Worth noting normal is busted in gen 1 too. Fighting moves sucked, steel doesn’t exist to resist it, and both Body Slam and Hyper Beam were crazy good, especially compared to how bad physical attacks were for other types besides ground. Gengar did exist as an immunity but got slammed by earthquake.
@@venomgaming7014 the Big 3 of Gen 1 OU includes 2 you forgot, Snorlax and Chansey. Tauros, Snorlax, and Chansey were, in some combination, required on a team.
Gen 1 Hyper Beam is dope! If you KO'd the opposing pokemon, then you didn't have to recharge on the next turn and if you KO'd another, the list goes on!
One thing I think is worth mentioning, despite not actually changing the type chart, is the effects in battle each type gave. Starting in Gen 6 Grass types were immune to powder moves and leech seed, Fire immune to Burn, Electric immune to Paralysis, Poison immune to Poison, and Ice immune to Freeze. Poison types can not miss with the move Toxic. Dark type then gained immunity to status moves from Prankster Pokémon. Ice type got a new weather in Snowscape in Gen 9 which gave them a Defense buff.
Fun fact, The ghost type was originally meant to be super effective on psychics even in gen 1, but werent cause of a bug. Cause Gen 1 is held together with spit and tape
@@Pit_Icarus in some mythologies & popular media, many insects & bugs were enemies of smaller fae creatures. Plus to help to the stability of the game.
@@Pit_Icarus Bug is the most useless type and has very little going for it, while Fairy is currently the strongest type. With stronger Bug types Pokemon and moves, having a Bug weakness actually means something now. Having a realistic reason doesn't really matter when there are matchups like Electric being neutral to Steel for the same reason Electric is super effective against Water.
@@Frank_ErzThat's not entirely true. Bug isn't half bad defensively: 3 weaknesses and 3 resistances isn't awful, specially since one of these resists is to Ground, which is really rare. The problem with Bug is offence. They should've Def made it strong to Fairy. Imagine being a lil Tinkerbell going about your like and you come against some bees. Horrifying.
The funny thing is that since Sylveon was created to promote Fairy type you can say that the last time they designed eeveelutions was not 10 years ago but 17 years ago, so it's entirely possible to have a person who wants a new type just to have a new eeveelution
I think they introduce Eeveelutions more based on a brand new gimmick they wanna promote than a type, otherwise we would've gotten a Steel one instead of a Psychic one, and the Grass and Ice ones wouldn't exist because those aren't new types, and Gamefreak doesn't seem to really wanna have an eeveelution for all types: Espeon and Umbreon may've been created to promote the Day and Night cycles as well as the Friendship stat introduced in Johto Leafeon and Glaceon to promote the more unconventual evolution methods (that were often locked to the post game x,d) introduced in Sinnoh, and these two may be the reason why we didn't get more Eeveelutions like that, because from Gen 8 onwards they just turned them into stone evos, and BDSP kept the old evolution because almost everything in that game is straight from the original DP And Sylveon to promote Pokémon Amie, that one virtual pet mode where you can feed and spoil your mons that has stayed in the mainline games in one way or another ever since, as well as the Happiness stat that gives plot armor-esque buffs, though since the Happiness stat is no longer optional, and now seemingly part of the Friendship stat, Sylveon also needed to reflect that change
@@robertlupa8273 I dunno, though the fact they changed Glaceon, Leafeon, and Sylveon's evolution methods to something more streamlined, and how they're very much remixing existing mons to fill the new region's pokedex, maybe in the future eeveelutions won't be bound to gimmicks like before, like tbh I'm super glad Leafeon and Glaceon are now stone evos, and I wouldn't mind the others also becoming stone evos tbh, Umbreon can easily come from a Moon Stone, Espeon from a Sun Stone, and Sylveon from a Shiny Stone
hot take but they should have made it weak to bug. i think of it as: pretty fairies getting grossed out by insects, kinda like psychics being afraid of/not understanding the dark. it wouldn't make bug too OP but it would give it a nice chance to shine, and fairy being weak to steel, poison and bug wouldn't be too much of a nerf (I think)
@@cremapastelera00 yeah i would also much prefer this. And i think it does make some amount of thematic sense. I feel like bug is both very similar to poison. And for some reason i can't explain it also feels similar to it's weakness to steel coming from the concept of silver bullets be effective against lots of mythical creatures. Bug just feels like the kinda thing a fairytale monster could be weak too.
I think it’s even more stupid they made ghost resist bug, like bugs literally eat dead corpses… the devs are just making weak types weaker and strong types stronger
my conspiracy theory is that terastallize was added so gamefreak can gather data on which types are too good, such that they can make changes to the type chart in generation 10 (or maybe even sooner, what with that 19th terastal type apparently coming in the next DLC)
While I feel like steel's resistance to Ghost and Dark being removed was probably a good thing overall, I grew up with Gen III, and Metagross always was one of my favorite gen III pokemon, and that change really felt hard on metagross, since steel used to negate all of psychic's weaknesses, and that change doubled its weaknesses
Yeah, the steel/psychic types (Metagross line, Bronzong line, Jirachi) definitely were hit the hardest by this. Ghost/Steel Types also would've been affected by this... but since the first one came in gen 6 and was the super overpowered Aegislash line, people didn't notice as much.
Steel resisting Ghost is silly, but Steel resisting Dark made perfect sense. Steel not being weak to either Water or Electric is silly, and Steel's primary weakness being GROUND but it somehow granting immunity to Sandstorm effects is almost an insult.
@@RoninCatholicI read that steel is weak to ground because earthquakes can take down big buildings lol, well that means steel should ONLY be weak to the move Earthquake… but all electric moves deal neutral damage??
Idk if anyone has mentioned yet but I’d like to mention innate properties pokemon have for being a certain type. Like fire types being immune to burn or ice types being immune to freeze. A cool change made from generation 2 to 3 is that steel types could no longer be poisoned by any move. In generation 2 steel types could actually be poisoned by bug moves that had a chance to poison. In generation 7 dark types got a small buff where they are now immune to prankster moves. Extra info: Gen 6 gave small buff to electrics types which became immune to paralysis by any means. Grass types also became immune to all powder and spore based moves. Grass types are also immune to leech seed. Poison types are immune to poison status effect.
It’s funny how dragons and ghosts had the opposite problems that could have been solved by having ghost be a special type and dragon be a physical type pre physical/special split
And Dark had a lot of problems from being a Special type when all its moves were obviously physical and most of its members being oriented towards physical attacks, because "Ghost is already Physical so we need a Special Attacking counter to the Psychic type". Dark also hits so similarly to Ghost offensively that it might as well have never existed, if Bug and Ghost just resisted Psychic.
Im a big fan of competitive battling and currently playing emerald on the side. In regard to the physical special split, knowing which moves to teach pokemon is hard for me based on their stats. The whole eevolution+dragon trick in this video makes that super easy to remember! Thank you!
fairy kind of took psychic's place aside from dominating poison. I think psychic should resist fairy since in most fairy tales the prerequisite to use magic is often intelligence. Then to keep poison relevant make them immune to fairy.
