Useless fact: it's my first secret level in Doom which I found on my first playthrough in 1996 on my then-new DOS machine by complete accident wondering why the toxic pool room had a bridge and why the texture was slightly misaligned. I'm still proud of that accide... achievement.
Not to ruin it for you, but E1M9 is hardly a secret level given how easy it is to find the switch leading to E1M9. I myself got into Military Base on my first playthrough (but wondered where the level was after playing Knee-Deep the second time).
@@sovereignone1900 I wouldn't call it that easy. The switch to raise the bridge is in a secret area that can only be accessed from another secret area, both in an optional area of the map, and it's easy to miss the first secret because it's opened by a walkover trigger at the bottom of the steps. Yeah, it's not terribly difficult to do on a first playthrough if you're paying attention and exploring, but it's nothing to dismiss either.
Wow quite fascinating story my friend in fact most of the time I miss the secret level as kid and I didn't know why. It wasn't until by curiosity and being determined to kill all the demons and finding alll the secrets I found a switch to rise the bridge in e1m3 and find a secret level but is pretty cool to heard that story. Neat
I like how, in your Outtakes Compilation, your death tallies say Death #001, #002, #003, and #004, indicating possibilities of deaths ranging into the hundreds. Doom II: Map10: Refueling Base is gonna be fun to watch, fyi. Lol.
It's never the maps you expect as far as decino goes in my opinion; maybe aside from Sunlust Map28 which is just absurd pistol start, but was way more time than 29 or 30.
Id like to believe that the tension felt in this video perfectly encapsulates the feeling the developers aimed for when making the music for this level
I didn’t even know it was a secret level until I searched up e1m9. I just thought that that other exit in my favorite level was another way to get to e1m4
I've done a pistol start UV Max run of this level for my channel (not posted yet) and I agree even on UV it has its challenging moments. The start is especially.
I can see why this map is indeed hard for Nightmare Mode. Dude that clutch you made here was awesome! 😄And the outakes is always entertaining to me! 🍿Fantastic job as always! 👍
Amazing run Decino. That part with the 12% life was gut wrenchingly good. I loved this level because it was hard and the teleport tramp was a genuinely scary situation on my sweet 8 years. I didn't have to look for the secret because my father used to play it and he showed me how to do it. Great times.
Sounds familiar. It also took me quite a while to find my way into this map. This was back when I only had the shareware version of Doom, so getting a whole extra level to play was like "yeah, baby!"
Really enjoying this series. I've tried beating Doom 1 on Nightmare a few times but never got very far. It was a lot of fun though. Nightmare really adds a whole dimension of challenge to the game.
Nightmare difficulty speaks volumes about how well doom is designed. Think about it, they actively tried to make this unplayable, yet it's still completely playable. They couldn't even ruin the gameplay when they tried. Legendary.
Thanks for making these videos! I always considered Nightmare a meme difficulty, but it seems like there's a lot of potential in it. Though I will probably stick to just Doom 1 and 2, I don't want to imagine Plutonia on Nightmare, let alone any of the harder PWADs.
Yeah this is the map I got stuck on for a quite a while whilst playing through on Nightmare! But half of that is my terrible sense of direction and memory meaning it took me a few attempts to solidify the map layout in my mind! This level really encapsulates how frantic Nightmare can be. Looking forward to seeing you play through episode 4. I've admitted temporary defeat after a heck of a lot of deaths on only the first map from that!
This is great! But I do like how some of the older runs have the mystery of whether or not our pumpkin will win. It's much more exciting not knowing that he's definitely going to win or lose (up until he skips ahead and you hear "attempt number 27").
How on earth did you not get hit when you were on 12% health that was amazing I mean the run itself was amazing absolutely brilliant decino thanks for the upload
So I was playing Final Fantasy while watching this, and when you went to 16 health I found myself going into the white magic menu to cast curaga without thinking about it lol. Love you not including attempt number at the beginning, makes it more surprising to see the outtakes at the end.
