  • This week in Healthcare Headlines we'll discuss The FBI revealed "Operation Nightingale", an investigation into 7,600 Fake Nursing Degrees that were issued from nursing schools in Florida. Over 2,000 of these nurses were able to pass their NCLEX and become nurses, who are currently working all over the country. But its not just these nurses with scam degrees who are a danger to the public, several doctors and a nurse practitioner have been fined thousands of dollars after encouraging their DoTerra essential oils followers, to treat covid symptoms by ingesting, inhaling, and wearing essential oils. These healthcare providers claimed that DoTerra oils could prevent, but also treat and help alleviate symptoms of the virus. This is illegal, as they have not been shown to do this. Zombie Deer are a thin now. Because of course they are. Utah has decided to ban transgender health care, because they are the villian. And green noise is supposed to help us sleep all of this off.
This article is a great summary of the actual risks and benefits of gender affirming care. I hope you’l read it:

In 42 years as an RN I have worked with two, maybe three, people who were not actually nurses. The one case that was exposed as a fraud was back in the 1980's and the guy was found out to not have any degree remotely related to nursing. More recently I had very strong suspicions about a nurse working with us based upon their shocking lack of knowledge. The person I am thinking of was fired for other reasons and no one ever investigated their license. It is my apprehension that this problem is far more widespread. This is probably the tip of the iceberg. When you get a feeling a peer does not have adequate skills, watch your back and look out for the patients. Imagine being the charge nurse or supervisor responsible for a fake nurse passing medications and assessing patients for safety. This is so terrifying for patients.

I can attest from my own personal experience that having gender affirming top surgery absolutely SAVED MY LIFE.
My province (Ontario) and its healthcare system is very far from perfect. Accessing gender affirming care is a shtshow to varying degrees here. The fight for care is incredibly exhausting, but I'd do it again a million times over because the alternative is frightening - and permanent. 😪
I'm beyond upset and frustrated with the multitude of anti-trans legislation in the US. I feel deeply for anyone living in states where your basic existence is constantly under threat. The hate, ignorance and mis/disinformation is unreal.😔

Liz, the government has been making healthcare decisions for many years. Insurance affects what healthcare we can obtain. Those decisions are made in the legislature. The way hospitals are paid is made in the legislature. Nurses are useless so we put the care they provide in room and board (DRG) those decisions were made in the legislature. I do agree those decisions should not be made by the legislatures. I'm so sick of people with NO qualifications in a field making decisions for that field of work.

Even a lot of your RN-BSN programs are starting to require field experience hours in order to keep their accreditation (CCNE in my case). I ran into this issue when I was enrolled and had to restart cancer treatment, and due to accreditation standards they could not give me an alternative assignment in order to complete my courses.
In terms of hormone blockers most people simply don't understand how they are not what the public think it is. Then we have politicians and certain anti-trans groups that use this lack of education to their advantage and misinform their followers into thinking "trans care= BAD" without critically thinking what is actually happening. There are a lot of drugs/ medications we give children and young adults that have adverse/side effects (oral BC for example?) that we as a society give AYAs because of the benefits outweigh risks and side effects. I really appreciate your stance on this.

    • @NurseLiz

Thats really frustrating that they wouldn't take alternative clinical experiences into consideration. Especially since there are SO many other experiences you could legitimately have that would give you the same if not a better background. Did they ever resolve that? And yeah. the number of people in this comment section who are trained to think trans = bad is honestly terrifying. I don't think people realize these exact same medications are given to children all the time who have growth abnormalities. and literally zero people are up in arms about that. thanks for the encouragement! We struggled to work to PAY for school before and long after as well, attended school 8-430, M-F, and so forth plus labs and clinical hours, consolidation, tears, numerous examinations AND our 'provincials' (depending on the year graduated school), NCLEX and so forth, for many years! I hate how all these people got away with this (which is BEYOND mind blowing) and for so long. There's so many layers of this nonsense to be peeled back.
I'm sorry for the 'real legitimate' nurses who may have attended some of these schools at one time and now they feel somehow, shamed. This MUST be dealt with harshly and immediately to restore the trust in those 'real' RNs and RPNs. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not, hey I want to open a rando business to operate a nursing school with super high tuition and no idea how to do higher Ed.