It could also play on being more grounded to reality, like Psychic Types resisting Fairies because they don't really believe in fiction that much, and they may even like the stuff, so they're very fine with it And the Fairy Type is usually sweet and soothing stuff, so maybe another reason Psychics could resist them, it's because stuff like desserts, pleasant aromas, and the moonlight can calm your mind and help you out, the opposite to its weaknesses, which are phobias
@@dustymcwari4468 your first argument would also play on one of Clarke's tree laws being "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" which essentially means that magic is just science for which people are not intelligent enough to understand. So Psychic (being the type associated with intelligence) resisting Fairy would make even more sense.
My one change to Fairy is make it resisted by Bug. It'd give Bug a bit more to do as a type, and small bugs could probably be well aware of fey trickery anyway.
Fun fact The types that ice is super effective against has to do more with cold than literal ice and the type ice is vulnerable to has to do more with literal ice than cold
& also the fact that ice has no other resistance but itself is a reference to what ordinary folks call room temperature because if ice cannot keep itself frozen in almost the entirety of the world & most times, why give it another resistance lol?
@@Blanktester685Snow + Aurora veil should be enough to make for the lack of resistances in order to prevent any literal meltdowns since ice is just frozen water at the end of the day.
Ice being super effective against Ground seems more about the fact that at the end of the day, ice is still water. I'm glad it is, though, because Ground types would be an absolute menace without an Ice weakness despite also already being weak to Water and Grass. One fewer weakness and they'd be a big dog like Gen 1 Normal and Psychic or literally-any-other-gen Dragon, Steel, Water, or Fairy.
Something that’s kinda funky is that Ghost has slowly and quietly been becoming more and more powerful every generation in the background and nobody really seems to notice. Gen 2 removed Psychic’s immunity so it could actually hit Psychic types super effectively; Gen 3 trapping became more important with Dugtrio and Wobbufett and Ghost’s immunity to trapping was very useful; Gen 4 gave the physical special split which was a MASSIVE boost for the ghost type because for SOME REASON Ghost was physical prior to this; Ghosts immunity to fighting was at its most important in Gen 5 because Fighting was on almost every competitive team because steel was because Dragon was; Gen 6 removed Steel’s resistance to Ghost and gave Dark a new weakness which nerfed both types-making Ghost even better; for the last 3 generations Fairy and Steel have only become stronger and stronger meaning that a Dark-the only type other than Ghost that can stand in its way-has gotten increasingly less usage. Ghost is now in a position where if they give steel and fairy the nerfs they need, it’s probably going to be one of the new dominant types, if not the BEST type. We went from the only ghost type being the Gengar line which was weak to the 2 most common Gen 1 attacks in Earthquake and Psychic making it unable to really be dominant over the normal type which is also very op in gen 1, to now there being a billion over powered ghosts and on top of that several Pokémon Tera Ghost for defense. There have only been 3 Pokémon in the history of the series that have been banned from Ubers, Mega Rayquaza, Zacian Crowned, and Calyrex Shadow Rider, not only is ghost in that bunch-it’s on the most recent one.
Ghost has always been a fascinating type to me. Excluding the weird Gen 1 mechanics, Ghost had always been really good offensively because of the lack of resistances, but it also doesn’t hit much for super effective, so it’s in this weird limbo. I think it’s deserved it’s buffs over time. I’ll also ALWAYS wish for more cool ghost Pokémon.
Ghost types have weak moves. Dragons didn't really get that strong until Gen 4. On paper they can become strong like Dragon types but their crappy moves are what hinders them. The strongest physical move is a legendary move if I remember correctly. Most Ghost type moves are special.
@@rudycrawford2458 do they really though? Shadow Ball is very common among the ghost type, and while 80 BP isn’t AMAZING, it also has a chance for a SpD. drop so it can snowball against an opponent. Hex is great if you already plan on statusing your opponent or you know a Guts or Poison Heal opponent will status themselves as it’ll be 130 BP. It also combos well with Will-o-Wisp, a move plenty of ghost types get and like to run due to being a bit frail on the physical side. Last Respects was so good Houndstone was banned from OU almost immediately after SV released because people would just run suicide teams with a Houndstone in the back and then sweep; granted the only two that even get this move are Houndstone and Basculegion, but still. Ominous Wind is bad, but it can finish off weaker opponents and the boosts are insane if you get them. Poltergeist is great in competitive since everything but acrobatics users run items and 110 BP is really good. I know it’s technically not an attack but Destiny Bond is a good tool whenever you’re in a spot. The problem with ghost attacks isn’t inherently that they’re weak, it’s just that a lot of the best ones are kinda exclusive or straight up signature moves. And it’s not like Dragon was running insane moves before Fairy came to town: Outrage and Draco Meteor had really bad downsides and Dragon Claw and Dragon Pulse didn’t even break 90 BP.
@@Pandacalifornia huh, neat. My bad, I thought the immunity was introduced in the same generation as trapping abilities were. Still Gen 3 was overall probably a net positive given the buffs to the fighting and steel types in this generation which hurt dark types.
Gigantamax and Terastalize are exactly what you called them - Gimmicks. Z Crystals was the last new mechanic that felt like a real feature to the series.
Changing the Bug-Poison super effectiveness really threw me for a loop. Like I thought I had false memories for a little bit. They really should’ve kept that in.
Poison should at least have remained Super Effective against Bug, because you use pesticides to kill bugs. The reason that Bug lost its Super Effective hits against Poison is that Poison doubled conceptually as the Dark type in Gen 1, being the main type of bad guys and sneaky ninjas. Bug was the underdog hero who is underestimated, so he triumphs over the bad guys. Bug's mutual weakness to Poison and mutual resistance to Fighting added up pretty well conceptually.
Changes in the type chart for every generation: Gen 1: Psychic- Immune to Ghost thanks to a glitch in the code. Bug type moves were pathetic. Can still lose to Physical moves due to poor Defense. Gen 2: Normal type gets nerfed here. Hyper Beam now needs a turn to recharge. Still, the type is convenient for Morty' s Ghost type gym. Gen 3: Fire and Water get a huge boost thanks to not only Sunny Day and Rain Dance, but with the moves Eruption and Water Spout. Ground also gets a mention due to getting Magnitude and Sandstorm. Ice also gets Hail but not very impressive. Gen 4: Dragon and Fighting get a boost. Dragon gets Draco Meteor, Spacial Rend, and Roar of Time. Fighting gets Aura Sphere, which bypasses evasion and accuracy checks. Gen 5: Poison gets a nerf with the only two fully evolved ones being Scolipede and Garbadore. Gen 6: Fairy gets a buff against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting. This ends the Dragon type's reign of supremacy. Gen 7: Not much changes here. Gen 8: Bug gets the boost it finally deserves thanks to Dynamaxing. Gen 9: Grass finally gets the boost it deserves
Something else worth noting is that sometimes types can just "drift" between generations without very much seeming to change. A really good example of this would be ghost, which has been on a slow upwards march from a fairly balanced type to one of the most busted types since all the way back in gen 2. The only notable buff that ghosts have specifically gotten in this time was the removal of pursuit, which while good hasn't broken the type alone. What actually has is that better ghost types have been released every gen and the type's kinda bonkers matchup spread has become more and more evident now that we're not reliant on just Gengar.
