From the man himself: It was so fun. You all know who was in it… all the great celebrity friends that I’ve got… it was just amazing. At one point, Kristen Schaal turned to me and she said, “I hope we get to do this all day long.” It was six takes. And we used the sixth take, although takes five and four and three were all great, too, it was kind of hard to… maybe at some point Nerdist will put up take five or some kind of alternate take so you can see some of the other stuff. It was, in fact, one continuous shot… believe me, it was one continuous take. And for every single take, as soon as the camera was off me, I had to run as fast as I could down five flights of stairs (because the elevator was being used) while changing my clothes so I could hit my mark and be there at the end of the video. Jack Black killed. If you think that was the only take that was good - every single take, he was, like, clicking his heels above his head… amazing, amazing energy. And he wouldn’t even take the elevator back up, he was, like, “No, I’m gonna jog up the stairs every time!”
I'm pretty sure Jack HAS been wanting to work with Al for most of his life! I have no proof other than Jack Black being Jack Black. He's Jack Black! Being asked to appear in this video was probably the single greatest moment of his entire life, even topping his wedding day and the birth of his children. Other than Weird Al, there is literally no other celebrity I'd let babysit my kids. Seriously the guy is just so clever, smart and funny, yet he rarely gets the recognition he deserves.
Filmed inside the vintage Palace Theatre in downtown LA.. It's at 6th St. and S. Broadway, across the street from another wonderful old movie palace, the Los Angeles Theatre. You can see the Los Angeles sign through the windows as Aisha dances by.
That moment when you realize they did that entire sequence in one continuos take... with al doing a mintue and a half wardrobe change and racing down to the first floor
nah I think they know how to edit it so it looks that way. brilliant video. Weird Al is really one of a kind and a real treasure. Nice to see these entertainer folk get on board. It is a very special video, very sincere in that entertainers must speak their own language / way of life.
Snoo Lee Wow I figured the same thing, but I just looked it up and it WAS a continuous take. Between this and Word Crimes, Al is coming out with better videos than the real thing.
obeyvirtues Problem is there is some information that it was done as a single take, that they did the whole thing five times. I bet they took the best from each of the five single-camera things and then constructed the video from them.
If you take a look at Al's collar in the beginning of the video, you can see that he is wearing the pink shirt he has on in the end underneath his outfit. Must have been a hell of a rush to be downstairs in time for the clip to turn out good.
In case people are wondering who was used in this video (in order of appearance)... 1) "Weird Al" Yankovic (Parody legend) 2) Aisha Tyler (Comedian, Whose Line is it Anyway) 3) Margaret Cho (Comedian, Drop Dead Diva) 4) Eric Stonestreet (Actor, Modern Family) 5) Kristen Schaal (Actress, Flight of the Conchords) 6) Jack Black (Actor, School of Rock)
I love how all these guest stars dropping by is just supposed to add to it being tacky, but in reality I'm pretty sure Weird Al just called up a bunch of his friends and said "hey, I'm doing a thing, you want in?" and everyone, especially Jack Black, dropped everything to help out.
The difference between Weird Al and parody artists like Bart Baker is that he doesn't disrespect or put down the artist, but makes a new song out of the way it sounds.
