Thank you so much Stuart, that's very kind of you, it was a fun challenge and I learned a great deal about the machine and how to get the best from it, I love to watch the random creativity of wood turners, but metal lathe turning is seemingly more about hand eye coordination... thanks again for your kind words and have a great week!
I bet I've watched this a half a dozen times. I can't say thank you enough, brother. To all of you who said, "I bet he loves it," you are absolutely correct. I do love it. It's a beautiful piece, and the love and respect it comes with mean the world. Thanks again!
Thank you very much my friend, it was indeed a week, or so, of thought and planning, I had considered welding the end in, but I just wanted to make it a bit more old school, fully assembled from five separate parts!
It's all good experience and a nice useful product that you can enjoy all your lifetime with a happy memory. Good video and thanks Delboy for sharing here with us.
I literally could watch this lathe all day, watching a blank piece of metal turned into something is therapeutic for me. Your much more than just a mechanic Del. And that gift for a friend is priceless, Money can’t buy that kind of personal touch 👍 amazing stuff Del really enjoyed that 🤙
Thank you my friend, that's so kind, I have a profound respect for ancient traditions, and to make a gift creatively with your own hands for somebody who is important to you, has been a traditional for thousands of years!
That's one solid, shiny bottle opener. :) Just a thought. I think one of the reasons it is so fascinating to watch you work is that you go straight at it, thinking all along the way with a big helping of natural talent that borders on artistry. You also seem to know how materials will behave and that is half the battle won in my humble opinion. I know when I'm working with technical things I am much more clumsy and nothing ever looks as finished or accomplished even though I am following your instructions and have had very proficient people show me stuff over the years. No matter though. I continue to learn and you are a good teacher, so thank you:)
Hi Patricia, what an honour to hear such kind praise, I always find it's just a matter of taking your time and not being prepared to settle for an average finish within reason, of course! Am sure you realise with all things, the devil's in the detail and over half the job is making the final finish... take care, keep enjoying it and keep in touch!
Thank you kindly Sir, the lathe has been criticised by those who always know better, there's always another option, or another model, and everyone thinks their choice is better, but this was my choice and I'm happy with it, took me a year to devise the right way forward, we looked at old classic machines, but there was always a reason why not to choose them, whether it be distance, logistics, price, or the dreadful condition of some of them... I see this as my 'first lathe' and I will up-grade to a better one once I've developed the skills to desvere it, and make use of it, no point in putting Nike trainers on your Granny, she might look cool, but they won't make her run any faster!.... really glad you're enjoying it, we really appreciate your support!
Hi, watching your lathe videos. I stumbeled on your new lathe video, immediately like the way you work, how you take care of the lathe, pack everything away, neat, your videos are good, I just like it. I can't say youre hired, but as a viewer you subscribed. Enjoy the time machine as everything can be round get round.
Thanks Chris, appreciate your kind words, and glad you enjoy the videos, am getting to know it now, really enjoying the small projects I can get involved in!
Absolutely outstanding work Del. I think your mate will be chuffed to bits with that. You're getting your head around this lathe pretty bloody well. Penny and you have a good week. Cheers
Thank you kindly Sir, slow but sure, and it's basic stuff, nothing too technical, am just getting used to operating the machine, getting the feel for how it cuts and operates and what metals react in different ways, etc., still have a lot to learn! Good to hear from you as always, D&Px
Excellent stuff. Working on a lathe is very therapeutic, almost as much as watching someone else do it. You did well to grind that slot as straight as you did, freehand with an angle grinder. I suspect I would have ended up in a pickle trying to do that!!
Thanks buddy, it's not that hard to cut straight with the grinder, it's just little things like marking the line and following it really slowly, lean on the bench and secure your arms against your body, and then just gradually lean forward and there's a lot more control as it slides through the metal!
Of course, friends are more more valuable than time and effort, we've long forgotten the history, and origins, of jewellery and tools that were handmade, these things would have been prized possession 1000yrs ago, taken weeks or more to make, from precious materials and the meaning behind the giving of that gift was lifelong profound... to make a gift for a friend is the greatest honour you can give...
Beautiful. And that must be very satisfying to make too. I remember I got chuffed just by polishing up my fairing fasteners in a drill so this must be a whole new ball game. Lucky friend... :o)
Too right Brother, am thinking this lathe should be called a Tardis! Takes you to another place for 12hrs and then brings you back with something that didn't exist on this planet beforehand !
