  • bit.ly/Dual-Single-Hose Portable Air Conditioners use either a dual-hose or single-hose system to vent air. Dual-hose ACs are more efficient, because they don't rely on the air inside your space to cool their internal parts. But single-hose ACs tend to be cheaper and use less energy overall during operation. Watch this video to see how each system works, and decide which type is right for you.

    Single hosed units WILL cause negative pressure. Which means that air has to come from somewhere, AKA outside through the cracks and crevices in your home causing inefficiency. They DO work, just no where NEAR as efficiently.

    I have a single hose unit in my living room, ranch-style house. 2 years running now and has been great! Cools room off fast and my bill has dropped like a rock. Dumped my central air because my bills were always high and who the hell needs to cool off a basement anyway! How many rooms are you in during the day? Dual hose is nice, but several hundred more. Too many people bad mouth these because they are trying to get them to do way more than they are designed for... each person and circumstance is different. Works for me and that is all I care about.

    There is a reason why both window units and central/ductless units all have condensing units outside, because outdoor air is necessary to be both drawn and exhausted from the unit. Single hose doesn't even make sense; using interior air to both blow over the evaporator and condensing coils; they are EXTREMELY inefficient and MUCH MORE COSTLY on your utility bill. Also, at 1:43, that's not a "portable" air conditioner, that's called a packed unit, a type of central/ductless system in which both the evaporator coils and condensing coils as well as the compressor are in the same unit. JUST GO WITH THE DUAL HOSE.

    I have both a single and dual hose air conditioner. I have a single hose because dual hose air conditioners are hard to come by. Let me be the first to say that single hose air conditioners don't work and are only fancy fans that generate cold air for spot cooling if you are standing right in front of them. They will not cool a room. My dual hose air conditioner turns my place into a meat locker and works well. A wall mount unit works even better.

  • @GuillaumeB7
    @GuillaumeB7 3 года назад +13

    Thing not mentioned: Single Hose ACs make terrible wind noise when you close your room door as it will suck in air from outside your room by the gaps around the door. Dual hoses ACs do not have this problem. And if your goal is to just cool your bedroom for example, be aware they will heat the rest of the house. Meanwhile, dual hoses will just slowly leak cool air to the rest of your house.

    Single hose A/C are a waste of energy because when you pump air out your house, the same amount of air has to come in from the outside, which means hot air from the outside is replacing the air displaced by the A/C unit.
    As a result, as soon as you turn off the single hose A/C, your house gets immediately hot again.

    • @asyncasync
      @asyncasync 11 месяцев назад

      When you turn off the A/C then the suction stops too, doesn't it? So what does it matter if the hot air was being pulled back during the cooling? All that would do it make it less efficient, but I do not see how it can result in "lingering hot air immediately coming back" since its not sucking anymore when you turn it off...

    I have owned several single hose air conditioners. Dual hose air conditioners work so much better at cooling a room and are more efficient. Single hose air conditioners work well as spot coolers only (i.e. you stand in front of it). The only other situation that single hose air conditioners work well is late at night when your house is 80F and it is only 70F outside. In this case single hose units cool the space with air conditioned air and the negative pressure that they create sucks cooler outside air into the room.

    Sigh, this video is wrong too. Looks like salesmen are too eager to copy each others' false knowledge without actually understanding anything. Especially the single hose explanation is confusing here.
    Basically, EVERY AC has the hot part (condenser) and cold part (evaporator), and they have separate intakes.The cold loop is sucking air from the room through the evaporator, cooling it and venting it back to the room. The hot loop is sucking air from another intake, cooling the condenser (and thus heating the air), and venting the hot air out of the window.
    Both single and dual hose models have both of these separate loops, even if the intakes are behind the same grill. The cold loop is the same for both types (circulate and cool down the room air), but for the hot loop the difference is that dual hose models draw the air from outside through the intake hose, while single hose model draws the air from the room. Basically, a dual hose model's hot loop simply circulates outside air to cool down the condenser (in the hot loop), while a single hose model's pumps the room air out, creating negative pressure.
    These devices work with the exact same principle, it's only the matter of available connections. A single hose model can even be modified into a dual hose model by connecting the hot loop's intake to outside via another hose, however getting a good seal is difficult and the blower specifications may not be fit for the resistance of two hoses.

