@@r3tsuu I wanted to trust you, but it’s a bit hard knowing that I’ve had friends (you know, like real friends outside of my house that I hang out with and see and talk to, etc) that used to have that mindset when it came to their love of anime and Japan…or rather how they assumed it would be. Ironically my first exposure to the term "anime tourist" was this video. I'm never on twitter so likely why I hadn't heard of this 'til now. I loved watching this and hearing a little bit about your background! What a cool experience to live in another country for a few years. Also, we are SO missing out on this manga museum. Twitter's "Anime Tourist" is a new term we really dont need in this community. Its about time we understand that usually people in general and also people who love different genre of Anime will have different perspectives about the anime community.
I can't believe the weebs are having their own version of the word poser like elitism wasn't a big reason why most people didn't really get into anime up until some years ago no matter how much people say it's bc outsiders found it too nerdy

I deeply relate to what you said about standing out while wanting to rather blend in. A common Black nerd girl experience perhaps :') Also LOVE this video, beautiful clapback 👏
This is absolutely glorious. They would probably call me a tourist as well. I've been a weeb since before that was even a word (30 years now!) and I have lived in Japan. I was the librarian for my local college anime club back in the late '90s when I was a teenager. You know, back when most everything we were able to get was VHS fansubs. 😂 The type of folks who would call people 'anime tourists' have just decided to be literal children.

