I have been a sound engineer for 30 years and I can confirm the enormous quality of these headphones, the comfort! mechanics and also by a frequency curve which allows you to work for a long time without fatigue. the best mixing headphones for me...I would like to point out that I have around ten reference headsets
I think something important to note here is that the HD 490 Pro does something the NDH-30 and Sony MDR-MV1 also do, but no other Headphone including the DT 1990. They sound like flat measuring Studio Reference Monitors. That is how they are made and how they are supposed to sound. The HD 490 Pro sounds like a set of Neumann KH 120 II Speakers and those are the most accurate and correct sounding Speakers that exist. So these Headphones might not sound how someone want them to sound, but they do sound correct/accurate and that is important if you're mixing and mastering music. They don't have an large soundstage, but they have exactly the soundstage of the Song you listen to. And this is their feature because when you're mixing your music with Headphones that have gigantic soundstage, you end up mixing them with dull and rolled-off treble and they sound like having 0 soundstage on every Headphone except the ones you mixed them on. They are designed to be a reference, to know what "Neutral" sounds like, like the NDH-30 and the MDR-MV1 (even though the Sony ones use a slightly difference reference). So they do not have boosted/recessed mids, they have exactly the mids of the song. They do not have boosted bass, they have exactly the bass of the song. They have neither an large nor an small soundstage, the have the soundstage of the Song. In the musician world, we call that transparent. They disappear and show you, what your song sounds like without modifying any aspect of it. The DT 1990 have pushed lower mids and especially pushed treble, so compared to the DT 1990, they do sound like they have sucked out mids and a smaller soundstage. But the DT 1990 does not sound correct/transparent, so whatever marketing BayerDynamic tells on its homepage (i actually do not know) the DT 1990 are not Studio Reference Monitors and everyone who owns a set of Reference Studio Speakers can confirm that. Until now musicians and especially mixing/mastering engineers thought "That is just because Headphones can not sound like speakers" and we accepted those wrong sounding headphones and fixed them with EQ. For the fist time, we have a set of 3 Headphones, that are affordable, that all sound correct and accurate and need no EQ and can be used for critical mixing/mastering work, out of the box. And for exactly that reason, i enjoy them when listening to music with them. They just disappear and make the music sound how the music sounds.
If you haven't already, you should consider creating a RUclips channel reviewing headphones. So many reviews I've watched are either wishy-washy, overly-analytical and elitist-sounding, or just forgettable. But your assessment of the HD 490 Pro was well-articulated, and to the point. Good job! 🍻
The last sentence highlights the difference from person to person. I listen to music to have fun. To get touched. I don't care how the song was made to sound like. If changing a pair of headphones or doing EQ can make it sound more engaging to me, I would do it.
Why would you buy a flat, Studio Monitor for Mixing and Mastering then? Sennheiser's advertisement is pretty clear, good is a pro tool for professionals who want (or need) am unaltered Version of the sound. That's like buying an Formula 1 car and complaining it's inconvenient for grocery shopping and family vacation.
@@shirakawamaseru Um, where in the post was the commenter complaining about buying the HD 490 Pro? What I got from it was their explanation of how it and other neutral studio cans work, and their remarks were pretty positive.
It's funny how price is often a main thing that is brought up the most in HD 490 Pro reviews. Josh thinks it should be 25% cheaper ($300), yet the Beyer DT 1990 Pro he compares it to is 33% more ($529), and the 660s2 is 25% more ($500). The list price for the HD 600 and HD 650 are more than the HD 490 Pro, although they are usually deeply discounted these days by the consumer division. Often the phones the 490 is getting compared to more-or-less require a powerful headphone amp, while the HD 490 Pro's can be driven from most things in a studio. I would still like a serious reviewer to compare and contrast with the 62% more expensive Neumann NDH-30 ($649.)
