Haha, you're in luck! I just filmed a leopard gecko video this morning. It's not a full care guide (more of a first impressive video), but here's one of the guides I used when I was doing my research: ruclips.net/video/7mXK13p16ew/видео.html
Hi @GirlTalksFish I am planning to set up a community tank with 1 betta fish, 15 Neon tetras, 3 The Trumpet Snail and 5 bronze cory catfish. Do you think a 20-gallon tank would be large enough to keep them happy?
Don’t be afraid to keep a couple live plants with your new fish, though! They actually make fish keeping a bit easier, helping out with parameters and keeping the ecosystem of the tank
Yesssss thank you for this! People thought I was crazy when I saved for months to get the exact equipment I wanted and then just have my single goldfish. Like you said though, I am so happy with it and I even find tank maintenance enjoyable!
Yes, totally agree that it's worth it! I dunno, this may be a slightly controversial video, but it's truly what I believe would be best for my friends who are just getting started with aquariums and think of fish as one step above houseplants. :)
Great video. I've got a 29 gallon tank and a 5 gallon Spec V. Both are planted with easy low light plants. I spent an hour this morning cleaning the glass, vacuuming the substrate, cleaning the impeller on my aquaclear filter and doing a 30% water change. The tank is 7 months old and it is pretty stable now. As soon as I can get into a pet store I will be adding a Betta to my Spec V. There are only plants and snails in there right now. The Spec has been running since March so it has cycled and is ready for a fish. It's a great hobby.
I bought my mom a 10 gallon tank with live plants root tabs fertilizer and a half moon show betta yesterday for an early mothersday gift. I have to care for it obviously but I don't mind. Its a pretty good looking fish.
Irene you sooo nice and caring towards everyone and everything and soo comoassionate towards a tiny creature like a fish. I absolutely love everything about you. I always talk to my fishes and even though many people call me crazy I know that after watching all u do to keep your fish happy talking to them is the least I can do.😘😗😙😚😀😀🤗
Great video Irene. But I think that you left out the most important tip. Cycle the tank BEFORE adding fish. My first betta died most likely because of a non cycled tank. In my opinion, fishless nitrogen cycle should be the go to advice for those of us who love and care for fish. Plus a cycled tank helps save a lot of time and heartache in the long run that is referred to in your description above. That said, the five tips that you give are golden tips! Plus the advice to get house plants if they don't want to take the time you speak of is really perfect. So my advice to anyone who wants to get fish, be patient, and try to enjoy that tank with no fish in it for the first month as it goes through the nitrogen cycle. Put some java fern and anubias plants in it. They can handle the cycle.
With friends who want to get into fish-keeping, I usually recommend a 20-long and silk plants. The 20s are a bit more stable than the 10s, and they have a wider choice of appropriate fish. And silk plants look very nice and are a good substitute for real plants, until the new aquarist feels more confident. For first fish, I usually suggest the common Bronze Cory (corydoras aeneus), speaking of bulletproof fish.
I keep Sumatran Bettas (Betta falx) in a 70-litre tank (a work in progress). They're a native (wild) species that, unlike Betta splendens, are quiet, shy and cohabit well with each other and other quiet fish. I have five of them in this tank with 2x Mystery snails, 3x Sterbai Corydoras and a Blue ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi). 😍
I 100% recommend starting out with corydoras! I find them damn near indestructible and they can be quite busy. I know they're typically bottom-dwelling fish but mine like to swim up and down from the substrate to the waterline like some sort of weird game. They also swim from end-to-end on the bottom and at the top and dart in and out of the bubbles from the air stone. They do however sit very still on the bottom of the tank for quite some time and more than once I've thought one had died when it was just resting.
@@ameliej6690 Plus mine seem to be indestructible lol. I have a bronze cory that's probably a good 4 years old maybe 5, he survived moving from a smaller tank to a new big tank that hadn't cycled (I used filter medium from the old tank and Quick Start) and he didn't seem to be ruffled at all.
