My granddad was one of these soldiers stationed in England just prior to D-Day, an 18 year old farmboy from Nebraska. Met a girl from Woking who became his sweetheart and married her in 1946. They moved back to Nebraska where they were lived for 62 years. Grandma has passed on, but I will always remember her saying to us kids how this movie was so true to life in depicting things as they really were during those times. Miss you, Grandma!!
@@wflower4709 hello from PA ... thanks for mentioning 75th anniversary of D-Day! My grandfather served in WWI and WW2, my Mom and I were watching the documentary on HBO tonight about 82nd Airborne, by Director William Wyler, sobering and heartfelt... All who served were " The Greatest Generation "... ❤
My parents met in England when my late father was stationed in England in 1953.My mother grew up in London during WW2.She loved the friendly American GI's she and her family met when the soldiers were on leave.Eight years after the end of the war she met a Yank soldier, married him a year later.I love this movie. Thanks for sharing.💙❤
How I love this movie - I'm sure I've watched it at least 4 or 5 times, and will do so, again. The direction, cinematography, acting, music, story...perfection.
LOVED this movie! Saw it when it was released, I think 1979...Powerful, realistic & Beautiful...The musical score transports you to the time! Wonderful Cast, brilliant acting...
My English mother's oldest sister married a Canadian soldier in 1944 and was reunited with him in Canada in 1946.They were happily married for 55 years.
My late father was one of those soldiers. He was in England and Scotland from 42 till June 44 with the 29th division when he left for the invasion. Spent a lot of time in St. Ives, Cornwall. Told me how nice the people inCornwall were to the Americann soldiers.
Hey lasbagman. England will never forget the thousands of servicemen and GI's who played such an important and vital role in the UK during 1939-1945. You must be very proud to have a father who served during WW2. The bond between all those servicemen, the GI's and the Brits, will never be broken. Thanks 'dad'.
Thank you so so much for uploading this. Been looking for yanks for ages. A amazing series from my childhood and oh my, how good does Richard gere look here,
Very realistic movie, Lisa Eichorn an American actress, does a remarkable performance portraying an English women. The northern English accent and mannerism is very convincing. Enjoyed the Lancashire and Yorkshire scenery too. Nice family movie.
@iCWDAVE Radio Venus can professionally transfer to CD, from any audio source. Unfortunately, this can only be done in the studios in the UK as we only have limited facilities here in Los Angeles. Radio Venus would be happy to do that for you, for free, but it will not be until sometime next year.
@iCWDAVE Well I am often in the UK, so I may just give that pub a look next time. I have spoken to many people who were involved with the 'Yanks' when they came over to the UK, and all say that this movie is 'spot on accurate'. That to me, proves it is without a doubt - pure quality. A sequel - ah yes. Providing that both the GI's survived and returned to their girlfriends! I am not sure I could cope with only one of them returning. :(
I wish they had made a sequel I watched war brides on here a few days ago and it wasn't anything like yanks ..Anna friel meets a yank and takes a boat to america after marrying him ..a good watch if u like this sort of thing like me
@iCWDAVE Absolutely. Maybe during the next Memorial Day weekend, this forgotten 'gem' will be aired on TV, or even at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.. While the song over the closing credits (I"ll Be Seeing You" by Anne Shelton), cannot be compared to the actual film score, even that added such emotion to the story, and managed to wrench another tear from the audience.
The book ended differently - the Aunt was there when the cake arrived . The couples were at the train station, but Danny and Molly , Matt and Jean , didn’t see each other - smoke from train .blocked the view . Molly had a baby boy .
Glad you enjoyed it maisarah73. (It was an excellent English movie - not part of a series - which had a succesful theatrical release - and deservedly so)
@iCWDAVE Being a hopeless romantic or just loving this type of movie, is NOT crazy. TheRadioVenus will make enquiries among friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry, here in Hollywood, about a soundtrack , and will post any findings here.
@mrmagicroundcircle I think the point is, there were no local lads about at the time! They had all been conscripted and were away fighting! So the 'yanks' had no competition! (Plus they had chocolate, cigarettes and nylons)
Finally I ordered Blueray from America and got it! In Japan YANKS has not been released even on DVD. In particular, I love this last scene because this scene is a tragedy but there's hope for sure.
zooneyball, the woman was played by the late lynne perrie who played ivy tilsley /brennan in coronation street, at one time, i love richie gere gorgeous
This was such a crappy, cheesy Hollywood ending to what was a pleasant but rather pointless film. One major problem was that the two leads had no chemistry at all. The love story between Vanessa Redgrave and William Devane was far more interesting.

farmerne thank you so much for sharing this with us all. We will never forget all the service men and women who gave their lives for us all.
@farmerne - I finally saw how the movie ended today. Also happens to be 75th anniversary of D Day (June 6 1944)

I was a personal friend of Sir Richard Rodney Bennett for many years. He told me how much he enjoyed working on this film.
It's a fabulous score. Lives in the memory and provokes emotions
A truly lovely film and a reminder of our history Love the music too

@marina hussain - The book was good too. Christine Sparks was the author. William Devane was in it as well.
My Dad was in the RCAF and stationed in England during WW 2 and it brought back memories for him.
I am Italian and I have learned with this movie many expressions that never teach in any school such as So long! Beautiful movie
Girl: "Let me through! I'm pregnant!"
Woman: "So's half the bloody town, luv!"
brilliant film!!!!!
I just love the line: "please let me through! I'm pregnant!" "So's half the bloody town, love!!"
@zooeyhall - They did something like that in the book too!!!
Very realistic movie, Lisa Eichorn an American actress, does a remarkable performance portraying an English women. The northern English accent and mannerism is very convincing. Enjoyed the Lancashire and Yorkshire scenery too. Nice family movie.
One of my acting teachers is in this! The pregnant lady! Wendy Morgan! Can't believe it :-O
Great movie!
No, it was her Aunt in the book, and she didn't have to be told to go to the station!! The cake said "Thinking of you, Love, Matt" in the book.

Three years before he became Cliff Claven on Cheers @ 2:37..John Ratzenburger..

What is the name of the book?
Glad you enjoyed it maisarah73. (It was an excellent English movie - not part of a series - which had a succesful theatrical release - and deservedly so)
A lovekt film abd oignant reminder of our history and how thankful we are to all our amazing Armed Services and civilians in time of war and conflict.

Not many better endings than this one. And how about Richard Rodney Bennett's score, and how perfectly it works for this ending?!
It's an AWFUL ending!!
Excellent film
@mrmagicroundcircle I think the point is, there were no local lads about at the time! They had all been conscripted and were away fighting! So the 'yanks' had no competition! (Plus they had chocolate, cigarettes and nylons)
@TheRadioVenus - True, the British men of that age were in the military themselves.
It's all very well but what about the local lads wouldn't get a look in . I haven't had a look in even when there's no yanks about.
@phylmaker Absolutely. Music of course, adds so much emotion to any movie, and as you say, here, and throughout the movie, the score is perfect.

@zooeyhall a classic line indeed, and, allegedly, seemingly true in many towns and villages. But no one was complaining!!
@farmerne and of course, grateful thanks to your grand father. Thank you Sir.

I love Lynne Perry in this scene ....
