I’d always envied that scene in The Fly where Jeff Goldblume opens his closet and has 8 versions the same suit in there. He wanted to reduce the number of decisions in his day. That’s a big part of it. It’s like a present that you give yourself later. Whether it’s. Waking up to a clean kitchen or being completely happy pulling anything out of my closet to wear, it’s liberating!

I agree. I found voluntary simplicity in my twenties and thirty years of living that way has made us millionaires. We never needed much so as our incomes grew and we had no debt we saved the difference. We drive cars ten years or older, built a modest house, no debt, buy what we need and only buy luxuries that add value to our life. We live fairly minimally. We value being outside, exercise, reading and hanging out with family. That time makes me feel richer than my bank accounts. Love the video.

My husband has Parkinson's and since I removed all the clutter and all the extra furniture he can get around a lot easier in his wheelchair. I have also noticed a calming in him since the clutter is gone. I put up just a very few Christmas decorations and relied on balsam candles and Christmas music to decorate our home and he seemed so peaceful and happy with it. With Parkinson's he can get very agitated and physically rocky. A calm environment is essential to his well being. We say no to most social activities out of necessity because of his disease and our life is very simple and very beautiful. We have created a home that we don't want to escape from. My goal is to keep him home and out of care facilities. We do have help come in. Because we have been frugal we can easily afford the help and I am happy to pay for it. Our CNAs are like family and our employment of them helps them immensely. Win win! Happy New Year Gabe! So glad you showed your little daughter at the end of your video I was wondering if she went with you! That is very cool!

The #1 reason for reducing the amount of possessions that I "owned" is because I realized they owned me and my time. Too much of life was spent paying for a house to provide "climate control storage" for items I purchased but rarely if ever used. Really sad to look back on my life on how blind I was to the situation and what I was missing to buy, clean, organize, move stuff. Not quite done but now I have time to spend or help friends and family that I didn't have in the past.

We had to only get each of our three boys only 4 presents for Christmas out of financial distress this year, and not even four good presents. Each got a Lego and a video game, a toothbrush, and one other small item. It was very minimalistic out of necessity. But it ended up being amazing. We normally would have filled the tree with so many presents, that several were cheep filler items, or things they never even really end up playing with, or break. Same with thier stickings, just a few good items, or treats, no break in 5 min cheep stuff, that costs more in the long run. It saved us so much money, so much clean up afterward, and they boys didn't feel like they went without. I actually want to do it like this every year, even when we are better off financially. Or even wrap certificates for family activities. I really think this will save us time, space, and money!

I certainly agree with you..After watching your videos I put all my estates for rent. I also decided to travel & live from my pensions from three different countries that allowed me to live in magnific beach front properties in different countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica and The Phillipines
Later I realized I also did not need all of that stuff so I stated living only.in 5 stars hotels. This idea was sooo much better because now I dont have cook or do laundry anymore and I have my room clean & bed sheets changed single everyday !
My last move was selling my cars & now I only rent a brand new models in every destination I go.
I also dont carry too much stuff anymore. Instead I simply buy only what I need when I need including my clothes. This makes me feel far more local in the comunity I am on that moment. Sooo.much easier !

I’ve been reading “To Hell with the Hustle” and it’s really helped get me excited for the new year. Your channel is helping too! God bless you and your family!!

Well done! Totally motivated. Love my newly decluttered house. Man, once you go through everything, EVERYTHING in your house and give it the “hell yes/no” test, it gives you a great sense of peace. That, in turn, creates more space, which, in turn, makes you realize how little space you really need.
Starting by sitting in my main room and imagining/visualizing some task getting done to the point where I have an emotional response to it. Like, “ooh, nice, ahhhh…clean cupboards!”. At that point I’m absolutely compelled to do the work because I’ve deeply felt the reward. Total brain hack. Works every time.

As soon as the house is done and kids go to kindergarden however we will save more. I just hope it will actually get done! I really hope I won't get stuck in the "what next" trap.

Minimalism for me was a slow process. My mom was a hoarder. I took almost nothing when I moved out. I bought a rug. It was a proud purchase. Then I bought a bed and a few other items. I was forced to move back in with my parents. She stole the rug. I asked where it was. She had it shoved in her attic. I demanded it back. She acted like I was stealing it. I had purchased it from a friend for $10. It had become a prized possession, not just more junk. I realized I didn't want to be like her. I got older and owned more and more stuff. It hit me that I was becoming my mother. I started weeding everything out annually a little at a time. Nowadays I'm down a lot of stuff. Our finances are up a lot.

Thanks for all your wonderful content. I found Christmas very stressful and wondered "What would Gabe do?" I have two adult/college aged children and a husband who don't share my interest in minimalist. They gave me many gifts, things that I don't need - appliances that I now have to find space for (like a coffee maker made of mostly plastic when I was happily using a ceramic melitta and stainless steel kettle to heat water), a mini-chopper, and a rice cooker. My husband bought himself things that he asked me to wrap and gift to him, like a toaster oven that takes up a huge amount of space on the countertop. Everyday when he uses it he tells me how much he loves it. It is such a struggle. When I mentioned to them that I didn't really need all the appliances, they seemed upset. And if I return the stuff, when they are home they will probably ask where it went and be even more hurt. I guess I should have made it clear before Xmas a little more about my goal to be more minimalist.

    • @gunnikr
      @gunnikr Год назад

Honestly, though it’s hard to admit, THEY are being the selfish ones. Gift giving should be about pleasing the person receiving it. It’s a boundary you have to set in a calm manner if you’re ready to set it.

@@gunnikr It's like anything though, always balancing one person's desires against another. Money has always been a cope in my book. I am glad those who really needed can accumulate it through minimalism. Communism, capitalism, fascism and all the isms in the world could not make me consume to stuff I don't need to impress people I don't like.

Over minimalism will lead to a Saint like attitude which in turn will make you self centered down the line.

Still escaping instead of spending the most valuable asset you have wisely. Travel can be fun. Sad when it is only another form of escaping. Spending time wisely is rewarding in itself Buy yourself a new ring and maybe even get the Tesla. Some day you will learn things won't make you happy. Learn how to SPEND time NOT just ways to use it to escape your daily routine