Wild part of the modern Dragon type is, it's still a pretty great type when you consider that the two best types in the game counter it. Though, it probably also has to do with stuff like Dragapult, Baxcalibur and Roaring Moon being... what they are.
In Gen 6 they also gave certain types immunities to status ailments, like Poison for Poison, Paralysis for Electric, Spore moves for Grass, and Frozen for Ice
I think more moves that have one type but hits one type for super effective when you use it I think could also be very good for the meta. Not putting down your idea but just another idea.
I hate cans of worms like that move, because now there's like 300 moves where you have to question "Why isn't _that_ a multi-type move too?" Similar annoyance on a different part with Freeze Dry. If a move can just outright have a different super effective interaction than its indicated type, how many more moves need to be re-evaluated?
Gen 1 Psychic type isn't actually the strongest type alone in that gen. Another type is on par with Psychic, and sometimes is even better, that's the Normal type, it has some of the best mons in the game: Snorlax, Tauros, and Chansey, also arguably the best moves of the gen: Hyper beam, which doesn't recharge if KO and Body Slam that paralyzes 30% and paralyze is pretty good in this gen. Also notable in this gen, Pokémon are immune to added effects of a move if they are the same type of the move, so Normal is immune to Body Slam paralysis. Yeah, Ghost is immune, but the only ghost is Gengar who is easily threatened by Earthquake, which most Normal mons can learn, and Gengar can't fight back with any SE moves, since Fighting is pretty terrible and the only usable moves are Submission which is weak, low acc and causes recoil and isn't learned by strong Gen 1 pokémon, and Hi-Jump Kick which is learned only by Hitmonlee which is pretty weak in Gen 1
@@ExaltableStill a good rooster and good moves of the type are important to how we perceive if a type is strong, Psychic and Normal wouldn't be as oppressive if there was a good amount of Bug and Fighting Pokémon in gen 1 or if there aren't any usable psychic and normal moves. Another good parallel is how Ice types were regarded as the worst type for many years, and today ice type Pokémon are banned all the time in Smogon OU when GF started to create good offensive Ice types (Darmanitan-G, Baxcalibur, Chien pao, Iron Bundle) along to more support added (Snow, Aurora Veil). Also, Bug is regarded as the worst type, but a pokémon loses a lot of its viability if it has a weakness to Bug because of U-turn alone
@@Exaltable How strong a type is, is based on the pokemon, dragon type for example evn before gen 6 was really bad offensivly only being super effective against itself, yet dragon types ruled the meta cause dragon type pokemon are just that strong
2:00 this change was absolutely not unfortunate, yes for poison it made them offensively basically useless (always thought poison should be good against normal and not fighting) but i would say the tradeoff of losing one type weak to you, but losing a weakness and gaining a resistance is worth it since like we see with ice and gen 1 normal, defensive traits are absolutely better
This will never happen but fuck it. Make Normal strong against Fairy because many stories have magic weaken or disappear when the common folk doesn't believe in it
The main thing i appreciate with this video is that it confirms that im not crazy when I get confused about type weaknesses and strengths. Been here since Day 1 of Gen 1 and now it's starting to get jumbled up 😂.
If a new type is added it should probably be something that ice types would be resistant to since it's kind of unfair that ice only resists itself, it might be a good idea to make it weak to bug & perhaps weak against bug since bug types need a buff, perhaps grass ought to resist it and it should probably be strong against fairy and ghost and resistant to those two. I can't think of what kind of type that would be, especially if you want to retcon other Pokemon into it.
You forgot to mention a lot of the aditional effects that typing give to a pokemon, like how fire types are immune to being burned or how grass types are immune to powder moves
Electrics being immune to Paralyze, Poison being immune to Poison and even absorbs Toxic Spikes, Flying immune to Spikes and Toxic Spikes, Rock getting a 50% Sp. Def boost in Sand with Ground and Steel being immune to said Sand, Dark being immune to Prankster, and Ice finally getting a 50% Def boost in Snow
I could see that. Seeing as a lot of dragon types are part flying or ground (ntm gen7/8's addition of dragon/grass types). So while dragon itself isn't double weak to ice many dragon types are.
The next thing I want to see game freak do is hidden/secret types for Pokémon where one of the Pokémon Type is switched to a different one that fits like flygon gaining the bug type to replace ground
Imo poison being strong against fairy is great. It gives poison as a type more of a valuable role, when types like fire and flying just simply did its job better beforehand. however, I dont think fairy should have been weak to steel - it seems kinda unfair, when the whole point of steel was to have massive defensive potential and less pressuring offensively i would have given ice supereffective damage against fairies. i do think fairies r a good addition tho. fairies sponging massive hits like close combat, draco meteor, knock off, etc is huge. They also resist u-turn which is great.
Now the biggest forces are Ghost and Fairy. Ghost have too little resistances and removing Pursuit was a mistake. Fairy have strong attacking monsters like Iron Valiant, Flutter Mane, Xerneas, and especially Zacean who can blast everything with not a lot of effort. We didn't believe in fairies and now we're the ones who're dropping dead.
I think immunities can unfairly impact certain types. Namely Psychic and Dragon. Both were used for good neutral coverage, but now they're almost not worth running at all, unless you have a very strong STAB + high stats. Personally I'd like if Dragon hit normal for super effective instead of fighting, and psychic had a strong move that hit dark for neutral or resisted damage
@@eddieakjr1562 I disagree. Psychic definitely falls short in both competitive and casual gameplay. Ice type is more popular than psychic typically. A psychic type is usually good because of a secondary typing, or in spite of it's typing (typically from good movepool). Dragon does have good pokemon, granted. But I'd really argue that the sparsity of dragon types to do super effective damage against in casual gameplay holds them back. Hitting another type for super effective could really diversify the feel of using them. Making them more similar to the ghost type for casual gameplay.