the problem with making an interest of yours into your entire personality is that you will inherently start to take any criticism of that interest as a personal insult. honestly it's so wild to me that in my lifetime anime has gone from being seen as so lame and weird that you'd get bullied if you enjoyed it too much, to so mainstream and ubiquitous that now there are people who bully others for "not enjoying it enough". anyway, i hope you keep making your videos. if these people were bigger anime fans than you, you would think they'd have the passion and conviction to make full-fledged response videos to your opinions ala 2008 anitube. but instead they just get mad on twitter lol
Great video, what a mature way to handle online hatred. Don't know why people would target you with these weird comments but you handled it with style and compassion. :D
the people who call folks they disagree with tourists are probably the same ones who think all queer japanese media is "western pandering" or "localization gone bad" because in their minds japan must be monolithic, conservative, and full of people who agree with them
I remember seeing that in discussions of I’m in Love with the Villainess. It’s a yuri where the main character is isekai’ed into a dating sim but she doesn’t care for the boys. In the third episode there’s a scene where she discusses homophobia and I saw a couple of people get butthurt over that. It’s so telling since the premise is obviously about a gay relationship (it’s in the title and it’s not subtle at all), so the people complaining after watching the THIRD episode are the people who sexualize lesbians but don’t actually care about them as people.
I've also seen that with one of Tatsuki Fujimoto's works, Fire Punch where one of the characters is a FTM trans man who explains the pain he feels from dysphoria and due to the power of regeneration, could never be able to get reassignment surgery because of it and is doomed to be in a body he doesn't resonate with and people debated back and forth about how this was probably a mistranslation or the woke mob was reading too into it and go out of their way to misgender him bc he goes through the same sort of resentment a lot of trans people have where they just let people not use their preferred pronouns to avoid having to constantly explain themselves. Just because a country has conservative values doesn't mean queer people or leftist ideals just never exist there.
not only dose this tick me off but Japan actually did do queer stuff better then the west. like look at the shitty English dub of sailor moon in comparison to the Japanese one from the original 90s . not that , then what about Utena , the most legendary of them that later on inspired Steven universe despite the latter's small flaws and Cartoon Network treatment of that show that was just dragging its feet on supporting that show. it kind of just proves to me that these people are really that blinded by rage of anything that is not catered to them , even revisionism of the history of anime and manga or even so paranoid of anything they like being called bad due to being so tied to there identity , maybe even a mixture of all three. its part of the reason I like Anime Feminist due to that site just focused one making an area of the internet and fans of the medium to avoid criticism for the stuff that is anime .
As someone who's a fan of literally all genres of anime from the wholesome, the cute, the grotesque, the straight up objectionable. I feel like the internet has polarized people's minds to such an extreme that they cannot tell the difference between a critique and an outright call for banning the content and arresting anyone who enjoys it. Overall I think its often used as a defensive accusation, people feel like there's newcomers coming into the anime community and trying dictate what's acceptable and what's not. But I don't think people should be so worried. The genres that a vocal minority find extremely objectionable have been around as long as anime has been a distinct art form, they're not going anywhere and enough people like them where worst case scenario the people wanting to push that stuff out would just wall themselves off from the larger community into their own little sterile corner. Obviously I know the term tourist is used for other reasons that are even more stupid but that's just what comes to mind when I hear the term.
same here. I like slice of life, shonen, horror and sometimes ecchi. Ecchi animes get alot of hate especially with the recent gushing over magical girls when the trailer dropped. They get defensive because people would come into their space and demand stuff like this to be gone from existence.
I essentially live under a rock as far as anime fandom, so I figured that this 'anime tourist' term was some sort of gatekeeping term from the title. Excellent critique of people who don't understand that you can have a different opinion and that you don't have like everything you consume media-wise. The International Manga Museum is so cool! My friends and I did the arts & crafts project where you could make your own greeting card and it was a blast. Plus, the gift shop - I got Gokinjo Monogatari file folders and a CLAMP plate made by a Kyoto Ceramics Company. I've always wanted to go to a con or comiket but it would require more planning in addition to usual vacation planning. I'd need assistance to navigate a comiket and someone would have to drag me away from spending all my money on things I can't read very well either! Can't wait to see your next video and keep up the nuance content!
Nice video! Try not to let the people on Twitter get to you, unfortunately people can just be really extreme and defensive on social media. I don't watch a ton of romance anime these days but seeing your videos makes me want to and brings back fond memories of shows I like. Stuff like "his and her circumstances", "kimi ni todoke", "5 centimeters per second", and "ouran high school host club". Its awesome that you spent so much time in Japan! I'm going back to Kyoto for my second trip soon and your video has made me want to add some anime things to my up until now mostly non-anime trip plans.
This was such a great way to tackle these difficult online interactions. Definitely was not preachy. There's so much nuance that needs to be considered when looking at media, but people aren't always willing to engage in that way. It really is okay to watch the same thing and come away with different opinions. And we should feel compelled to share and discuss that, even if it doesn't change our feelings necessarily. Please keep the videos coming. They are great and add perspective to this media that we enjoy.
Wow this is such a great video I just love your content so much. Good advice on checking your posture while watching Anime on your computer or phone. One of those devices from Amazon sounds great.😁
You like the convenience stores? If so, have you read “Convenience Store Woman” by Sayaka Murata? It’s wonderful and it’s a great window into one of the murkiest parts of Japanese culture that we “tourists” don’t often see. And don’t worry, it has a happy ending - at least _I_ think it’s a happy ending. It’s a great fun read and I think everyone here will really enjoy it.
A little detail I love about your videos is your book stand in the back. It's always either a perfect manga pick for the video topic on hand, or I've never heard of it and I'm like- "Whatcha readin' 👀👀👀" It's a fun little touch that I always appreciate!
The people who use this new term of "anime/manga tourists" need a gentle reminder that at the end of the day all we are doing is watching TV and reading books nothing special. See this is what happens when your entire personality is wrapped around the media you consume.
Ah yes, gatekeeping. Because you can never have a casual enjoyment of any medium. You must watch at least 100 anime to be allowed to watch and discuss anime
It is obvious, they're just ignorant on purpose. Tourist in this case is someone coming in and desiring to change the hobby, instead of enjoying it for what it is. Gatekeep your hobbies, and keep the weirdos out.
I respect you for choosing the funniest way to respond and enjoying yourself simultaneously. Also, if they wish to call your otaku card into question they can write a letter in Japanese and send it to my office so I may lecture them. Carry on, you are doing Excellence here. :)
This was such a flex 😂 I never got this term honestly. It reeks of terminally online minded people. And you showed these idiots by touching grass in a wonderful, educational way.
So this is the more defined version of weeb, japonphile, but yes i see what you mean but id take tourist as a positive look. How else am i gonna be a traveler without having some interest albeit one out look to the country until i go?
