Flute Sisters Suchismita and Debopriya are unique because they are quietly following an unconventional path by choosing to play the instrument of flute over the more typical classical vocal and dance. After all it was Guruji the God of Flute himself who blessed them to be the Radha of flute. It is a music journey they have chosen consciously and would love to believe that they are truly the chosen ones.
Suchismita and Debopriya, known as Flute Sisters in the world of Indian classical music are making a mark for themselves through sheer dedication and blessings.
They are truly fortunate to receive tutelage from none other than the legendary Master of North Indian classical bamboo flute Padmavibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia ji. Their learned musicologist parents, Krishna and Robin Chatterjee had the foresight to prepare their loving daughters to receive the grace in the form of teaching from the legend himself.
They are graded artists of Akashwani All India Radio, Mumbai Kendra. Both sisters are now empanelled artists with the ICCR - Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
They were awarded the NUFFIC scholarship by the Indian embassy in Holland in the late nineties. In the beginning of the year 2001, Debopriya received the national scholarship awarded by the Government of India’s Department of Culture as an encouragement to her music studies. Both sisters have also received the VRINDABAN GURUKUL scholarship in the same vein.
For over two decades, they have had the honour and privilege to present their art in India’s most prestigious music soirées and some international exposure has added a unique flavour to their performances.
The strains of their flute have reached the connoisseurs across all four continents, namely Americas, Europe, Gulf, Australia and most of Asia. The latest one was a beautiful tour of Canada. The music, hospitality and the warmth of the Canadian people shall remain etched in their memories for a long time to come.
In the year 2008, Debopriya has been bestowed with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Academy.
After much deliberation, Suchismita and Debopriya now also teach with exclusivity, the instrument of flute to a select few and aspiring students.
