Oh, oh... Today, my favorite young female Chinese singer ! This is such a great idea, especially considering she’ll be turning 26 in just two days (December 22). In this video, performing in front of a prestigious jury (Tan Wei Wei, JJ Lin, Jane Zhang and Hu Tiger), she was only 19. If you had watched just a few seconds longer, you would have seen a dolphin-note duel between her and Jane on Diva Dance and Opera 2. From that moment, both Jane and Xiao Yun would share the nickname "Dolphin Princess." But Xiao Yun has other nicknames too, like "The Lung," thanks to her 25-second sustains, or "Bread" because apart from singing, her favorite things in life are eating and cooking (apparently, Gigi de Lana shares this trait). She’s also called "Ghost" or "Wink XY." Who is Huang Xiao Yun ? Huang is her family name (which means "yellow"), and Xiao Yun (Sky Cloud) is her given name. She is not Han like 98% of Chinese people ; she belongs to a minority ethnic group, the Buyi, descendants of the Thais (with a slight Tibetan mix). Her parents are music teachers in a rural area. Xiao Yun started playing drums at the age of 2, then learned piano, guitar, and finally singing before entering China’s most prestigious Bel Canto conservatory, from which she graduated first in her class at the age of 23. At 16, she competed in The Voice (All By Myself), and at 19, here she is in this video auditioning with Upwards to the Moon in the Dream Voice 3 competition. At 21, she competed in The Singer 2020 (Your Answer), and at 22, she experienced her first mega-hit with Xing Chen Da Hai (The Sea of Stars), amassing 4 billion views in just two weeks on Douyin. Hampered by a mediocre producer and slowed down by the pandemic, she has stagnated a bit in recent years. But after signing with Warner this summer, she’s been unstoppable, producing music videos, giving concerts, releasing albums, and making impactful collaborations, including three with Dimash. And... I almost forgot : Xiao Yun is absolutely adorable !
She is really a new-generation singer with excellent singing skills. Unfortunately, she is now in an awkward situation in China. Many so-called professionals criticize her for singing without emotion, which has led her to lose herself a bit and fail to find a performance style that suits her.

I agree about G.E.M., whom I adore, Alan, who is astonishing, and Yun Duo, who is incredibly spectacular with her high notes, but let’s not forget some other huge female singers of China like Gong Lin Na, Han Hong, Huang Qi Shan, Gong Shuang, Tan Wei Wei, Tan Jing, Daiqing Tana, Yang Jie Ma, Shang Wen Jie, Su Yun Ying, and of course the late Teresa Teng, Coco Lee and Yao Bei Na. And I’m surely forgetting so many others myself.