I figured this was your way of handling the online negativity. I'll say this, I subscribed to your channel because I don't see enough black representation in my feed about the things that I enjoy. I enjoy manga/anime and really enjoy the way your put your thoughts out there. The people who are saying those things will likely never stop but neither should you, your work is valued and appreciated!
What I think I find most exasperating about the "anime tourist" canard is that it flattens disagreement to something which is a question of expertise and sincerity rather than a difference of opinion which can be argued against in good faith, which I think prevents anyone from coming to any more nuanced understanding. You mentioned, for instance, feeling that some of your statements regarding Akihito Tsukushi in your Made in Abyss video might have been overly harsh, and frankly, as a fairly beleaguered fan of the series who has seen people say some *really* horrible things about both its creator and its fans, there were aspects of that video which definitely rubbed me the wrong way and I think could have been handled better. But that said, I don't think that any of what you said in that video makes you some kind of "fake fan," or that a "real fan" of the medium needs to be 100% comfortable with or approving of everything which they encounter in the medium, and I think that denying oneself or others the opportunity to speak frankly about a work or even a genre's more divisive, pernicious or transgressive aspects is really limiting. What's more, on the whole, the kind of people who throw out the "tourist" accusation more often than not strike me as having their own deeply skewed ideas of what is or is not "acceptable" within anime which are often deeply ignorant of the conversations being had about those subjects by actual Japanese artists and fans, imposing an Orientalist idea of what Japanese-ness is onto Japanese art, culture and people, and I think that's really gross and presumptuous. (Granted, I don't think that reactionaries have a monopoly on troubling Orientalism in the anime fan space by any means, but that's its own conversation.) In any case, always cool to see folks talk about their experiences in Japan. :3 Even way before I got into anime, back when I was a little kid, I've wanted to visit someday. P.S. Having spent a lot of time in music circles and been exposed to some of the mind-blowing snobbery surrounding certain niche styles, particularly extreme metal, I am pretty sure that "anime tourist" is just an appropriation of the concept of the "genre tourist," a snarky term levelled at those who are thought to dabble in a particular genre without a particular depth of knowledge or understanding while pretending to know what they're talking about. To give the snobs the tiniest bit of credit, this does sometimes happen, especially when a niche scene becomes very hip quickly and suddenly, and I can understand feeling encroached upon as a more established fan in that context; but at the same time, this sort of attitude is often part and parcel to some really ugly gatekeeping and apologia for bad attitudes within a subculture which have seen more exposure and are receiving often warranted criticism from both newer fans and older fans emboldened to speak up. In that way, the people making these claims within music and anime fandom are often quite similar.
Nice video!! To be honest it feels like you are a bit unique for your generation in the way you actually went on the journey, instead of reading about it online. In which you have wonderfully shared with us your own perspective and experience in this video. Years ago I visited Japan with the outline of my trip being based on visiting the filming locations of Akira Kurosawa films. I did plenty of other stuff as well. Enjoy the journey! Thanks for the share :)
The usual suspects, I assume. People really just need to let others live their lives. Being a gatekeeping ass doesn't make you special. I commend your response here in leaning into the tourism aspect 😅. Definitely an ambition of mine to go to Japan some day, so some of the spots you went to will be noted. We should make shirts that say "Anime Tourist" on them. Would rock that.
This entire video is like one massive flex on the haters. You lived 3 years in Japan before taking this trip? You just added an additional trip on top of your 3 year experience that the haters will never have. Very impressive. 😂😂😂 I visited Japan in 2016 and it was long before I even thought of making videos on youtube…so I didn’t get a lot of video footage. 🙁 But I had a wonderful time…I went to the Ghibli Museum as well and it is beautiful. The little theatre in there was adorable. I also went to the Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe, which had surprisingly good food. 😊
some anime fans are just gatekeepy and bitter for no reason. your video did not cone across as preachy at all and I'm happy to see that you had so much fun in Japan.
it is actually, it is literally gatekeeping, anime tea and u people are trying to push out tropes that you find weird in fiction, aka gatekeeping anime. hypocrites
Yay. Good for you for overcoming the trolls. Everyone is entitled to their own perspective. Great video goddess. Also I really want to go there one day but more to understand cultures. I just like traveling.💪🏾🙏🏾👏🏾✌🏾
Respect the already established community. It wont change for your own intrests and ideals. If you dont like niche, stay out of niche. That is mostly what people mean when they say "anime tourist". People who try and critisize and find "faults" in the community are just ignorant. Dont try and shove yourself into a community and then be shocked when your opinions doesnt align with theirs.
@retsuri so like... just don't act so butthurt over ppl's opinions. U talk of culture yet u have no idea how many Japanese people may hold the same opinion themselves
@lolzu never did I say japanese people. I meant otaku/anime culture as a whole. Criticising personal hobbies/intrests is so dumb, If you dont like it then don't watch it. That's it. No need to shove your opinions into it and try to change it based on what you like. It's not just people's "opinions", it's people being ignorant and dumb.
@retsuri there's nothing wrong w/ anime in general. there's a reason why people get into it... but having that as an excuse for people to not have different opinions is bullshit. There's so much trash anime out there, PLUS how companies (ex. MAPPA) treat their employees would be considered "culture". In your logic, the animators being abused by such companies shouldn't change for the better because "opinions shouldn't change the culture" Please realise how stupid your take is. Like you genuienly have to NEVER complain about anything again if you're saying shit like "don't like don't watch". If you're disappointed by a movie, don't like don't watch.
Been enjoying your videos for a while, but I rarely (if ever) comment. I just wanted to say that I appreciate your passion, your well-researched analysis and your willingness to criticize what needs to be criticized despite the vitriol people throw your way. And you don't need to clarify that things or just your opinions or that yours aren't the only ones that matter. Anyone who thinks every opinion needs to come with such disclaimers is being deliberately uncharitable.
'Anime tourist' is the dumbest friggin' phrase I've heard in ages. I first watched anime when the '78-'80 series Gatchaman was aired in my youth, but I'd probably be considered one for finding Dragonball dull as dirt.
I love your videos! I never heard of "anime tourist" outside of the way you use it. The fact is, people don't like hearing opinions from people who disagree with them and unfortunately they (these mean commenters) choose not to consider how aren't being made to agree with you. A lot of Japanese people don't like anime for the same problematic tropes you call out. I think the people harassing you online are very immature. You don't need to state that no one has to agree with your opinion, it's the unspoken bottom line of listening to someone's critique. And you offered great advice about how negative people and haters will always leave comments because that's how they are, and does not define you. ❤
as if anime tea channel doesn't do that? lol people like anime tea are trying to gatekeep anime and push out fictional tropes and stuff they dislike, whether or not it's weird to people doesn't matter, her and anyone who agrees with doing that while calling those other people gatekeepers, is a hypocrite.
@@IrisThatOneGothMfno she really doesn't. If you think she does, you don't understand the word gatekeeping. And blindly consuming shit without reflecting and aknowledging its problematic parts is not something someone should strive for.