Hello, thank you for this very thoughtful and detailed Sennheiser review. Back in the late 90's I bought a pair of HD 580 Jubilee, HD 565 Ovations, and HD Reference headphones. Family members made off with the Jubilee and Ovations and I gave the HD 545 to my wife to use with her computer. Well she didn't use them so we sealed them and put them in storage. Just rediscovered them a couple of weeks ago - mint condition but replaced ear pads and head band - they sound really good so got to thinking I should get some new Sennheisers so just received the new HD 490 Pro Plus which are great being 8 out of 10 across the board! No more crappy cables, ear pads, head band or 3 blob sound stage! Price is a premium as they are brand new on the market. We should also consider that Sennheiser Pro division has lost the entire 600 line to the consumer company, so this is a new first for the professional products company, seen in that light not a bad start.
People When Joshua said HD 600 are the best this is in his opinion and taste. That doesnt make 600 the best of them all. HD600 are the best at vocals by smooth out everything else, HD650 are the smoothest warmer of them all and the best for this, HD660s are the most Lively best imaging separation and bring instruments in the mix of them all and 660s2 have the technical capabilities of 660s and signature but smoother on treble and more sub bass. So the BEST HD6 is what U like more and not what others say . If u like not so Vocal focus Headphone then 660s and S2 is way better headphones and if u like warm slow smooth sound get the 650 thats all...
Very true at the end it's personal preference I have had all 6XX headphones , hd 580 , hd58x , 600 , 650 , 660s and now 660s2 to me the 660s2 is just perfect and I like them the most out of the 6xx line I also had Sennheiser top line hd700 and hd800 , hd700 was great but I couldn't live with the 6khz peak and the hd800 that I had very briefly was outstanding but not suitable for my music tastes and that's why I settled with hd 660s2 it does it all great although I wish it had a better soundstage, maybe one day they will launch hd 700s2 and I will be there to give them a go
@@ccdani2 Great post, I have all HD 5 and HD6 line i collect them, but never had 700 or 800. So thanks for sharing your opinion, Right now on my PC i have my 660s , and for music to me the best are HD660s2 . But some times when i want to impress someone with Vocal songs , i use HD600 , the only Headphones that i dont use often are then HD 650 because right now i am not in the mood of Metal, and harsh old punk in my opinion these songs need smoother headphones . I have Heard people saying that HD700 are AMAZING Gaming and Movie headphones great imaging and Soundstage, i also know that my 660s have Blue Coil driver and also HD700 have Blue coil driver and both of them 150ohm, So? are the same driver ? maybe... But if we consider that HD660s have the biggest soundstage , great imaging then maybe yes they are same driver , HD700 have different Construction the drivers are far and with angle so i guess that helps alot also, on HD6 line they are close and flat . I think that HD 5 line have more in common in their construction with old HD 700 they have angle drivers and a bit bigger soundstage, So and HD5 Construction with HD 6 driver in them would be an intresting Idea . Honestly i had 6XX and an old 599 and i was ready to swap and mod drivers to them , but i had to destroy everything on them and i stopped.
This is not for audiophiles or consumers. It is for people who mix, master and create music. I suggest the “busy” tracks you thought muddled the bass was not because of the headphones but rather you were hearing poorly mixed music, and the HD490s were doing their job and revealing a problem in the mix.
It will be interesting to see how the Pro company will start to deviate from the headphones by the non-pro Sennheiser company. I think making the build stand out is a good place to start.
High! It's amazing to hear you talk about "sound adaptation". I think you are the first to talk about our capacity to adapt our listening to a sound signature. It's very important to talk about this. Thank you for that.
Don't forget that the package includes a license for the dearVR MIX-SE plugin for $99. The only question is whether it is necessary. I ordered these, I hope they don’t disappoint me.)
Your videos are absolutely the best. It’s like you have 150 people behind the camera….writing, producing, filming, editing and so on. Good TV quality and way above what’s going on RUclips. A close second, but quite far is MKBHD.
These headphones are primarily for mixing and mastering and should be reviewed for this use case. I find the HD 490s excel in the studio setting where you are looking for a good level of neutrality and faithfulness. They are great for long sessions due to their high level of comfort.
