    Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene that has numerous applications. The best known brand name of PTFE-based formulas is Teflon by Chemours.[2] Chemours is a 2015 spin-off of DuPont Co.,[3] which discovered the compound in 1938.[2] - Source : Wiki. You are doing a great job there, Andy ! I love your videos and appreciate your work and help very much !

    Hello Andy. I have a 503 and the vertical shaft has become very tight to the point where the machine is unusable. Would you have some helpful and encouraging tips for me? Thx from Ontario Canada

      5 1/2 years later I see I neglected to show oiling the upper and lower bushings for the vertical shaft. Whew!!
      Not sure how you know it is only the vertical shaft that is very tight, but OK. If you take a look at another video and watch from 34:30 thru 35:08 you'll see where to oil the vertical shaft. ruclips.net/video/Sn2XD4EILFM/видео.html
      All oiling points are shown in the original Instruction Manual that is available for free from Singer: www.singer.com/search/support?title=503
      You can also get a free copy of the original Service Manual that shows the oiling along with almost every possible adjustment on the machine: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf
      My Model 503A Playlist has 20 more videos for working on this model: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX
      The reason I mentioned I was not sure how you determined the problem is the vertical shaft is b/c all the moving parts move in sync and if one part is stuck then they all are. If the needle bar is stuck with dried oil in the lower bushing then none of the shafts, or hook, etc. will move.
      Best of luck and thanks for watching my channel.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thx for the reply. It’s nice to hear back from a RUclipsr. Everything was tight tight tight. The vertical shaft was very difficult to remove. After a thorough cleaning and oiling she is now running like the day she came off the factory floor. But I had to readjust everything from A to Z and back again. I am in awe at your knowledge of these old machines. I am equally in awe at how they built these complex machines without the aid of computers or assembly robotics.

    Hi Mr.Andy, I have a question concerning the lubrication of my sewing machine. I noticed that the worm shaft of my machine drives 2 cam gears which are made of plastic (Nylon?), however, the manual makes no mention of lubricating them or the shaft. I was wondering if I should leave 'em alone or use a little bit of Triflow clear grease on them? Best regards.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 лет назад +5

      Hi, Maxine and thanks for this question. Personally, I would leave them alone. Evry Singer Repairman I have asked this question to told me "NO GREASE on plastic gears, only metal to metal gears and no oil on any kind of gears". On newer machines, I have seen metal worm gears mated to plastic gears and they have a "Waxy" brown substance on them. When I asked about that situation I was told if it is clean then leave it alone and if it is filthy remove it, or most of it and then leave it alone. Before I was told that I did clean the area with 25% Krud Kutter and bushed a very light coat of Tri-flow grease on them. The machine is ok after about 7 years so it apparently did no harm. I have not done it since then. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
      Thanks very much for watching and commenting.

    Hi Andy, I am restoring my 401 but I am not removing everything at once. How should I clean the outside of my machine to make it nice and clean. I’m going to remove all the plates on the front of the machine. I will put the wax on the clean machine at the end, but I don’t know what to really clean this machine with. It’s really dirty on the outside. I don’t want to ruin the paint.

      If you don't want to wash with the Krud Kutter, then I would use a soft cotton washcloth and warm soapy water. My favorite dish detergents are Lemon Joy and the original Palmolive because they also cut grease so well. You don't need to apply a lot of pressure, but let the soapy water "float" the dirt into the cloth. Rinse the cloth and repeat. I have used rubbing alcohol also and q-tips on stubborn spots. Some people also use plain cheap sewing machine oil (mineral oil) What ever you use put plastic or newspaper down and work on small areas at a time and don't hurry.

      A friend just reminded me that some people use a product called GO JO to clean sewing machines also. No harm to the paint; even the old black Singers. I have not used it myself.

      Andy Tube I will use the Krudd Cutter. I didn’t know if I could really use it on the painted surface .Are use the 50-50 solution of water and cleaner. And leave it on about two minutes. Does that sound about right?

    I have a Singer 9020 and it has nylon gears. The original grease on it looks like not so clean Vaseline, but I'm sure it wasn't that. Would you know what the proper grease to use for nylon gears?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 лет назад +1

      The only time I put grease on plastic is if the plastic gear mates with a metal gear. This is usually where the worm gear on the steel horizontal arm shaft mates to the plastic gear on the bottom of a camstack. In that case, I use the same grease I use on metal gears, Tri-Flow Synthetic Grease: www.triflowlubricants.com/product/synthetic-grease
      Tri-Flow states that "Our grease is compatible with most rubbers and plastic and stands up to extreme temperatures (-10° - +400° F)."
      ON the few more modern machines I have restored, where the gears are plastic-on-plastic, I do not put any kind of lubricant.

    I have evidently put oil on the gears. Is there a way to clean this? What should I do now?? Will it ruin the machine?!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 года назад

      I would definitely remove the oil before using it. I use Krud Kutter cleaner and degreaser to clean my machines as shown in many of my videos. You can use whatever you need to use to get it off though. Brush them first with old toothbrushes, etc. to get off what you can, then start using alcohol, kerosene, maybe naphtha. Get off as much as you can and then use a good grease like in my video. With oil on the gears, you can't get grease on them b/c it won't stick at all. Oil on gears makes them run very, very hot and it is bad for them and bad for the handwheel gear, like damaging bad. Don't panic, you are not the first person to have oil on gears by any means. You can clean it off and apply grease and the problem is solved. No one will ever know 😊

    So what's wrong with lithium grease for this application, I gots to ask ? ? ?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 лет назад

      I gots to say I have scraped and chiselled old, dry lithium grease of too many metal gears. It was a real pita. I'm sure there are applications where lithium grease is a good idea, but IMO not on a sewing machine. TRI-FLOW grease will not harden into a concrete type substance, and it adheres better and longer to the gears. You could say lithium "pales" in comparison to TRI-Flow for sewing machine gears in this "writers" opinion. Thanks for watching Andy Tube.

    • @palewriter1856
      @palewriter1856 6 лет назад

      Thanks, Andy. 'Twas just a matter of "can't remember what I did w/ my TriFlow," and it was about gone anyway, coupled w/ the readily present can of lithium spray. Your word is good enough for me, so thanks for taking the time to RE!!!! Pulled the 500a out of hibernation to repair back yard umbrella shades - and although I ran them through the wash first, they still produced such dust and fluff that the poor thing now deserves a good cleaning. Good, old workhorse, of course!
      Oh - my little cranial assistant just brought it to my attention where I last saw that TriFlow: out in the pool shed. That little guy is amazingly helpful - SOMETIMES.

      Welcome! The 500A is a good old workhorse for sure. A good, strong choice for repairing umbrella shades. It's that time of year for relaxing in the shade in a backyard. Thanks for the reply, I was worried you would us that lithium, but now I know. Whew.

      So you weren't at all worried that I might go out to the garage and get a squeeze of the moly grease in my grease gun for the automotive use? I still remember a pretty convincing demo of straight grease vs moly-tainted under extreme pressures from decades ago in SHOP class. Yeah, in my day they still offered such - before the day when every parent decided (way ahead of time, and disregarding any natural inclinations) that THEIR kid was going to college after a WHITE-collar job with an impressive title. But Mike Rowe covers this far better than I, who am digressing and wasting even more of YOUR valuable time....
      Actually, I have some light silicone/PTFE stuff for pool plumbing fittings - probably the closest thing I have on hand.
      Thanks again, Andy!
