There is so much in this. I was born in 1962 so I was nearly two years old when Kennedy was assassinated in Nov 63. My mother was in a department store and heard the announcement over the store intercom. People remembered where they were when Kennedy was shot.
Watched this in 1983 when I was 13 years old, thought it was brilliant! Terrible & so very sad what happened, heartbreaking! 😞💔 I’ve been interested in the Kennedy’s ever since ❤️
I have seen several movies with portrayals of President Kennedy, and Martin Sheen's is top-notch. This is also my favorite movie about President Kennedy. It is excellently done! Mr. Sheen's acting captures the emotions and nuances of different parts of the movie. I could not disagree more with the negative remarks I have seen in the comments section. I am glad this movie was made!
I agree with Chuck Phillips that Sheen's portrayal was exaggerated with respect to mannerisms and the accent. "Terrible"? Perhaps not, but Greg Kinnear is the best JFK I've ever seen.
James Franciscus would have done a better job playing Kennedy he didn't exaggerate Kennedy's voice the way Sheen does. Sheen's JFK almost sounds like Mayor Quimby on the Simpsons.
I remember when Part 1 aired (Nov. 1983) on NBC. It went against ABC's "The Day After", about the nuclear attack in Kansas. I was flipping channels most of the evening. I recall the nuclear attack was as scary as seeing the assassination scene, 2 nights later
I agree about your brash assessment. Course than maybe that is how writers portrayed him and he only showed what they portrayed. New fan of Political stuff of the kennedys. :) found a book about the kids of the guy that Martin sheen portrays. wanting to read a good biography but have no idea what would suit my interests. a little overwhelmed by reading about history but have a growing love of political biographies.
I was just watching the 1987 tv movie "LBJ The Early Years". (Lyndon Johnson is brought into Parkland) - Excuse Mr. President - LBJ: Are you telling me? - Lady Bird: God Almighty
I own that movie as well as this mini series and I can tell you it was great, The new series that the History channel is also a must see. 13 days is 100% accurate.
The Overture for the Intro Credits is amazing and I actually play on every major holiday including September 11th God Bless America And Damn Those Arabs And Rest In Peace The 2997 Victims and counting