I am a nurse too and I disagree with you about the transgenderism topic. It seems like kids now days are told to question their gender from a very young age. I believe we as a healthcare system is failing our children. Kids growing up are of course supposed to question who they are without being put under life altering procedures. Now days, our kids are bombarded with tik Tok videos and even school telling them they might not be the gender they are born in and teaching them about drag queens. It's really sad and disturbing seeing this going on in our country. Do you think there is long term studies about these surgeries/puberty blockers? I don't think so..Oh and the "reasearch" now days isn't even true research any more, highly bias and funded by big pharmacutical companies. I used to really like your channel back in the days but it seems like now days you are regurgitating what news medias and big Pharma are pushing. I think as healthcare workers we need to stand up against this craziness its just making the top people richer as they exploit every part of humans. the long term studies on dying are pretty conclusive. If you aren't alive, your bone density or other complications don't matter too much. I hope you do a little reflection on the topic. Particularly as a health care provider. These are not decisions that are made without a lot of reflection and therapy and guidance from a treatment team. Children are not going on tik tok and then deciding to get puberty blockers. Thats a narrative spun by hatred, promoting anti-science legislation that we saw in this utah situation. Really think about it. Do you think parents are just throwing medication at their children the first time they bring up questions surrounding their gender identity? Do you think there isn't countless hours of therapy prior to taking these meds? This is not a rushed decision. This isn't a forced decision. This is an option that saves lives. And helps people feel supported. If you've never known individuals living this, I urge you to change that. You might find that your mind is changed as well.
As for you "liking my channel back in the day", I am no longer OK with staying silent on important matters like I used to.

@@NurseLiz The studies show that there is a higher risk of suicide at every stage of a transgender persons life. I have seen people who have changed their gender and still experiencing suicidal thoughts. The higher suicide rates is not a causality thing, it's a multifaceted issue. Its not that you are not staying silent, I do like that you are voicing your opinion, its just against my core beliefs and that is ok!

      @brittaho2098 Год назад +8

@@NurseLiz I do think there are a lot of kids struggling with depression or other issues who are seeing people promote this to become happy. And if it doesn't solve their problem the suicide risk is high. We already know suicide disproportionate, and likely to be more so IMO.

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  Год назад +19

@@LoveYourNeighbor70 agree that gender affirming care doesn’t negate suicidal ideation or attempt. But it reduces it. And harm reduction should always be an option. This law is cruel because it removes that option for a family to make an informed decision, where they will weigh the risk and benefit and decide for themselves.
I linked a research study that looks at who had increased attempts. And it was the kids who did not receive gender affirming care and those who felt like people in their life didn’t support their choice with their actions. I think social media has made this out to be a rampant thing. When in reality, The number of children receiving things like puberty blockers is small. Schools are not flooded with transgender children. But the narrative of fear that is pushed, is that everyone is being told they should be trans. And schools are overflowing with kids who want to suddenly change gender. And question everything. And that is simply not true.
Removing treatment options from the few who would seek it, and would benefit from it, doesn’t in reality affect most kids. Because most kids don’t want it or need it. So why target them and attack them with legislation like this? For the choices they and their parents and healthcare team think are best? It makes no sense to me.

Now with this story will make all us look even worse. There are talks about Florida leaving the board of education which will possibly hinder the licenses of nurses who graduated here. My guess is that after revoking or annulling their licenses, each state BRN will refer these individuals to their state AG for criminal prosecution. The Feds can get involved only on the federal charges associated with the scam such as wire fraud and conspiracy. Punishment can range from probation to Jail or Prison time. Not to mention the permanent damage to their records which will guarantee that they can never pass another background check for employment again. They're screwed.

It's really manipulative and sad, Nurse, that you characterize arguments of factual reality as "fear" and "hate."
We comment because we're standing up for reality and factual reason--not out of hate or being ill -informed.
Sex is real and unchangeable. It's the only thing that is truly male or female about a person.
Gender theory is actually false. It's a point of view that is ideological, but goes against what is really known about the differences between men and women.
Interests, personality, sincere feelings, dysphoria, and apparel do not give any actual clues about whether a person is actually male or female. Telling children gender is a spectrum is also false, because it's conflating social stereotypes and tendencies with biological reality.
Every child should be given the opportunity to mature fully before intervention to mask their sex characteristics. Preventing natural and healthy puberty in childhood is wrong, and causes a lot of serious problems.
And children should be allowed to have mature mental development into adulthood before any kind of intervention, because people should have a right to comprehend the ramifications of something so physically consequential!

