Despite Chuvalo’s steel-reinforced concrete chin, you can see how his glacial foot speed made him meat for Ali, Frazier and Foreman. Chuvalo was there to be hit, and he was insulted if you missed him. But what a tough S. O. B.!!
Yes George had power guts and heart but he didnt cut off the ring well with top notch boxers. Marciano got little credit for cutting off the ring but he did it well. Being short not too fast he would get even lower and land punches George never seem to get that part.
As a fighter, I would take Terrell's jabs over Chuvalo's power-punches any day of the week. George deserved, at least, a draw, if not close win. It's like Canadian Boxing Authorities hated their own champion, George Chuvalo, with strong exception to the many Chuvalo fans that filled the Canadian Arena up. George was a well respected fighter here in the US because of his toughness, iron jaw, and never-say-quit outlook on fighting.
I really do like Chavulo roughhouse style, always came to fight win or lose. Obviously had a cast iron chin which he's famous for! But I think he was an underated puncher too, can't remember the exact number but a high percentage of his wins were by knockout or ref stoppage. Great fighter.
Here's something overlooked. George was up in Canada where there were only 2-3 world class heavyweights, Who is he going to spar with on a daily basis to improve his skills? If he went to work for someone like Gill Clancy in New York he'd have been sparring with and learning from top ten heavyweights from all over the world who came to take part in MSG's Friday Night Fights.

I’ve always disliked the way that Terrel fights. Grabbing and hanging on his opponent’s, shamelessly and awkwardly draping himself over the other guy at every opportunity A frustrating guy to watch. Chavalo came to fight and Ernie came to wrestle I think Chavalo was robbed in this one.
28:45 Terrell's chin is outstanding. He looks like Holmes here or at least a Carl Williams. Terrell is way ahead of his time he looks like a modern 80's heavyweight tying up Jabbing and moving. Chuvalo looks a bit like Ingemar plodding for the home run.
The announcer says in the 10th that Terrell has piled up a bunch of pts with the jab. In round 11 and on, Chavalo almost completely abandon's the Jab. He's certainly got a very questionable lead at that point if he did. I personally believe anyone scoring this has to have about 2 rounds minimum even. I have Terrell 144. Chavalo 143. That was being very liberal with Chavalo giving him some even rounds. Terrell won. Its close i gave Chavalo some rounds because of holding. But chavalo has to have far far less punches thrown, no matter what Terrell is in better shape. If George threw a regular Jab he would have taken some rounds but he was out of gas in my option. Last round i have as even.
Ok, I just got done scoring this fight. I'm from NY and scored by rounds Chuvalo 7 Rds to terrell 4 and 4 Rds even. The even Rounds were ones where Terrell was running and holding but on the other hand Chuvalo was just stalking and not doing much punching. If the judges gave those four to Ernie it would have been 8-7 terrell but that is a lot of derrerence to the "Champ" to swallow. No harm was done because George ended up getting the Ali match in Toronto. How do you guys get 146 when they said there are only 5 pts per round? THat is a 75 pt max.
It wasn't exactly Rocky vs Apollo Creed, except for the fictional title part, so the world thanks you for your sacrifice of time you'll never get back.
And something I learned the first year I started amateur boxing in the P.A.L. in the gym sparring sessions is if you are boxing a taller opponent you get low and come in out of a crouch and it’s a good way to box all the time because when you punch up you are punching with your whole body including your legs. And you have much more power than just your upper body and usually results in a telling blow or combination which is even better. Throwing combinations is a key to not getting hit also . Like when he parried the jab he should have thrown a left hook at the same time and followed up with a right hand. . Simeltaineously your opponent doesn’t even see it coming.
Heavyweight Title? Ha. No one paid any attention to the WBA in those days, it was comprised of mostly foreigners. NYS and The Ring were the last word on who was Champ and The Ring stood behind Ali when States were taking his title away. The WBA stopped recognizing Liston (Who beat everyone) because he signed a rematch clause with Floyd. How ridiculous! Terrell went on tv shows claiming he was the "real Champ" but he was the one chasing after Ali for a shot. The WBA only gained credibility when Ali was stripped of his licsense and he announced he was giving up boxing while he fought his draft case in court. The WBA siezed the opportunity to stage a tournament with eight fighters battling for Ali's crown. It was televised over a period of months by "Wide World of Sports" giving them even more legitemacy. Frazier opted to go his own way as he was not quite ready and his Mgt wanted to pick his opponents. MSG realized they'd been scooped and later staged there own title tournament featuring Frazier v Buster Matthis. Only NYS recognized that fight as for the Title but more fans recognized the WBA Tournament. After all, Frazier was invited to participate but declined. The title was "unified" once again when Frazier fought Jimmy Ellis but the groundwork had been laid for today's alaphabet soup mess. The Tournament was exciting if you were a fan of one of the eight as you didn't have to wait until your guy got a title shot. I felt that Chuvalo should have been included despite his downward spiral due to his experience
Chuvalo is one of my favs., but I do think Terrel fought the fight he needed to by constant use of a good, very good jab, and not letting George get off by holding, which fans may groan about, but there are many fights won by holding when an opponent like George, has a damn good chin and power. Terrel neutralized Chavalo's power to body punch by hanging him up, and through the jab. Chuvalo stood as he always did, square in front of Terrel, and allowing him to rack up the points with his jab. George never used lateral movement, and took enormous punishment, more than necessary, but that was the fighter he was. He thought he had to take a lot to give some. Terrel's holding was just wise strategy, and although technically a foul, it's been used effectively habitually in boxing, with some warnings, point deductions, and even calling the fight in favor of the one being tied up and hugged too much. The ref here was very forgiving in favor of Terrel, but George didn't want on points, or strategy, Terrel did. Ol' George is till with us in his 80's, I believe, still not going down. Ya have to love George, what a courageous fighter.
Chuvalo did not throw enough punches to win the fight. Terrell hit him at will with the left. And I deducted points for the repeated rabbit punches Chuvalo threw. The rules are the rules. If you don't knock a man down or out you have to count the scoring punches no matter how aggressive the other guy is. For every good hard shot Chuvalo connected with, Terrell hit him 5 times. Terrell never went down so he took Chuvalo's hard shots and Terrell cut Chuvalo under both eyes visually showing that he hurt George. Judges notice that and rarely vote for a guy that looks like his face has been through a meat grinder. 147- 141 Terrell.
