  • I have been experimenting with different plants to see which ones will survive in an African cichlid tank filled with Mbuna. Well, I have found two plants that are fast growing and will not get eaten. Hornwort and Cabomba! African cichlids won't eat these plants.

    Just keep an eye on the Hornwort. It will grow and grow and grow until it outpaces the nutrients in the tank and dies off almost overnight. Keep it under control and it will do great. In my Mbuna tanks I use water sprite and they don't eat it. It has the added benefit of being truly suited for both floating and rooting in substrate. It also will not "suicide" if nutrients get low. Thanks for the video!

    I've found that my Mbuna don't eat Crypts, Swords or Vals. However they will uproot anything that is in a location they don't like. So I just kept replanting the Crypts and Sword until I found a location for them, that the fish approved of.

    I have grown Vallisneria in a Malawi cichlid tank. One of the secrets is to add the plants and have them established before you add the fish. The fish then seem to consider the plants as part of the environment. Vallisneria is found in Lake Malawi.

    You can make some bunches of hornwort and just wrap some lead bands around the base. If you set them in the back corners behind the rock, they grow quickly toward the top and then across the top. Easy to trim, and start new bunches.

    I kept Yellow Labs with Java Fern. I glued it to a faux wooden pyramid of sticks, found commonly in pet shops. I still have the java fern, though the cichlids have moved on so I could create a large (110g) nano community tank.

    I've had similar success with Hornwort floating in my cichlid tank as well. I recently for the heck of it threw a single stem from a ordered "bunch" of Water Wisteria in a corer in the tank with a rock blocking the gravel where it's rooted and they've left it alone so far which surprised me.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  5 лет назад +1

      Do your fish spawn. I could see the tank getting a little over crowded if they have a bunch of fry (you could always sell some). If you have a lot of plants in your tank, I’m sure you could add a few. Just stay on top of the maintenance.

    • @mugzey3018
      @mugzey3018 5 лет назад

      Tazawa Tanks okay, it is not cycled yet I ordered some fritz zyme 7 so I’m going to use that in a week or so. It has already been running for a month and a half I have some small plants but was going to get a bigger plant today and I also wanted to get one more Molly today or one more plattie but didn’t want to have a crash with the Fritz and lose them all because I’m new to the hobby but I am good on maintenance and tests. I really appreciate you answering and your opinion thank you edit: they do not spawn I have mostly females

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  5 лет назад +1

    Java moss, duckweed, and marino moss balls in with my red jewel cichlid and her fry. Babies would pick at plants but think that was for the other edible on the plants, but neither of the breeding pair touched the plants. Momma Red is so mean lately. Had to seperate momma and papa by moving him to another tank before she killed him.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  5 лет назад

      Hi Christy. In my opinion, 30 gallons is too small for peacock cichlids. If you already have 7, I would stop there. However, you may want to look into trading them for a more appropriate fish for your tank...or get a larger tank. As far as filters, the two Fluvals are fine.