Dragon is not unfair though, in gen 5 Dragons would usually just boost and use the raw power of outrage to beat Steels. Otherwise they'd pair up with Zone to remove the steels and then go haywire. It was basically a stronger Ghost type in that both were able to hit most type neutrally, except Dragons didn't have anything immune to them and also far stronger Pokemon + Moves
Having an unbalanced type-chart isn't bad, as the Pokémon themselves, their abilities and their moves are more important. Yet, badly thought typing can be anti-synergistic, while some types are harder to counter. In order to balance, I think we should aim toward those two points: - Fix dual-types Pokémon that have 2 double-weaknesses - Add more counters to the offensively effective type, or good type *Mission #1:* Removes most double-type with 2 double-weaknesses. Here are Bug/Grass, Bug/Ice, Fire/Rock, Ghost/Psychic, Ground/Rock, Ice/Rock, Ice/Steel and Rock/Steel. The fix that would requires the lesser amount changes would be: - Bug isn't weak to Fire (→ Bug/Grass and Bug/Ice). Allows to make Bug and Grass more distinct. - Ice isn't weak to Fighting (→ Ice/Rock and Ice/Steel) - Rock isn't weak to Ground (→ Fire/Rock and Rock/Steel) - To discuss: Rock isn’t weak to Water (controversial, → Fire/Rock and Ground/Rock). This means Rock would have two removed weaknesses, being weak to only Fighting, Grass and Steel-type moves. It would also remove the gimmick of Sudowoodo, but can be circumvented with a signature ability: *Strange Bark:* _”Halves the damage taken from moves that do not make direct contact, but doubles that of Water-type moves.”_ - Do nothing for Psychic/Ghost (controversial). Ghost and Dark are similar offensively, but opposite defensively. Fixing it would remove the gimmick. *Mission #2:* Add more counters. The types that do not have enough “hard-counter” are Ground, Steel and eventually Water if it is effective on Rock-type Pokémon. Fighting, Grass and Dark-type Pokémon have too many counters. - Ice now resists Ground (it would mean Aurorus would *resist* Ground-type moves, if Rock isn't weak to Ground). - Steel is resisted by Fighting-type and are weak to Electric-type moves (Fighting is now a hard-counter instead of soft-counter, while Corviknight and Empoleon would have an electric double-weakness). - Fairy isn't effective on Dark, and has no Fighting resistance (Spiritomb has no weaknesses, while Crowned-Zacian is weak to Fighting). - Grass isn't weak to Flying, and isn't resisted by Poison (Grass starters would better deals with Fying-type, while Toxapex, Gimmora and Clodsire would be weak to Grass). With those 11 changes (big changes), many dual-types would be rehabilitated (like Leavanny, Frosmoth, Magcargo, Rhyperior, Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Probopass...), make Ground and Steel less dominant, while giving Fighting, Dark and mostly: Grass-type Pokémon another usage.
that been said, some of your suggestions will only make the game even dominate then before. for example, Spiritomb no longer weak to fairy is dumb move; type combos that remove 2 double weaknesses no longer benefit some pokemons like aggron. I might consider buff those weaker types properly instead.
Ice being neutral to fire was most likely some coding bug, but if we look for justification, then there’s not need for “mental gymnastics”. In reality, fires effectiveness against ice (and vice versa for that matter) is determined by the size and density of the ice and the intensity of the fire. Since Ice is just water but with low energy, and fire is literally just energy, it all comes down to if there is more energy than there is ice to absorb it. If you start a fire on a glacier then ice will extinguish the fire. But if you set fire to an ice cube it’ll melt.
I am of the opinion that fire should not resist ice Fire should hit ice super effective, but if you cover fire with ice or send an intense chill it's way, it'll either severely weaken or dissipate. Thus, I think it's fair to be neutral. As a side note, I think it would've been nice to mention that steel helped balance out normal types after gen 1. A lot of people don't realize that normal types were equally as busted, if not more busted than psychic types in gen 1, due to movepools, lack of good ghost types, all rock types having bad weaknesses to types most normals can learn, and fighting types being completely unusable in gen 1.
Personally I'm more of the advise that steel shouldn't resist ice. Being able to produce heat is a good thing to resist the cold. On the other hand, a heat conductor like steel should absolutely not resist ice, steel is one of the material that freezes the fastest. But even then, I think offenses is really not the problem with ice type. Two of the best offensive combos in ice and ground and elektrik and ice use ice type in it. What really kill ice type is the resistances. Ice should at least be resisting water and flying (and realistically grass and bug too but that would not be very balanced would it). Currently ice types are completely unable to come on the field safely due to their many common weaknesses and lack of resistances. This would hopefully change it
@@artimist0315 steel has quite a few strange interactions. Fire is super effective on steel, and I don't really have an issue with that, but steel doesn't melt until around 2500 degrees F. Meanwhile, water boils at 212 degrees F, so logically water isn't really resisting fire. While water does change temperature at a far slower rate than steel, many fire pokemon just straight up have dex entries about how their fire immediately evaporates water, or just showcasing absurd temperatures that would do that in general. Steel resisting psychic makes sense from a mental perspective, but from a physical perspective one of the most notorious things for a "psychic" to do is bend metal. Definitely the weirdest interaction is steel being weak to fighting. I wouldn't change it, due to balance, but what about fighting moves or martial arts in general has ever been associated with breaking metal? Braking all kinds of rocks is common, but breaking metal is reserved entirely for high power fiction. This is even weirder in japan, where fighting type is supposed to be some type of "justice", which is why it hits dark type super effective (evil type in japan). I guess the weakness to ground is also weird, but it's hard to reason why ground would hit anything but fire and electric super effective. If anything, I'd say if a bird got mud on it, it wouldn't be able to fly due to the weight, but obviously pokemon went with the concept of "they're too high up in the air to be hit by a ground move". The last one I want to speak of is electric. Neutral on steel, which is fine by me - but it hits water super effective. This is strange to me, as the only reason water conducts electricity is because of the minerals in it - completely pure water doesn't conduct electricity at all, and is basically unnaffected by it. There's also the factor of "this creature is made of water, not in water" that may occasionally occur - no matter how conductive the water, what the electricity is damaging is more what's inside the water, rather than the water itself. Thus, if pokemon wants to argue that water conducting electricity is cause for its weakness, steel should be no different.
@@isuckatgaming1873 I think the fire type interactions have more to do with oxygen availability than melting point. Rock, Ground and water are the 3 most common ways to kill a fire by depriving it of comburant, aka oxygen. You wouldn't really be able to do that with any of the steel type attacks. And the resistances probably has to do with the fact that wet items, like wet wood are more difficult to burn. Of course the logic for steel type is a bit different but it still holds up. The rest of the interactions I completely agree makes little to no sense, and they could perfectly be changed. I also think that the interaction change they made in gen 6 where steel no longer resists dark makes no sens, dark type attacks do not look like they could damage steel and thematically steel has always been associated with nobility of heart, light (special attacks) and knights, something you think would be strong against evil
Love the vid. We wont get a new type though. Between gens 6 and 8 we got less than 100 per gen. Gen 6 had 2 poisons and gen 7 had a singular ice type. A 19th type would make things hard. Gen 9 only gave us 116. The most we ever got was Gen 5 at 156. Sound is also kind of a hard thing to create for. A lot of Pokémon that would be candidates for sound types already exist like the Whismur line, Chatot and Maracus. You could do what they did before and change ghe types, but then after that i might repetitive. With the other types you can keep making things pretty easy.
Yeah I definitely agree. They can’t be expected to always add more types, and limiting it to the 18 we have seems best. Even with Fairy being OP at times, another new type would probably make things worse.
Sound is one of the worst concepts for "I want a new type" both because conceptually it's just Normal or Flying and because mechanically, Sound's logical interactions would only make Water and Steel even better while making Rock even worse.
@@RoninCatholicYup. Sound is something literally every creature produces. The sound mechanic exists because some creature can utilise sound as a weapon. So Sound should just remain a submechanic of Normal and Flying types
I think it would be worth going into more detail about weather conditions and how they effect each type like how certain types are immune to sandstorm dot
Actually if i remember correctly Hydreigon stayed about the same strength after Fairy type, because it could now actually hit steal which previously resisted both it's types.
