Speaking of Kids Next Door, Mo did include some Off-Beats references in the show. The Delightful Children from Down the Lane are basically the Populars. In Operation R.E.P.O.R.T, there was a section done in Mo's artistic style.
Sheep in the BIg City was my favorite cartoon when I was 9. I had no idea the same man created both that and The Off-Beats (and was the head writer on Codename: Kids Next Door???) but I can definitely see the resemblence. I guess I have Mo Willems to majorly thank for my sense of humor.
Off Beats was my favorite Kablam series, and Sheep in the Big City was one of my favorite CN series. Mo Williams was underrated. This was your best holiday special.
My son is a huge fan of the Elephant and Piggy books, as well as the Pigeon books. Truth be told, so am I. I'm somewhat ashamed that I didn't know I was already familiar with a lot of Mo Willem's work before the books. Thank you for creating and sharing this!
I can't believe how much stuff Mo has done that I enjoy and I didn't realize it. I own and love You Can Never Find a Rickshaw When It Monsoons, and didn't connect the author to these other things until this video.
What I like about Nick is that sense 1991 there always been one or two cartoons like The Offbeat. For the 90s that was Rugrats, Doug, Rocko & Arnold.'00s that was As Told By Ginger, Mighty B!, & Corneil & Bernie. With 10s that is Loud House, Harvey Beaks, & Sanjay & Craig. That's really cool and I've always had a love for shows like that
I think this is the first thing covered on this channel that I have really clear memories of seeing specifically when it first aired. Heck, might be the first thing I've ever really seen at all.
You know, you should've called this "Mo Willems' Work Profile". Also, fun fact, the guy who yelled actually made a brief cameo in the first Sheep in the Big City episode.
I love this use of a holiday special to highlight a creator that there really isn't a great place in the eventual pantheon of Nick Knacks to highlight.
"While these popular kids walked around in a pack..." Hey that sounds familiar. "[Mo] then became the head writer for the first four seasons of Code Name: Kids Next Door" Ah, there it is.
So that's why the Sheep from Sheep in the big city made a small cameo in KND in the one episode, and why the poplars reminded me of DCFDTL when i saw the clips of this show, to be honest I don't think I have seen these shorts, but I do remember K-blam and other nick shows at the time
I knew that art style looked familiar the second I saw it! Mo Willems does amazing work. Sheep in the Big City especially was a formative show for me--I credit it with how I developed my sense of humor as a child. I've been wanting to do a deep dive into his entire library of animated work for a while, so thanks for this, it gives me a great jumping-off point.
@@ChristopherSobieniak I realize I'm super late with this reply but I had to stop and look that up now that I remembered it.... the darts one was the one I remembered the most!
This is the first time I could hear the intro clearly enough to hear "They nervous, they nebbish, they small". Thought it was "they nervous they never stay small"
That's some great, distinctive work. I was surprised by how many moments in those clips genuinely made me laugh "It was heaven... then the war broke out"
oh man the fact that willems names oskar fischinger and upa as influences in the same quote a.) makes me love him more and b.) makes me want to check out all the other shit he mentions
this show's message is lost in it's depiction of the popular kids. Even though they're clearly the antagonist, they also clearly have all of the social power and emulatable on that ground. Leading to that kid saying "cool" being ostracised serving more as a warning to not step out of line in his position, than as reassurance in the misfit kid position.
I vaguely remember this show. I think I enjoyed it. The dog and the plaid kid feel familiar. Nice little Mo Willems feature--though, I can't imagine the actual Off-Beats entry of Nick Knacks would be much different. It seems like you've covered it thoroughly.
Funny this is my era and I recall liking kablam a lot but this doesn’t seem to be in my memory banks. Great video as usual though. Keep up the good work!
That's pretty funny, I feel like I maybe only vaguely remember this series but I DEFINITELY remember the bongo girl, cool design I guess if it stuck with me Also I kind of LOVED THAT SPECIAL A LOT just from seeing a few second clips of it in this video, I'll have to check it out, what a good vibe
Wow I remember seeing those shorts back then. But I never even knew they had in Valentine's episode existed. But at the same time I'm sort of having conflicting feelings that maybe I did see it at one point :p Do you guys ever give like that because I've been getting that a lot lately

Man, Sheep in the Big City was such an underrated show. Thanks for giving Mo Willems the attention he deserves.
It was made too soon. If it was made now it would have lasted longer than 2 seasons. Same with other shows like Mission Hill.
God, I love the soundtrack of The Off-Beats.

Wow, this is from the 90s... Quite the time jump. (Then again, Nick Knacks is destined to run a long time.)
We still haven't discussed "Sports Cartoons" (or what we called those hippo and cat cartoons)!
I may be an old man if this show ever finished, but at least I have something to look forward too.
Nick Knacks will last about 999 episodes if it includes shows on non-US Nick channels.

@@darktetsuya Yep, these got quite a good rotation on the channel. Reminded myself of this one.

Great Video! 12 out of 10 stars! also Happy Valentine's Day!
Aaaand September is now my favorite cartoon dog ever. Sorry, Hand Banana, you've been usurped.
If any of you have kids in your life, you owe it to them to get some Elephant and Piggie books. They’re the best thing since the Doc.

I just remember there was a parody of Offbeats on Kids Next Door during a Rashomon parody, that maybe written by Mo

Yep, it's a studio situated in Zagreb, Croatia!
I'm going to be sad if there's no mention of The Ranting Swede.
Apparently it didn't happen, but he was from the other show.
IS THAT WHERE SHEEP CAME FROM?
Pretty much.
