Nothing wrong with being a post card, as long as you have it clean everyday. In the military you're literally a walking postcard.

Its better to be a postcard instead of a mess. But its better to have some variety in the look and also put together then it is to be a postcard.

Oddly enough, I've always considered my usual garb as a uniform, it's utilitarian and smart-casual.

My grandfather was in the army for 26 years, he was a paratrooper in the 82nd, 13th, and 11th airborne in ww2. He served in the 24th infantry in Korea, and signal corps in Vietnam. He always had clean cut hair, shaved beard, and had great posture and physical health. He was a real man and radiated badassery and confidence, he had a great mustache that he also kept trim. Today he would’ve been 94. RIP, Papa

The thing I like about this channel is it's very direct and to the point. I was raised in an environment with very little directions and rules. Lots of fun in some cases, but I'm really starting to see some consequences from a lack of discipline.
I take everything with a grain of salt, but this has definitely given some food for thought. Will try to apply a few things to make things better.

This is actually such a great video.
When I was in the reserves in Ireland our Corporal said to us "Your always on parade lads, even when your at home out of the uniform"
This stuck with me & has always served me very well at work when I was in Events trying to become Crew Chef (Ended up having three management positions) And Even now that I'm in construction.
(It's part of whats called "The halo effect")
Always looking the part dose put you ahead & It helps me have more respect & pride for myself, I feel terrible walking around in rags, And people Noticeable treat you worse.

How you dress is important…but its not everything. I’m a PACU (recovery room) nurse, so I literally wear hospital-laundered green scrubs with a t-shirt and tennis shoes everyday-it’s an infection-prevention measure. I pay attention to make sure my hair is neatly pulled back and covered and my fingernails trimmed, but I project confidence and care primarily with my voice and facial expression. I speak well and communicate professionally.
On certain work occasions, I do have cause to follow the suggestions you make (which are extremely male-oriented by the way): job interviews, Zoom meetings when I am not working at the hospital, classes, etc. But I thought I’d put it out there that clothes are just one part of the equation of projecting professionalism.

When I was in the Sheriffs Academy we were told of a deputy who was killed by a gang member. When asked why he killed the deputy, the gang members response was something to the effect of "He looked sloppy." Appearance matters.

All good advice. Sometimes personal appearance counts and sometimes it does not. At Airborne School, morning inspection included having shined the inside of our brass belt buckles; at Ranger School, we put tape over our belt buckles and wore field trou which, for the most part, had the entire crotches burnt out from sleeping leaning on a tree with Sterno cans between our legs. At one school, personal appearance was all at the beginning of the day; in the other school, it mattered not in the least. Lesson: circumstances apply.

The most important point here, I think, is to be in good shape.
From my experience; I like dress clean with a regular to loose clothing fit. And apparently I dress like a postcard. But none of that seems to matter. I keep myself in good shape but because of my prefered clothing style no one can tell how muscular I really am. When a situation arises where people see me topless they almost have a shock effect because of how well I maintain my body. Then no matter how I dress I get an increased amount of respect. Now I do recognize that this depends whether or not people see me topless (which I try to avoid) or not.

If people are going to judge you on the clothes you're wearing ahead of the actions you perform, then they aren't the kind of people you should be associating yourself with.
Honestly, if someone tries that hard to look presentable it makes me wonder what they're trying to distract me from. As the old addage goes, apperances can be deceptive.
Some of the scruffiest people I've met have been the best people. Some of them have gone on to do great things. On the other hand, some of the best dressed people I've known turn out to be scumbags and conmen. They dress well because they want you to focus on how they look and how confident they seem, instead of the shitty things they are doing while your back is turned.
Lawyers, investment bankers, politicians, preachers, snake oil salesmen. All dress to impress. All stab you in the back.
And if you need to dress well to feel good about yourself it might be worth analysing why. Apperances are only skin deep. You can change the wrapping paper but it wont help if you don't like what's inside the package.