Back when the movie was being shot Martin Sheen came up and introduced himself, shaking my hand across the counter in Hyannis Pharmacy where I worked. Then he had to explain who he was. He seemed so ashamed and disappointed I have never forgotten the incident although I still get the name wrong. Sorry, Mr. Esteves...er...Sheen.
What was he ashamed/disappointed about? As for the comment about his name change, it was difficult for Latinos to get meaningful work in Hollywood. Changing his name gave him access to roles that his talent warranted.
Does ANYONE still speak in that colorful Kennedy accent? None of the more recent offspring seem to speak anything other than standard normalized American. It seems a shame for such a charming dialect -- or what approaches a dialect -- to vanish from the earth.
I have heard it described as a Mid-Atlantic accent , a mix of British and American accent. In this case, a mix of Boston and British posh accents, upper class speech. It is different from Ted's and RFK's, they all spent time in England but JFK was older. Sheen is acting his guts out here, but the accent is too high pitched and not quite clipped enough. He sounds more like his performance in "The Missiles Of October" when he played RFK. Bruce Greenwood's accent in "Thirteen Days" is less forced.
Is this the movie which ran opposite The Day After? I didn't usually watch TV. But I was determined not to watch TDA. I did sneak in during the commercials, but I've never seen the entire thing even when they were watching it on The Americans. (I held my pillow up in front of the TV). I just remember that I watched something about Kennedy that night. I don't know whether it was a two-parter or not. Back in the day, before I had a VCR, there were some things that I missed because I just couldn't stay up that late multiple nights in a row. It occurred to me later to see whether they were released on some sort of recording, and some were. And then I realized I really didn't *want* to see Masada, But I did want to see Peter the Great or maybe it was Catherine the Great. Maybe someday I will. I guess I should go look up in IMDb and see which one it was...
I'd say that the Canadian actor who did the oft-attempted JFK impersonation in the movie "Thirteen Days" was best. He was far better, I thought, than Sheen, Kinnear, Lowe, et al. But hell, how would I know? Just the opinion of an amateur historian.
Vincent Gardinia really hammed it up as Hoover. There was one scene toward the end of the 5 hour mini tv series when Gardinia who plays Hoover actually confronts JFK with Bobby in the room. Hoover pretty much is blackmailing the President. You would think, it was widely known that Hoover was gay and that was taboo in 1963. With all the power and money the Kennedy’s had, once Hoover put Bobby on notice about the President’s girlfriends, that’s when the Kennedy’s should of quietly reached out to Frank Sinatra and said, do you think you can ask Mo Mo Sam Giancana if he could get me a copy of the pic of Hoover in drag. Not to publish it. But to be prepared for the eventual showdown with Hoover and the President. I would of let Hoover talk and tell me all about the pics and wiretaps he has on me, then said, well, while you were accumulating your scrapbook on me, I got a few pics on you from the mafia guys that you say don’t exist. Take a look at a copy I have. Your eyes really shine in that shade of mascara. It looks like we have a stalemate Mr. Hoover. Your FBI job is secure and so is my files on you. I’m just glad we are both very prudent people to secure each other’s files. It looks like we have a stand-off Mr. Hoover. Remember, people who live in glass houses should never throw stones. After that, I wouldn’t have to worry about Hoover anymore. I wouldn’t be concerned about his directorship in the FBI. The guy was so old. He died in office a few years after that. Jack couldn’t do that because Bobby was going after the mob. I’d play it differently. If I needed their help to get elected, why would I be hurting them once I get the job. I’m not going to be helping with their criminal activity but I wouldn’t be going after them either. Besides, if Giancana would do me that valuable favor to secure me a copy of Hoover in drag, I would let him know, I consider this a personal favor to get Hoover off my back. I would have not used the pic to embarrass Hoover and make it public, just as a stalemate tactic and to give him a moment of pause. You say, you don’t like sex and occupants in the White House doing derelict acts, how’s it going to look to have the man that stopped Dillinger in his tracks wearing a dress? I would catch him off guard. He’s coming into my office to blackmail me, I’d let him give his speech, while all along I’d have the copy of the photo in my jacket. I’d want Bobby to be with me during the meeting just to witness Hoover’s shock and to see that self-righteous smirk get wiped right off his sweet little face. You see, by Bobby going after the mob, it took off some valuable assets that the President could of had to protect himself against a creep like Hoover. After putting Hoover on notice with the photo, what’s he going to do? I’d stick it right back to him. You’re secret is safe with me Mr. Hoover. I’d take a peek a Bobby and watch his face as he tries to hold in his laughter. Nobody ever had Hoover in their pocket except the mob. I’d be working on getting that photo of Hoover even before I got sworn in. There’s only one way to play it with Hoover, a mutual stand-off. Besides, he’s got pics of me and Marilyn Monroe and some sexy model types. I got a pic of him in drag. What’s more of an abomination for 1963? I may even force him to do his Joan Crawford imitation before I dismiss his silly ass from my office.

Agreed. Martin and Bruce do an excellent Job. Greg Kinnear..is a distant third.
they don't make mini-series like this anymore, thank God
Two best actors who played JFK, imo: Greg Kinnear (recently) and Patrick Dempsey as young JFK in "Reckless youth" (nineties).
I would add William Devane in 1974's "The Missiles Of October"
Remember watching this back in '83 and liking Sheen's portrayal, but now it looks not as good as then....reckon Shea did a good job though!
WHAT ever became of that delightfully unique Kennedy accent? With the death of Teddy, I suppose it sort of became extinct because WHO still uses it?
MHSRIP this was extremely cruel & unwarranted. RIP to all the fallen Kennedy Angels
It’s surreal when you watch the intro again after the ending...

There is a reason they keep casting Sheen as President....
Martin Sheen's Boston accent is hilarious, just plain "NO".
They made two miniseries about George Washington in the 80's. I don't know too much about that cuz I haven't seen it yet.
Watch thirteen days such a great film on the cuban missile crisis and how JFK saved this country but also the world.