Del you have come a long way. I have been following you for a couple of years now and have seen some of your early stuff too. Not to put myself in the same boat as you but it gives me hope for me and my channels knowing that with time and experience maybe some day I can reach this level too. Man your a quick learner for sure. Some may not think this has anything to do with the shop or bikes but the bottle opener is a great tool to help finish the day with a cold brew. Great work Del. Be safe and God bless
Thank you brother, kinder words I couldn't wish for... but I have to say this, you said 'not to put myself in the same boat as you'... you are already there brother, maybe you don't realise I look up to you and so do many, perhaps you don't realise how good you are, your cool and laid back style is addictive, even watching you fit bulbs in your Harley, you're a down to earth blue collar guy saying it how it is in the coolest East Coast way, love to meet you some day, and share that brew, keep it touch, and thanks for your long term support, all the very best from England, Del
If I may make a suggestion, toss that tool holder and get a KDK,there is a copy of it and youll wonder how or why you ever messed with the stock tool holder, each block that holds a tool is very simple to adjust the height on ,set it and forget it,toss the shims for setting the tool height, one last tip,you can set the tool height by trapping a 6 inch scale (with the lathe stationary) between the tool bit and a turned o.d. when the sale is vertical the tool is on center
Hi There Joe.. Thanks for that insight buddy, i do have a QCTP on the list of upgrades, and yes it would make it easier to set the height and save me time buggering about with shims... and if you haven't noticed already in some of the lathe videos, i already trap a steel rule against the work piece with the tool to check the height.. i picked that little nugget up really quick.. Thanks for your input sir, and appreciate you watching... Del.
Another nice result del, looks like your definitely getting the hang of the lathe. Just goes to show that you can achieve really nice pieces on the cheaper lathes no need to spend thousands. I've got a Chinese mini lathe and for the home garage there's absolutely nothing wrong with them.well done
Hi buddy, thanks for that endorsement, I don't really consider this a Chinese min-lathe (and I acknowledge you're not saying it is!), I'd say this is somewhere in between, but I wanted to cut my teeth on something basic and affordable, and at the same time not worn out and in need of restoring, which the old ones seem to need... it makes me smile the amount of people who knock this lathe, who've clearly never stood in front of one, one person even inventing the accusation that it had plastic drive gears, which just made me chuckle... one of the experienced machinists who sent me some equipment, made a profound statement when I chatted with him on the phone... he said that the people who will mock and insult this machine have probably never stood in front of a lathe in their life and simply joining in with the classic unfair Chinese bashing on their comments are to be ignored, fact is we spent a year deciding on the right direction, we looked at an old Myford, even a wonderful old Bridgeport, which I could have bought, but they were too big for the garage, needed too much doing to them, and they were the other side of the country... the one I really fell in love with was a mighty industrial Colchester lathe, but it was 2 tons and would have been a pointless purchase, this lathe suits who I am, just a beginning, learning some basics and like you, I enjoy it and am happy with my lathe, China or not!! Thank you for your kind support buddy, once again, I appreciate the endorsement...
theres something so mesmerizing del about watching you craft such beautiful works out art out of metal with such attention to detail. its no wonder the views are coming in. keep it up. loving these!
I like these very much! I also like when you do explaining and say what you're going to try and then have a go and talk about what went right and wrong and what changed and, maybe a bit more about the new lathe and how you're making it work.. does that make sense? I know it must make a fun task take 3 times as long having to film and talk and stuff so yah.. Either way I liked this one too. Thanks for sharing your time.
Thank you Sir, much appreciated, I know what you're getting at, but I really don't feel confident passing on any instruction on the lathe, I've literally only just started to use one again since I last touched one at school, so what do I know lol... but as time goes on, and I start to find my rhythm and find I can repeat task reliably, then I'll be able to pass that on and make the videos a little more interactive! Thank you again for your faith, and support, much appreciated.
@@Moonfleet41 I see what you mean.. I really appreciate your videos and I watch them all. Who was it that said.. there's something to be said for failure, it's so much more interesting than success. hah! I hope to get to Compton Abbas before Christmas.. one weekend I'm not sure. I only have a car so. Bye!
@@ollieb9875 Oh I see, I think once the projects get a bit more in depth, then as always, like with the fighter build, I'm happy to share the highs and lows. Penny is fine and says Hi!
