For y’all who’s not Japanese, the host doubts if hiromi can play any song out theme that’s unheard of/simply any song. The host hums for a short while, and that beast played it out. Turns out “my way” is just another Frank Sinatra song that hiromi must have heard of; even if not, the chords are typical changes. But the improvisation is outta this world and she’s my idol❤ went all the way from Hong Kong to Paris to watch her❤
5係wor. The host was asking Hiromi to improvise the theme song of the show, which is "My way" from Frank Sinatra. But Hiromi couldnt remember the whole song, and they hummed the melody for her, and Hiromi caught the melody and improvised for them. So the host was joking that he helped Hiromi to improvise the song.
I'm a grown man and I gladly admit that Hiromi's other-worldly talent matched with her immense passion behind the piano has reduced me to tears on many an occasion.
:D Fellow musician. I wanna get better at the piano. I've played a little, and got my first-ever midi keyboard, Japanese too, Akai, MPK3 Mini, best seller of mini keyboards, in recent months. Growing up, I played a lot of clarinet, trumpet, sax, bongos and congos, steel drums, etc. :3 Very inspiring! Beautiful Asian lady! Super skilled and great energy! :3 🎹✊🔥🔥💯💯Arigato!
Being a jazz pianist (and any other instrument really) isn't only about being skilled at the instrument, you also have to excel in music theory and feel the music.
Well, she's almost 44 now. :-) I had the great pleasure of seeing her live, shortly after the start of the boom in her career, in a tiny venue on the coast south of San Francisco - maybe 100 people, mostly older, just wanting to see a "jazz concert". This was 2007 and she was in the early part of the "Time Control" tour. No small number left at intermission because there was an electric guitar, and they probably were not expecting such hard-hitting fusion. But, man, that group was incredible.
I always love, not just listening to Hiromi Uehara's piano playing but even just Watching how she gets so Raptured as she plays! She's such a joy to watch! The piano is truly an extention of her very soul.
Thank you for this comment. I never heard of her or the other two and you just took me down a rabbit hole that is mind blowing. The Trio Project. Wow. Bravo!
They have only seen a fraction of her power. Anyways, I've had the pleasure of seeing her perform live at the Meridian Centre in Toronto, Canada, back in November. Absolutely legendary.
She has tremendous skill and must certainly know how good she is - and yet she remains very modest. In addition to her obvious technical ability, I particularly appreciate her taste. It's exciting how you can tell from her face when she's completely immersed in her music here. The “Ay” close before the end is also very cuddly.
Interesting, I'm a classical musician and I don't really enjoy jazz, but her tone is something that resembles me of Glenn Gould's Bach, and I love it. She has insane control over her sound.
yes, her tone is simply perfect. kind of every time in, i guess, every concert. she played lots of classic stuff when she was young, but she went to berklee^^ she s technically perfect. a rarity in jazzpiano, definately.

Damn the way everyone shuts up after she gets into her groove… even as a third person viewing a video, I had to take a moment to just watch the artistry flowing out of her. Can’t imagine what it must’ve been like being next to that
A few years ago, Hiromi played at a small restaurant in North Carolina. (I have no idea why.) Our table was right next to her piano. I could reach over and touch it! Now that's what I call a front row seat. Fantastic evening and she even had her photo taken with me when I bought a couple CDs. Lovely lady and a truly gifted musician and composer.
I saw Hiromi twice with "The Trio Project" which were two of the best concerts that I've ever attended. I'd describe her as a cross between Vladimir Horowitz, McCoy Tyner, and Jerry Lee Lewis!

I think she's playing a super jazzy version of a french song called "Comme d'Habitude" (meaning "As usual") from Claude François and Jacques Revaux. (and not "My Way" as a lot of you are saying ^^ "My Way" is the american "cover")
never heard of her, and with eyes closed it sounds great. but seeing her, a japanese woman, get down and dirty with her body swaying around the keys, shoulders moving back and forth...what a sight. I'm so used to seeing Japanese musicians playing with stiffness or uncanny smiles. love the transcription too. Great way ti learn how to make simple changes into something more beautiful. 😮
That was truly amazing awesome I'm glad that I saw it with my own eyes. She's Absolutely talented. A Diamond in the rough. But there's another the two should meet.

I see Hiromi once, and after the show she walked past me to get to the autograph table. I was surprised at how small she is. She’s a tiny lady but also a prophet of music and must be protected at all costs.
@Karl with a K maybe, what OP meant is......... when you see a performer (not only musician), you feel his/her aura, his/her presence, and an amazing performer has great aura you just sink in his/her performance. So, when you see that performer *not* in performance stage, sometimes it surprised you that s/he is smaller than you thought when s/he was on stage. I hear a LOT of Oscar, especially with the light touch.