There’s not one Sen anymore. This hp comes from the original company now dealing only in the Pro space. The 560, HD600 series, HD800 and all the rest of the consumer products have been bought. So there is no point wondering why Sen brought out these when they already have the others. The answer is they don’t.
Great review! I was just wondering. I currently own the HD650, and I really like how they sound, especially with SoundID correction, but I'm so sick of the long cable that I constantly end up driving the wheels of my chair over and also that it has the double wired cable in both earcups. I know it sounds stupid, but I just feel like i constantly need to untangle them everytime I bring them out of my backpack, and it also feels kind of "choking" to me with having the double cable under the chin for 8 hours a day. I do post audio for TV shows and often need to work on headphones because I travel a lot and cant have a monitor setup. My question is what headphones do you recommend that sound similar to what I'm used to with the 650, but maybe has a better soundstage and more comfort? is the 660s2 an option? Or is there something from another brand like beyerdynamic that could fit? My colleague on the show I'm working on now is actually in love with his HD400, but I feel like they are way to harsh in the top end for my own taste. Thanks in advance!
This is also really only ~ $60 more than the AT R70x, which is also very comfortable, and also with decent soundstage. I'd be interested in that comparison. If this sounds better overall, they may not need to reduce price by much to sell well.
New to audiophile headphones, have used Audio Engine for the past 10 years. A2+’s, A5+’s, HD3’s, HD6’s, S8 Subwoofers. Grew up with Sony Noise Cancelling headphones, Bose Quiet Comfort 2’s, and Beats Studios 10 years ago. Got my first Phillips SHP9600’s, and I love them, they seem to be improving a bit, and I’m assuming drivers have a break in period similar to high quality speakers.
I’d say an “8/10” on all areas of sound performance while being really comfortable is enough to somewhat warrant the price tag. I think the regular version should start at $350 and the Pro Plus should be $400. I don’t think the extra goodies warrant it being $80 more.
I agree! But I also agree with Josh here - at 300, this would be a good deal, and make it a more appealing deal than the 6x series to more people, which is likely what Sennheiser would actually want, since the 6x series went to Sonova recently.
@@pokrog I'd say it is - it all comes down to what you're looking for, I suppose. Out of curiosity, what would you consider a "jack-of-all-trades-8/10"-headphone?
@@Protonaut I'm not sure, that's actually a pretty good question. I will say that after using the HD490 Pros for a week straight as the only headphone I used to really feel it out, swapping back to my modded HE6se v2 was quite literally night and day. I felt like I had superhuman hearing and everything was as it should be. If I had to rate the HD490 Pros technicalities, I'd put bass at about a 5, mids around a 6 or 7, treble at maybe a 5, stage was pretty decent and maybe a 7 purely because of the even spherical shape of the stage, separation at maybe a 5, imaging was very good and I'd call that about an 8, overall clarity at maybe a 5 if the HD560s was a 6, timbre a solid 6, detail at maybe 5, tuning with either pad I'd say roughly a 6 or 7 but it's not great with either even if it does work well with some genres. Comfort for me was a solid 9 though with the velour pads, the cloth pads were a little too shallow for me and my ears rested on the inside of the cups a lot. Build seemed great too, light and forgiving with a little flex, but very strong feeling without coming off as brittle. I'd say the HE6se v2 hits all of those at around an 8 or better with bass being a firm 10 and imaging being a 9 or 10. I can't stress enough that going back to them was like I had gloves between my ears when using the HD490s, there just isn't any detail or clarity to speak of with the 490s.
@@pokrog Very interesting! What mods did you do to. The HE6se V2? Haven't tried them myself yet, but looking at a few measurements of these, there seems to be a massive cut at 2k, and some peakiness in the treble. Bass response looks super duper solid though. Do your mods adress any of those things?
Josh speaking of comfort you should definitely review the Sivga Luan which is priced around 350-400 💲, I am really curious to hear your opinion on these.