I have gone through my fair share of cory's (julies & pandas) and I can never keep more than 3 of them healthy. They all seem to get swim bladder disease in my 20 gal tank, heavily planted with 10 neon tetras.. I don't get how people deem them "haardy" (water is 7.4)
Reallyloved how succinct you were at explaining these tips!! I feel like this was very easy to understand and you provide tips that many people don't say. Also I love how you provide so many examples that are easy to understand :)
This was really good advise. Wish everybody would think about how to take care of fish before they get them. ALL animals need care every day. They need food, water and loving care. also if you have a dog get it used to a leash and teach it to come when called. You will be happy you did if it gets loose in your yard and a road is close by.
Just a tip for anyone shopping at Petco (from a current employee) we can do returns/exchanges on fish only if you have the fish in a separate container from a water sample. We test the water for free, if there is anything wrong with your water parameters we don’t do returns, if nothing is wrong with it we will do the return. 😇
I wanted to thank you for everything that you do on RUclips and the fish community! After watching all of your videos and tagging along in your fishkeeping journey, I was inspired to begin documenting my own journey and just started my own RUclips channel. Hope to collab with you someday
Bugs are good pets too like roley polys and slugs! They are alive and don't take much time depending on what you get. Also they can't feel pain which is a big plus! Also you can use things you have at home
Love this video great content, At 3:10 what did you use for the gap between the lid and filter, been trying to figure out how to do that as well? Thanks.
Good video for beginners! I wish I had you tube when I started keeping fish almost 30 years ago. I learned by trial and error. Killed a lot of innocent fish! I enjoy your channel!
Awesome video! I haven't really had my own fish since i was a little kid and I'm planning on getting some fancy goldfish soon. I've set up the tank and its 65 gallons which is quite large but do you think that's an appropriate size for 3 fancy gold fish or should i only get 2, I'm concerned that it might not be big enough for when they are fully grown. I've done a lot of my own research but i also figured more opinions couldn't hurt
I personally buy mine from aquariumcoop.com because a) I work for them and b) they have awesome customer service and will replace/refund plants if anything happens. Highly recommend! 👍
Easiest smallest cheapest fish tank you could get. 5 gallon tank with a sponge filter and a heater or fan depending on where you live. I live in California averages about 100 to 115 in the summer. Then 50 to 30 in winter, so I only use a heater in winter. For decorations use fake soft plants. You can buy fake grass in a dollar store and pull the pieces apart and let them float.
Another option instead of heaters is to keep your room ~78° F. I keep a few tanks in my bedroom 2 of which have no heaters, but I dont air condition my room unless it goes over 80, and I have a space heater for the winter. I find that its cheaper
This was a great video. I've been in the hobby for about 7 years now and for the life of me can't keep bettas guppies platies mollies alive. Oh but the more difficult one neon tetra rummy nose shrimp yup gottem no problem. Idk why. Im doing good with plants too. The only fake plants I got are in my flowerhorn tank and they are silk. He like to toss em around. They aren't for looks they are for his entertainment. 😅🤣 I do have multiple tanks and yeah its kinda hard to keep with all of em. Planning on upgrading a tank so I can't put some fish together without getting rid of any.
I don't know why y'all don't want to clean you're tanks, its very relaxing for me and very satisfing to vacume all the gunk out, I love cleaning, and I look forward to it, tell me I'm not crazy...
I use my aquarium vacuum to fill up my tank, it seems to stress my fish a lot less than poring the water in. Also made my own sponge filter by adding a decorative flowerpot I got at the dollar store, added a large aquarium safe sponge to a air stone, and rocks on top to way it down. I also use fake plants to hide it's a filter. I don't know if real plants would work here, real plants might float away in this filter. But it looks better than a giant sponge. I'm going to do that for my other tank later, especially because you can hide the air tube with the fake plants I used.
Hi, I have a question about the Java fern in your aquarium at 4:05 minutes? How do you plant or what do you plant all the Java ferns on? Is it on a piece of slate?
Hi @GirlTalksFish I am planning to set up a community tank with 1 betta fish, 15 Neon tetras, 3 The Trumpet Snail and 5 bronze cory catfish. Do you think a 20-gallon tank would be large enough to keep them happy?
Haha, controversial opinion probably, but I remember talking to a PetSmart employee and she said that the GloFish tanks have the fewest deaths. So they are definitely very hardy!
Glofish are lovely, they’re just genetically modified skirt tetra, and they do really well schooling with their non-modified cousins. Probably some of the best behaved community fish out there.