non conventionally pretty girls always get mean comments, people are like this, will it ever change? who knows, many parents never teach their kids how to interact with other people because they themselves fall into the mainstream way of being
"Will it ever change? " It will change when people let go of the desire to suck their self-esteem from others like some emotional c*nnibal. Only unevolved cavemen do that. I think those who feign some kind of nuance are particularly guilty of this.

Thanks for the video. Gatekeeping attitudes need to be retired. The scenery you filmed over there was really lovely. Also thank you for reminding viewers that Japan is more than their media. Someday I hope to make a pilgrimage to Japan to visit the grave of my grandfather and the last Tower Records. Edit: I also wonder if there's an equivalent of "Paris Syndrome" that anime fans who go to Japan might experience.
People call you a tourist because you're more or less doing what people on twitter do when they don't like something. It's not voicing your distatste for something, but rather you wanting to change the medium into something for your benefit. While it's completely okay and understandable to want to feel comfortable when partaking in a hobby you enjoy, if you don't like something it's easier to just move on rather than try to change an entire medium. If you don't like how a certain anime, manga, etc is then you could always make your own and target it towards people who feel the same as you. Now I wouldn't call you a tourist because you have an channel dedicated to anime so I can see your love for it and that proves that you aren't just into it because it is popular or trendy though seeing as how you voiced your distaste for Nagatoro san without watching it, apart from a few clips, it really doesn't help your case
Honestly tourism sounds like the wrong word in that case. Tourist generally don't want to change the what ever it is they are engaging with and will just move on if the experience is not for them. It is passionate, true fans, that might want to change what it is they are a fan of for the better.
Bruh I like Nagatoro but don't defend those assholes harrasing her and ruining anime for everyone else. Those are the dickheads ruining the community, not an anime youtuber who's not interested in another Ecchi highschool anime.
I do think it should be expected for people to still be able to critique media that they like and it is true a lot of anime tropes that may have been funny or salacious way back when it was niche seem more weird and honestly kind of creepy in hindsight, esp stuff like teacher-student relationships, lolicon and sexual harassment/being violent to someone you have a crush on being played off as comic relief. Treating it like a baseline for the medium as a whole is a disservice to animanga that don't fall into the same pitfalls people who've falled out of seasonal anime or people who critique it talk about and having a 'If you don't like it then don't watch it' approach to actually problematic aspects of media is so reductive if you ask me, especially when a lot of these tropes do influence irl behaviour, anime cons and how female cosplayers get treated being a shining example and the wholesale fetishization of east asian women being another.
People seems to forget that anime is made in Japan and aimed at Japanese people, not foreigners. So its weird for foreign fans (mostly US) to says "this anime is bad because it doesn't follow 'our sensibilities'".
@@BenetteG For sensibilities, I think you have a point. Part of what I like about anime is it has different sensibilities and culture to what I am used to. For morals (i.e. the message of the story) I think it is totally reasonable to call it bad because you consider the message is immoral. That doesn't mean it should be banned, but it should be criticised if its message is bad.