Good to know. Although the fact that you rate the Beyer DT1990 favourably is puzzling. I thought the DT1990 was one of the most fatiguing headphones I've heard. Couldn't hear it for longer than 3 mins.
@@LukasBlau If you are referring to the DT1990 then I don’t agree. I found it very harsh. Despite burning in for more than 96 hours! The sense of newfound detail is superseded by fatigue.
The pads are marketed as having comfort grooves for glasses, is the comfort difference noticeable? I'm curious how it works, is it just an absence of foam underneath the cloth where the glasses arms would be?
You can't really see it, but you can feel a small indent when you run your fingers over the foam. That and the lesser clamping force makes wearing glasses not as annoying when compared to some of the other headphones I've tried over the years(mostly audio tech stuff, marshall and Sony wireless). It's my first Sennheisers though, so I can't really compare it against the other Senns.
Tengo los HD-660S2, vale la pena invertir en esto HD490 Pro si es que quisiera subir de nivel auditivo? Gracias por tu respuesta. Saludos desde México.
Josh if I remember correctly, you really liked the IE600 (and loved the IE900). Which of all these Sennheiser headphones are the closest in sound signature and that excellent detail retrieval to you?
Ciao Joshua apart of Sennheiser HD 800,what do you prefer beetween HD 600-HD 590, HD 660 s2, HD 650,or the newest HD 490 ? In Italy we saw the HD 600 Sennheiser at 254 euro= 273,43 $$$ a very good price, I bought 2 years ago the HD 560s .According Sound desinger HD 600 remains the best open back Sennheiser, whwat do you think of? thanks for reply and best regards Max from Italy
Definitely found myself disagreeing with the 490 Pro vs 660s2 assessment. I preferred the mixing pads on the 490 Pro and found the sound to be damn near my perfect tonality with respectable technicalities to boot, but what made me return them is that 1. my ear touched the inside fabric on the left side and I found it very annoying, and 2. the separation and layering was disappointing to me. Conversely, I find the 660s2 to have nice tight bass (could be more textured), smooth detailed treble, and the most natural mids I've ever heard. Plus, I find the detail, layering, and separation to be a step up from the 490 Pro's. Also, I'm finding the 660s2's to be more comfortable than the 490's were (though my pesky left ear is still touching the driver fabric on the 660s2, but it's MUCH softer and not scratchy like the fabric on the 490's). Oh the wild variability of the human ear lol
I would agree with you! Luckily, I don't have the ear fabric touching issue myself. I feel like the mixing pads are a little underrated/overlooked by reviewers, which is a real shame. Make bass transients feel tighter too.
I can say after almost 2 weeks with these for gaming, they have been very nice, and the sound staging with Dolby Atmos has been amazing for FPSs and I've also really liked listening to music on Tidal with these. I'm happy with my purchase. (Paired with the Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 4th Gen).
joshua, u said that at 300 (400 but now its at 300) dollars the sounstaging is adequate ], for you which soundstages better than this at that price point
Is it worth upgrading from the 560s for music, listen to lots of music with more bass, and gaming? I was going to get the 660s2 for the extra bass too but would like the soundstage (though if they're close who cares).
Soundwise, I wouldn't say it's worth the extra money at all, the 560s are REALLY good for the money. Only upgrade to these if you have an issue with the comfort or the slight upper mid bump on the 560S, which was the case for me. Other than that, the slight upgrade isn't worth the cost IMO.
Get closed back ones. I use Momentum 3 primarily for heavy base music while on the go (dnb, dubstep) and they are incredibly satisfying. For comparison - at home I use 660S. Great for gaming and podcasts, terrible for EDM.
The production quality of your videos is good, but I feel like there could be some benefit to you introducing your headphones a bit better. Esp in sens where the model number doesn't always indicate it's intended purpose/target audience/competitors so we know what to compare them to.