That was absolutely brilliant! Congratulations. If you were not going to make even better videos in this series id vote it for the best Doom content I've seen on RUclips. Great job.
That was a great, intense run on an extremely tough map. Even on the Hurt Me Plenty difficulty, this one is challenging. Doom 1, without the SSG is especially difficult.
Definitely a clench level, and in my opinion, the hardest secret level in original Doom, even without Nightmare. Though going for all items, I can imagine Fear as being competition for which is more challenging.
Well played! This map its really, really hard on Nightmare, i never got the chance to beat it. Also its nice to see that you are having a lot of fun with this challenge, keep it up!
This popped up when I was opening my ice cream, not complaining 😁. I'm finding a newfound love for Nightmare!, especially as spectator. You can sense stress as you go, simply because of one, the randomness and two, there is a time strain once demons have died. Not gonna lie, that increases the entertainment.
Was wondering why u were playing doom '93, again...but then u said that DOOM is 30 yrs. Old! Wow! Watching for the Nostalgia & the great content u put out. Keep up the Great Work! 💯🎆
Very nice! I loved how you expected this attempt to be a failure and emerged victorious in the end! As I never played Nightmare difficulty; and I don't think I ever will; it's interesting to see, what tactics you can make. I have no idea if someone else did full playthrough like this in Doom, but I'm sure you can do it, from what I've seen, you are a very skilled Doom player. I'm especially interested in E4 maps as I personally really dislike E4, mainly E4M1, E4M2 and E4M6. But that's far away. I'm quite wondering what maps will cause you most deaths.
Ah the secret level. well I'll tell my friend when I found the secret as a kid after multiple times missing over and over and over I was pretty excited and fascinated by it it was more like a box of military base with some thingymajic it's hard to describe it but it's quite cool and I love the music by the way it makes me really pump out and become one of my favorite levels Believe It or Not in the first episode of Doom.
I was right to be excited for this one. With the unpredictability of the platform, I was honestly on the edge of my seat! Now I'm really wondering how you'll handle E1M8 & E2M1 because of the pinkies and of those flying tomatoes. It'll be nice to see how nightmare changes some encounters.
Was having a shit day and saw you posted a video. Definitely made my day a lot better!! Thank you Decino Edit: You put your death tally up on the end level screen with the other stats
The ultimate doom? More like the ultimate frustration I experienced trying to play Nightmare myself along you posting your gameplay. I don't think I've ever felt so horrible playing doom - still the satisfaction after beating a level is very much there ;] Ditched 100% items in map 3 :p Ditched single segment runs in map 3 :p (and I always play single segment) There's just no way I wouldn't go insane before the series is over. Every little things starts irritating you, whether it's your mistake or not. The blockmap (!), the inconsistent shotgun damage output (sometimes you kill an imps and two hitscanners, sometimes you can't get a single shotgunner and then when you're reloading he's got like 3 free hits on you), the turbo pinkies blocking you, the map geometry blocking you, the respawning enemies getting you stuck, the 50/50 instant red screen after barely entering a hitscan-filled room for 0.01 seconds, and stuff like holding instead of tapping the chaingun and missing every single hit on an enemy for like 30 rounds. Not fun :) Even with quicksaves I kept dying repeatedly due to hitscan or pinkies instantly cornering me. Good job with only 4 deaths (I'd call that luck - not getting instantly blasted by everyone at once, 8:40 - oh, how many times have I said that :) Still, very impressive. PS You mentioned the monster blocking line-def at 4:43 - any idea why a spectre managed his way into that room in my playthrough?
What a clutch run 👌😁 First 10 seconds I was like yeah this'll be EZ then I realised it's nightmare and than the anxiety came... Almost no health, pinkies, hitscan, corridors, blocking... Nope. I hate nightmare 😂 Medkits should respawn too! (that would be an interesting idea for a survival game 🤔) Man... Longest 5 minutes of my life 😁 You had me on edge since you left the starting position lol. Couldn't jab a pin into my bum if you tried 😁 Proud of you! Looking forward for the next pain 😂