Yeap, thats the way to do it, that is how we sharpen our blade, from small projects like these that explore various skills and techniques to larger ones that'll pose engineering challenges. We're never too old to learn are'nt we
Thanks buddy, you know how it is, ten things I could have done better (or will do next time!), but happy with it for a first attempt, hope you're feeling better, let's chat soon?!
That looks great and I'm sure the person who gets it will be well chuffed. One thing you need to be careful of is, the position of the cutting tool in the tool post Del. I should always be on the same side as the chuck. That way you don't bury the tool post into the chuck and bugger them both up and roll your sleeves up. You wont like it if the get caught in the chuck. Keep up the good work and enjoy
Hi buddy, thanks for that time, I was aware of that when I did it and how I was breaking a 'rule' there, but I found that the toolpost block hit the live centre as I was using a inset tip tool that was really short and that's why I only cut so close to the chuck then stopped to give room for the cross slide not hitting the chuck, I was advised previously a good lesson by my buddy Duke Dyson, to always rehearse, or practice run, every movement operation without the machine running, turning the chuck by hand to check for clearance... this has been the greatest part of the lathe subject so far, has been all the great things to learn that are no so obvious... thanks for confirming that advice buddy, all the best, Del
That looks brilliant Del...bet it didn't feel like 12 hrs... tinkering away like that is great for the soul...& Yes that is definitely a tool that every gentleman should have, great job & very creative, you should feel proud cheers🍻
Im sure your buddy will be very pleased with that ;) excellent lathe work and finish Del. Also I couldn't help noticing on the white board the reference to master of puppets. Ride safe mate!
Hi buddy, many thanks for your kind words, the whiteboard used to be a place to just note down what I'd done in each episode, but that become a bit boring, so now, just for giggles, we try and tie a classic song lyric in with what I've done in that episode!
Hi buddy, in that box is the stand for the lathe when I get round to shifting the garage about, I was thinking of putting it the far right corner on it's own stand, rather than on the table at the front...!
@@Moonfleet41 yes i think thats a good spot, remember to just leave enough room to work safe. Ride safe seeing as the weather is about to bugger off somewhere else LoL.
You might want to roll up your sleeves or one day you are going to become attached to the chuck. I saw it happen to a guy on the lathe next to me. Very nice finished project, Mackie will be very happy :)
Hi buddy, this isn't for a You Tuber, and as you can already see, Mackie has his bottole opener screwed to the bench! Thanks for the tip , have a great week...
U should get different tool post for the lathe so u can have multiple tool ready at one time so u can switch it with just taking off on tool and putting the next tool holder into the slots and start cutting
Yes i know that Damian, i will get a quick change at some point.. but this little item hold four tools at once if you take the time to set it up.. then you just rotate it to the one you want... not as good by any means, ok for now.
I haven't buddy, that's interesting... am learning lots on my journey in to the world of machining and really appreciate kind suggestions like that, cos it's the easiest way to learn new tricks and improve the skills, cheers!
Yes Del, your doing very very good job for a first time machinest ,iam a centre lathe turner, miller, borer, slotter ect, plus a biker,I can work lots of different machines.Ive worked for the same company for over 40 years. So any questions you need to know about lathe work ect,I will try and help you buddy.Ps i hate the people saying stupid comments about your work on this bottle opener. You did a great job and you should be very proud of the end result no matter how long it took you.
Super wirk Delboy. I think a discrete “DBG” stamp either on the bottom of the handle or, maybe more suitably, the base of the business end would add a little personal touch; and provenance.
Bruv, what an amazing job done. Big boys toys, as a child I bet you had Tonka toys lol. You have made some cool bits on that lathe keep them coming it's even more interesting than watching paint dry and you have me watching that too. Ride safe buddy

Hay Dai, great to hear from you as always, just hoping this weather's gonna hold, so we can keep riding a bit longer before the snow comes and you have to buy some knobblies for the Aprilia! Love to all, D&Px
Hi Jim, coming from your Sir, that is praise indeed, thank you so much, I've been amazed at how creative you can be so far, but I've got to focus more on working to spec and sizes if I'm to make practical things that work as well as toys for boys!
