- Dobbing is a popular Betfair trading strategy for trading and using in the in-play period of horse racing markets.
You place a bet before the off and then keep that bet through to the in-play period to get matched if your horse comes into contention.
It's quite a simple strategy and quite simple to understand and implement.
In this video, we place a dob trade through the Betfair website to demonstrate the concept, then use Bet Angel to do the same thing.
There is also a follow-up video available here where we explain how to automate this strategy: -

Yes it would be great to see how you select a horse for this strategy.
Previous history of the horse
BSP and the in-play h/l. Gives a good indication as to if said horse will regularly out run odds.
Yes please more depth. I’ve seen so many of your videos, yet I watch more!
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts/selection process for DOB races.
A video on your thoughts of selections where Dobbing is more likely to occur, would be marvellous!
Really good video. I'd love to know how to choose good horses that might be likely to win on this trade.
My understanding of trading is that going in play is a big no no, I have used this stratagy myself sucessfully and posted on the forums about it only to be barraged with negative comments about going in play whIch was dissapointing considering it is supposed to be a supportive enviroment. On Aus racing my horse selection stratage is quite simple, do a small amount of form, select leaders or on pace horses via speed maps and previous form. i've often managed to get matched pre off as these runners can to get backed late in betting pre jump. i would certainly like to hear your selection critera though Peter. Keep the videos coming mate they are invaulable.
It's OK to go inplay if it's part of a structured strategy, but not if it's accidentally or your risk and reward is unbalanced.
So if you are trading pre-off and then try to exit in-play that's a definite don't do.
But if you balance out the risk and reward, which is exactly what dobbing does, then it comes down to your selection process as to whether you are profitable in the long term or not.
Yes keep feeding these golden nuggets please 🤩... also the link to the automation video 🤓👍🏼
Thanks. I haven't uploaded it just yet, but will do so soon.
Yes please, how do you choose ?
You make it look easy. I'd like to learn more about your selection process for a successful dobbing strategy.
I'd definitely appreciate a race selection video please. I've tried this on horses whose odds have halved in their last 5 races, but you guessed it, not on the 6th race I traded!
Just remember that data mining is statistical deja vu!
Hello great video can you show how to pick the best horses to dob
Yes Peter, i would like to see how you make your selections for Dobbing
Yes please to any videos on selection of horses/races!
Hi Peter, great video as always. Looking down the comments section, it would appear that a fair few of us would appreciate you sharing some of your 'secrets' regarding selecting effective contenders for Dobbing. Please don't keep the faithful waiting TOO long! ;-)
I'd be interested in your views on selections for dobbing. Thanks.
Y
Thank you. Very clear information for a beginner.
You are welcome!
Hello Peter, many thanks for all the insight you are providing. In follow up to one video just viewed I would be very interested in your thoughts / guidance on selection process for horse trading in general and particularly for the Dobbing manouevre. Thank you.
There is one thing you need to look out for and that is when the fav or a fancied horse is withdrawn right at the start and there is no time to remove it from the race. In that case you can have a massive deduction % which gives you an overall loss even if you match. Thank goodness this doesn't happen often, but if you've left a bet with KEEP set on and you're no monitoring the race you can get quite a shock. You bet will have the deduction applied, but you lay will not.
Thx 4 da video. ANother video on how to select your runner for dobbing would be great. Thank you !
did you do a follow up video
Very new to trading, again great video have been watching loads on the academy and enjoying them, how you select video would be very helpful, thank you
Noted
Would appreciate a video on help regarding the selection process...thankyou.
Very good piece Peter. However, having tried this without knowing which horse to select for any race, I have lost more than I gained. Not good for a novice until a video is uploaded regarding the selection process.
Even if you use this strategy at random you should break even unless you are doing something specifically wrong.
the 42.2% was for 6thfav and the rest
how to choose
Very beautiful
Hello Peter
Forgive me if this is a stupid question but isn’t this the same as a B2L ?
Essentially yes, but where you fix the profit on outcome, framing your objective.
You said if your next bet doesn't get matched you would lose £10 . Thats only if the horse loses , but obviously if it is running well your lay bet should get matched. Is that correct ? Sorry for the question but im new to this.