@@Protonaut Oh excellent, thank you for that, much appreciated, I was wondering if there would be any distortion given they're a dynamic driver headphone with some minimal EQ adjustments if I needed to tweak the sound slightly more to my tastes.
I have the 900 Pro X ... upgrading from this is ... complicated :) I know that these are better for gaming, but not in a way that is worth almost the double of the price.
Hi Joshua. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on my grail headphone. I have recently purchased a pair of Meze 99 Classics and enjoy them very much. My ambition is to eventually purchase a pair of Meze 109 Pro's. As an music enthusiast, but not a wealthy person by any means, this is the upper limit of what I am prepared to spend. I find them exquisite looking and really appreciate the repairability. My question is this, are they an 80/20 purchase i.e., am I getting 80% of the best sound available on any headphone for around 20% of the upper limit cost, besides the Sennheiser HE-1's and the like, obviously. Thank you.
My thoughts exactly. Had my XS's for a couple weeks now, and I couldn't imagine going with anything else. Especially considering they were $280 refurbs in brand new condition from HiFiman.
@@Mariscos420 I don't think there's an issue with the headphone but with how people sit. Your PC/gaming/office chair is supposed to have neck support if you're gonna be sitting for hours, period.
8/10 on everything, does everything very well. Yet you don’t think they should cost $400. The 660S2 are $600 and being that the 490 Pros are better, I think the $400 price tag is very good. They are the best all around headphones Sennheiser has to offer. I think the $400 price is pretty good considering you are getting such excellent headphones in every category as well as being the most comfortable headphones available that do everything so well. The 560S made the 650s look bad in comparison and now the 490 Pros make the 650s literally irrelevant. Good review though, far better than DMS’s reviews. I don’t think he even used them before reviewing them. Plus you just can’t trust that guy as he flip flops on pretty much everything he says one video to the next. Nothing personal against DMS of course. I’m sure he is a good guy. I just can’t take a reviewer seriously when they constantly go back and forth on what is good or bad every other video, unlike you. But this is why I like your reviews and thoughts on things. You stick to what you say. And you keep it far more real than many others. A lot of reviewers have way too much to say about things and they try to add too much fluff to something that is very simple they don’t realize how often they contradict themselves in a single video let alone from one to the next.
Hi josh i play on ps5 what would be better for gaming these sennheiser 490 pro. or the 660s2 which ones would you pick that would sound the best im currently using the focal elex thanks
Only thing better than 560s I found was the comfort and maybe a little more separation between sounds. The treble response makes these sound dull most of the time which is unfortunate. I agree though these should be no more than $300.
I love the comfort of the HD560s over my HD600 so I always choose them over the 600s when I’m at my desk. I was looking to upgrade to this but doesn’t seem like the upgrade is worth considering it’s not “significantly” better :(
I splurged quite far past my target budget to get this headphone, thinking I might get the perfect headphone for me. Loved the fit and the sound. But for me it was quite uncomfortable because my ears touched rough surface inside the cups, probably the letters. This caused some friction the tips of my ears. Definitely an Achilles' heel for me. If only the inside was something smooth. I did try to mod this with some silk but that left just significantly less space for the ears in general. I had to return them because of that and kept the HD 560S. I also figured it might be significantly cheaper down the road. I might still get it then if there would be a way around that inside of the headphone.
A comparison to the Neumann-NDH-30 would be cool. This headphone are made by a company also owned by Sennheiser Pro (which is different from Sennheiser Consumer, that belongs to Sonova) and uses the same drivers, the ones in the 560S and 490 Pro.
Are headphones like this just for music production or do they even sound better by hearing music on SoundCloud? Is the 256kbps audio quality a more bottleneck that this headphones doesn’t sound better than z.B. the Momentum 4 Wireless?
Can you do an updated video on headphone pads? It was 3-5 yrs ago. I got the hd490 from your reviews but the depth is hurting my ears, how can i find 3rd party deeper pads for something so new?
