Jack O'Lantern's Origin: Billy and Mandy's Jacked Up Halloween

- The origin story from the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy Halloween special.
I extracted the clip after downloading the following review: • Billy and Mandy's Jack... since I could not find the origin clip anywhere else.
The story is essentially a retelling of the tale of Stingy Jack, replacing The Devil with The Grim Reaper, replacing Jack's being a foul man with being a prankster that goes too far, and changing Jack's fate from wandering the world as a lost soul to being immortal but unable to go out into society because of his Jack-o-Lantern head. They even lampshade it on the Big Boogey Adventures movie.
Nobody has anything to say about Endsville existing in the medieval era even though its an American town
Yup just like how jack was somehow able to carve a face on a pumpkin and use it as his head 🤣🤣
Lol i mean Mandy did mention endsville having a queen
"wait Endville had a queen?" Is a nice subtle little joke
Well it could be a New England town that was founded in the 1600s by early English settlers. Thus it would look pretty medieval (more renaissance actually) and would have a queen.

Can't sugar coat the medieval times.
And that is why it was fun
I loved how Billy and Mandy seemed to forget their friend is the one who harvests souls for the afterlife. Mandy doesn't care, having plans for immortality, but poor Billy.
Billy's an Idiot. I doubt he cared either.
Well Billy may think he's a friend to Mandy he's her slave. And Billy is dumb enough and sturdy enough to be a decent puppet or whatever but I think a part of her does consider him her friend. At least enough she's always at his house despite his short comings.
@dbzcupcake it's rare but she actually does care about him but it's hard to show since she has to deal with his massive stupidity
@@aliostrowski1935I'd just put a curse in jack!
@@brianwhite9339 Immortality is its own curse.
Seeing this again makes me realize something that I didn't as a kid: Billy and Mandy were very lucky Grim fell victim to hubris and pride when they met him and got him to agree to a limbo game for Mr. Snuggles. If that weren't the case and Grim chose not to underestimate a couple of kids, they'd likely end up being friends with Jack O' Lantern with a common thread being ending up with worse lives as a result of trying to cheat death.
It's a good life lesson to never underestimate your opponent
I do feel bad for Grimm , Mandy technically cheated
@@ThePx42 Yes. After Grim deliberately tried to stack the deck and the game in his favour.
@@ezrawyvern6795 To be fair, Grimm was following the rules of Limbo. The bar would've reached that low height eventually.
@@ShyBiiteVT problem was that it was entirely impossible for those 2 to even go that low. Grim was able to do it because he is a magical skeleton. And besides it was basically cheating to go that low. Mandy just simply made things fair by cheating herself. Besides the difference between jack and billy and mandy was that made a bet and won, while jack made a deal that was in his favor .
Let this be a lesson: no matter how good of a leverage you have on someone, if they have found a loophole in the bargain they WILL use it.
The details of the bargain will never be disclosed by Jack. It's a real balance, and there is real big prices. Apparently Jack knew and still didn't give a fawk. Jack is ripped.
Which is part of what makes the deal Mandy orchestrated so brilliant: It's so simple, but it also protects them from any chance of Grim actually hurting them. It gives the kids plenty of loopholes and leverage while removing any such advantage for Grim.
You’re right, Grim couldn’t harm them in any way directly. But if an accident or if someone were to cause a fatality to the kids that’s a different story. Remember lord pain he could kill them even if he didn’t in the end.
@@SuperStar-lb8gf I remember that time episode. Grimn just let their hourglasses empty, preventing them from ever being born. But karma hit him as he realized he had no one to help flip his hourglass, and he never existed either.
I love the theory the grim in the TV show is actually just playing dumb. In reality he’s training Billy and Mandy for a greater purpose. And the reason he looks so comical is because both Billy and Mandy view death as just a joke.
Well after spending so much time with him, you start to notice the metaphor, "Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover"
If I were Grim I would have cursed Jack so his pranks would always backfire on him
@@brianwhite9339 or pretend to make the deal and Jack is just electrocuted for affects and he's still killable.
Man this is some Shin Megami Tensei levels of deep writing
I can see Billy as a servant of the afterlife as a Psychopomp, comfortably guiding people to whichever end of the afterlife they get sent to. Basically, he's your Uber driver as soon as you die.
All I see Mandy as is maybe, just maybe, a mean version of St. Peter: passing judgements to see whether or not you're worthy of entering Heaven.
The only other option is she rules hell as the true princess of Darkness, replacing and killing Satan.
Im kind of surprised Grim didn’t use that “loophole” with the kids.
Friends for all eternity? Okay but I’m taking your heads.
Friends don't kill friends, though. That's the problem with his word choice.
@@PyroGothNerd Grim did not kill him though, just took his head off.
@@funkmantim2661 Still not a friendly thing to do
@@PyroGothNerd Considering that both Billy and Mandy have done worse things to him? I don't think the contract has any specifics behind it other than to be friends.
I think the difference in the situation... other than just needing a headless Jack, was that Grim wasnt after Billy and Mandy... He was after Billy's hamster. Also unlike Jack who'd stolen his scythe, Grim willingly agreed to the game of Limbo out of pride.
"Yep!" I love how casual he said it, 'I cut a guy's head off! [Eats some candy like its no big deal]' :)
I agree! It's freakin' hilarious!