Mate , I am so pleased for you , watching your progress on the lathe is very satisfying , to spend a long full day making a gift is commendable but not surprising...I had a really strange public reaction when i gave my buddy /band mate Sam one of my cars recently (he needed one i had loads ) ..it gave me more pleasure experiencing his delight than the financial worth had i sold it...and hes building me a bass now !! (which i didnt expect !)so all's fair... you are a gentleman with a big heart ..cheers brother peace and love..👍☮❤
Ayup brother Springy, you are so right mate, there is ten times the joy in giving, than recieving, no price can be put on the sight of a kid's face at Xmas, or the love and respect of a good friend, when you go the extra mile for them! Good things happen to good people aye? Have a great week buddy, D&Px
Thanks David, it was easy, I just made sure I was using a cryptonite cutting disc on the grinder and powdered cryptonite on the sandpaper... easay lol! Seroiusly, thank you for your support, it's much appreciated.
Nice work ! May I suggest you google a chap called Harold hall . A model engineer who wrote some excellent work on Lathe usage and grinding your own hss tools.
Simply immersive viewing Del , I was totally drawn into the profiling of the handle and what a beautiful result, you should be well proud . I can see that there are going to be some amazing custom parts made for future bike builds and probably other stuff too . Also enjoying the fact that you are posting later on in the evening , as good as , if not better than a couple of chapters from a good book . All the best mate , C.
Thanks Charlie, you're very kind mate, just tried out the late posting idea as we have viewers round the world and for some people, specially the USA, where over half our viewers are, it's later afternoon, early evening, so kinda prime time, and in Australia it's the next day's lunchtime, so it seems to work! No tips or advice from me, Del, just admiration. What a satisfying project and smart outcome. Top job, mate 👍
Thank you Keith, much appreciated mate, have a great week...
What a lovely bit if kit, great fun to watch, polishing is so easy using the right gear. Well done mate 👍👍😎
I like the harley mug
i love your shop it looks great i have the same licence plates on my wall Not as many but im getting there your lathe is awesome
It's a thing of beauty Del, you should be proud!
Hi Martin, hope you're well mate, there's a couple of things I might have done a bit differently, ut it's easy to ssay that when it's finished!
Yeap, thats the way to do it, that is how we sharpen our blade, from small projects like these that explore various skills and techniques to larger ones that'll pose engineering challenges. We're never too old to learn are'nt we
Lovely result buddy, looks fantastic :)
Thanks buddy, you know how it is, ten things I could have done better (or will do next time!), but happy with it for a first attempt, hope you're feeling better, let's chat soon?!
good work dell . the first thing i ever turned was a handle for a glass cutter
Thanks buddy, don't we always treasure these things as time goes on!
Great job Del, makes my magnetic Homer Simpson one look proper shit 😂😂
DOH!
Always a great pleasure to see you at work it seems so obvious
That looks brilliant Del...bet it didn't feel like 12 hrs... tinkering away like that is great for the soul...& Yes that is definitely a tool that every gentleman should have, great job & very creative, you should feel proud cheers🍻
Thank you my friend, that's very kind of you, it's a labour of love and am enjoying learning new skills...
Simply Outstanding bud. great job.
Overengineering at its finest, I love it. Keep up the amazing work chief!
Thanks mate, that's very kind of you, a new direction and taking you along on the journey, am lvoing learning new skills!
Yep luv it del. Looks amazing nice one😎😎
Fantastic work del, but i think all of us are "wondering" WHATS in the BOX :).
Nice one Delboy, t'riffic mini-series, nicely shot and cool background music as well. Spot-on, fella.
Thanks buddy, much appreciated!
Yes I’d did look familiar 😀 looks great you just missed the flat side s
haha d'ya know what mate, I even considered filing them in!
Perfect gift for mackie ;D
(P) Stunning Del, what a work of art. I’m sure he will be pleased 👍🏻
Thanks mate, really enjoying creating, just gives another dimension .. hope you and the family are well, big hugs from both of us to you all , D&Px
Nice job Del, if it was me I would say I made it for a friend, but I'm keeping it.
Fantastic dude love the curvy handle some work when’t into that keep em coming
Superb job there buddy 🤘🤘
Thanks Stu!
Have you tried a spiral flute tap they work so much better, you can tap straight through a hole without backing it off
I haven't buddy, that's interesting... am learning lots on my journey in to the world of machining and really appreciate kind suggestions like that, cos it's the easiest way to learn new tricks and improve the skills, cheers!