Thanks for being brutally honest with your opinion, I almost bought this, but the reviews I saw were not straight to the point, they didn't compare to anything and the DEAL BREAKER was the price, now that you the bass is not wow and lose etc, which i need bass but clean, am very happy i went with SRH 840A excellent with bass mid and crisp highs, a little brighter but it's okay not clean, reveals things better, i can use it, corrected or as is, it took me forever to choose the shure, it's a pity mist reviewers don't really give us the reality picture. I mix and.master, I need clearly see what is going on in bass frequency hiphop edm and everything. These companies are not serious about making a headphone for mixing, the HD most mixing great headphones were discovered by the end users and others started buying them, now they call this 490 pro HD for mixing. Well thankx
Again I'll voice my concerns about the headband, plastic/metal hybrids in that fashion such as the Focal Elegia's (and other Focal products) headband is notorious for being a point of failure.
I’m guessing they can’t make a 600 with better bass extension without changing the character of the headphone, or introducing an unacceptable level of distortion. maybe they would have better success if they tried making a planar😊
I was able to EQ much better bass on my HD600 without distortion. It's possible but you have to cut rather than adding and this will impact volume especially without an amp.
@@kosmonument2682 I have a fiio e12 portable amp with a bass boost toggle that makes the HD 600 sound like what people are asking for, I almost forgot to mention that
Oh man I’m dipping my toes into the audiophile world for the first time and have these on the way to me over the 660s2. Now I’m starting to wonder if I made the wrong decision!
I found myself in similar situations when I first started. Sometimes you just have to jump in and go for it. If you get them on Amazon you can return them if you don't like them. If you aren't in a position to listen to both, maybe get both and return the one you don't want? The area that I'm in doesn't have a lot of places to listen to headphones, so Amazon has saved me a few headaches and it was worth paying a little extra for the ability to return. That's just what has worked for me, so far. Good luck with your choice! 🙂👍
You did not. This could easily be a 600 dollar headphone, is also comparable to the Neumann NDH 30(also owned by Sennheiser) literally twins at this point.
Nah man I just got these and they're my go to headphone now. Easily my favorite out of the dozens I've owned in the past. Mainly for comfort and not having to EQ
I own both the HD 560S and HD 490 Pro headphones. In my opinion, the HD 490 Pro is essentially an improved, professional version of the HD 560S. Personally, I believe the name 'HD 560 Pro' would be more appropriate for this headphones.
I would absolutely never mix on DT1990Pro without seriously eq on them. Yikes. Mixing on Sennheiser 600 without eq more reliable than anything else to me. Check mix on something with bass. Job done.
At the sub £500 mark, I haven’t heard a dynamic that can compete with my Edition XS (or my Sundaras with iFi bass enhancement) for bass control and impact. Just my preference, obviously.
I have the HD650 and the HD660, and the drivers in one earcup have developed a connection issue with both. From what I've discovered online, the 600 series use a hair-thin wire connecting the drivers, which breaks easily. As a result of my issue, I've been turned off from Sennheiser 600 headphones. BTW, I also own the Hd800, and have not experienced this issue Has anyone else experienced this connection issue with the 600 series. Also, does anyone know if Sennheiser has since acknowledged and addressed this issue (eg, using a more rebust, reliable connecting wire)? I've had my headphones for some years; I purchased the HD660 when they were first released. Or have I misdiagnosed the problem with my cans?
Both pads are included with the PRO Plus and the non Plus.
Noted! Thanks!

Yesss Good request
Well zeos loves his ndh but he isn't q serious reviewer 😂
I got my dt 1990 for 430€
The 1990s absolutely do not require a powerful amp to drive.
@@Neonmirrorblacktrue, but if you dont buy a good dac you are barely getting its full potential
Sennheiser has this unique sound that makes me happy there are other headphone manufacturers.
What do you think of these compared to the DT900 Pro X?
Voshua Jalour
very cool 👍
I will be mixing vocals.. rap vocals, indie, r&b Maybe the hd600 is the way to go for me.
