If you use overlord mode on your summoner, you'll be able to build minions across the map much faster (more for campaign maps than survival), and you can flash heal anywhere on the map without running around if you need to get there quickly
I think the most useful thing you could do with the jester at the moment is to use as an upgrader, youll wanna dump everything into cast rate, BUT, you definitely want some ability 2 on the side, the wheel ability is disgustingly broken, its most notable use is rolling 3 swords, which does a %dmg to every enemy on the map, capping at 50% hp at 3726 ability 2, but yeah cast rate is the main thing with a genie pet and an upgrader weapon, which rn if you do halloween spooktacular on at least hard, you will unlock whats called a lupine bow as a core drop on all maps, theres a couple variants of names for it like wolfhunters bow or something, but you want lupine specifically as it has base dmg (electric) and one extra element of dmg (needs to not be electric) so that way you can still get mana from electric immune mobs, btw this bow shoots really fast projectiles that go through walls which is why its used for gathering mana via a genie pet on a jester, i will elaborate on all of this further if the time for it comes as its a little confusing and theres some important details to know
you can use the jester in many different ways, however the three main ideas is to go either a dps hero with ranged weapons, an upgrader with cast speed and genie pet + "upgrader weapon" or just a jester to use the wheel ability. Your best bet is probably going hald dps and half upgrader. :) i can add some info on those weapons if you want to know.
Pat! If you struggle wave 1-3 on survival, try starting your survivals on wave 10 or so, you get a ton of mana. The baseline towers are pretty efficient per mana, and the EV buff beam is the only thing worth upgrading with the extra mana. turns it into easy mode even on maps you struggle with.
Something worth considering when deciding where to put your jester stats is casters (the community term for characters used to upgrade) are generally easier to level up since you can use them in waves at lower levels than your other hero's without it feeling like they're just a burden i always try to spec my characters as casters while leveling them up even if it means i have to spend mana to respec them later it's worth it imo
Btw it's not optimal in the slightest but I'd like to see you make the jester a tower jester in the long run because it's kind of a fun build and not something you get to see people use often also I feel like it ties in well with what you say about finding a balance between efficiency and inefficiency
One more thing nobody's mentioning it but no matter how you level your jester you should try to get your resistances on your armor as high as possible jester is one of the heroes you use most mid wave in the end game

Wolf hunter is just as good as lupine you just want to avoid van wolfinstein that one is automatically worse
Btw If you afk on survival and use monk try his defence boost ability. It helps waves go quicker and also heals your defences

You can do whatever you want with your jester, but most people use it as a DPS or upgrading hero.

I recomend using the jester as a mix of dps and upgrader so you could invest the stats into Either hero cast rate or hero dmg