All in a day's work for the Grim Reaper
Death has no preference after all
Death comes for everyone.
One thing I like about Jack’s backstory is that it does reference Jack Stingy, the reason why Jack-O-Lanterns are a Halloween tradition. Much like Jack, Stingy was a trickster whose restless spirit roamed the earth. Stingy was refused entrance into heaven and hell and we carve Jack-O-Lanterns to ward off his spirit.
Damn, the guy so evil even hell does not grant him permission to enter😂😂
Interesting. The story I was told relates to the sleepy hollow story. In the story the headless horseman hunts the night of Halloween in search of his head lost in the revolutionary War. Should an unlucky soul happen upon the horseman they would have to run to the nearest bridge or offer a pumpkin lantern with a face carved into it. Should a person do neither they will lose their head to the horseman.
@@brianljh8982 Not exactly. You see, Jack was slated to go to Hell, and the Devil himself went to collect. But Jack tricked the Devil into touching a tree that Jack promptly carved a cross into, trapping the Devil. Jack refused to let him go until he swore to never allow Jack into Hell. The deal was struck, and Jack was guaranteed to never be forced into Hell. The problem was, he was never going to get into Heaven, so when he was turned away at Heaven’s gates and sent to Hell’s gates, the Devil said that he couldn’t enter. So, the Devil took an ember from Hell, put it in a turnip, and sent Jack to wander the space between Heaven and Hell for eternity, with only the turnip lantern to light his way. The lantern got turned into a pumpkin later, probably because it’s easier to carve out and turn into a lanter than a turnip.
I was told that Stingy Jack is the one who carries the lantern to light his way at night. In some tellings the lantern is lit with hellfire and in others it's lit with Jack's soul.
@@brianljh8982in the version I heard Jack didn't go to Hell because he made the devil swear to never bring him there, however due to his misdeeds in life he was barred from heaven as well. As a result he was cursed to wander the earth forever.
Billy: You cut his head off?!
Grim: Yep.
Melissa Ann Mandy: WOW Grim Impressive Didn’t Think You Had It In You.
He was going to be dead anyway.
@@neo-didact9285 he would have been dead permanently if he didn't ask for eternity which made him immortal for almost a thousand years.
Back when CN didn’t beat around the bush for one second.
It's a fitting punishment for him. Rather then pranking every single day and being a nusciance, he took his head to prevent him from doing what he wanted forevermore. Since he had no head and used a pumpkin instead he would be a freak towards others. Only coming out once a year to do his pranks where he isn't judged or pitted as a freak on a day you can basically be what you want.
Jack pulled pranks with no regard for other people's feelings, and he wanted to become immortal, something people would do ANYTHING for, just so he could keep on pranking, so he honestly had it coming. And he literally lived long enough to see himself become a villain.

The fact grim was so casual when he explained how he cut a guy's head off was one of the darkest moment in this show
_The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy_ is one of those shows that makes you wonder "How did this get put on Air?"
However, at the same time, it kinda also teaches us certain lessons. For example, Jack losing his life and his head is karma for tricking everyone he ever came across despite not actually being a bad person.
Then, Grim ultimately causing Endsville to be taken over by Jack since he cut his head off is also karma.
It's a weird way of saying "Don't do bad things, and bad things won't happen to you" in a sense.