@@elzycollins Not maybe , sure 600 are the way to go, amazing for vocals.
This whole "hobby" would die if people understood this lol.
@@Terra101lmaooo 💀 shhhh. No one needs to know

Don't forget that the package includes a license for the dearVR MIX-SE plugin for $99. The only question is whether it is necessary.
I ordered these, I hope they don’t disappoint me.)
You like them?
Your videos are absolutely the best. It’s like you have 150 people behind the camera….writing, producing, filming, editing and so on.
Good TV quality and way above what’s going on RUclips.
A close second, but quite far is MKBHD.
These headphones are primarily for mixing and mastering and should be reviewed for this use case. I find the HD 490s excel in the studio setting where you are looking for a good level of neutrality and faithfulness. They are great for long sessions due to their high level of comfort.
How are the Vs Sony MDR MV1?
There’s not one Sen anymore. This hp comes from the original company now dealing only in the Pro space. The 560, HD600 series, HD800 and all the rest of the consumer products have been bought. So there is no point wondering why Sen brought out these when they already have the others. The answer is they don’t.
Absolutely correct!
For competitive gaming where do these rank under the Sennheiser lineup?
Second best after the HD 800S.
I got the 560S, Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X and the 490 Pro is my favorite. Best imaging and comfort.
Is this good for gaming ? I currently run the 599
Yes
It is nowhere near 8/10. it just isn't. Super comfy though.
This or the Sony MDR MV1?
Josh speaking of comfort you should definitely review the Sivga Luan which is priced around 350-400 💲, I am really curious to hear your opinion on these.
Yes
I really want to see the comparsion between this one and Sony MV1
Great review. Would be great if you could make a review of the Neumann ndh 30.
Good to know. Although the fact that you rate the Beyer DT1990 favourably is puzzling.
I thought the DT1990 was one of the most fatiguing headphones I've heard.
Couldn't hear it for longer than 3 mins.
One of the detailed headphones after breaking in
@@LukasBlau If you are referring to the DT1990 then I don’t agree.
I found it very harsh.
Despite burning in for more than 96 hours!
The sense of newfound detail is superseded by fatigue.
nice review, was waiting for this. impressive headphones for this price. enjoy your time as a new dad!
TBH the 490 are the most comfy headphones i have ever worn
Hi Josh, I'm really enjoying your review, but could you please reduce the sibilance in the audio a bit? Thank you.
Thxs for the review. How does it EQs?
Tengo los HD-660S2, vale la pena invertir en esto HD490 Pro si es que quisiera subir de nivel auditivo? Gracias por tu respuesta. Saludos desde México.
How does this compare to the HD 800S? I am looking for something that's more appropriate for gaming, and more fun when listening to music.
Is this worth getting if you already got a HD650 with Dekoni pads and custom cables
No.
Josh if I remember correctly, you really liked the IE600 (and loved the IE900). Which of all these Sennheiser headphones are the closest in sound signature and that excellent detail retrieval to you?
Would you say these are more or less comfortable than the hd800s?
I believe you since josh is uncredible
I would agree with you! Luckily, I don't have the ear fabric touching issue myself. I feel like the mixing pads are a little underrated/overlooked by reviewers, which is a real shame. Make bass transients feel tighter too.
How is the Sennheiser HD490 Pro for gaming compared to the DT 1990 pro.
The headphone output impedance of the Scarlett 2i2 4th gen is 50 ohms meaning you’re not getting an accurate sound with the 37 ohms of the 490 pros
joshua, u said that at 300 (400 but now its at 300) dollars the sounstaging is adequate ], for you which soundstages better than this at that price point
Note dont sell 560s buy closed back headphones with good v shape like Shure 840 or sony mdr because open back good at something also closed back one.
Get closed back ones. I use Momentum 3 primarily for heavy base music while on the go (dnb, dubstep) and they are incredibly satisfying.
For comparison - at home I use 660S. Great for gaming and podcasts, terrible for EDM.