@@ChaosRayZero "Smells Like Nirvana" was a little closer to home than most Weird Al parodies, but there was no malice to it. Supposedly, when Al discussed the idea with Kurt Cobain, his only worry was he didn't want it to be about food😁 I haven't heard "Perform This Way", but Lady Gaga's entire music career is based around attracting attention: She was probably elated that Weird Al chose one of her songs😊
*"There was no malice to it."* That's what I meant by "they aren't too mean." *"Lady Gaga's entire music career is based around attracting attention..."* _That's exactly what the parody lyrics are about._ He alternates between describing bizarre things she actually did (such as wear a dress made of meat) and ridiculous things nobody would do (going on stage with your intestines wrapped around your neck and setting fire to yourself), then lets the listener figure out which is which. The one point he takes a break from her crazy outfits is the line "and for no reason now I'll sing in French" (making fun of the original song itself), followed by a line in French (which I don't speak, but online comments claim he either asked "who farted" or apologized for farting). And yes, I've also heard that both artists reacted pretty much as you said. =^)
@@ChaosRayZero I apologize if I sounded arrogant: It never for a SECOND occured to me that "Smells Like Nirvana" could come across as mean-spirited, EVEN a little...that was the idea I reacted to. Al has managed to keep his act clean and positive for almost 40 years. With his talent it would have been so easy to turn to the "dark side"--he could have made every one of his parodies into vicious, sadistic assaults, and people would love him for it... He would 20 times as rich and famous and influential as he is now...Hell, he'd BE Trump😜
Perform This Way may be a little disparaging towards Lady Gaga, but it's just as much of a shot at the people who won't leave her alone because of her style. "My critics will say it's a grotesque display, but they can bite me baby, I perform this way.
I was at that concert, too! Totally awesome. I loved that he walked through the audience when he was singing "Wanna Be Your Lover". Never thought I would get so close to Weird Al!
This is so great! I love the dancing! Whoever did the choreography and direction is brilliant. Not to mention Weird Al himself.... _Weird Al_ is brilliant is what I meant.
Pretty sure Jack Black didn't need any choreography. They just said to him "uh... try to be tacky, I guess?" and that's probably all he needed. He IS Jack Black after all.
There used to be a video of 4 different takes playing simultaneously and it's crazy how in every take Al hits the exact same dance move at almost the exact same time.
I realize this is probably a joke, but if it isn’t: there’s probably dozens of hidden camera shots hidden in the video. For example 1:36, the elevator doors closing were probably a camera cut, that was made seamless with the previous cut
@@artemixzs It IS actually a single shot. From his Reddit AMA: "While it looks like there MIGHT have been an edit somewhere, I absolutely guarantee you, that was all done in ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. That was a bit of a challenge for me, because I start the video on a 5th floor fire escape, and I reappear on street level wearing completely different clothes. That means - for EVERY TAKE - as soon as the camera was off me I had to run down 5 flights of stairs WHILE CHANGING MY CLOTHES so I could be on camera again at the end. Definitely got my workout THAT day!"

