      My '08 Corolla isn't as easy. The first cat faces the firewall. The good thing is, the exhaust manifold isn't welded to the cat. Instead, the cat unbolts off the manifold. The downside is, both cats are connected to the exhaust pipe all the way up to a bolted flange connecting to the muffler. So unless you want to cut the cats out separately or you have to remove the whole section of piping from cat to cat. I'm at a crossroads where I either buy the piece that includes both cats for about $150 or drop the exhaust and remove the "honeycomb innards" then reinstall. Living in NM there aren't any vehicle inspections. Unlike NJ, where I grew up, that had yearly inspections and they were sticklers.

      Wes I’m doing this this weekend on my 03 Camry. It’s burning oil like crazy and fouled up the catalytic converter. I’m not gonna have the vehicle for much longer but need it to pass emissions this year.

    • @wes1934
      @wes1934 5 лет назад

      I fixed the oil burning issue - not in any way a mechanic would 'fix' it (no replacement of internal engine components, etc) the '09 2.4L camry now has 356k miles. i'll be doing the catalytic converter this weekend as well...

      @@wes1934 How did you fix the oil burning problem?

    • @wes1934
      @wes1934 3 месяца назад

      @@isaac4273 I changed the oil to valvoline 5w-20 high mileage *conventional* oil for several months (mobile 1 should work too). (This should double your oil change frequency using conventional oil.) Add a quart of Duralube engine treatment and Prolong engine treatment to crankcase every oil change. It's best to change the oil yourself so you can add these *before* adding the new oil to avoid overfill. I started seeing results after two oil changes - it went from burning a quart every 300 miles to half a quart. It kept improving. After 8 oil changes it was burning 1/4 a quart every 300 miles. Changed oil every 1500-2000 miles.
      Also, perhaps every other oil change (or at least do this once) is a crankcase flush/clean with standard WD-40. Before changing oil, let the engine idle, open the oil filler cap on the crankcase and spray and entire can of WD-40 into the crankcase as it idles. This can be messy if it's blowing a lot of air out, so I use a rag to cover the filler opening and slip the WD-40 straw under the rag and spray. (I rec'd using the WD40 with the metallic straw, because the red plastic one will melt if it touches the crankcase opening while engine is hot). Once you empty the can, put the filler-cap back on and let engine idle for an additional 20 minutes to circulate the WD40. (Definitely do not drive the car with the WD-40 in the crankcase or you'll likely burn out a main bearing.) Then change the oil.
      I still have this '09 Camry w/ the 2AZ-FE engine. The engine is now at 492k miles and I'm back to using mobile 1 full-synthetic. I don't drive it much now because it has bad output shaft bearing in the transmission that makes noise and causes annoying vibrations. I may just replace the transmission at some point since it's otherwise in good shape.

      @isaac4273 3 месяца назад

    It's a good idea to check fuel trims and o2 operation. Wouldn't want the inferior aftermarket to fail quickly. Wouldn't be a bad idea to replace o2 sensors if they have a lot of miles on them plus after you crack them loose they usually crap out.

    i tested my catalytic converter and it was around 750 Fahrenheit, seems to be ok. still getting the code after clearing and test driving. Stft is good averaging +/- 3% but LTFT is pretty high around 16% at idle for both. im thinkin of replacing downstream sensor after testing voltage. hopefully it isnt the actual cat. Great content btw, fast and precise

      @@franciscosepulveda just wondering if you received the same P0420 code prior to changing your cat?I have an 05 tc scion with 260k. A few months back I received that same code while my car was bucking under various throttle loads. I flushed out my fuel injectors and put in a new fuel pump. So far no more code as of now. Not sure why I received that code as it seems unrelated to my pump/injectors. Should I still be concerned with cat?

    • @franciscosepulveda

      Valboski 619 yes, I did get the P0420 code prior changing the catalytic. I changed the cat as well as both sensors (O2 and Fuel) that’s fixed the problem and code never came back. Prior changing my Cat I also cleaned the sensors and the injectors but the code came back eventually so I had no choice but to change the Catalytic

    I have a 2000 Camry. P0420 code. Does a p0420 code only relate to the Catalytic converter in the manifold or does that also mean a problem with the lower or second catalytic convertor? If my 2nd catalytic converter is bad and my catalytic converter in the manifold is good will this cause a p0420 code?