@@GoodDay2Smoke that nice and yes open back headphones doesn't have advantage in bass region.
@@GoodDay2SmokeUnfortunately I can't stand closed backs for gaming. I miss the sound stage and imaging so I'm more willing to sacrifice bass for that.

That pretty sick considering it's a song with only 4K plays :D
Seems amazing, a good step up from my first audiophile headphones the SHP9600’s.
I wonder how this compares to my current HD 58X
I think there will be a few of us with the same thought - I think price to performance of the 58x is unbeatable.
The production quality of your videos is good, but I feel like there could be some benefit to you introducing your headphones a bit better. Esp in sens where the model number doesn't always indicate it's intended purpose/target audience/competitors so we know what to compare them to.
I like the HD660S and original HD800 most.
I'm might be interested in the HD490, does it take to EQ well, not heavy handed EQ just some slight tweaks.
Having tested it with EQAPO, I'd say yes! Nothing radical would be needed anyway, judging by how they measure and sound.
@@Protonaut Oh excellent, thank you for that, much appreciated, I was wondering if there would be any distortion given they're a dynamic driver headphone with some minimal EQ adjustments if I needed to tweak the sound slightly more to my tastes.
Its certainly tempting but at that price I'll still rec the DT900 Pro X to my friends that want an audiophile / gaming set.
Easily. This is a professional product costing twice as much as it should for a consumer.
I have the 900 Pro X ... upgrading from this is ... complicated :) I know that these are better for gaming, but not in a way that is worth almost the double of the price.
Thank you for the review, nice lighting by the way, your sound of course is tops as usual.
Beyerdynamic dt1990 pro and hd490 pro which headphones with the same configuration has better sound details?
Thank you.
Alright, I have to ask: this or the Hifiman Edition XS for just music listening 🤔
My thoughts exactly. Had my XS's for a couple weeks now, and I couldn't imagine going with anything else. Especially considering they were $280 refurbs in brand new condition from HiFiman.

Thanks for the review! Hope you can get your hands on the Aune AR5000. $300 and some reviews compare them quite well to the HD600.
Great review man 👊 made it easier for me to decide which model to aim for next time!
Hi josh i play on ps5 what would be better for gaming these sennheiser 490 pro. or the 660s2 which ones would you pick that would sound the best im currently using the focal elex thanks
Quick comparison between these and the Edition XS (imaging, bass, soundstage, etc
diana mr or empyrean 2?
I think some of the price includes sennheiser's mixing plugins included if I'm not mistaken.
@JoshuaValour will the hd490 sound good with a budget amp/dac like the smls c200 or do they need a high end source to sound good?
Well thankx
Josh, I guess you now influenced my purchasing decision. It is currently available for €349.- (PRO version) here in Germany. Seems fair.
So it sounds like an HD599 but with a different physical design then?
How do these compare to the 58x's?
Coming from the 560s I love this headset on just comfort alone
Where do you get the music in your videos from? I really like some of it.

The long awaited review

Now if only they would release a consumer version of this at a lower price point, similiar to HD400 Pro vs 560S

I own both 560s and 600, and switches them often. I think I got a free 490 pro.
So basically it's a 560S reshelled, which itself is a 58x retuned and reshelled. Cool 😂
8 in all areas, sounds like a win to me
I would absolutely never mix on DT1990Pro without seriously eq on them. Yikes.
Mixing on Sennheiser 600 without eq more reliable than anything else to me. Check mix on something with bass. Job done.
is this better than the Audeze maxwell??
anything is better than wireless
I am definitely getting them soooon. :)
The headphones are great and all that........but what glasses are those sir? lol
BTW, I also own the Hd800, and have not experienced this issue
Has anyone else experienced this connection issue with the 600 series. Also, does anyone know if Sennheiser has since acknowledged and addressed this issue (eg, using a more rebust, reliable connecting wire)? I've had my headphones for some years; I purchased the HD660 when they were first released.
Or have I misdiagnosed the problem with my cans?
