Some good help.. thanks! I do 7500 steps at 6AM to beat the heat. But I have a real issue with looking down. I have osteoporosis snd am really fearful of tripping on any road cracks, pebbles, sand etc. The roads are narrow do I have to watch for safe places to step off the road..all this leads to the head tip down. I will try to look more forward..I hope this works on this bad habit! I find if I use my weighted vest I feel even more frightened of tripping..do I do it less, which is aggravating. I live in the country and, regardless of what you hear, there is no kindness or understanding of my walking in the road by the drivers in their trucks and cars.. they seldom even slow down! I must be prepared and stepping off on to uneven, rocky soil is unnerving. I am 76 and active..but trepidation makes me a danger to myself!🙄
I'd suggest you listen to a Flipping 50 podcast released Tuesday. www.flippingfifty.com/podcast (or anywhere you get podcasts) ... the Benefits of walking was covered and research on duration, steps, intensity.. depends greatly on your goal and reason for walking
Love your videos. Line up very well with the advise I've been getting from my naturopathic this past year. One of these days I'm going to completely jump on board with you. I've exercised all my life. Definitely made mistake of pushing too hard through the onset of menopause that started around 52. I'm now 63 and have had a hard time relearning what's going to be the most benefit for me. Have always loved walking. Thanks so much for putting yourself out here for the benefit of others.🙌 The whole menopause trip is quite a ride and no one understands until they get here. But, there's only 2 choices we either get to go through it, or we're no longer here to experience it. Life is a gift no matter what stage. 💝
@@Flipping50TV part of what's holding me back is I get frustrated with technology and don't like the idea of having to find my way around to access whatever you'll offer. Probably sounds silly. I was going to do the labor day 5 day jump start but just as you shared I had my reason of bad timing. Anyway, I hope I do jump soon.
I love the walking and do quite a bit of it at work. I walk anywhere from 3 to 5 miles a day at work in the operating room. I am a nurse, plus lifting patients, beds, all types of equipment (some very heavy). I also walk on the treadmill at the gym 30 minutes before I do the weights. I am in process of of losing weight but more importantly getting healthy and toning up. The days after I do weights, I let my muscles rest and just walk on the treadmill, if not on call and don't have to stay late at work. I have a right lower hamstring injury that is a dull pain, chronic tendonitis basically. Do you think a brace would hender the proper walking abilities?
No, it's not going to hinder the walking necessarily... but what you don't want it to do is give you false sense of security if you should be resting to heal it. If there's pain and you mask it, you could be prolonging it. Have you had it diagnosed or are you self-diagnosing? ITIS is a chronic issue. Rest and ice... and ideally you get to the root cause of why you got it. Is there an imbalance somewhere that caused it.. and fix that.
@@Flipping50TV Hahaha you know how us nurses roll like self diagnosing. Actually I have had 2 tenotomies on that area to rid of calcium build up behind my tendon area close to where it attaches. I was in a boot for 6 months due to a small tear. The tenotomies basically have given me about 5 years before I have to go in for open surgery to scrape and clean out all around that area and take some fiberwire and strengthen the tendon. I will be off that foot for at least 6 months. I want to loose 30 more pounds and tone up more before then. 30 years of nursing has done this to my feet. Thank you for answering. It has been bothering me a little more again. I may not be waiting so long before the major surgery on it.
10-15 minutes after each mean (within about 30 minutes) is recommended if your purpose is improving blood sugar. You'll find 2-3 podcasts at flippingfifty.com/podcasts (or wherever you get podcasts) that will help you understand the walking you want for the goal you have
@@Flipping50TV Hi Debra, I forgot to ask you at what pace should I walk the 15mn walk after a meal to improve blood sugar? Thank you again!!! couldnt find it on the podcast
Yes you can! however, you'll lose a mixture of fat and muscle unless you're lifting weights to maintain muscle, and that will ultimately slow metabolism!
Hi there dear. I'm a new subscriber and nearing 56 years of age. I currently weigh 249 lbs and my physiotherapist let me borrow a set of urban poles. Along with making some simple changes in my food, would they help me lose weight?
They certainly could if they make you want to walk more! Find something you enjoy that you’ll do regularly. Start small!! Done snd consistent trump perfect! There’s an interview here with glucose goddess that also might help. Walking after meals 10 minutes each can help get you started!
Looking spectacular, Debra. I’ve followed you since I started menopause 6 years ago. I’ve a request that I’d hope you consider. Everything looks great considering your age. Would you show us what your abs look like? Regards
I'm laughing! I'll think about it! Do you know why I don't? It's really a brand and business decision. We don't. We don't do before and after pictures. We aren't that. We don't want to play. We don't want other women comparing themselves to each other or anyone else .. even younger them. So.. we keep our clothes on and we are highly functional demonstrating what strong abs do instead of suggesting that i have to show them to you.

Finally, excellent tutorial. Helpful info without talking about so many things. I love it. Thank you. I plan to begin walking shortly

What should I track with walking? Steps, distance or time?

That is fantastic, Debra. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Is zone 1 walking speed good for reducing cortisol and belly fat? Hypothyroidism limits my energy but also caused weight gain.

@@tabithasrinivasan5980 Thank you so much
Thank you for this. I feel inspired and this is helpful in terms of the details you show here.
Fabulous!!!
Is it ok to use light (1lb) hand weights when walking? Does that give us benefits and arm toning while walking? thank you! Great video!
No. Risky to elbows shoulders, no real benefits and most women tighten up neck and upper back where they already carry tension.
how long after a meal should we walk for insulin resistance?

@@Flipping50TV wonderful. Thank you very much.
The tan or the muscles. Not sure which is better.
If we love exercise but don't like "walking" per se, what about that?
The best question is... what do you love that you can do every day that is = to walking. The point isn't really "walking" its moving!

Should I be making a point to be squeezing my glutes with each step?
No
That would be awkward! No! Push off with your rear foot though.