honestly it's so wild to me that in my lifetime anime has gone from being seen as so lame and weird that you'd get bullied if you enjoyed it too much, to so mainstream and ubiquitous that now there are people who bully others for "not enjoying it enough".
anyway, i hope you keep making your videos. if these people were bigger anime fans than you, you would think they'd have the passion and conviction to make full-fledged response videos to your opinions ala 2008 anitube. but instead they just get mad on twitter lol
Being passionate about something is not making your entire personality.
I'M SO SORRY ABOUT THESE GOONS. I LOVED THE VLOG!
Sadly this is probably true
not only dose this tick me off but Japan actually did do queer stuff better then the west. like look at the shitty English dub of sailor moon in comparison to the Japanese one from the original 90s . not that , then what about Utena , the most legendary of them that later on inspired Steven universe despite the latter's small flaws and Cartoon Network treatment of that show that was just dragging its feet on supporting that show.
it kind of just proves to me that these people are really that blinded by rage of anything that is not catered to them , even revisionism of the history of anime and manga or even so paranoid of anything they like being called bad due to being so tied to there identity , maybe even a mixture of all three. its part of the reason I like Anime Feminist due to that site just focused one making an area of the internet and fans of the medium to avoid criticism for the stuff that is anime .
Deliberately mistranslating lines IS BAD LOCALIZATION YOU COLONIZER
Loved the little tourism bit! Great commentary as usual.
OHH THE TEA IS PIPING HOT TODAY 👏👏
An amazing video as per usual! I
I essentially live under a rock as far as anime fandom, so I figured that this 'anime tourist' term was some sort of gatekeeping term from the title.
One of those devices from Amazon sounds great.😁
Great approach… I learned a lot Thanks for dropping your experience.
It's always either a perfect manga pick for the video topic on hand, or I've never heard of it and I'm like- "Whatcha readin' 👀👀👀"
It's a fun little touch that I always appreciate!
a lot of people who cry tourist cant even go to japan😂
lol poor
The people who use this new term of "anime/manga tourists" need a gentle reminder that at the end of the day all we are doing is watching TV and reading books nothing special. See this is what happens when your entire personality is wrapped around the media you consume.
The way you gracefully shut them up
Ah yes, gatekeeping. Because you can never have a casual enjoyment of any medium. You must watch at least 100 anime to be allowed to watch and discuss anime
@@user-gj6ft2kc5dare you talking about the gatekeepers or the people who get called anime tourist?

It is obvious, they're just ignorant on purpose. Tourist in this case is someone coming in and desiring to change the hobby, instead of enjoying it for what it is.

This was such a flex 😂 I never got this term honestly. It reeks of terminally online minded people. And you showed these idiots by touching grass in a wonderful, educational way.
I adore your channel
So this is the more defined version of weeb, japonphile, but yes i see what you mean but id take tourist as a positive look. How else am i gonna be a traveler without having some interest albeit one out look to the country until i go?
So there IS a reason all the isekai protags recreate Japanese food, their food really is that good that you'd miss it
I figured this was your way of handling the online negativity.
(Granted, I don't think that reactionaries have a monopoly on troubling Orientalism in the anime fan space by any means, but that's its own conversation.)
In any case, always cool to see folks talk about their experiences in Japan.
Thank you for the video!
Nice video!! To be honest it feels like you are a bit unique for your generation in the way you actually went on the journey, instead of reading about it online. In which you have wonderfully shared with us your own perspective and experience in this video.

Would rock that.
that is ironic considering what the person behind 'the anime tea' channel does.
This entire video is like one massive flex on the haters. You lived 3 years in Japan before taking this trip? You just added an additional trip on top of your 3 year experience that the haters will never have. Very impressive. 😂😂😂
I visited Japan in 2016 and it was long before I even thought of making videos on youtube…so I didn’t get a lot of video footage. 🙁 But I had a wonderful time…I went to the Ghibli Museum as well and it is beautiful. The little theatre in there was adorable. I also went to the Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe, which had surprisingly good food. 😊

Respect the already established community. It wont change for your own intrests and ideals. If you dont like niche, stay out of niche.
That is mostly what people mean when they say "anime tourist".

In your logic, the animators being abused by such companies shouldn't change for the better because "opinions shouldn't change the culture"
Please realise how stupid your take is.

Anime creeps and maladjusted in society