Jack o lantern seems like a combination of the april fool (fairly oddparents), loki (marvel comics), and scarecrow (batman). A brilliant villain imo!
Actually, he's based loosely on Stingy Jack, aka the origin of the Jack O'Lantern
Jack would probably get pissed if you called him that last one.
One legend goes that a man named Jack who was particularly fond of also playing tricks and messing with people's heads once got lost in the woods. While he was walking through the woods, he bumped into the Devil himself. When the Devil asked Jack why he was in the woods, Jack told him he was there to look for treasure (the reason he was there differs from story to story), but had gotten lost. The Devil said he could help Jack out of the woods, if in return he tells him where the treasure is. Jack of course thinking up a quick scheme for the Devil, agreed to his terms. So, the Devil made a Lantern for Jack using a candle that would never go out and a simple pumpkin growing in the woods. Afterwards, Jack pointed to the highest tree in the woods and told the Devil to climb it and he'd see the treasure. So, the Devil did. Now I'm not sure whether or not he saw the treasure, but when the Devil was all the way at the top, he had a problem climbing down and asked Jack for help. Jack mocked the Devil and said he fell for his joke, Jack began to leave but before he did, the Devil cursed him to forever walk the woods with his Jack O Lantern, which now if you see it's glow late one autmn night, something terrible will happen, Jack had become an omen.
Loki talked his way out of getting his head cut off - pointed out that he agreed to let two of the dwarves take his head if they won the contest against the other two dwarves but that he never said that they could cut his neck. So they just sewed his lips shut instead.
@@snakefang1123 the version I like more is that Jack tricked the Devil twice within the course of two years. Once was the Tree making him promise to not claim his soul that year and he’d let the Devil climb down since Jack was holding a Cross to the Tree preventing him from climbing down. The next year the Devil tries again only for Jack to agree to go but requested one last drink after his drink at a pub he tell the Devil he has no money to pay it off and asked the Devil to turn into a coin so he could pay. The Devil agrees and Jack immediately pockets the Devil in the same pocket holding his cross. He forces the Devil to agree to NEVER claim his soul. Eventually Jack anger villagers with his scams and tricks and he gets his head cut off. He tries to enter Heaven but his soul is clouded with too much greed and selfishness to ever enter Heaven, Jack tries to enter Hell but the Devil denies entry because it was his deal to never claim his soul. Jack as a spirit is freezing eternally because he is unable to feel the warmth of Heaven or even Hell and begs the Devil for something to keep warm. The Devil gives him a single ember from Hell, because it’s an ember from Hell it will never go out but as it’s only an ember will never be enough to make him feel completely warm. Jack returns to his headless body and carves a face into a Pumpkin he puts the ember into the makeshift lantern to keep himself warm and light his way. This is also why we use Jack o Lanterns, because they act as a way to trick demons into keeping away from us because they think Jack lives there.
As I watch this clip over and over, I loved the way he told the story and the logic of death within the series was amazing. Someone doesn’t die until the Grim Reaper officially greets them and comes with him to the realm of the dead. I also love a classic story of a human or god/goddess of mischief being taught a lesson from Medellin with a higher deity. As I’ve read all across different cultures no god, goddess or immortals deity appreciates being medelled with or being the butt of the joke and the one that caused all the chaos learns their lesson at the hands of the immortal being they decided to mess with. They really did this story well in the Halloween special.
😂
I love how he says "yep" in such a nonchalant, "nobody (besides you two) messes with me" sort of way.
😂
2:16 Looks like Jack lives by Roger Rabbit’s philosophy:

That Knight was hard as hell though and nobody is talking about it. This man showed up, with his hard as theme in the background, killed a man and left without a word
If nothing else,he is efficient.
He was actually so effective that Jack fears that Knight hundreds of years later. Erwin shows up as a Knight and scares the shot out of Jack until he realizes it’s some stupid kid.
Jack, the reason they created the word Jackass.
So, you know how at the end of this special, Jack gets his head smashed off-screen by some demons in hell? Makes me wonder, what did Jack use as a head after that, since his old one got smashed? Also, judging by the way his voice sounds while he was laughing in his sleep, his voice changed when he used a pumpkin for a head. Does that mean that depending on what he's using for a head, his voice changes?
Those are good questions.
Also, it's my experience that a person's laugh can sound completely different than their voice. EX: The deep voiced person with a high-pitched giggle.