"Got my new resume, it's printed in comic sans." Quote of the decade right here "Take selfies with the deceased" This man practically predicted Logan Paul
Selfies with the deceased aren't new. Our great great great grandparents were doing that in the 1800s, no lie. Keep in mind, it was a product of the times; cameras and photographs were costly then. A selfie with the deceased (taken quickly after the death) was something to remember the family member by.
I find it HILARIOUS that musicians (except Koolio) find it a badge of honor to be parodied by Weird Al :) Dave Grohl "When we heard Weird Al wanted to do a parody of one of our songs, that's when we knew we had made it"
@@juliabigger9704 I dunno if it's ridiculous, to be honest with you it's as if Weird Al has foreshadowed the ghouls that take selfies at various accidents (sometimes with death involved as if it's some sideshow attraction for them to gain publicity from.
@jiggus figgusTrue, it wasn't as bad when the video was first uploaded though. Since then it's been nothing but a perpetual decline in morals, and decency.
actually, it has been done for ages when the camera was invented families would pay photographers to take pictures of their deceased relatives because it was very expensive. :P
About a year ago an aunt died and there was someone recording video of the wake the entire time I was there and probably even longer than that. I just kept thinking, "Who is going to watch that?"
The part where they go into the elevator is awesome. Also, the end is impressive. Switching from interior to exterior can be tough due to lighting changes. Did they cheat on the one take? I hope not. What would be the point then?
I saw him in concert last year...and he did this song in reverse, that is, he started in the alley behind the theater and made his way through the backstage, around the building, through the lobby and through the audience and finishing on stage while he sang this, wearing a microphone and on video. It was quite a tour-de-force of showmanship, I thought
Can we just appreciate how fast Al was able to get out of that suit and into the tacky shirt and go all the way to the bottom of the building in 2 minutes and 27 seconds
Fact - these people definitely exist. And like the guy above me said, half the time they got a giant smile on their faces while they're doing it. Then, as if that weren't bad enough, there's the bathroom selfies they take at the viewing or, worse yet, afterwards at the wake, showing off their "sexy" funeral clothes. No shit. I guess it's finally the 21st century. *sigh*
The single take nature of the video is fun enough on its own, but the addition of all these performers coming in and bringing their best makes this easily one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, Wierd Al videos.
Definitely one of my favorites, but every time I think it could be my favorite-favorite, I remember the Amish Paradise video where he lip-synchs backwards. 🤣
That whole video was done in one continuous shot. No cuts or edits. That's insane. The logistics involved must have been complex to say the least. Everyone had to be in position at the right times, including background people, and Al had to do a costume change during it.
@@ImSquiggs Nope. I checked it out. There are no cuts or edits in that part. They just used a pan of the camera as a kind of transition. People may, however, have had a few seconds to get ready while the camera was pointed away from them. Some of the scenes may have been setup to allow for that kind of thing. In the 2005 movie, Nanny McPhee, they used that technique very effectively. The camera points to a part of the attic with nothing in it. Then it points somewhere else. And then when it points back where it was before, suddenly Nanny McPhee was sitting there at a table as if by magic. What happened was that while the camera was pointed away, people brought a table and chairs there and the actress sat down. It's a simple trick, but it really looked good.
@@TerryProthero Yeah, I used to use something similar making home movies as a kid, haha. I couldn't edit, so I would try and stop the camera during a fast swiping motion and then try to restart it during another fast swiping motion in the same spot to make illusions and stuff. Now that I'm looking again I'm inclined to agree with you, it looked a little suspicious the first time through but I guess I can't see any cuts either.
Jack Black wasn't even supposed to be in this video he just showed up dressed like that and started dancing. (Edit: I know this is old, but this is a joke. I didn't think that I would need to specify that)
@Cameron Curtis I don't know if that's true, but Jack Black said that his fanny pack was a last minute decision. One of the crew had it, and he grabbed it from them because he thought it would be perfect. And he was so right. That's some comic gold.
The cool thing about this clip is that he did the entire song _on the street_ at any live performance. He was dancing through Amsterdam with a camera crew and ends up on stage at De Melkweg (a well known venue in The Netherlands) to start the show. Probably the best and certainly most unique piece of performance I've seen.
@@SpaceParanoidX That was fantastic! The Dutch were so chill ... didn't follow ... didn't scream. That one woman just walked away as if Weird Al did this every night. And he pushed that one guy in the face and the guy just laughed. I LOVE THIS!
Yes. We saw him do it at the Hollywood Bowl. The venue is big enough that he didn't have to start on the street. He started at the entrance passing by the security guards. That would be a cool day to be working security.

