Portal Review. How's it holding up?

- I was sick for the last week+ and had been holding off recording this video until I sounded better. Or, that is what I thought. I went to record this, and felt like I was having some difficulties enunciating, but didn't think too much about it.
Well, I go to edit my voiceover the day after, and realized why I couldn't speak correctly...I sound like I shoved a sock in each of my nostrils. And because of this, I wasn't able to rerecord a few spots that I normally would have, as my voice was a lot clearer the next day.
So while I am going to apologize for how terrible my voiceover and editing is in this one, I also found it "Ubpsolutely" hilarious to listen to, and decided to keep it.
As for Portal, it is a FPS puzzle game based around shooting portals and making gateways. There is also possibly a murderous AI trying to indirectly kill you. The cake is....(ugh, I hate myself)
he said: "its lacking any true story" my man doesn't know any of portal and portal 2's story line.
Correct. Did I miss something obvious with Portal's ingame story? Portal 2 is on the short list of what to play soon.
@@1st10gaming8 yes there's so much of the backstory in portal 2, so if you want you can search up the portal lore as its actually pretty good, apparently its in the same universe of half life.
@@1st10gaming8 in game, not really but there is a comic and the dev commentary gives insight, but the portal lore is really deep
Wild finding someone who only recently played portal
I know right? Mistake fixed.
I’ve always been a Nintendo guy, so I was psyched to see it finally get ported to Switch. Add one more to the list of people playing it for the first time, it’s a gem
@@emblemblade9245 Yeah I remember playing it on steam (lost that account) as a kid, it was great to finally replay it, hope hl2 comes to switch
ive been trained by portal to just never use run anyway
also yeah the sense of abandonment is intentional
"the sense of abandonment is intentional"
That appears to be some foreshadowing.
There are two things you should know:
- The original Portal was first released as part of a collection known as "The Orange Box". This could be the reason why it's short. The Orange Box is still available on Steam. In addition to Portal, it also includes both episodes of Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2.
- Portal 2 is much longer, with a Much better story. Two-person multiplayer is a great experience too! Much closer to the original Portal in its feel than the single-player story, but with harder puzzles.
Yeah, I think I missed a lot not playing Half Life back in the day (really wasn't into solo FPS games @ that time...really wasn't into a lot of any solo games @ that time).
And Portal 2 multiplayer looks like it is going to be a pretty killer.
I love portal
I love this take on the game. It's like cooking the perfect steak but no sides. And you said you have yet to play a portal 2, and by using your analogy, I would describe it as a 3 course meal.
One comment to note, when you specified that it was a proof of concept that's exactly what it is. It was never meant to be a standalone title just a pleasant surprise for people who bought the orange box, but everyone liked it so much they decided to sell it separately. For a while it was even free.
Quick thing I wanna note: Neither color portal is exclusively an entry or an exit, if that makes sense. You can go through either freely, doesn't matter which color is where.
Literally the reason for chamber 03, where it forces you to go through the orange portal. (It is actually possible without going through the orange portal)
This is an awesome review! This i underated
I would like to see your review on Portal 2 since i just finished it myself! I can tell you straight up that its a really amazing game.
Soon-ish. How soon is that? I can't say.
Most of the flaws you mention here are solved in Portal 2. It has a awesome story and characters, more gameplay, pretty visuals, and adds a lot of lore.
I think you would love Portal 2 if you liked this one
You should play portal 2 it's a way better game making it longer funnier and expanding on the whole portal idea
For a while, my excuse for never playing was that I didn't have a PC. And money. But then, when it released on the Switch AND went on sale, I finally got it and played both 1 and 2.
legit excuse.
Played both games on Switch and they have taken up my headspace ever since.
I had a moment today where the same make of vehicle, in the same color was in front of mine, and the first thing I thought about was looking @ myself through a portal.
I think this game is going to have a lasting effect on me.
@@1st10gaming8 It definitely will have a lasting effect. I played way back maybe around 2012 and fell in love with both games. I definitely recommend the second one I think you’ll enjoy it better. Also the part of the video we’re you felt it was a incomplete game fun fact: Portal developer’s we’re actually recent graduates from Digi Pen. Anyway long story short the Portal developer for their final project created a game called Narbacular Drop which has very similar mechanics/concepts to Portal. Valve took note of this told them to show them their game and, we’re hired on the spot and, we’re told to recreate it in the source engine. They started pre production on Portal in 2005 I believe and, it started off with a Nova Prospect design if you don’t know what Nova Prospect is it’s a level from Half-Life 2 one of Valve’s game’s definitely deserves a play if you haven’t played it. It did start to look like Portal until 2006 and, then they finished it and, released it in The Orange Box one of the best video game deals ever. BTW one last thing their are videos that definitely cover what I said better I recommend you check them out.
