Played this game a lot as a kid. I put hundreds of hours learning all the ticks in this game. Every secret, every unlockable, and every character quirk. I know each level inside and out, so trust me when I say that I know what I’m talking about. Getting all the stamps unlocks a Glock for Frogger
I've played and completed this half a year ago and i'm pretty sure what you actually get is an ability-hat where you can infinitely use the rocket item. I don't know anything about a glock.
"Do you know what it's like? Every waking moment of my life, having a father dedicate himself to millions of children around the world, and never once looking you in the eye? Every day, he goes into work and designs toys, he signs merchandising deals, he does photoshoots and interviews and meet-and-greets, but does he have time for his own flesh and blood? No. Of course not. One person is nothing more than another smiling face in the sea of the consumer populace, not even if it's your son. I have lived with that my entire life...so, tell me. What did you want to wish for? If you exposed me in front of everyone, the least you could do me in return is to give me one last laugh before the end. So, speak, boy. Tell me what it is you want." "I wanted your dad to be my dad, 'cause he's rich and cool." "...Did...Did you not...Huh?"
If it were my choice, i'd have the wish at the end of the game to tell Tobi to spend more time with his son. It seems they were trying to have the main character choose a really noble and heartfelt option by saying to keep frogger, but like, that implies that everyone's going to lose their pets so that's kinda upsetting. Telling tobi to spend more time with his kid would be more noble I feel and get across a more heartfelt ending, even if it feels contrived, let's admit, this game's writing isn't really that much to write home about.
You know what a BETTER wish to shwo how selfless and noble the protag is? have him wish for Tobi to grant EVERYONE'S wishes. Also Tobi would look like such an asshole if he needs a kid to straight up wish for him to spend time with his son.
I have this game, and although I don't enjoy it quite as much as Helmet Chaos, it did have a a lot of potential. Too bad the title and box art made it look like a "baby's first game", as it is actually quite challenging.
As for the stamps, collecting a full set will give you a new costume- if I remember, the Santa costume let's you get the coin bonus from 4 coins instead of 8, you can also get a bunny costume that gives you a speedy hop ability. There is also the rocket costume, that shoots you forward by pressing Y
prior to this run of videos I would also have said I didn't care about frogger, but these videos have honestly made me feel like I'm a fan even if I haven't played any of them past the arcade original lol
Btw, for DS minigames that require blowing into the mic, the easiest way to beat em is to turn on an A/C and put the mic directly up to the air current. It's LITERALLY the only way I beat that one Train Boss from BiS.
Incase it hasn't been mentioned yet. "808" is the area code for Hawaii. Which also has numerous military bases on it. It could be some sort of reference to that.
This is such a weird looking game. It's like Konami saw what Capcom was doing with Megaman at the time with it's handheld games where the Megaman characters were converted into digital pets for original human characters and thought "We should do that with Frogger!"
Yeah in BN it worked also because they not only added some familar characters in new roles but they made up new characters SPECIFICALLY for that continuity which gave it its own unique feel. Here it feels like the REAL human part of the game is just slowing you down from reaching the frogger stages without actually giving you a valid enough reason for it to exist.
@@guntherhermann4225 Same here, though mainly for me if was more about the competition arc as it briefly made me think of the Battle Network 4, AKA the games where it's an entire f**king Tournament Arcs.
Now I’m just imagining a Frogger SRPG, or just the turn based strategy like Advance Wars. I don’t know, I just liked the idea of shoving Frogger into some weird new genre (or vice versa), and you’ve already got the grid.
Never thought I'd see a day where a game had a touch screen mechanic that was more comfortable for us lefties than righties, even if it was unintentional.
The afro costume is such a weird addition it makes me wonder if this was some re-worked Sergeant Frog game that Konami lost the license to. Afros are a meme in that series.
I'm really surprised about this game. When you made that last review years ago, I thought My Frogger was just going to be an arcade type of game, just a bunch of Frogger levels stick up together in a cheap way I never wanted to spoiled myself in case you made a review, and I'm very impressed. I guess you were right with that line, "never judge a book by it's cover"
I swear I had just watched the Frogger helmet chaos video again and thought to myself "oh man when will My Frogger Toy Trial finally come, it's been 2 years" and suddenly it's magical there tf
Cool to see a review of this one. So strange that they decided to give Frogger of all things to give the plot of a children’s anime. I think of all the Frogger games you played, Helmet Chaos looks the most fun still, but it’s cool to see their stranger takes on the series.
OK I thought the reveal was gonna be "I wish for all my friend's wishes to come true" but the actual reveal was even dumber - like Frinky LITERALLY just heard Tobi Jr talking about how much his dad sucks and Frinky is like ":) cool"
You wouldn't think a simple puzzle game like Frogger would have such a varied franchise like this. A varied franchise that somehow sticks to the same overall gameplay idea in every entry. Minus one, but we don't talk about that one.