@@skaughtsman @Scott Henderson I always love when transphobes try to say "it goes against science!" when every major medical organization disagrees with you. Maybe, just maybe, the science doesn't agree with YOU.
No one is saying sex isn't real, but our concept of a very rigid sexual dimorphism is very much a social construct. Biological sex is far more complicated than what you learn in 8th grade bio. If you want to talk about sex based social oppression? Absolutely! But to use that oppression as a weapon against another marginalized community is horrific. Also trying to rigidly tie gender (and gender roles, a separate thing from gender) to sex has an equally horrific history that has subjecated an entire sex for centuries.
Even then, gender is a separate characteristic from sex. Gender is also social constructed. We can only work with the tools society gave us. Here's the thing, when I go in public, I get "she" "ma'am" "ladies" and no one seems to bat an eye (and I live in Texas!), so regardless of whatever you think my sex and gender are, people see me and see a woman.
In addition, the term "gender theory" as used by transphobes exists entirely as a way to reduce their own anxieties around targeting a marginalized minority (we're less than 3% of the population!). By pretending being trans is an "ideology" instead of a state of being or characterist, trans-exclusionists are simply in a theoritical debate. They're not hateful bigots targeting people for an unchangeable characteristic, no they're just warrior in the marketplace of ideas. In the same way people argue they aren't antisemitic, they just oppose Global Jewery.
It's "hate the sin love the sinner" but somehow even worse. Trans-exclusion is an ideology, being trans isn't.
As well, you mentioned dysphoria and lumped it in with things like interests is down right insulting! What do you even know of dysphoria? What do you know about the mental pain someone goes through going through the wrong puberty? Feeling so alienated in your body that you wish you could rip your own skin off?
If delaying or blocking puberty is so dangerous, why are transphobes trying to ban it for trans youth and not, say, children going through precocious puberty? Puberty blockers have been in use since the late 1970's and since the 1980's to treat dysphonia in kids! Do you think 40 years of data isn't enough?
Also do you know how difficult it is to even access gender affirming care in this country? It's not like a kid just walks in and they walk out with hormones and a hysterectomy, it requires a lot of evaluation, usually by multiple doctors, and years of tests and evals before you even get there.
Have you meet a single trans people in your entire life?

    2. What do you have to say to the people who later detransition.. oh sorry?
    3. We are talking about affecting their whole lives going forward and there is no going back if they were just confused or going through a phase.
    4. There are way too many variables, mostly that the subject is not fully developed to consider this as a good idea.
    5. Watch a few detransition videos and tell me they were given treatments that helped them. Female to male losing the ability to have children... And done at an age before they really would be seriously considering that as a choice.

There is nowhere near the evidence basis you claim in the video or these comments. It seems you and other providers have decided your position based on politics and not on evidence. Please also read Jamie Reed's affidavit for the state of Missouri regarding her experience as a case manager in a gender clinic for children. This is not healthcare in the sense of making children healthy, and I fear "trans healthcare for minors" will be the medical scandal of our time, quite similar to lobotomies. The justification is even similar e.g. look how happy they are. Let's let kids grow up without intervention in their natural development.

And decreased attempts at self harm.

Therapy is an initial, ongoing, and life long thing for people receiving gender affirming care. And that does not negate that for some, additional support is also needed. And for that minority, they should be able to make an informed decision with their family about what would be best for them.

Interfering with the natural and healthy growth process to physical/sexual maturity is NOT legitimate! But this is especially wrong for children, who do not yet have the maturity to realize that their gender dysphoria is at odds with their actual, unchangeable sex and the real, damaging, life-long ramifications.
We don't intervene to affirm other false ideas children have about themselves. "Gender affirming care" should always be illegal for children--because it's ideological and not based in the real scientific healthcare we should provide to get these children to their natural maturity!!

Even then! Most gender affirming care outside of surgery is fully reversable! Want to end the affect of puberty blockers? Stop taking them. Want to detransition? Stop taking the hormones (really the only lasting effects are deeper voice in trans men and breast growth in trans women). It's far less permanent and long-lasting than a lot of medical treatments a child may need in their life.
Also who appointed you as the arbiter of what is the right way to treat gender dysphoria and the right way for trans people to live there lives? Gender affirming care has some of the highest success rates in the medical world. What we use today for affirming care is older than the polio vaccine!
Gender affirming surgeries have a 2-4% regret rate (which trans minors do not recieve), while knee replacement surgery has a 40% regret rate! Should be we launch state run investigations into that? 300 bills nationally to ban it? Of course fucking not.

Based on what my nurses don't know (I am an ADON) I can see this being true. When I approached senior leadership I am pushed off. It's a tough time for nurses.

My daughter who still lives in Utah states the teachers and parents are very upset with giving $ 32,000 for private/charter schools. Parents can also chose to collect the $ 32,000 per year to home school their children. Deregulating curriculum no standardized testing or checking these children for abuse risk.

Sadly, people are injecting their own false ideologies into phycology and healthcare.
No person is born into the wrong body.
Interests and personality do not determine whether a person is male or female. Sex is real, clear, and unchangeable.
No child should be told that their feelings, however distressing and sincere, have anything to do with whether they're male or female.
Children need to know that their sex is fully, completely factual.
It's gender theory itself that is wholly wrong on this issue! It's gender theory that should be discredited and dismissed by healthcare professionals!

@@skaughtsman Gender dysmorphia is a real condition that many people have. It is obviously not as simple for people with this condition to just accept their DNA gender, or the learned gender roles and characteristics that they are expected. We have to respect and provide the appropriate care needed to children suffering with this condition. That is what the experts are now in disagreement about. Usually these laws are changed according to who is filing lawsuits…… the stakeholders in this should be adult children that were treated during their childhood. No one else can really speak on it first hand.