Irene, I think this video needs a new thumbnail or something. This video is AMAZING and should have way more views than this. Maybe a caption next to an picture with your face? I skipped over this video at first because I didn't realize it was YOUR channel! Thanks for sharing your great advice. Hope things are going well!
Hi, nice information, kindly let me know the heater brand and the the equipment name what you are using in the extreme right hand side of the tank, thank you in advance...
Sure thing! I'm using an Aqueon Pro heater (linked in the description), as well as a Hydro sponge filter (www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ARE98/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_pk3TEb4YPC4B3).
hi i just bred my corydoras thanks for your guide. can u give us advice on how to get profit from them im a student and i want to be productive this quarantine.
This is such a great introduction to fish keeping. I love the common sense approach. So many intro.s seem obsessed skills, technology, and sensation. It is as if you are a parent who has been through this before. 😉 The first key point is great. Fish are not disposable. This is a concept lost today on most adults and rarely taught to children. In a disposable society, not all is disposable or should be. Finally, I love the video crew. They lessened the formality of the topic while keeping us cognisant of the fact that much of this is for their benefit. Yours in parenting fish and small humans, Jim PS: Consider a video or blog article on the benefits of pets and particularly fish for children. That could be followed by the best setups and fish for your aquarists.
Awww, thank you so much! I was nervous about being a bit too harsh with the intro, but I think most people think fish are just one step above houseplants. 😅
Girl Talks Fish , Have you seen what Americans do to houseplants? ...... 😵 There is another topic, “the more unusual quotes by fish and plant owners after life goes South.” ... < “So it was the time of Oktoberfest so I figured my German Blue Ram would want beer with dinner .....”>
Well my tip about a fish tank if you don't have a heater right away you take a water bottle hotter warmer than the fish tank and you have to keep heating it up the bottle a little bit more like a water bottle you don't add any water and that simple it's a lot more getting up and down but it does help your tank while you're waiting
Cats and dogs are definitely a lot easier from my own experience, my cat is always like' why a water tank always attracts more attention from my mama damn!'
The bigger the tank the easier it is to keep fish alive and healthy. Go with a 55 gallon minimum. 20 gallons are too small. Lots of accessories for 55 gallons. Lots of used 55 gallon tanks with light, stand, filter, heater, hood you can buy cheap.
Great question! That's actually what I do. I remove some water, dose the tank directly with dechlorinator, and then pour in tap water. Never had a problem with it, but if you want to learn more about how dechlorinator works, here's an in-depth video that I found super helpful: ruclips.net/video/pqfv15XIey4/видео.html
Okay I apologize every time I post a comment it may sound like I'm criticizing and I'm certainly not but I'm hoping to do is inspire you to go to the next step but your videos are already awesome but I see some cracks that you could make additional videos on and help people even further One of the most important things for me was to find somebody who knew an awful lot about aquariums as a friend and they would come over to my place and take a look at my aquarium and give me pointers and teach me things I had no idea about the nitrate nitrite ammonia cycles or about just about any other aspect of the tank I knew I wanted one and I went headfirst into a 20 gallon with six Africans in a pile of rocks. I guess back in 1983 I did have an overflow filter and a heater at the time but I didn't know what I was doing I didn't even know about the proper way to feed fish especially cichlids. Another important aspect and this actually goes way beyond aquariums is that the things that were interested in in sports news hobbies pets etc, those are the ways that we can connect to other people and especially in the aquarium trade Yes there are mom and pop pet stores that's a good place of connection but where you get real connection is with other Aquarius So I strongly suggest joining a local aquarium co-op or association or club in your area which will give you access to people with different experiences and solutions to problems you may face This may seem intuitive and obvious but for a lot of people it's not and would actually solve a lot of other people problems as well In my area there was a guy that we called the pirate and he had his own little pet store out of his house and he was a great font of information on how to do things the old fashioned way He was such a snagly old guy and had some weird fish like the Arizona pupfish that he collected himself which I now know is illegal is all get out. But he started the hobby back in the days of metal tanks and air stones lift tubes and undergravel filters. Some of the old ways are actually good solutions for today's problems Sometimes it's good to know a guy with a whole fish room with excessive amounts of fish that he needs to get rid of because they would be a great source