It's funny how this is seemingly the most obscure Frogger game and yet the box art seems strangely the most familiar to me. You seemed to have had quite a bit of fun with this game and with this review, particularly with the DS touch screen malarkey section and the silly ending section. 2:12 - I did not expect to hear Spectrobes, Custom Robo or Medabots mentioned within the same video... let alone a Frogger video. 5:36 - Okay, already adore the story to this game. It's also hilarious to see a "human" section to this review of a Frogger game.
It's really cool to see a game with very little info online (one that would be easily glossed over too) given a review, and a cool return to the review series on the channel. Also this review had me howling at the dumb stuff here like the wish. I was so prepared for it to be the corny "Oh I wish Tobi would spend more time with his son" resolution but saying your wish is "I want your dad lmao" _right after hearing Tobi Jr.'s story_ is utterly deranged and just caught me completely off guard, and it's just kind of insane to see.
23:28 - (ending spoilers) Imagine being that kid's actual father, and later hearing that he would've replaced you in a heartbeat. Beyond that, that is very much a wish that Tobi could fulfill, if he wasn't a coward.
That Frogger portrait is by far the cutest of them all for sure. I really like this design. Judging from this review this OOZES gimmicky NDS game. I defossilized enough Spectrobes to know how annoying the mic can be (I always just whistle into it). The DS had so many decent games that just ended up being more annoying because of forced gimmicks. Really glad that second screen eventually became a UI enhancement more than anything.
Omg seeing Spectrobes again is so weird. Also I will miss Dr. Wani. RIP. But also the direction for this title and mix and match of the movesets, as well as the rebooted stuff and split game quality and what I would assume are glitches or oversights with the checkpoints not working is all very interesting if nothing else. Helmet Chaos seems to most fun in my head, because despite all of the previous game flips the series had, it did seem like the direction was getting on track, and the characters I was warming up to even just watching your videos on the series. It wasn't short of very strange, upsetting, or frustrating bumps in the road, but I will say that it all was kind of worth seeing Frogger, Lumpy, Dr. Wani, and everyone else from that era sort of stick around a bit, even if the plots, gameplay, and details were on randomize.
I was super pleased on rewatching that I saw Lily, Lumpy (Agent L), Berry and Blue during this review. Can't say I saw Dr. Wani, but I might've missed him.
I’m actually glad that you put the story spoilers even in a game like this. While it may be stupid or childish I’m always interested in knowing how a story ends in games that I’m not going to play, so thank you for that!
This has been one of my favorite reviews you've done yet. I can really feel the humor and the style that you've had previously elevated even more! Nice work!
Gonna be honest, saw the title of "My Frogger Toy Trials" I wrote this off. Like I was expecting a complete kiddy game. But damn, was this a unexpected left hook. It's like shoving something called "Babies" and then it's a Neon White clone. LIKE WHAT?
NR really kinda glazed over how incarnations of Lily and Lumpy *and* Berry were featured in this game. If I never watched these videos and someone told me about how Konami rebooted Frogger 16 times, I wouldn't be going "Oh, well, it's probably safe to assume that they included Frogger's iconic supporting cast in this new version~" Actually, I wouldn't even realize these games _had_ supporting casts.
Now that I think about it, isn't it kind of weird that four of the Toy Pets in the story are frogs/toads? Like, Frinky was gunning for a dragon but got a frog instead; meanwhile, a plural number of people mailed in for 🐸, on purpose? They made a dent in the plot's integrity for the sake of maintaining the heritage of these froggy friends introduced over the course of multiple realities... How inspiring.
Now I know mostly all the frogger series thanks to you. Idk what to do with this information but at least I have new talking points to bring up with people lol
Elite Beat Agents is really good. And for everyone don't know: it was made for the west exclusivly, because in Japan it's called Osu Tatakae Ouendan with total different songs and Stories.
"I would've asked for every BIONICLE." Right there with you, Mr. Rad. Also, I remember having this game as a kid. It wasn't really mine, it was one of a few DS games that our dad got us to share, but I could never make it past the first few levels, and I have no idea where it ended up.
thank you for violently reminding me about spectrobs, i saw the game play on screen and didnt know why i had a wave of fondness come over me untill i saw the box art and realized despite not remembering a THING about it i adored that game growing up. now i want to revisit it...
This looks to be the game where they really wanted to make Frogger a bit more complex in terms of lore and whatnot, but honestly, Frogger never really needed a deep story, but credit where credit is due with the developers trying something different. But DS games with forced touch screen and microphone controls? The early days of the DS, it were a weird time.
The audio starts sounding a bit odd around the 28:30 mark almost thought it could be a hint towards the Halloween season but it just kinda looks like an error while recording on the camera.
I thought it was pretty cool to randomly see another Frogger review of yours pop up yeah! This one I looked up on Wikipedia and saw nothing abt a story so having an in depth plot like that was surprising.
I have this cartridge for over 10 years now. I don't think I ever got past the intro if I played it at all. Thanks for the video nitro rad. Your pacman and frogger videos made me a fan
The toy pets are like the Net Navis from Mega Man Battle Network. In that series, instead of being robots, Mega Man and co. are programs with human users. Like MegaMan has Lan as his user, Roll has Mayl, ProtoMan has Chaud, and so on and so forth. Seems like something similar is going on with this game. Frogger is the player's toy pet while other characters from past titles are the pets of other characters.