Separating typing from whether an attack is physical or special is the best typing related change the series introduced. No one change has done as much to make more Pokemon viable
Weaknesses are multiplicative, 3x super effective = 8x damage. Octo weakness. Base damage, double damage, quadruple damage, octuple damage. Some Abilities combined with some Types already give octuple resistances. If a double weakness were "merely" 300% damage taken, then a triple weakness would be like our current double weakness at 400%.
i'll admit im biased but i still think fairy was a completely unnecessary type and the whole dragon domination could've been solved with steel being super effective against dragon (like knights slaying dragons) and ice type moves/pokemon existing before the very end of the game cause of what ice pokemon there are a lot of them are,, mediocre at best, plus the whole theming of the fairy type (mystical and/or mysterious) was already covered by the psychic type and on top of that as a gen 4 -> gen 7(? alola)/legends arceus player it was -*-hell-*- trying to remember how fairies worked outside of its onesided match up against dragons (can't tell you how many times i tossed my togetic at a zubat in arceus only for it to get floored cause i thought the interaction was the other way around, and as for steel it was always a defensive type and it felt like they were just scrambling for anything to make it logically weak to) and even then if you insist on fairies being not unnecessary it being -*-completely-*- immune to dragons is insane. especially when they tacked on the typing to several already very good pokemon and quite a few of the early route pokemon as well- i feel like it would have been better if it was merely a resistance or even a gen 1 poison/bug situation
Another important aspect are the passive abilities given to certain types for free: Ice - Immune to Freeze............which nobody likes Ground and Steel - immune to Sand (and in the latter's case Poison obviously) Flying - Immune to Spikes and Toxic Spikes Ghost - Immune to trapping Rock - 50% Sp. Def boost in Sand Poison - Immune to Poison and absorbs Toxic Spikes Grass, Fire, Electric - Immune to Powder moves (most notably Sleep Powder and Spore), Burn, and Paralyze respectively Dark - Immune to Prankster moves Ice (again) - Finally a 50% Def boost in Snow (replacement for Hail) which was long overdue prior to S/V Every other type (Water, Normal, Bug, Psychic, Fighting, Dragon, Fairy) don't have any passive ability
If you understand the Lore behind the Fay, which is what the Fairies type is base on. Fay beings are weak to iron, since its man made. So that's why it's weak to steel, since steel is just iron but process. Fay draw power from nature, planets and flowers. What do Bug eat, planets and flowers
The sheer broken psychic type in gen 1 account for at least 70% the reason why there will never exist a pokemon as unfair as gen 1 mewtwo. The other percentage would be the other mechanic that is very unfair for gen 1 like special stat, the crit rate, the movepool option, ect. I havent fighted ultra nezcrozma but i given the existence of dark and fairy type, i dont think it can be as hard as mewtwo
Tera be like: “Aw sweet, I’ve got my Gardevoir on the field so I can one shot this Salamence.” A few moments later.. “Oh wait, never mind, it’s a steel type! I guess I lose”
How is it weird that fire didn't resit ice, heck, I think they should both be mutuals, like bug and poison were, cold hurts fire, freeze a charmanders tail or magcargos whole body and they are done. At least in my opinion
Fairy is probably the most broken typing in the game, weak to defensive typings, a shit ton of resitances, super effective against a lot of strong types, and an immunity to dragon cause why nog, its like water in the fact that its so good it is fine by itself and even more op together with another strong typing, steel/fairy being the nastiest of examples.
Fairy was given a lot of type matchups that were completely unnecessary conceptually (Bug, Fire) or completely unjustified mechanically (Dark and Fighting weren't exactly dominating). Steel as their main weakness makes sense for tradition reasons, and being immune to Dragon was the main point of the type being thought up; if Dragon wasn't overtuned in previous gens, Fairy wouldn't have been made. Water continues to be basically exactly as it was in Gen 1 and remains a contender for best type.
I was expecting you to talk about status immunities: in gen 1 and 2 moves cannot inflict a status if the target is their same type: sludge cannot poison a poison pokemon, ember cannot burn a fire pokemon and body slam cannot paralyze a normal pokemon. Fun fact: in gen 2 you can poison a poison type pokemon using twineedle and, using tri attack you can bot freeze an ice pokemon and burn a fire one (just in gen 2, in gen 1 tri attack had no additional effects). The spceial split (special attack-special defense) between gen 1 and 2 should be alco noticed. Oh, and aòsp the electic immunity to paralysis, the grass immunity to powder moves, the ghost immunity to trapping and the dark immunity to priority status moves were introduced at some point...
Why is Ice type both the weakest defensively and one of the best offensively? Room Temperature. Many types Ice is effective against cannot resist those types because they aren't in freezing weather many ice types build thier homes in the snow Thier bodies are basically melting everywhere else.
Or they could've just modeled the ice type after the "glass cannon" archetype. Seeing as ice is likely the type most associated with shattering from a strong hit.
@@fmwyt95This may be late & I hate to say this but the way the real world operates is pretty much why ice is the way that it is. Since if the real world was a wintery place all the time then human civilization would cease to exist. No civilization no video games.
3:00 Hey I didn't know this! I don't foresee Gamefreak adding a new Type after this point, and I think they're scared to touch the Type Chart after the Dragon-Steel-Fairy problem they created. But I feel like Types like Ice and especially Bug still need some help 😭 gamefreak, i beg, explain why you made fairy resist bug
@@Bruce_P-Z I don't necessarily think they should be weak to it but bug should definitely be neutral on it and resist it. Imo bug should resist psychic, ghost and fairy as a common theme of killing magical creatures. I have always found very cool and funny that the very weak bug type could be super effective against the very cool psychic and dark types and I think going further in this direction would be very suitable. If we really needed an explaination, I think the spider web shaped dream catcher would be one.
Yes I think currently, normal, rock, ice, bug, psychic and grass particularly stand out as underage types. While I like the idea of Bug type as the "underdog" type and I don't think rock and normal should be among the best types in the game, ice, grass and psychic should definitely be stronger than that. Personally I think that grass should no longer be resisted by bug and maybe poison as well. It never made sense how a Pokémon like carnivine, a literal fly-trap was doubly not very effective against pokemon like Dustox or Ninjask. Overall while bug should still be super effective against grass types, it should definitely not resist it.
