Just did this to my back up unit for the garage. I have a 14kbtu midea duo unit one 1 side of the garage but I notice in the peak of hotter days it struggles. My garage is right at the maximum the unit can handle at 500sqft.
I had a 12kbtu Toshiba that wasn’t in use so I decided to use it. I realized quickly I needed to do the dual hose hack on it. That dam thing was sucking the door shut on the garage and making the garage door flex when it would kick on lol. After converting it to a dual hose design, it completely fixed it.

Thanks so much for this! I just ordered my first portable air conditioner and was super annoyed that it's almost impossible to find a dual hose version in the UK.
Managed to get a good deal on a 12,000btu version with dehumidifier and heat functions and wondered "hmmm I wonder if it's possible to make it dual hose...".
This looks great and you answered my main question which was how to work out where the 'air treatment inlet' is versus the 'machine cooling inlet'.
I also plan on running measurements of how much energy the machine uses over 2hrs before and after the change.
I imagine I will see a massive improvement.
Thanks again for taking the time to document your progress.

@@Roedy_Coedy I did this on my 9400 BTU De'Longhi earlier today, but it wasn't a success. Despite using a slightly larger hose for the intake, the machine sounded as if it was struggling. The outside air was only a couple of degrees warmer than inside, but the exhaust air was 10-15°C warmer than usual and the temperature of the cooled air, usually around 7-8°C, never got below 12°C. The room didn't cool down any faster either. I've thrown in the towel and gone back to single hose operation.

@@nkt1 Does that unit have 2 separate intakes like the one in the video? Mine is the same model as his in the video, i'm going to give it a try

    • @nkt1
      @nkt1 2 года назад

@@rock962000 Yes, very similar layout as the machine in the video, i.e. exhaust outlet and condenser intake at the bottom. Even with a hose attached to the condenser intake, the condenser is not sealed from the rest of the machine internally, so it’s still drawing in some room air.

Thanks for the in depth description, this could've gone terribly wrong for many of us, thanks for the very careful descriptions, you've got a nice calming relaxing voice. Getting ready 'early' before this years heatwaves begin! Thanks!

Correction: What I call the “condenser” is the evaporator. You know when you step out of the shower the cooling effect of water evaporating from your skin.
Inside the A/C unit (in the cold section), the working fluid changes from liquid to gas. It EVAPORATES. That’s how the cold section becomes cold and cools your room air.

Great vid and nice explanation. I wonder that in order to keep noise level down in a bedroom ('cause these portables are noisy), could the unit simply be placed outdoors on say, a covered deck and have the cold evap output air be gathered and ducted back through the bedroom window?
What else would there be needed with this scenario?

I just did this mod but instead of using foam I just duct taped the hose to the grill cover and taped off the rest of the grill. Used speaker gasket tape on the edges of the grill for a better seal. I'm just a little worried now that I could damage my unit being 1: how I just taped the hose to the grill and taped off the rest making the suction more focused on one area and 2: our summers can get up to over 110 F on really hot days. I don't want to damage this unit as it's my life line for summers

I have a dual hose unit and it's soooo much more effective. With the single hose unit (which was also 9000btu) it just felt like the only cool air was the immediate area in front of the unit. It was awful.

So Let Me Tell You What Has Work For Me So Far Like A Charm..On Amazon They Sell The Insulation For The Hose...Make Sure You Get That Cause The Hose Emmits So Much Heat That Is Getting Sucked From Behind. NEXT on The Cold Part On The Top I Justed Added One Ice Pack When I Really Need It To Blow Air Super Super Cold. Just A Small Plastic Ice Pack, Make Sure It's Not Covering All That Part.. I Got On Thag Had 2 Holes In The Middle And Used Velcro The One You Use To Starp Wires Together.. That Has Made A 100% Big Difference I'm My Case.

If you look in the description section of any of my videos, you will find links to the other 2. There are 3 in total. The three videos cover quite a bit of why and how. Right now, I can’t think of anything to add. It’s been very hot and humid here. We find that “dehumidification” mode is more than sufficient to keep our house cool and the air hugely drier. If you have specific questions, I’ll do my best to reply.

I'm buying a similar unit (with a different brand) and I can't find any info regarding that water hose..
Does it have some internal capacity or does it need to be always connected to a drain?
    Thanks!

Does it's ok really works ? Because some people says single hose ac r not insulated from inside so 2nd hose doesn't work.

you can still do it even in that case, but you will have to open the unit up and seal the top half off from the bottom half so it can only suck air in through the hose.
here is a video where someone does just that: ruclips.net/video/rh6fk2AucP8/видео.html