Just when you think the Frogger marathon was over, you manage to unearth another forgotten Frogger game! So weird to wish you get the dad who has been neglecting his original son
The first console I owned was the DS (given to me on my birthday) and my first two games funny enough were My Frogger Toy Trials and MySims. Oddly enough I was also relistening the MySims Kingdom DS's soundtrack earlier today and contemplating replaying those games, so I howled when you mentioned the series. Lots of weird coincidences going on today.
Hi Nitro I just wanted to say that I care about you very much, your personality is awesome! If something is hoing wrong in your life I want you to know that you deserve all the help and all the best
This feels like a case of the Japanese version simply having pets/animals that fight, but the localisation team was like HELL NO and rewrote everything as a "toy". (This also holds up if you consider that Tobi Jr.'s pet is literally a robot, because he was spiteful over the other kids having real animals, and I guess had to make one himself, idk.)
Even if the game was made in Hawaii, its possible there was input from Japan, going so far as the original script that was altered. maybe it was scrapped in japan and thrown to them? maybe it was just an internal script change. i have no idea. it just doesn't fit what the game actually is though, like many old localisations ive seen.
17:30 I hear the Tensuns theme from Starshot!!! Thank you so much for reviewing that game for me, James. It's a clunky mess but it's a clunky mess that I love. It means a lot to me.
This one feels so surreal, it 100% looks inspired by countless games that could only exist in that time period, of which I played many, but never did I imagine there was a Frogger game within that same genre.
i loved the frogger marathon and especially this one cuz it was like the only frogger game i ever owned as a kid it's awesome to see a youtuber cover it :) good video
Since you mentioned the mic peaking for the second minigame involving it, I want point out for anyone wanting to try this that rubbing area around or ontop of the microphone works too. I figured this trick out on 2DS while playing Fossil Fighters, as the fossil cleaning minigame requires you to blow away dust as you clean. It's a little finicky at times though and I'm not sure how it may stack up on other DS/3DS models.

I have rewatched your frogger videos probably like 5 times each, I love them and I'm so glad you're still going
Just when you think the Frogger marathon was over, you manage to unearth another forgotten Frogger game! So weird to wish you get the dad who has been neglecting his original son
I've actually been waiting this video for 2 years
The first console I owned was the DS (given to me on my birthday) and my first two games funny enough were My Frogger Toy Trials and MySims. Oddly enough I was also relistening the MySims Kingdom DS's soundtrack earlier today and contemplating replaying those games, so I howled when you mentioned the series. Lots of weird coincidences going on today.
Wasn't expecting the Custom Robo comparisons for Frogger of all games. It's been a while since I last played that game.
Hi Nitro I just wanted to say that I care about you very much, your personality is awesome! If something is hoing wrong in your life I want you to know that you deserve all the help and all the best
Thank you for being the #1 investigative journalist source on the controversial yet beloved frogger saga
So I’m pretty sure Area 808 is a bit of a nod to Hawaii’s area code. That’s kind of a cute little nod to the devs home state.
Recently watched your Frogger playlist. Been wondering when you would do this game
24:34 "I woulda asked for every Bionicle"
BIG MOOD
This feels like a case of the Japanese version simply having pets/animals that fight, but the localisation team was like HELL NO and rewrote everything as a "toy".
(This also holds up if you consider that Tobi Jr.'s pet is literally a robot, because he was spiteful over the other kids having real animals, and I guess had to make one himself, idk.)
There is no Japanese version.
The review was Kylefrickin awesome!
I had just finished rewatching the Frogger marathon, and I couldn’t quite believe it when I saw this in my feed. Awesome!
Dude, your video just made my day! So chillaxing seeing a guy just wanna make a froggy video
I swear whenever I binge a lot of nitro rad for a couple of days a new video just comes out of no where
Finally you did this video about the frogger retrospective. I was waiting for it when you decided to stop that.
Thank you.
No Brady or Alex feature for the multiplayer segment, very sad :( Great video overall though, really enjoyed it!
i loved the frogger marathon and especially this one cuz it was like the only frogger game i ever owned as a kid it's awesome to see a youtuber cover it :) good video
YES! I got this game for Christmas with my DS. It's the only Frogger game I've owned, so THANK YOU for bringing it to light!
i did not expect this being decent, and froggy is a cute lil toy baby.
Nice work, as per usual, Nitro Rad! Also got the best studio background in the game
Props to James for fully committing to the game's cornball intro, I laughed pretty hard at that.
THE RETURN OF FRINKY HAS COME
I found your frogger videos this winter and I have been really hoping for this one!!
"And that's the credits... I would've asked for every Bionicle."
Mood James. MOOD!
The frog is back
The frog is ba-a-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@@marxxplaysgames YOU STOLE THE JOKE I WAS GOING TO MAKE!!!!
One could say that Frogger Returns