What a performance
He did that for every venue on that tour. It was super cool. Oh, to have been a straggler in the lobby on that day! He came into the theatre from the lobby at our show, walked right through the audience up to the stage!

I saw him Live once. He intentionally started late and did this song first with the first half being a live video feed of him singing this and dancing on the way to the Stage. It was hilarious!

This was done in one continuous shot. Every single item in frame was thoughtfully and purposefully placed. The fact that the actors lip synced wasn't distracting at all because their expressions looked like what you would expect from how the lyrics sounded. This wasn't a cheap way to bank off of the song, "Happy." This was a labor of love. My deepest respect to Weird Al. You are truly dedicated to your craft. I just can't stop watching this. nah I think they know how to edit it so it looks that way. brilliant video.

Ummm, hello? Digital splicing? Duh.
obeyvirtues Problem is there is some information that it was done as a single take, that they did the whole thing five times. I bet they took the best from each of the five single-camera things and then constructed the video from them.
Just to add another level of brilliance to this video; realize that the entire thing is a single, very long camera shot.
If you take a look at Al's collar in the beginning of the video, you can see that he is wearing the pink shirt he has on in the end underneath his outfit. Must have been a hell of a rush to be downstairs in time for the clip to turn out good.

When you realize it's as much a honor to be on a Weird Al parody as it is to be on the original video.
Or perhaps, it's a bigger honor.
The difference between Weird Al and parody artists like Bart Baker is that he doesn't disrespect or put down the artist, but makes a new song out of the way it sounds.
Have you heard "Smells Like Nirvana" or "Perform This Way"? I mean, granted they aren't _too_ mean...
@@ChaosRayZero "Smells Like Nirvana" was a little closer to home than most Weird Al parodies, but there was no malice to it. Supposedly, when Al discussed the idea with Kurt Cobain, his only worry was he didn't want it to be about food😁
I haven't heard "Perform This Way", but Lady Gaga's entire music career is based around attracting attention: She was probably elated that Weird Al chose one of her songs😊
*"There was no malice to it."* That's what I meant by "they aren't too mean."
*"Lady Gaga's entire music career is based around attracting attention..."* _That's exactly what the parody lyrics are about._ He alternates between describing bizarre things she actually did (such as wear a dress made of meat) and ridiculous things nobody would do (going on stage with your intestines wrapped around your neck and setting fire to yourself), then lets the listener figure out which is which.

@@artemixzs It IS actually a single shot. From his Reddit AMA:
"While it looks like there MIGHT have been an edit somewhere, I absolutely guarantee you, that was all done in ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. That means - for EVERY TAKE - as soon as the camera was off me I had to run down 5 flights of stairs WHILE CHANGING MY CLOTHES so I could be on camera again at the end. Definitely got my workout THAT day!"

"Take selfies with the deceased"
This man practically predicted Logan Paul
Selfies with the deceased aren't new. Our great great great grandparents were doing that in the 1800s, no lie. Keep in mind, it was a product of the times; cameras and photographs were costly then. A selfie with the deceased (taken quickly after the death) was something to remember the family member by.

I find it HILARIOUS that musicians (except Koolio) find it a badge of honor to be parodied by Weird Al :) Dave Grohl "When we heard Weird Al wanted to do a parody of one of our songs, that's when we knew we had made it"
Well, and even Coolio had his reasons. He thought the content of the song was too heavy for it.
Let's face facts, the only reason why Gangster's Paradise is even remotely relevant today is BECAUSE of Amish Paradise.
Gangster's Paradise was just Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise with different lyrics. Weird Al has out lasted a lot of the artists he has parodied.
Farmer James I meant his career has outlasted the musicians he's parodied.
Too bad he covered a Foo Fighters song that most people don't know.
I've never appreciated how this was all filmed in one shot
“I would live-tweet a funeral, take selfies with the deceased.”

The lyrics are just as ridiculous as the video is!
@@juliabigger9704 I dunno if it's ridiculous, to be honest with you it's as if Weird Al has foreshadowed the ghouls that take selfies at various accidents (sometimes with death involved as if it's some sideshow attraction for them to gain publicity from.

About a year ago an aunt died and there was someone recording video of the wake the entire time I was there and probably even longer than that. I just kept thinking, "Who is going to watch that?"