for unusual fish for your tank Now you keep advertising for Petco and PetSmart but I think it would be a good segment for you to convey to the people what exactly they offer to the aquarium hobby. Petco in PetSmart are excellent sources for equipment if you need to have it today and are willing to pay their prices. You're right they do carry the hardiest of fish because in general I have found them not to be as healthy as the mom and pop store in town. In my town it's the animal house and the owner Dale has been doing fish since he was a kid he even teaches at Oregon State University a theology classes and is well known for his bird breeding large ornamental goldfish breeding and many other species as well. He is an avid spokesman for dwarf cichlids and Africans in our area. Yes I can consider him a mentor If I go to PetSmart and I ask a narrow specific question about any of the fish tank issues I have had in the past , I quickly discover that it's unlikely that these people have even owned a fish tank. But we're talking about the nature of big box stores versus specialty hobby shops. There's also another certain truth that the big box stores can run at a loss and I mean lose fish left and right as long as you buy your pet food there whereas the mom and pop store can go broke if they don't sell three or four fish and the remaining one fish may die or live to the end of its life in that pet store I think these deeper issues would be great fodder for your videos. I also understand that you may not want to step on toes in this industry and I would respect that as well Carry on being awesome and great this is the first video that I ever saw your kids they look great I think a segment on custom aquariums might be interesting I've been interested in hillstream loach lately and considering building an 8-ft long stream tank that's maybe 12 to 18-in wide but 8-ft long and maybe 18-in tall with a unidirectional flow with the total intent of displaying the fish in a naturalized habitat If I ever do I'll send a message back Thanks and have a great day you should be proud of excellent work I'm so old that the only information we had in the old days were ancient black and white axle rod books in dreamed of going out to the Amazon and catching our own fish Now with RUclips it's absolutely stunning of what people are actually doing Pe
HEY MY SISTER JUST GOT A NEW BETTA!! BUT HE WONT REALLY EAT HES PICKY WE TRIED BRINE SHRIMP BLOODWORMS AND HIS NORMAL FOOD THE BETTA BUFFET PELLOTS ANY TIPS GUYS?? :( also he eats it but spit the food out...
Well dont be to worried bettas and other fish will not eat for a few days because of the new tank! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A 5 GALLON OR UP. Tell your sister that she does not have to worry but if he has not eaten on 5-6 days he may be sick!
@@johnxporter thx his tank is 3.5 gal he is eating now and has even made a bubblenest but we plan to upgrade to a 10 GAL in the future he has a live plants in his tank as well
As far as the light issue, I don't think its as simple as "Just turn the light off when you leave the room" Fish are like any other animals and need a day/night cycle.
Try to help new people to the hobby, but some you can’t. Was at LFS and person came in and complained about the $60 worth of fish she bought for her new ten gallon tank and none made it. None of the fish she mentioned should of been in a ten for any thing other than a quarantine.
Anthony Ragan it could also be how platies are often kept in the markets where I live, there usually isn’t qt in the stores so I guess that might be the problem.

Thank you so much! My best friend, who doesn't even keep fish, actually suggested the litter box analogy. 😸
What a great analogy!! 😁
Don’t be afraid to keep a couple live plants with your new fish, though! They actually make fish keeping a bit easier, helping out with parameters and keeping the ecosystem of the tank
Yup. Anubias, Java fern, Trident fern, swords, dwarf sag, bacopa and some crypts all are very easy to grow.

Maintaining an aquarium is all about balance - livestock, plants, substrate, water chemistry, and general upkeep (eg. filter change, feeding).
One reason I like your videos is BECAUSE you only have a few tanks instead of a fish room of 60 tanks. I’m so glad you included that in your video!

Sure thing! I'm using an Aqueon Pro heater (linked in the description), as well as a Hydro sponge filter (www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ARE98/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_pk3TEb4YPC4B3).
@@GirlTalksFish thanks
Nice litter box analogy :)
Yes, I totally stole it from my BFF! 😂
hi i just bred my corydoras thanks for your guide. can u give us advice on how to get profit from them im a student and i want to be productive this quarantine.
i have a question, can i keep my heater fully in the water? like the wire part i’m afraid that part is not water proof
what fish are good or neutral with ghost shrimp
This is such a great introduction to fish keeping. I love the common sense approach. So many intro.s seem obsessed skills, technology, and sensation. It is as if you are a parent who has been through this before. 😉
The first key point is great. Fish are not disposable. This is a concept lost today on most adults and rarely taught to children. In a disposable society, not all is disposable or should be.