@brucepotter8817 What does that actually change though? Like, Volcarona, Scisor, Phermosa, would all love that But, are you really gonna try to use Vivillion, Butterfree, Venomoth, to check a Fairy, or get a reliable Steel type
@@LNRspeaks U turn ? Yes it won't make any bad bug type suddenly busted, but this interaction change shouldn't be taken in isolation. If bug gets some additional buffs and steel gets well-deserved nerfs (like an elektrik weakness, no longer resisting psychic, normal and ice, ...) it could suddenly make the type more worth using in some situations.
people never believe me when i say bug was super effective against poison in gen 1, whenever i play i always pick squirtle and run a beedrill for x4 match up against rivals bulbasaur. almost all grass types in gen 1 are quad weak to bug
Psychic remains a type I’m wary of and always want on my team just because of the power it held. Using psychic with a psychic type just always felt like it shreds through opponents. Espeon, Gardevoir, Reuniclus, Alakazam if I can get one - they just delete pokemon with psychic alone
Honestly, if they just added a few good and widespread Bug and Ghost moves and made Bug and Ghost resist Psychic, the Dark type would never have been needed or warranted. Fairy types giving Fire another needless resistance and making Bug and Dark both worse doesn't make sense - if anything, it should have given Grass another super effective hit or Ice a new resistance. Steel was massively overtuned from the start, and it's good it finally lost some of its resistances in Gen 6, but Steel granting immunity to Sandstorm is bizarre and counter-intuitive, as is its not being weak to one of Water or Electric. Gen 1, the best types are Psychic, Normal (for the reasons you listed on Psychic...no weaknesses as the moves of its counters are rare and bad, the one thing that resists it generally being pretty weak), and Water. Grass was at its best in Gen 1. Gen 2-5, the best types were Water, Dragon, and Steel in roughly that order. Fire, Fighting, and Bug all gradually got less bad with time and Ice became more and more useless as a primary type but better and better as attack coverage. Gen 6 onward the best types have always been Water, Fairy, Dragon, and Steel in a slightly shuffling order.
An equal quantity of ice and water would at best have the same effect on a fire, but more realistically the ice would be more effective due to the larger temperature gradient. It's just thermodynamics. And in kind, why can fire beat ice while the much warmer water is resistant to it? Shouldn't boiling a Pokemon's internal water be just as much of a "win" as an ice type being melted? I think the ice type would be much better off if treated like a sister type to water, at least as far as the logic being that they're both "water" and so changing phases doesn't effect them. That or changing "ice" type to "cold" type, which sounds stupid but would make this much easier to make sense of.
Ice's super effective hits: Mostly based around the fact that it's cold (plus effective on Ground because it's water) Ice's resistances and weaknesses: Based around it being solid, brittle ice (weak to Rock and Fighting in particlar)
I still think we can do with some small changes to the type chart. Everyone always talks about buffing Ice or Bug types, but I think it's time to buff Psychic. I'd start by making Dark no longer immune to Psychic attacks, but still resisting it. That way we could have a proper rock - papers - scissor interaction between Psychic, Dark and Fighting, a la Grass - Fire - Water. Aside from that, I couldn't really justify any other change to the chart itself, but I think that the type could do with a "Grass is immune to spore moves" buff. Maybe something like making it immune to flinch, making them setup pokemon that cannot be stopped by Fake Out. Or maybe being able to partially hit through Protect moves, like how Dynamaxed moves could hit though non-Max Guard protect moves, albeit at a reduced damage.
2:08 Tbh, I think this does have some sound logic. The only problem is that Water is Super Effective against Fire. So why would ice deal neutral damage when logically it would deal Super Effective damage? In my preferred way of thinking, we at least make Ice type moves like Blizzard and Ice Beam Super Effective against Fire and Water. It fooled me many times that Blizzard wouldn’t do much damage to Water Types. And it always made no sense that it wasn’t Super Effective. At least Water Type is a good type. So who cares that you can’t use Ember on Magikarp. But for a bad type, I think it should get some updates.
Fair point 😂 I think that it always gets overshadowed by Psychic. Normal was really good, but more bc of moves like Hyper Beam and Body Slam as opposed to the type itself. I did disrespect Gen 1 Tauros, Chansey, and Snorlax by omitting them 😭
Worth noting normal is busted in gen 1 too. Fighting moves sucked, steel doesn’t exist to resist it, and both Body Slam and Hyper Beam were crazy good, especially compared to how bad physical attacks were for other types besides ground. Gengar did exist as an immunity but got slammed by earthquake.
People always talk about Psychic when mentioning Steel being created, but stopping Normal was most likely another factor.
@@marcstutsman4861and most of that clout is purely because of Persian and tauros. Other normal types just…just sucked.
@Kali_Krause don't forget Pre Gen 5 explosion! Essentially a 1 for 1 button as not much can tank one.
Also Ghost is immune to trapping.
Dark types gaining immunity to Prankster was a Gen 7 change
Fire-types can be only burned by Tri Attack in Gen 2.
If grass is immune to powder moves, why isnt it immune to powder snow?
Snowscape is the move; the weather condition is called Snow.
Fun fact, The ghost type was originally meant to be super effective on psychics even in gen 1, but werent cause of a bug. Cause Gen 1 is held together with spit and tape
Gen 6 also gave a bunch of types immunities to certain status conditions, abilities, or move types. Grass gaining powder immunity is an awesome buff
The bug-poison matchup in g1 should’ve been kept in my opinion. That, plus bug should’ve been strong against fairy.
Why should Bug be super effective against Fairy?
Horrifying.
"but U-Turn spam"
but seriously, have you seen U-Turn's distribution? it's insane
The funny thing is that since Sylveon was created to promote Fairy type you can say that the last time they designed eeveelutions was not 10 years ago but 17 years ago, so it's entirely possible to have a person who wants a new type just to have a new eeveelution
Give us a Dragon Eeveelution already, dammit!
@@robertlupa8273 It's dead bro, leave it in the past and continue with your life
I think they introduce Eeveelutions more based on a brand new gimmick they wanna promote than a type, otherwise we would've gotten a Steel one instead of a Psychic one, and the Grass and Ice ones wouldn't exist because those aren't new types, and Gamefreak doesn't seem to really wanna have an eeveelution for all types:
Espeon and Umbreon may've been created to promote the Day and Night cycles as well as the Friendship stat introduced in Johto
Leafeon and Glaceon to promote the more unconventual evolution methods (that were often locked to the post game x,d) introduced in Sinnoh, and these two may be the reason why we didn't get more Eeveelutions like that, because from Gen 8 onwards they just turned them into stone evos, and BDSP kept the old evolution because almost everything in that game is straight from the original DP
And Sylveon to promote Pokémon Amie, that one virtual pet mode where you can feed and spoil your mons that has stayed in the mainline games in one way or another ever since, as well as the Happiness stat that gives plot armor-esque buffs, though since the Happiness stat is no longer optional, and now seemingly part of the Friendship stat, Sylveon also needed to reflect that change
@@dustymcwari4468 I wonder what they could add that could justify a new Eeveelution? 🤔
There’s no reason why they made fairy resist bug types. Bug types are already struggling as it is.
hot take but they should have made it weak to bug. i think of it as: pretty fairies getting grossed out by insects, kinda like psychics being afraid of/not understanding the dark. it wouldn't make bug too OP but it would give it a nice chance to shine, and fairy being weak to steel, poison and bug wouldn't be too much of a nerf (I think)
@@cremapastelera00 thats a very cold take, not a hot take
I think it’s even more stupid they made ghost resist bug, like bugs literally eat dead corpses… the devs are just making weak types weaker and strong types stronger
(7:01) The opposite is also true. The elemental punches used to be a good moves to slap on Alakazam, but now they are mostly useless.
my conspiracy theory is that terastallize was added so gamefreak can gather data on which types are too good, such that they can make changes to the type chart in generation 10 (or maybe even sooner, what with that 19th terastal type apparently coming in the next DLC)
update from the future: yeah that new Tera-Type is meaningless (it literally just gives Tera Stab to everything)
It's kind of like how Ghost/Dark used to have no weaknesses before Fairy was a thing.