Thanks
Yes, that is correct.
Hi Peter. It would be great if you make a video about the selection because is we pick up randomly horses it’s a gamble and long term not gonna be ok.
Long term any strategy will break even if deploying without any additional thought.
Would love to see the follow up please on selection methods
Will be look for front runners
Not always, but that's helpful.
Great video
Thanks
Good evening Peter, thank you for your DoBBing video. In it you referred to ways of making good selections for this strategy. Can you provide/ have you since provided? Is it possible you can point me in the right direction. Many thanks, Sean - the novice
I need to do some follow up videos really specifically looking at this.
I'd be very interested in seeing your proces for selecting a horse for this strategy
I've got one on the 'to do' list
Would love to hear your ideas and thoughts on what makes a selection a good candidate for dobbing
Would you ever consider this method with a lay to back strategy instead. For example if you identified a weak favourite who you thought would drift in play.
Yes, you may look at this video if you are interested in in-play stuff as this will allow you to dynamically find a weak favourite in the race - ruclips.net/video/cLzjkeKTIf0/видео.html
Please do another video peter.
Hi great video. Would really like to see your process of selection.
Will do!
what it you picked higher odds for it to get matched easier in play for a lower profit, how do you work out the stake?
I think if you half the odds you double the stake. So £10 back bet at 10 (remember it's decimal odds so it's actually 9/1 , but stake is returned so= £100 ) then lay at 5.5 (9/2)for £20 . You break even if horse wins but gain £10 if horse loses. So to make a guaranteed profit
You have to multiply your odds by your stake to get a figure less than the return from your back bet (£90) . So if you layed at 6 (5/1) for £18 you break even if it wins and gain £8 if it loses, so you have to lay at £17 to get guaranteed profit. 5/1 * 17= £85 . So horse wins you get £5 , horse loses you get £7.
I hope this helps you
It's just a case of doing the maths
where is that video of how to select horces for dobbing? is there any? I spent 5 minutes searching for it and i cant find
I had to remove it, unfortunately. I'll have to produce another one.
@@betangeltv you are just playing games is what you do.
You are just wholly misunderstanding everything, that's what you do.
If you learn to engage me positively, then I can help. But if you don't I can't.
Hi, how to select horses for this strategy would be really useful.
Will upload soon
How many DOB trades do you think are available on any given day Peter? 1? 2?
You can pick odd quite a few but it's more important to focus on the quality trades, where you feel you have an edge.
For example, in shorter races, the break makes all the difference. So excluding those can give you more reliable results.
Selection video please.
How about if our selection horses didn't match for the Lay side? (wrong selection)
You lose. So long term profitability, as always, is about selection and balancing out the losses and profits.
It was easier doing it from betfair easier to understand in my opinion
Time form is my friend 😁
I'm struggling to se1e the real benefit of this strategy.
If your £10 selection wins @ 10 you get £100 back but you have laid it for £20 @ 5 so lose £100. So you're all square again.
If the horse doesn't win the race your £10 is lost but you have the £20 lay bet to come back giving a £10 profit.
Why not just lay the horse for a tenner???
Oh!!!
I seen it now.
You are laying the horse but making it risk free 👍
Does this exact method work in reverse with a lay bet initially?
If you lay first you can back at twice the price at half the stake for the same effect.
@@betangeltv CHeers amigo....but I was hoping it would be possible with betangle and set the % before hand
You can do that, just open with a lay and offset 50% with greening.
@@betangeltv won't you lose lots if the horse wins due to liability?
You would lose more if it won, but the chances of losing are much higer so it nets itself off.
What strategies are you using to select a horse? Going through betfair historic data? Your own data? A third party stats site?
I'll do a video on it. May take a week or two before it appears though.
@@betangeltv Brilliant. Looking forward to it.
I think patternform used to be good for selections but it’s no longer free
There are probably a few alternatives out there now? I've never actually uses pattern form.
Yes. Seems like selection process is essential or you go broke.
If you do it at random, you should more or less break even. So, as always, you need some sort of an edge.
Is dobbin not the name of a horse haha
How to do 'Dobbing'...? JUST DONT!!!
Bad experience?