    • @Skippy19812
      @Skippy19812 5 лет назад +1

@goldenhotdogs My point being that if someone bases their opinion of others on something as facile as appearance, then they're likely the kind of person who forms and nurtures shallow bonds. These people aren't the kind who can be trusted or relied upon in the long term.
Unless you're a confidence trickster who is looking to manipulate others, your apperance shouldn't be front and center to who you are as a person.
What you think of as "using to your advantage" I think of as robbing people of the chance to make an accurate assesment. It's dishonest. Sure it might be a very mild form of dishonesty, but the fact that you're willing to *knowingly* engage in it speaks volumes as to your character.
If you want to stand out and actually be someone - rather than giving the "appearance" of being someone - then you need to focus on your actions, not on your appearance.
Go volunteer as an aid worker, learn something new, build something, help a friend or family member. These are the things that are important, not how shiny your new shoes are.

This advice is certainly warranted. Just go to any airport and look at the attire of people flying. I believe in comfort, but everyone should have some level of pride and self respect, yet I see people flying in (literally) their pajamas.

I'm 57 years old and drive a truck for a living. I'm 6'2" and a meaningful 215 lbs.. I wear a brown tee shirt and either green or dark blue Carhart's every day. In cool weather I add a brown sweat shirt. I don't own a suit, though I do have some collared shirts, which I haven't worn in years. I don't own jewelery. I don't have to give any thought at all about what I'm going to wear on any given day. I am content. Though I get what your saying... )

I’m ex UK army & it seems that it’s exactly the same across the pond in the US army. If you get an injury you are allowed to wear trainers instead of boots. I’ve always thought the same, that it looks awful & in my day the boots were boots, but as I went through my time they started issuing better boots which are probably better for you as they provide more protection & support than wearing trainers. When I saw people in trainers wearing there uniform it made me cringe & I hoped that nobody outside of the camp would see it as it’s embarrassing for the entire unit IMOH. Also he hit the nail on the head of army wives. They had a “uniform” of tight gym leggings & a top. Sad to say that many really shouldn’t be wearing such cloths. We used to joke about it, my wife never wore that stuff. She was German though as we met over there. I like the shoes he wears but not sure about the YSL belt. That’s something I wouldn’t wear.

Generally I am pretty lazy with these things when I am just doing things at home or hanging out with people at their house. When I am at work or an event though, I always do my best to pay attention to details and look professional. (Proper haircut, not scruffy, shoes or boots polished, appropriate attire, etc.) This video has taught me a few things that I never though of though. For example; I never even heard of a gig line until now. Thank you

    Addendums:
    - Colors
Certain colors pair well. Blue shirts and tan pants pair well. Black and red pair well. Olive green and grey pair well.
    - Hair (men)
Hair in most cases looks best tapered. The top should always be longer than the sides. The front should always be longer than the back. Long side burns connecting to beards only look good on people with the right facial structure. Etching is stupid, faddish and unprofessional and will summarily get you judged as a fuckboy in most professional circles.
    - Untucked collared shirts
If you are wearing a collared shirt and do not want to tuck it in, unbutton the top one or two buttons, remove your tie, unbutton the collar buttons if any, and neatly roll your sleeves, anywhere from your halfway up your forearm to two finger lengths above your elbow. This is good nightclub or bar attire and also coupled with neutral colored slacks excellent for corporate casual. In this mode, clean skate shoes may be worn out on the town, but not in a professional environment.
    - Shirt size and cut
A collared shirt may be slightly too big but so long as it generally contours to your body shape and fits well on your chest and shoulders and is made of quality material you will be fine.
Finally invest in nicely cut polo shirts for everyday casual wear outside your home.

To this day I still shave my face and my bald head. I will also take the time to shop for good fitting clothes. Women will take notice even though they may not say something. I once went on a date with a woman and man she looked stunning. Later that day she mentioned how when she initially met me she felt in her own words “put ashamed because I out dressed her”
To end my comment I will give you a life principle I live by.
Always try to be the best dressed man in the room.

That being said, as a person that’s about to enlist myself, thank you for your service. I will follow these rules while in uniform. I know this is super late and that’s relatable. I have a hard time caring about anything. But people address you based on how you present yourself. So I put the effort into looking good and I tend to get my way with a lot less fuss. People treat attractive people way better than they do to a slob. It’s worth the effort. Hopefully you figured that out too.

Exactly who do you think it is that makes up the military? We are all civilians before entering the military, and we all once again are civilians upon detachment from service. So let's cut the crap. In my dad's time, WW2, nearly 85 -90% of men served, today, 2001 - 2019, it might be about 40% of men under 45. Still, quite a few of the population were civilian, then military, and back to civilian. So again, who exactly do you think makes up the military? Citizen soldiers, that's who.