@@TheExtraordinarySaiyan0709 While I was unaware of Portal's history, I am also not surprised by it. I knew it loosely had some connection to Half Life (which I never played), but nothing beyond that. I definitely see why they picked these guys up for a game though, because it was a great concept.
Thank you for the history explanation. Always cool finding out how things came to be.
As for Half Life 2...I never had plans of playing it...but now I might have to consider it. Cmon...did you miss the part where I said I was trying to get games off the list, not add more? (joking)
@@1st10gaming8 My B Bro 😂🤣🤣 You should also check out the Left 4 Dead series if you haven’t played that yet ether. Also your welcome I like learning about stuff that happen’s behind the scenes in game development it’s very interesting what you can learn also whenever you do your Portal 2 video I’ll have some more history for you.
I finished it just a few months ago, it still looks good, even on a 27" monitor.
The end credits song is great.
I got portal just last year. I loved it.
Portal 1 is essentially a mod to Half-Life that became something more of a proof of concept. I mean literally as soon as they released the Orange Box, they started work for Portal 2.
This was a super interesting take on a game, considering you hadn't played the game until recently. Most "reviews" of this game are hours long retroperspectives with the video author playing the game since they came out the womb lol. It's nice to get a fresh perspective.
I found your point about the game feeling unfinished very relatable, although I hadn't really thought about it consciously before but it had always been at the back of my mind. I think that unfinished feeling may be due to Portal 1's infamously short development time. Considering what they managed to accomplish in the short time they had though, I think they did fantastic! What irks me personally about the game is that I can't shake the Half Life-ey feeling to it. I know its supposed to be in the same universe but still, its just not quite right. Makes me feel like I'm playing a Half Life 2 mod rather than a seperate game if that makes sense?
Anyways, interesting review! Would love to see more of these.
I hear you on the people making reviews for their favorite game for the last 20 years. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I know if I was to review something like Legend of Zelda from the NES, I wouldn't be able to give it a "fair" review because of its nostalgic worth to me. Although honestly, I don't think I could recommend it to a younger gamer today...it just didn't age well enough (okay, maybe I could be critical of it).
And I was unaware of the short development time, which would totally explain the "unfinished" quality to it. I also have no Half Life experience, so I can't make comparisons to it. Having said that, I am still glad I finally got around to Portal, because it really was a great experience.
Portal was never meant to be a standalone game, it is in fact intended to be a mod for Half-Life. that is why it seems Half-Lifey. They use assets from Half-Life and you can even spawn in anything from Half-Life as the game literally runs as "hl.exe" 😅 Portal 1 is basically Half-Life.
I do not agree with your take that the game feels unfinished, but to each their own!
Portal 2 will erase all your critic you had on this game exept for the dificulty, that got tripeled.
4:48 i had the same problem, i was stuck for 10 minutes searching this button
quick review:
does it hold up?
yes.
I've heard people recommending skipping this game and going striaght to portal 2 instead, which is a big no no. portal 1 needs to be experienced, even if it's not a long game.
I will be getting to Portal 2 soon to make the comparison. Although, I think Portal will still be able to hold up, as it was quite a fun game.
No offense bro but you cant just show the most spoilery thing possible right BEFORE saying "you can now click away from the video if you want to avoid spoilers"
I mean, GLaDOS is kinda both the mascot of the game, and also in my thumbnail. It isn't some big reveal that the AI voice talking to you throughout the game is a robot.
And let's be honest here, the only reason you think it would be a spoiler is because you played the game already.
I mean, you gotta admit it's kinda silly to put a spoiler warning over footage of the final part of the game.
if your looking for it being more story drive, then portal two fits that category, it has longer gameplay, a story, and lore.
Really Great Video!
I feel like you shorten those pauses a little, add a clear visual transition between section, like when you went from Controls to humor, perhaps add a title card or something along those lines, 0therwise this video was really good!
Also Portal 2 Feels like much more of a game! Give it a go!
You aren't wrong about the transitions, I just haven't figured out exactly what I want to do there. I'm trying to come up with something that isn't too Powerpoint or too canned looking.
Thanks for the feedback.
i have portal 1 but haven't played it, great video though, i do recommend portal 2 as it is a great game. I believe p2 is longer but i played that game in sections so no idea how long the game actually is.
keep doing the videos, great job on this one
4 hours for a pro otherwise 8 hours
Now play Portal 2.
aye aye cap'n.
