchange it within 90 days for something else. So I might have to watch your video again for your observations.
I do not stand up when I sew so the footpedal shouldn’t be a problem plus I will put that rubber guard on so I don’t use the cutter. And one feature that I really like about the Juki’s is the little door on the bottom you didn’t show that in your video. You just open it and you have better access to clean out the bobbin area. So that really appeals to me because the more I can clean it the less I have to worry about taking it in for service

@@MACoutureCrafting I did go to the local dealer across the river and I was able to pick up the Juki TL 18 QVP and it was what they call an open box and they said it was used for one quilting retreat. Anyway I’m very happy with it haven’t had a chance to do much sewing I’m in the process of taking care of this black cat that wandered into my backyard. But now I have them in the house in the spare room so I can hopefully concentrate on playing with my machine.
I ended up getting it for $1195 and no tax yahoo!
With all of these machines the knee lifter needs to be moved over it’s almost right in direct line with your foot I think if it was just a little bit over that would be perfect
I did try to do some quilting on one layer of cotton two layers of Insel bright and one layer of cotton batting and it did not do a good. Then I tried the Janome 1600 end it did a better job for quilting so we’ll see how it goes