Sandstorm is a rock move@@RoninCatholic
@@RoninCatholicI read that steel is weak to ground because earthquakes can take down big buildings lol, well that means steel should ONLY be weak to the move Earthquake… but all electric moves deal neutral damage??
i’m gonna binge all your videos now, so glad i found your channel today
I love that Sylveon is pretty much the mascot for fairy types. Xerneas never stood a chance
I love the amount of thoughtfulness that goes into your videos. So crisp, eloquent, and informative. Keep up the great content!
It’s funny how dragons and ghosts had the opposite problems that could have been solved by having ghost be a special type and dragon be a physical type pre physical/special split
Seriously though who was the person that went, “Ghost? Yeah that’s physical for sure”
It could also play on being more grounded to reality, like Psychic Types resisting Fairies because they don't really believe in fiction that much, and they may even like the stuff, so they're very fine with it
And the Fairy Type is usually sweet and soothing stuff, so maybe another reason Psychics could resist them, it's because stuff like desserts, pleasant aromas, and the moonlight can calm your mind and help you out, the opposite to its weaknesses, which are phobias
Fun fact
The types that ice is super effective against has to do more with cold than literal ice and the type ice is vulnerable to has to do more with literal ice than cold
& also the fact that ice has no other resistance but itself is a reference to what ordinary folks call room temperature because if ice cannot keep itself frozen in almost the entirety of the world & most times, why give it another resistance lol?
For game balance...
@@Blanktester685Snow + Aurora veil should be enough to make for the lack of resistances in order to prevent any literal meltdowns since ice is just frozen water at the end of the day.
@@Blanktester685 if you don't believe me just remember that all the types that resist ice are all the types that water resists. Need I say more
Ice being super effective against Ground seems more about the fact that at the end of the day, ice is still water.
Ghost’s trapping immunity was added in Gen 6.

No, Z-Moves were also a gimmick, exactly the same type of gimmick as Gigantamax. All flash, no substance.
Fairy is also the last nail in ice's coffin, because before X and Y, Ice was the safest against dragon
Not even close, most Dragon types had tools to dispatch Ice. You may have an easy OHKO but taking a neutral STAB Outrage was never good.
Changes in the type chart for every generation:
Gen 1: Psychic- Immune to Ghost thanks to a glitch in the code.
Excellent break down thank you.
Wild part of the modern Dragon type is, it's still a pretty great type when you consider that the two best types in the game counter it.
Though, it probably also has to do with stuff like Dragapult, Baxcalibur and Roaring Moon being... what they are.
Steel picking fights with everyone made me laugh irl.
In Gen 6 they also gave certain types immunities to status ailments, like Poison for Poison, Paralysis for Electric, Spore moves for Grass, and Frozen for Ice
Let bug be supereffective against fairy!!!
How does thay make sense?
Let Bug be offensively neutral on Fairy, but resist Fairy and Psychic.

Nicely done! Only thing you missed was paras/parasect being the only pokemon ever to have THREE quad weaknesses cause gen 1 lol

I think more moves that have one type but hits one type for super effective when you use it I think could also be very good for the meta. Not putting down your idea but just another idea.
@@inteleonarmy1838 Agreed. More moves like Freeze-Dry would be really cool as well.
I hate cans of worms like that move, because now there's like 300 moves where you have to question "Why isn't _that_ a multi-type move too?"
Similar annoyance on a different part with Freeze Dry.
Having the strongest Pokémon and being the strongest type are two different things.
Make Normal strong against Fairy because many stories have magic weaken or disappear when the common folk doesn't believe in it
Now this is something I can get behind!
Damn that's smart
Or be immune to it but that would be too op
4:36 FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE REALIZES
You forgot to mention a lot of the aditional effects that typing give to a pokemon, like how fire types are immune to being burned or how grass types are immune to powder moves
Imo grass should still be affected by poison powder at the very least.
I miss the time when dragons were overpowered elites...
I always could have sworn that dragon was 4x weak to ice?
I could see that. Seeing as a lot of dragon types are part flying or ground (ntm gen7/8's addition of dragon/grass types). So while dragon itself isn't double weak to ice many dragon types are.
The next thing I want to see game freak do is hidden/secret types for Pokémon where one of the Pokémon Type is switched to a different one that fits like flygon gaining the bug type to replace ground
That’s what regional forms and terrastalize is for
gives pokemon a third typing, charizard still not allowed to get its dragon type :p
ayy one crunch from my lvl 83 Dark Hydra (thats the name of my Hydreigon) and that stupid cupcake monster is gone
Imo poison being strong against fairy is great. It gives poison as a type more of a valuable role, when types like fire and flying just simply did its job better beforehand.
however, I dont think fairy should have been weak to steel - it seems kinda unfair, when the whole point of steel was to have massive defensive potential and less pressuring offensively
i would have given ice supereffective damage against fairies.
i do think fairies r a good addition tho. fairies sponging massive hits like close combat, draco meteor, knock off, etc is huge. They also resist u-turn which is great.
Im glad VGC has open teamsheet because if it didn't Terrastelization would be a huge surprise
Removing steels resist to ghost was a mistake
Videos about typings.
Automatic win!
I think immunities can unfairly impact certain types. Namely Psychic and Dragon.
Both were used for good neutral coverage, but now they're almost not worth running at all, unless you have a very strong STAB + high stats.
Personally I'd like if Dragon hit normal for super effective instead of fighting, and psychic had a strong move that hit dark for neutral or resisted damage
i feel like dragon and pyschic are in a good spot right now plus both types have strong mons to take advantage of.
In order to balance, I think we should aim toward those two points:
- Fix dual-types Pokémon that have 2 double-weaknesses
- Add more counters to the offensively effective type, or good type
*Mission #1:* Removes most double-type with 2 double-weaknesses. Here are Bug/Grass, Bug/Ice, Fire/Rock, Ghost/Psychic, Ground/Rock, Ice/Rock, Ice/Steel and Rock/Steel. The fix that would requires the lesser amount changes would be:
- Bug isn't weak to Fire (→ Bug/Grass and Bug/Ice). Allows to make Bug and Grass more distinct.
- Ice isn't weak to Fighting (→ Ice/Rock and Ice/Steel)
- Rock isn't weak to Ground (→ Fire/Rock and Rock/Steel)
- To discuss: Rock isn’t weak to Water (controversial, → Fire/Rock and Ground/Rock). This means Rock would have two removed weaknesses, being weak to only Fighting, Grass and Steel-type moves. It would also remove the gimmick of Sudowoodo, but can be circumvented with a signature ability: *Strange Bark:* _”Halves the damage taken from moves that do not make direct contact, but doubles that of Water-type moves.”_
- Do nothing for Psychic/Ghost (controversial).
With those 11 changes (big changes), many dual-types would be rehabilitated (like Leavanny, Frosmoth, Magcargo, Rhyperior, Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Probopass...), make Ground and Steel less dominant, while giving Fighting, Dark and mostly: Grass-type Pokémon another usage.
good changes!
that been said, some of your suggestions will only make the game even dominate then before. for example, Spiritomb no longer weak to fairy is dumb move; type combos that remove 2 double weaknesses no longer benefit some pokemons like aggron.