Finally, I love the video crew. They lessened the formality of the topic while keeping us cognisant of the fact that much of this is for their benefit.
Yours in parenting fish and small humans,
Jim
PS: Consider a video or blog article on the benefits of pets and particularly fish for children. That could be followed by the best setups and fish for your aquarists.
Awww, thank you so much! I was nervous about being a bit too harsh with the intro, but I think most people think fish are just one step above houseplants. 😅
Girl Talks Fish , Have you seen what Americans do to houseplants? ...... 😵
There is another topic, “the more unusual quotes by fish and plant owners after life goes South.” ... < “So it was the time of Oktoberfest so I figured my German Blue Ram would want beer with dinner .....”>
Plus great video😀😄😆😆❤❤❤👍👍
what 2 size filters do you have in your community tank?
Well my tip about a fish tank if you don't have a heater right away you take a water bottle hotter warmer than the fish tank and you have to keep heating it up the bottle a little bit more like a water bottle you don't add any water and that simple it's a lot more getting up and down but it does help your tank while you're waiting
Just get a air pump and sponge filter, and start the cycle process first in any Tupperware container. Then research on what fish to get.
I personally think #1 tip for beginners is understanding how nitrogen cycle works. Before buying any fish. #2 you can’t be lazy on doing maintenance.
Was that stuff around the dogs neck to like prevent him from biting the leash ?
Ah, it's the illusion leash. It helps keep the leash higher on the dog's neck.
15g gravel Fern Anubius Buce? Moss and 6 Tetra. Light Heater(depend on your weather) and filter. a easy way
Cats and dogs are definitely a lot easier from my own experience, my cat is always like' why a water tank always attracts more attention from my mama damn!'
The bigger the tank the easier it is to keep fish alive and healthy. Go with a 55 gallon minimum. 20 gallons are too small. Lots of accessories for 55 gallons. Lots of used 55 gallon tanks with light, stand, filter, heater, hood you can buy cheap.
Is it okay to put dechlorinator in the aquarium while filling it with tap water?
Great question! That's actually what I do. I remove some water, dose the tank directly with dechlorinator, and then pour in tap water. Never had a problem with it, but if you want to learn more about how dechlorinator works, here's an in-depth video that I found super helpful: ruclips.net/video/pqfv15XIey4/видео.html
That's what I do also, w/o any problem!
Okay I apologize every time I post a comment it may sound like I'm criticizing and I'm certainly not but I'm hoping to do is inspire you to go to the next step but your videos are already awesome but I see some cracks that you could make additional videos on and help people even further
One of the most important things for me was to find somebody who knew an awful lot about aquariums as a friend and they would come over to my place and take a look at my aquarium and give me pointers and teach me things
I had no idea about the nitrate nitrite ammonia cycles or about just about any other aspect of the tank I knew I wanted one and I went headfirst into a 20 gallon with six Africans in a pile of rocks. I guess back in 1983 I did have an overflow filter and a heater at the time but I didn't know what I was doing I didn't even know about the proper way to feed fish especially cichlids.
Another important aspect and this actually goes way beyond aquariums is that the things that were interested in in sports news hobbies pets etc, those are the ways that we can connect to other people and especially in the aquarium trade
Yes there are mom and pop pet stores that's a good place of connection but where you get real connection is with other Aquarius
So I strongly suggest joining a local aquarium co-op or association or club in your area which will give you access to people with different experiences and solutions to problems you may face
This may seem intuitive and obvious but for a lot of people it's not and would actually solve a lot of other people problems as well
In my area there was a guy that we called the pirate and he had his own little pet store out of his house and he was a great font of information on how to do things the old fashioned way
He was such a snagly old guy and had some weird fish like the Arizona pupfish that he collected himself which I now know is illegal is all get out. But he started the hobby back in the days of metal tanks and air stones lift tubes and undergravel filters. Some of the old ways are actually good solutions for today's problems
Sometimes it's good to know a guy with a whole fish room with excessive amounts of fish that he needs to get rid of because they would be a great source for unusual fish for your tank
Now you keep advertising for Petco and PetSmart but I think it would be a good segment for you to convey to the people what exactly they offer to the aquarium hobby.
