VH1 IDs 1990 by JAM

  • In November 1990 JAM created a series of custom jingles for the VH-1 cable network. The idea was to create a new and very different look for their station IDs. Yes, the dancers did actually lip-sync to the jingles! The video elements were produced by Fred/Alan Inc., working with two different video houses in the New York area. This is just a sample of the many different pieces that were created.

Holy shit, over 30 years later and I found the random foot ID at 1:16! For the longest time I thought it was a fever dream from my youth! Thank you!

Yes. JAM did an earlier custom package for VH1 when it first began, in December 1984. The original VJs included Don Imus, Scott Shannon, Judy Collins and others.

I love the unconventional idents by Fred/Alan as well as the Jam jingles! Notice the strange composing errors that occur in each of the "salver" idents, when a background performer overlays another in the foreground ;-)

Do they have country music videos as well? In the USA we used to have VH1 Country but the station was rebranded into CMT Pure Country and now they're CMT Music.

Mateus Honrado I think that was the entire point of this branding. Or possibly the reverse. This was a way to "see" the jingles. :)

As a program director that used JAM for jingles back in the day, I recognize some of the sound effects in the instrumentation. Especially the jingle around :24. It has a definite Z-100 package vibe to it.

Flawless music and vocals as always (not counting the 60Hz hum!), and some interesting "sono-syncing" by the performers!
And finally we get to see what "colorsonics" REALLY look like! Toes were the days!
Also, the very last video is very well done, with the male-to-female transitions and esp. the way the "H" is BEHIND the models as they cross! Cool stuff!

Friends of mine hosted me for one month in Sausalito, It was the beginning of VH1, and when we came back from night out and talk for hours, vh1 was turning on a sony trinitron all night. 33 years ago already. With this i feel 1990 like if it was yesterday! I feel almost 19 again! Madonna was number one with vogue...

Those annoying ID's would abruptly air right over the end of the video, refusing to allow the end of the video to fade to black. Maybe VH-1 suspected viewers were recording videos off their network and decided to get nasty about it. I took a break from VH-1 up until their kinder, gentler "Music First" image in the mid-90s.

Alan Goodman, whose company Fred/Alan created the video portion, says: "The two blonds in one of the bits were Russian beauty queens from Russia, if I remember correctly. Don't remember how they got booked, but they were in NY and we cast them and later that day they were on Live at 5, the WNBC local news at the time. Knowing that Letterman taped across the hall at the same time, I called a friend at Letterman and told him Russian beauty queens were going to be in the building. Letterman, "live" during the show, had someone go across the hall and fetch them, which was something he'd do occasionally. So I got those girls on Letterman. " [Note from JAM: At time time I seem to recall hearing that they were Czech, but Alan says Russian. Pretty either way.]