Disgraceful of you to label recognizing the reality of sex, and sex characteristics as "hate" or "fear." You're revealing the abusive, anti-science nature of "gender theory."
Sex is easily observable and unchangeable. It's not in question, even when children have certain interests, personalities, feelings or sincerely severe dysphoria.
Protecting children from being lied to about their sex, and protecting them from be given drugs, hormones, and surgeries to mask their sex is not "hate," it's informed defense against harmful, ideological experimentation--on children!
It's fully wrong and abusive to lie to children about whether they're really a boy or really a girl, and it's expressly anti-science to do so!
Lying about the realities and permanence of sex is not healthcare. Preventing the natural maturation process of puberty with drugs is not healthcare. Artificially affecting sex characteristics with cross-sex hormone replacement is not healthcare! Removing healthy sex-specific body parts is not healthcare!
Speaking of "deluding" oneself, people in healthcare need to wake up to the anti-science, and severe harms they're perpetrating on children under the guise of "affirmation." Until they do, it needs to be illegal with severe consequences against people who would do these things to children!

Medical conditions are entirely different than life changing medical intervention by young patients choice. I know a 12 yr old down the street, she acts as a Male because it is cool and peer pressure. What happens when she gets trans treatment and she gets older and realizes she no longer thinks that way. Healthcare has no clue what the long term effects would be.

You just think that they just GIVE these treatments? For me, they had to make an evaluation to make sure i had gender dysphoria. You have to ensure you haven't attempted in a year or did anything "bad" or you won't get it. ITS VERY STRICT. That's why most detrasitoners are adults because it's easier for them than kids. Also, rather have a kid who gets treatment than a kid who doesn't and kills themself just saying.

Medical organizations go along with this ideology because of the large sums of money they take in while harming these children.
Children deserve to physically mature in their real, unchangeable sex, naturally and healthfully (unhindered by cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers) until their minds are old enough to consider the ramifications of such interference.
We don't allow children to drink alcohol, smoke, get tattoos, drive, or vote until they're mature adults.
Why would we treat their false ideas about their sex cause us to try to mask their real sex characteristics? Sex is known and real, and 100% unchangeable.
No, medical "gender affirming" efforts are not legitimate, and should always be illegal for minors.

This is scary to think about.. I am a Christian and I myself was born female believe I am female and I don’t believe that I’ve ever even had a thought that hey I might be male, but with that being said, if 84% of people that don’t get support or don’t get the treatment that they need are unaliving themselves I’d rather than be alive and get the treatment that they need then unalive themselves because they don’t get that treatment. And to do that decision in the name of religion or the God that they believe in is ridiculous because I’m pretty sure as a Christian God does not also believe in murdering people and that’s basically what they’re doing. I’m very much for what you said. In the beginning of this topic you don’t have to believe in it, but you don’t have to make a law that hurt somebody else from doing what they believe in. This makes me sick because I am not a Mormon, but Mormons are very much a part of Christianity. In the sense that they do believe in God and for them to have this attitude only turns more people away from the church and the name of some thing that is not in the name of God because this is not God. I’m sorry if this seems like I’m ranting, but I just wanted you to know that there are people that are Christians or that believe in God or religion that do not believe in what Utah is doing.

      Consider this:
Children are being taught false ideas about their true and real sex. They're being taught that efforts to mask their sex, based on their personality and interests might make them happy. But that's not factual--it's based on gender theory. And gender theory is false: we know that personality and interests do not negate whether a person is truly, actually male or female.
But, the unaliving is not improving, after these "affirmation" treatments. There is real evidence that shows it isn't helping mortality rates! What's even more horrific it's that it's known that this "affirmation" is causing serious, extensive physical harm.
It's not ethical to interfere with a child's natural maturity. Children may very well be distressed with strong dysphoria regarding their sex (and yes, extremely so. Although, it's normal for children to be uncomfortable with puberty!). But this is no justification for lying to them to say their sex can be changed, because it can't! They should instead be assured that their interests and personality are perfectly ok for their true gender, which is the same as their sex (even if that personality goes against typical stereotypes).
Children deserve to be able to grow to adulthood, with their functioning sex characteristics, before any treatment interferes! Children do not comprehend the ramifications before they mature!!
And, yes, I'm from Utah, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the nickname Mormon is not one we actually use for ourselves, but it's understandable that it's mistakenly used). And, yes, very much Christian!
Although, I think we can have this determination against gender theory "affirmation" across faiths and creeds. It's a crime against humanity, for sure.

I don’t remember being asked about credit hours, clinical, etc. when I took the NCLeX or having to sign anything. My school sent everything in to approve me to sit for the NCLEX and I was notified when I could take it.