But it is too rushed
@@lexkanyima2195 And??? its amazing rushed or not so many people from shows i seen and celebrities in a song
The part where they go into the elevator is awesome. Also, the end is impressive. Switching from interior to exterior can be tough due to lighting changes. Did they cheat on the one take? I hope not. What would be the point then?
I went to a show of his once. He and his crew changed outfits between every song. He's a pro at this.
WOW
I saw him in concert last year...and he did this song in reverse, that is, he started in the alley behind the theater and made his way through the backstage, around the building, through the lobby and through the audience and finishing on stage while he sang this, wearing a microphone and on video. It was quite a tour-de-force of showmanship, I thought
Can we just appreciate how fast Al was able to get out of that suit and into the tacky shirt and go all the way to the bottom of the building in 2 minutes and 27 seconds

There are! I've seen photos. Mainly young girls saying "Sad that grandma passed!" with a huge smile on their faces. *yikes*
Fact - these people definitely exist. And like the guy above me said, half the time they got a giant smile on their faces while they're doing it. @@AndrewCheshire"Smells like Nirvana"", "White and Nerdy", and "Party in the CIA" are also up there for me.
That whole video was done in one continuous shot. No cuts or edits. That's insane. The logistics involved must have been complex to say the least. Everyone had to be in position at the right times, including background people, and Al had to do a costume change during it.
All for the art.
And had to be in costume.
And then of course, everybody had to have their choreography down to a tee. Including the lip syncing.
Don't want to kill the fun but I smell a camera transition at 2:01... I'd need Captain Disillusion to be sure though
@@ImSquiggs
Nope.

"Got my new resume, it's printed in comic sans"
I audibly gasped at that line.
If I give my resume again it will be in comic sans
I almost fell over laughing at that one too
Same!
According to Wikipedia it's a common font people like to use.
Same lol
Incredible. It was an honor to meet Weird Al when I was very young, hung out with him back stage and got some great pictures. A genuinely kind and humble human being. His respect for other artists and the respect he is shown in return speaks volumes. This video is hilarious, every production is always top notch. He continues to be my favorite comedy parody performer of all time. Just incredible! Every damn time!!
I was obsessed with Weird Al as a kid and I'm somehow just now realizing that he has a couple decades worth of song parodies for me to catch up on and I'm super excited about it!
Don't overlook Al's amazing original songs.
christmas at ground zero, pacman, another one rides the bus, all amazing.
Yeah, In 3D & Dare To Be Stupid & Alapalooza are some of his best early stuff...
@@zoeym4868 and his polka medleys are awesome too
@@EmeraldLavigne can we all agree for a moment that his song about suing is not good though? Like, its really annoying.
I don't know why, but Jack Black being in this makes me happy.
Same XD He's the best
Because you are tacky!
Me too
Same here
Me too.
this is just how jack black goes from room-to-room, they just recorded him
Every time I come here, its for the song and lyrics but I always get absolutely caught up in the video itself and how good the one take is... oh and jack back too obviously, goes without saying
Jack Black still's got it
Hes Jack Black, he doesnt have "it" he is "it".
Jose Rico Taco Nacho Quesadilla Mandela Jones No it's Jack Black, because its a name you make a upper letter for names.

OneDo11arBill ok sorry I miss spelled
If seeing Jack Black in action doesn't put a smile on your face, then you're doing life wrong.
Just the name Jack black puts a smile on my face
Amen to that!
And if you're okay with that, u might just be tacky too.
Agreed!
Didn't really think I'd like his "School of Rock" movie that much beforehand.
About five minutes in...it became "This is gonna become a classic! Hilarious!" 😄
@@unmitigatedgall8732 Nacho Libre, bruh
“43 bumper stickers and a YOLO license plate” might be the greatest lyrics ever
I feel like the line "If I get bit by a zombie, probably not telling you" is the most underrated line in any Weird Al song ever.
"He invented cold fusion and didn't tell a soul "is close
@@stephenolan5539 CNR is so funny all the way through, and a great rock song to boot.
@@alexandre3989
The story of why he wrote it like that is funny as well.
CNR's partner asked only that WAY not make CNR look wimpy.
Al is one seriously talented dude
Gordon Murray saw him in 2012. He was wearing the Fat suit. Unbelievably Agile The best show I’ve Ever seen 🤩
when you really think about it, he's a genius.
