When this is done with real equipment there is always packing after the charge is put in the hole. If you could put packing in the hole after the steal rod is inserted the pressure might be directed into the rock. Without the packing it looks like it comes back up the hole and into the mat. Just sayin.
Yeah it definitely looses some pressure back out through the hole. But The hole is only slightly bigger than the steel rod. So would be hard to add any packing. And if it was packed tight it would put a lot more upward force on the rod. Probably would still be ok. But I’m not sure at what point the steel rod would become a projectile. There’s some room for improvement for sure though.
Yeah I’d never attempt it without one. Serves two purposes. First. Stops the whole thing from being blown back through your hand and through your head. Second. Even with the fairly tight “bushing” through the blasting mats. There is still a surprising amount of debris that blows up around the rod.
That looks like decomposing granite…I have a lot of it on my property and run into the same issues. Gonna try this out and see how it goes with a scaled up version with packing.

What to mark for the percussion cartridges?

Invest in a spud bar.
make the 9mm version
you have earned your 'hillbilly badge' with this one.... pretty decent results I'd have to say. Proof of concept... now scale it up!!!!
Does that top layer have a kind of pissy smell to it?😊
lol. I didn’t really notice that. But now that I’m thinking about it. Maybe a slight smell.