Fire, ice, and water can all be argued as mutual resists depending on the volume you imagine you're working with between them LOL.
I think for gen 10 theyll make a more defensive approach for a gimmick
I am of the opinion that fire should not resist ice
Fire should hit ice super effective, but if you cover fire with ice or send an intense chill it's way, it'll either severely weaken or dissipate.
They literally haven't always though, what does dark type attacks look like you you?
5:29 Poison is neutral against Bug.
The gen 6 type chart has now lasted as many generations as the gen II type chart.
Actually if i remember correctly Hydreigon stayed about the same strength after Fairy type, because it could now actually hit steal which previously resisted both it's types.
I was getting sleepy in the video cause it's 3:00 am when I am watching this video. Then he said "here's a picture Of my dog" and I woke up instantly
Separating typing from whether an attack is physical or special is the best typing related change the series introduced.
No one change has done as much to make more Pokemon viable
Tri type?
So a hexa weakness is on the horizon then.
Nope I'll throw in the towel after 25+ years if they start having all pokemon with 3 typings instead of the max 2
I swear I remember steel being super effective to dragon at one point but it’s never been
Another important aspect are the passive abilities given to certain types for free:
Ice - Immune to Freeze............which nobody likes
Ground and Steel - immune to Sand (and in the latter's case Poison obviously)
Flying - Immune to Spikes and Toxic Spikes
Ghost - Immune to trapping
Rock - 50% Sp. Def boost in Sand
Poison - Immune to Poison and absorbs Toxic Spikes
Grass, Fire, Electric - Immune to Powder moves (most notably Sleep Powder and Spore), Burn, and Paralyze respectively
Dark - Immune to Prankster moves
Ice (again) - Finally a 50% Def boost in Snow (replacement for Hail) which was long overdue prior to S/V
Every other type (Water, Normal, Bug, Psychic, Fighting, Dragon, Fairy) don't have any passive ability
Gen 5 gave something new hidden abilities
0:25 why did sylveon do that? Is it acoustic?
8:34 I do wonder why they chose to make Fairy strong against Bug and weak to Steel, since they are already pretty unbalanced.
If you understand the Lore behind the Fay, which is what the Fairies type is base on. Fay beings are weak to iron, since its man made. So that's why it's weak to steel, since steel is just iron but process.
Fay draw power from nature, planets and flowers. What do Bug eat, planets and flowers
@@joshuafranklin1399 It would be interesting if with this logic, Ice was also strong against Fairy.
@@amesstarline5482 This is where DnD would come into play, as DnD have the Fay being divided into four Courts, each one being base on a season.
@@joshuafranklin1399 By that logic Bug should be strong against Fairy too
Make Fairy a true anti Dragon type by making it weak to Water, Fire, Grass and Electric because fairies can be easily affected by changes in nature
There’s a mistake at 5:34 for Poison on Bug, starting from Gen 2 it became neutral, not not very effective.
Other than that, good work 👍🏼
The sheer broken psychic type in gen 1 account for at least 70% the reason why there will never exist a pokemon as unfair as gen 1 mewtwo.
The other percentage would be the other mechanic that is very unfair for gen 1 like special stat, the crit rate, the movepool option, ect.
I havent fighted ultra nezcrozma but i given the existence of dark and fairy type, i dont think it can be as hard as mewtwo
Ultra Necrozma is the closest we’ve gotten to the Gen 1 Mewtwo level of overpowered, but it’s still nowhere near the same 😭
I think that change wir Dark deals 1x dmg to steel already came up in gen 4 in the Platinum version if i remember correctly...
Tera be like:
“Aw sweet, I’ve got my Gardevoir on the field so I can one shot this Salamence.”
A few moments later..
I wish fairy resisted dragon rather then being immune to dragon
Ive liked commented and subscribed. Where are my Dog photos?
Why is Ice type both the weakest defensively and one of the best offensively?
Room Temperature.
Many types Ice is effective against cannot resist those types because they aren't in freezing weather
many ice types build thier homes in the snow
Thier bodies are basically melting everywhere else.
0:57 never knew they spelled PSYCHC on the type emblem instead of Psychic
Yeah Psychic is still the most NERFED type by far
3:00 Hey I didn't know this!
I don't foresee Gamefreak adding a new Type after this point, and I think they're scared to touch the Type Chart after the Dragon-Steel-Fairy problem they created. But I feel like Types like Ice and especially Bug still need some help 😭 gamefreak, i beg, explain why you made fairy resist bug
Fairy should be weak to bug
Like, Volcarona, Scisor, Phermosa, would all love that
But, are you really gonna try to use Vivillion, Butterfree, Venomoth, to check a Fairy, or get a reliable Steel type
@@LNRspeaks U turn ?
Yes it won't make any bad bug type suddenly busted, but this interaction change shouldn't be taken in isolation. If bug gets some additional buffs and steel gets well-deserved nerfs (like an elektrik weakness, no longer resisting psychic, normal and ice, ...) it could suddenly make the type more worth using in some situations.
people never believe me when i say bug was super effective against poison in gen 1, whenever i play i always pick squirtle and run a beedrill for x4 match up against rivals bulbasaur. almost all grass types in gen 1 are quad weak to bug
moves that are two types or moves that are effected by the pokemons types
did hidden abilities in gen 5 mess with anything's type matchups, or would type resistant/immune hidden abilities usually be suboptimal anyways?
They wanna nerf fairy just make dark super effective against land make dark resist fairy
Psychic remains a type I’m wary of and always want on my team just because of the power it held. Using psychic with a psychic type just always felt like it shreds through opponents.
Espeon, Gardevoir, Reuniclus, Alakazam if I can get one - they just delete pokemon with psychic alone
00:39 click here to start the video
Ice's super effective hits: Mostly based around the fact that it's cold (plus effective on Ground because it's water)
Ice's resistances and weaknesses: Based around it being solid, brittle ice (weak to Rock and Fighting in particlar)
Just make Psychic types immune to confusion. Ignoring Protect is too OP
what if a Pokemon that has every type but one weakness
at 4:02 what anime is that, the chick blocking the dude.

Tbh, I think this does have some sound logic.
Now what i think will happen in gen 10 if ANYTHING changes, then it's bug being nerfed when it needs a buff :D
Bug and ice should’ve resisted psychic and dragon respectively, would’ve done more to not require a whole new type to block them
Why did I think psychic was weak to psychic in Gen 1?
Probably because it was the main counter to Psychics since nothing else was 😂
So you’re not going to talk about how broken normal was in gen 1? Argueably more than psychic?? Watch some Big Yellow
Fair point 😂 I think that it always gets overshadowed by Psychic. Normal was really good, but more bc of moves like Hyper Beam and Body Slam as opposed to the type itself. I did disrespect Gen 1 Tauros, Chansey, and Snorlax by omitting them 😭
Moreso the 3 ou pokemon that were normal were really good not necessarily the type itself
Poison should be super effective against fighting. Ice should be resistant to plant and water (except scald and solar beam).
