- "Rain on Air Raya Island" is a beautiful song written by songwriter Trường Hải in 1979, he was one of the thousands of Vietnamese refugees living in this refugee camp waiting for resettlement. The song shares the sentiment of Vietnamese refugees in the early wave of Boat People in the late seventies.
This video contains photos compiled from different locations and sources, most are not from Air Raya. If we can find photos from this island, we will update the video at a later time. Thank you for your interest in our presentation.
I used to sing with Chu Truong Hai in the coffee shop. Amazing to hear this song again.
Wow! I can't believe I've found so many of you here. My whole family if 6 made camp there as well from May to Dec 1979, then transferred to Galang & left for California in Late Feb 1980. We came from Saigon, departed from My Tho on a fishing boat. Don't know the number. Incredible!
By any chance it's My Tho 054? Got robbed three times by Thai pirates, floundered into Malaysia only to get tortured and towed out to sea in a middle of a storm. 333 people, 3 died. Sounds like your story?
@@VietquestUSA My family and I were on MT054, all 22 members of us. (For some reason, I remember were robbed 4 times.) I guess I could be wrong as I was only 10 years old. I was so scared as a kid standing in front a scrawny pirate with a gun pointing at us calling out "DOLLAR, DOLLAR!!". After all the pirate ordeal, I remember seeing a bullet hole at the bow of the boat. My Dad was among those that were tortured by the Malaysian Navy. I remember looking over the side of the boat as they dumped one of the dead body and seeing huge shark swimming along side out boat. I never forget how were worried were when we approach the island on next morning after the towed by the Malaysian Navy, we saw another boat ahead calling out to us in Vietnamese. I remember a lot of people on the boat were thinking OH NO we must be back in Vietnam!!. So glad it was just the refugees on the island who happens to pass by.

I was 12 years old on a boat numbered MT054 (My Tho). I was there from 5/79 to 11/79. Never forgot it all the good and bad. Now in San Jose CA. Wish you all happiness and blessings!!!
I was on the same boat MT054 and I was 10 years old at the time. My family and I stayed for 9 months there and we migrate to Galang 1 for another 6 months. I now live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
@@antay69 wow we are truong family from my tho tau mt054 of tin tri got attacked by thai about four times they took gold and gave us chao / gongee to eat, then arrived at malaysia, my brothers and all the healthy young men were ordered to get on their military
ship and beat the men up w butt of riffle, so that we tell people to don't go there. my brothers were bruised and purple like a beaten animals. i was 16 yrs old among the men but was not picked;; i was tall and skinny; if picked and beaten I would probably dead.
those animals were not human. the people of indonesia are wonderful... we now live in dallas texas

My first time to hear this song again after over 30 years. But somehow it doesn't resonate as when I heard Trường Hải sang live on Air Raya camp.

Crazy !! I was on Air Raya as well in 1979. The weird thing is that I came about looking for my boat was because HG937 is part of my password and my girlfriend asked for the origin of the password and ended up finding all the people that traveled on the same boat !! :)

My family and I were at Air Raya in 1979, our boat identification MT595, I was very young then, my memory of the boat was a very reliable and powerful with enough food and water for the trip. We were lucky enough with no Thai pirates attack, they tried but we are too powerful for them. When we were on the island, it seem to be very new, if I am not wrong we were the top 5 on the island. It's a hard life with no proper medication or schooling. If any one on the same boat, i would like to exchange story. My name is Eric, I am now living in Sydney, Australia

Wow, my family was suppose to be registered on this boat before we changed our mind to go on MT054 which was a mistake. We were robbed by Thai Pirates 4 times and some of the men on our boat including my Dad was tortured by the Malaysian navy before we were towed to the Air Raya island. Both MT595 and MT054 left Vietnam at the same time. It took MT054 10 days luckily get to island and our boat broke apart the next day after we arrive at the island. I know that MT595 only take 2-3 days to get to the island. It seems like another life time ago....

We might have been on same boat. did you dock in Air raya and resided there for short time before the outbreak of some sort?
I was 14 when we departed from Ca Mau, Minh Hai on 4/11/79 on boat MH4518 with the sister boat MH4581, together about 600 people, arrived in Letung on 4/15/79 then transferred to Air Raya 2 weeks later, settled there till 10/79 and tranferred again to Galang for 4 more months before arrived in the US.

i came to air raya that time about under 300-400 people ,i thought i came to letung first then next day came to air raya,then few months later airyaya filled up people ,then next is kuku island people arrived in, song writter came after me couple month .i missed alot and now bring back memories.
Toi la Văn Hải rời rach sỏi ngay 22/8/79 đến đảo Air Raya cùng gia đình (8 nguoi + 51 nguoi cùng đi) toi Air Raya ( Letung- Indonesia ) cuoi tháng 8/78 tren chiec tàu VNKG 0916, và là chiec tàu thứ 89 tới ddược đảo nầy; rời Air Raya ngay 19/110/79 sang Galang ở barrack 63 (khu đối diện vớ Bệnh Xá ) cho đến 25/12/79 roi Air Raya sang Singapore va định cư Australia ngay 27/12/79
Ở đảo Air Raya co nhieu kỷ niệm, hòn đảo thơ mộng với những ngày mưa với những những nguoi tình cờ gặp gỡ nhau tren hoang đảo nầy giờ dường như đã mờ đi trong trí nhớ, nhưng mà đêm trình diễn văng nghệ tren đao Air Raya Hải hát vẫn còn như văng vẵng bên tai