    I have a Honeywell single-hose unit. I know, a lot of you guys may harp on me, but hear me out. Where I live, the weather is generally cool (avg. temp 61), it is never humid, nor do we ever see snow in the winter; summer tends to be overcast and foggy, so most homes in this area don't have AC--don't need it. However, every year there is that one rare hot day where it goes above 85. I only use it for those rare days. In the past 20 years, we had only two days at 100 degrees, one in June 2000 and the next time was September 1, 2017--a whole seventeen years between 100-degree days! I bought my unit, uneducated then, soon after getting a heat stroke back in 2017 and I never used it in 2018 and in 2019 I think I used it one day out of two possible (the other day I was out of the country in a much cooler climate). I bought my single-hose unit three years ago and I only set it up and used it once.
    In summary, which type of AC unit generally depends on where you live and how hot it gets in the summer. This video gives the best unbiased, thorough answer.

      Agreed exactly. I have single hose, Haier brand. I live in warm climate, not super hot. In my settings the single-hose works fine, so far. I sort of see why he phrased it "use less energy when they are on". If you compare two units with the exact same rating, the single hose one may draw a little less current, due to the single fan (if it only has one). Or maybe it won't; it still has to pull in air from the outside(via leaks in your windows and doors) and sent it back out, and this is likely to be less air, but hotter air and air pulled against more resistance. If your house is perfectly sealed, a single hose AC WON't WORK AT ALL. So if you have a leaky house and only worry about tripping the circuit breaker, a single hose unit could conceivably draw a little less. But it will stay on longer and even with the same BTU rating, it will have less effective capacity and cost you considerably more to run. So buy a double hose model unless you only plan on using it two days a year.

    • @pcno2832
      @pcno2832 7 лет назад +1

      I can picture one scenario in which a single hose model could actually be less inefficient, and that's if you have only one window, it's so small that the openings from both hoses are up against each other, and you are not allowed to put some kind of divertors on them to keep the hot air from being sucked right back in. This is a real possibility if the window opening is deep enough. An elbow on each or an extension on one side would prevent it, but if you are forbidden from extending the baffle at all, the single hose model might be the lesser of the evils. The ideal two hose arrangement would be with the hot hose higher than the cold one: eg. a vertical sash window with a hot baffle on the top opening and the cold one on the bottom. That might not do much for your interior decor, though.

      Dear Karen. The polite and correct advice to give you would be to absolutely use bothe hoses. Duel hose units are far superior to single. The problem with a single hose pumping out is that the returning air from outside is going in your house before getting to the ac. That just mixes outside hot air with your cool room air.

I install large heating and cooling units in commercial buildings where there is large duct work that is used to carry the a/c or heat throughout the building. All this talk about negative air pressure created by one of those small portable A/C's is a joke. The vacuum created by portable ac units is very small. I think some of the Hvac boys on here are trying to scare people into getting those ductless heat pumps installed. People if you are hot and need to get your room cool dont hesistate picking up a portable ac. I agree with you. Single-hose units take 2 parts air but only return 1 back into the room, the other is discarded outside as hot exhaust. This draws air into the room, toward the air conditioner, which make it hard for cold air to propagate. The unit is consuming the cool air it produces to make more exhaust. And finally, the air that was thrown out as exhaust is replaced by hot, humid air from the outside which is drawn in through bad seal in windows and doors, cracks, vents, etc. I own 2 portable, single hose ACs, and I’ve converted them to dual hose units by making cardboard intake manifolds, which enclose the entire hot coil intake section of the ac and then piping outside air into it with another hose which you can buy for $20. It made both units noticeably more efficient and quieter. Another worthwhile upgrade is insulating the exhaust hose to keep it from radiating some heat back into the room.

    • @YourLocalFireAlarmTech

      I don't think they should be banned, but dual hosed units should be what's popular. There's NO doubt they work FAR better and more efficiently. That's why BTU ratings with single hosed units simply don't match. They need to up the market on dual hosed units, coming from a guy who owns 2 single hosed units. I learned the hard way how inefficient single hosed units are. Granted they DO work, hence why they're popular on the market. But, people don't understand the difference. They just see it as "It blows cold so it works".

    The drawbacks of a single hose AC are reduced somewhat if you have a swamp cooler running elsewhere in the home. The reduced pressure should help bring some of that swamp-cooled air into the room with the AC. So, please let's not ban them, lol. I also use incandescent bulbs in an office lamp during our cold winters (which is a very efficient use!) and I'm bothered that they are so hard to buy these days. 10 years ago we were given a 950W portable single hose AC for "backup uses". we didn't realize we were given "crap" until we're about to move and we uninstalled an 680W split AC fr9om a room. immediately we realized not only the room is hotter than before, but now it consumes way more energy (270W more thru a meter) despite making sure the room is sealed. i'm pretty sure a split AC with half the energy would still emit colder air than this madness.
    do yourself a favor, stay away from these single-hose portable AC unit. if it's too late, just disconnect the compressor and turn it into a circulation fan (mine draws 80W in fan only mode). it may not be a good looking fan but that's the only acceptable use for this crap!!!

