    I was there - the communal gasp from the audience when Hooky started the bass riff was universal and instant, then the jam-packed crowd moved as one, and sang along - it was unbelievably so emotional.

      Was this the first time that they had played this track (again)? Considering they said after Ian's death that they wouldn't use any tracks or even the Joy division name moving forward, it must have been a very unique experience if it wasn't expected. Thanks for sharing that you were there. The song means a great deal to me.

    Monday, May 9th 1983. The first time I saw New Order, at The Tower Ballroom, Birmingham. It was the day after my 19th birthday.Support were James! I still have my ticket (number 0202) and it cost £3.50!!!!! New Order had always said they would never play a Joy Division song live (other than Ceremony/In A Lonely Place, obviously) so it was a huge surprise when they opened with Love Will Tear Us Apart (it was the first time they'd played a Joy Division song live). The following Saturday I went to Birmingham Rag Market and bought an audio cassette of the gig.....and I still have it! I remember there was a strange tape playing before the New Order came on stage, an Elvis Presley interview!? Just played the tape now and the interview is still on there, it also includes a young child singing in French and a New York rap/hip hop thing. Very odd, and it got the crowd restless at the time. All was forgiven when we heard the opening of Love Will Tear Us Apart. Full set list that night was: Love Will Tear Us Apart, Age Of Consent, Blue Monday, Senses, Truth, Leave Me Alone, Denial, Everything's Gone Green, Temptation, Confusion. So....the first time I saw New Order was May 9th, 1983 and they opened with the greatest song ever written. The last time I saw them (sadly minus Hooky) was April 29, 2012 and they finished with the very same song! Beautiful.

      Carl Thornton think they were celebrating Ian. May... Birmingham... But It was Terry Mason's birthday indeed.

      The song sang in French by a young child could be this one, sang by Nico and Alain Delon's son (Nico lived in Manchester at this time): ruclips.net/video/5SPhkxppOjM/видео.html

    I was 12 years old in 1983.
    I hear Joy Division and in 1984 I met New Order.
    Here in Brazil New Order was successful in 80's and 90's.

    Does anyone also recall how late they came on, the emulator/ fairlight crashing, the swearing from on stage as it did, and the twenty min break etc whilst it was fixed ....as well as the huge human Tsunami of post punk people who came to life, as Echo and the Bunnymen came on over the p.a and a hug3 wave of bodies moved like one huge wave on the Tower floor . As well as the Taxis everyone had to get home because it finished so late ? I also remember as a fellow muso being very impressed that the James bassist an drummer switched roles half way through ? .Quite a night to remember really !

      Yes I remember the place went bananas when The Back Of Love by the Bunnymen came on and even more bananas (if that's possible) when they opened with Love Will Tear Us Apart. One of the best times I've seen New Order and one of the best gigs I've witnessed. On this day 36 years ago.

    I was there. It was Rob Gretton's Birthday, and they ended the track with "Happy Birthday Rob" It was 9th May 1983.
    The french pre-taped introduction was Le Petit Chevalier and there as some Africca Bombatta pre-recorded and other stuff too before they took the stage. I had a bootleg tape of the gig which I have lost. I can remember that on the dancefloor the plastic palm trees, which were part of the fixtures, were rocking!

    Must of been one of the first times they played this as 'New Order', but why oh why do they always play the early (Jan'80) 'Pennine' version? What became the single is the template for everything.

      @pjcmusicoutlet 10 месяцев назад +3

      Because that was the original version and the only version that they played live as Joy Division.

    Loving all these comments from people who were there! I wouldn’t even be born for another decade, and I wouldn’t discover their music until two decades after that, but I’m glad to be a fan for the past few years now and get to live vicariously through preserved performances, photos, and comments online. Hoping to see New Order on their upcoming american tour if the pandemic ever ends, even though their closest performance is still gonna be a 12 hour drive from me. They really unite people and make you feel something. Much love to all the fellow fans here 🖤