And i thought Pen was the jewellery designer 😂😂👌👌
Thank you buddy, imagine what she can achieve lol
Well, you really knocked that clear out of the park didn't you.
Thanks buddy, just using it as great practice, have a lot to learn, but enjoying learning !
Hi Del very nice work nice and shinnnny
Nice work dellboy. Shiny
Cheers buddy, have just decided on the next project build, it's gonna be right up your street mate...!
Really smart job there Del :-) and good to see you improving your skills on the lathe too
Thanks Mark, much appreciated!
Super wirk Delboy. I think a discrete “DBG” stamp either on the bottom of the handle or, maybe more suitably, the base of the business end would add a little personal touch; and provenance.
Nice job, is it for Mackey.🤔
There you go, next project..
A tripod for the camera.👍🏻
Nope, not even warm lol ! Cheers buddy...
Del, you should post a Test video of your friend testing your awesome creation :)
May get a photograph, or two, plan to be with him on the day we christen it (not for a few weeks yet!)...
Bruv, what an amazing job done. Big boys toys, as a child I bet you had Tonka toys lol. You have made some cool bits on that lathe keep them coming it's even more interesting than watching paint dry and you have me watching that too. Ride safe buddy
Cheers Ray, replied to your email, chat soon mate!
very nice, was also good to meet you at thorpe park on halloween i was the security out the front :)
Oh awesome! I was hoping you'd get in touch, thanks so much for your hospitality mate, it was a busy night aye?! Hope you got home on time.. keep in touch fellah, and thanks again for saying Hi!
@@Moonfleet41 got home about 11pm in the end, yeh was a very busy day, you wouldn't believe the crap people try to take in lol
@@T1NY85 Yeah, i could smell it everywhere outside the gate... skanky basdids aye..!
Top job mate looks brilliant
Thanks mate!
Top job, lovely finish there Del!
Now I’m thirsty.......
Hay Dai, great to hear from you as always, just hoping this weather's gonna hold, so we can keep riding a bit longer before the snow comes and you have to buy some knobblies for the Aprilia! Love to all, D&Px
that is just brilliant wow !
(P) Awesome job...quite creative, and a fantastic result! Love the final polish!
Thanks buddy, that's really kind, really enjoying learning !
@@Moonfleet41 it looks like great fun! I need to come visit and see the magic happen! LOL

👌
A mechanic with amazing skills, don’t short change yourself Del this is top class work 👍🏻
Thank you buddy, that's very kind, we really appreciate it!
That's nice del.
you should do the weight for the tripod with that machine.
AMAZING work! 👍
Hi Jim, coming from your Sir, that is praise indeed, thank you so much, I've been amazed at how creative you can be so far, but I've got to focus more on working to spec and sizes if I'm to make practical things that work as well as toys for boys!
Well deserved praise Del, well deserved 👍
Very nice indeed .
This is talent mate! I loved it!
Have a great week buddy, D&Px
wow!
Beatiful 👏
I can't believe how to cut to Superman and Batman
You're very powerfull 😎🤘
Jajajajaja
Exelent video and job my friend
Like always
Regards 👍
Thanks David, it was easy, I just made sure I was using a cryptonite cutting disc on the grinder and powdered cryptonite on the sandpaper... easay lol! Seroiusly, thank you for your support, it's much appreciated.
@@Moonfleet41 😂 exelent answer! 👏🏼
Always it's a pleasure buddy 😀👍
Nice work ! May I suggest you google a chap called Harold hall . A model engineer who wrote some excellent work on Lathe usage and grinding your own hss tools.
Thanks for the tip buddy, I will give him a look... thank you!
And yeah, better than a Mills & Boon anyway lol Have a great week buddy, D&Px
Slow down del.... Lol.. Your gunna put the lads out a business. Lol.. Loving the lathe stuff fella, keep the vids coming, therapeutic man, just moved all my setup back home..... Lathe is on the list.....
Thank you buddy, yeah get one, you won't look back!
Very very good. Enjoyed that project and I look forward to receiving it in the post, lol.ian.
cracking job del your mate will be proud
top job Del
wow. im a total novice at this stuff but are you sure you are to thats incredible work
Yes buddy, last time I touched a lathe was as a 15yr old lad at school... and that was a very long time ago lol...