      It does though...
      If the inside of the AC is running at 70-80c, and the hot air from ouside is let's say 30-35c, then it still cool down the AC since it's still way colder air.
      You don't want to use the cold air that the AC produce because it would be a waste.

    Bought single hose ac unit at home depot last summer, gave us a good scare at mid day when temperature outside was 105f, bet my roof was at least 120f.
    The unit created such a powerfull vacuum that the stove stractor hood became really hot to the touch, enough to burn after a few seconds of resting your hand on it. We though our attic was on fire, nearly called the fire department.
    After 10 minutes or so of analysing what was going on ot became evident the single hose ac was drawing air through the hood extractor vent tube on the roof. The hood was sealed and we got by through the hotter months, the unit was returned for a refund. Looking seriously at the Whynter dual vent unit this summer.

      Me too. I bought a single hose Haier 10,000 BTU in 2012. Worked really well for 5 years. I used it year round, because I like to sleep in a cold room, while the rest of the household does not.
      Then, last year the water wheel (fan?) broke in it. Made a helluva racket and spewed little plastic pieces all over the place. But the compressor remained intact. So, after seeing several recommendations like this video, we decided to buy a 12,000 BTU, dual hose Haier. Which turned out to be a total piece of crap. It takes forever to bring the temperature down in the room and never gets it to anywhere near what you are asking of it. And if there is humidity in the air, it won't vent out. On humid days, we were constantly having to drain it. The last straw came last week when I had to get up 4 times in one night to drain it. Fortunately, we had purchased a new fan(?) for the old unit and had already installed it. We were keeping it to use as a backup unit. We switched out the new 2 hose unit for the old one hose unit and are now enjoying perfectly vented air conditioning once again. I will never(!) buy a dual hose unit again, if I can help it.

    It is absurd to claim that a dual hose AC uses more energy. This is patently false.
    Single hose is enormously inefficient. The air it exhausts MUST be replaced, there is no choice. Single hose AC uses cooled air from the room and exhausts it out the window. The cool air that was just blown outside is replaced in the rest of the house with hot outside air. A horribly inefficient scheme that basically doesn't work. It cools the one room at the expense of heating up the rest of the house.

      @jameswarner7435 6 лет назад +2

      Yes truthjunkie3, that is exactly how they work. I don't understand how DarkFoxMedia fails to wrap their brain around this fact. Like what magical source of air is the single hose unit blowing outside if it isn't air from inside your air conditioned space? Does it magically teleport outside air into the machine and then blow it back outside? No, by necessity, a single hose unit sucks air from inside the air conditioned room and blows some of it outside. This means warm outside air must constantly leak back inside the room to make up for the amount of air being pumped outside. If you placed one of these single hosed units inside a perfectly sealed room, it would not function for longer than a couple minutes. This is because in the sealed room the unit would quickly overheat from not having any additional air to blow outside.

    • @thomasbegin1204
      @thomasbegin1204 6 лет назад

      James Warner, indeed the single hose unit blows the inside air outside. The thing you must understand is that if the inside air of the room is warmer than the set temperature of the AC, the AC will do its job just fine. Ex: It sucks the 68 degree air outside, blows it back at 61 degree.

    Completely incorrect video. It could not be worse. So bad it amounts to lying. I certainly agree with the previous commenter that single hose air conditioners should be outlawed. As the single hose model operates it is forced to suck air in from the room it's in in order to cool itself. That air is obviously replaced by either outside air or air from adjacent rooms. So it draws warm air into the room you're trying to cool as it operates, thereby heating up the room you're trying to cool. From the moment you turn it on its fighting against its own operation. There is just no reason for these thing to exist.

  • @ryanc7486
    @ryanc7486 3 года назад

    You can't blow hot air out a window without that air being replaced. Single hose ac units are highly inefficient as they suck in hot/humid outside air to make up for what is blown out the window. Quite often this air is pulled through bathroom vents, poor door seals or even chimneys. Single hose units are a HUGE lie and should be environmentally outlawed.
