It generally mirrors the screen on the iPad but when you are using an app like Netflix, it will play full screen. I'm guessing other apps will do the same.
This is mini HDMI. It looks like a smaller version of the full sized HDMI. Micro HDMI looks roughly similar to micro USB. It is often found on GoPro cameras.

The volume even though at 100% with an iPad watching Netflix is very quiet, to the point i need the subtitles on.

It is silver similar to the color of an older Macbook or iMac.
After you attach it to the ipad does the view fill the whole screen or is it just a mirror of the screen of the ipad?

You can use it directly with an iPad if the iPad has a USB-C port. For older iPads, you would need a Lightning to HDMI adapter.