Yes I can consider him a mentor
If I go to PetSmart and I ask a narrow specific question about any of the fish tank issues I have had in the past , I quickly discover that it's unlikely that these people have even owned a fish tank. But we're talking about the nature of big box stores versus specialty hobby shops.
There's also another certain truth that the big box stores can run at a loss and I mean lose fish left and right as long as you buy your pet food there whereas the mom and pop store can go broke if they don't sell three or four fish and the remaining one fish may die or live to the end of its life in that pet store
I think these deeper issues would be great fodder for your videos.
I also understand that you may not want to step on toes in this industry and I would respect that as well
Carry on being awesome and great this is the first video that I ever saw your kids they look great
I think a segment on custom aquariums might be interesting
I've been interested in hillstream loach lately and considering building an 8-ft long stream tank that's maybe 12 to 18-in wide but 8-ft long and maybe 18-in tall with a unidirectional flow with the total intent of displaying the fish in a naturalized habitat
If I ever do I'll send a message back
Thanks and have a great day you should be proud of excellent work
I'm so old that the only information we had in the old days were ancient black and white axle rod books in dreamed of going out to the Amazon and catching our own fish
Now with RUclips it's absolutely stunning of what people are actually doing

What is that metal thing in the beginning in the vid
Ohh eemm geeh. Im soo guilty with MTD hahaha1 got 5 tanks in a month and i still.have the urge to get more
HEY MY SISTER JUST GOT A NEW BETTA!!
@@johnxporter thx his tank is 3.5 gal he is eating now and has even made a bubblenest but we plan to upgrade to a 10 GAL in the future he has a live plants in his tank as well
@@Elisayum Bubblenest means he is ready to mate, learn how to propagate bettas, get a female one and have fry!
what kind of fish can you put in a 5 gallon without abusing them?
Betta fish
4:08 I have the exact same Betta fish
Yay! He's a beaut, for sure. 💙
That plastic bag watering technique though...thanks!!
Lol, I was afraid some people would be like, "What in the world is that crazy woman doing?" Glad you appreciated it!
Cute dog
As far as the light issue, I don't think its as simple as "Just turn the light off when you leave the room"
Fish are like any other animals and need a day/night cycle.
No worries, there's always ambient light in the room. :)
What about a seasoned tank
Is betta fish need tannin in water( and why don't you have it in your aquarium)
Tannins are good for betta fish, but more necessary if you're breeding them.
@@GirlTalksFish thank you for your helpful response

HELLO!!
a single nerite snail is very easy for managing algae
I allmost never use a heater, and pair guppies in 2-3 gallon tanks
yay
ive had my blue glo fish for 6 or 7 years. like you said, BULLETPROOF
Started with 2 tanks (29 and 75 gallons). Whoops!
4:10 dude people who get their 3 year old a fish are the people who keep it in this thing
marimo moss balls are super easier for beginners
Those catfish move around quite swiftly

My dad bought golfing and all died but 1. The littlest one survived.
Try to help new people to the hobby, but some you can’t. Was at LFS and person came in and complained about the $60 worth of fish she bought for her new ten gallon tank and none made it. None of the fish she mentioned should of been in a ten for any thing other than a quarantine.
Yes. Honestly, I wish all new fish keepers had a friendly fish mentor to help them out.
Ι love fish keeping but everything would be easier if water parameters didnt exist!!!!😀😀😀😀😥😥😥😥
For sure! I need to make a cycling video once I'm done with all my experiments.
@@GirlTalksFish Yes please!😆😆😆😆😆😁😁😁😁😁❤❤❤❤
Fish are not easier, repeat fish are not easier. When u go to the pet store and choose fish or a hamster. Go for the hamster😂
Hm, really? Playtime’s that I’ve kept seemed more sensitive than other livebearers
Maybe they were genetically weaker from inbreeding to get the nice colors. in my experience, platys are really hardy.
Anthony Ragan it could also be how platies are often kept in the markets where I live, there usually isn’t qt in the stores so I guess that might be the problem.
@@thehornwortofhornwort9832 Very true.
Get the water conditiner in the bucket with new water not in the tank.
you want the chemic to happen in the bucket not with your fish in the aquarium