Shooter boomers represent! Same here boyo.

I first played Doom in 1993 and have never stopped.

Map 14: The Inmost Dens and Map 22: The Catacombs are going to be insane, too
And probably map 29 :)
I think the only map ever that made decino go into triple digits amount of deaths was Quantum Strike 99X9
Not to mention the maps 13 and 15
It's never the maps you expect as far as decino goes in my opinion; maybe aside from Sunlust Map28 which is just absurd pistol start, but was way more time than 29 or 30.
Gotta love when a death outtake starts with "My health is really good by the way"
Id like to believe that the tension felt in this video perfectly encapsulates the feeling the developers aimed for when making the music for this level
OMG, now this was unexpectedly intense! I can't wait to see the rest of the game! Great run!
I spent years without knowing this level even existed until I checked out one of those GameFAQs guides from back in the day. Good times.
At least this was a stress free run. You could really walk around and enjoy the view.
I knew this map would have outtakes. The interconnected layout is probably a curse for nightmare, as enemies can follow you all around.
you can really feel the desperation in his voice. decino is usually calm, so that's to show how intense this is, and honestly it looks really fun
No. 3 was so painful... "my health is so good" and then that one misstep...
Freaking Spectres.
winter break just started for me so happy that decino uploads doom videos to watch all day
I remember the excitement of finding the secret level for the first time ever. I was so proud of myself.
Hello my red friend
I think I needed like a year to find the level myself when I was young
Holy heck... the gang's here!
@@michaelandreipalon359 - It's a small world ;)
I didn’t even know it was a secret level until I searched up e1m9. I just thought that that other exit in my favorite level was another way to get to e1m4

this is a good lookin WAD, the designers did a good job with it.
hope they get recognition and find jobs in the industry.
they should get the rock, he is a good actor.
I can see why this map is indeed hard for Nightmare Mode. Dude that clutch you made here was awesome! 😄And the outakes is always entertaining to me! 🍿Fantastic job as always! 👍
4:48- "Any Specters respawned? Nope."
*_CHOMP_*
"Yep! Yep yep yep. Yep."
Watching doom early morning gets me pumped.
Man there’s nothing quite like the level design of Episode 1. So solid. What do you all think? How does it compare to 2, 3 and 4?
I LOVE TECHBASE 📡⚡🦾🦿🚥💻🦾⚙️🖥️💻🦾⚙️🖥️🦿📡⚡🚦🚥💻🦾
E1 is the definitive DOOM experience.
E1 is perfect
Completely shits all over the other episodes. It's not even close.
E1>E5>E4>E2>E3 imo
Amazing run Decino. That part with the 12% life was gut wrenchingly good. I loved this level because it was hard and the teleport tramp was a genuinely scary situation on my sweet 8 years. I didn't have to look for the secret because my father used to play it and he showed me how to do it.
Great times.
I never knew how to get to this map legitimately back in the day. IDCLEV to the rescue!
It took me many years to work out how to get to this level
I did found this map, but somehow understood that there are 2 secret maps per episode and spent ages looking for the 2nd secret map ^^
My friend found out about it back in the day by pure accident. We tried hours to recreate the steps he took.
Sounds familiar. It also took me quite a while to find my way into this map. This was back when I only had the shareware version of Doom, so getting a whole extra level to play was like "yeah, baby!"
I couldn’t find it on my last playthrough a few years ago.
How you survived from 1:55 to 2:10 is beyond me. Great run!
That was awesome!😀 After watching this I'm so looking forward to you playing Refueling Base! 😁
It's nice seeing Decino having fun with these. This was a treat to watch good sir!
Really enjoying this series. I've tried beating Doom 1 on Nightmare a few times but never got very far. It was a lot of fun though. Nightmare really adds a whole dimension of challenge to the game.
Impressive run! That ending was such a feat in itself in Nightmare. Gonna continue watching this run as soon as your new video drops
100% Items is really unexpected to a run. Never watched this on a NM + 100% Secrets (this the kind of run that I make/watch). Very interesting.
Nightmare difficulty speaks volumes about how well doom is designed. Think about it, they actively tried to make this unplayable, yet it's still completely playable. They couldn't even ruin the gameplay when they tried. Legendary.

WOW!
Nice one Decino!
I never thought of jumping at the end. Gotta try it!
This guy is unbelievably good.
He had many years of practice.
That shotgunner at 8:42 is straight up giddy with the idea of having killed ducino.

Wow I was on the edge of my chair. Lots of close calls. That was a good run!
2:31 ducino stop swering!!!!!
Brilliantly done! That was so intense! 😂👍🏻
The military base incident was almost called "Annoying pinky bow wowing and biting on the stairs incident."
It’s awesome seeing you return to these classic maps again with an added nightmare twist.
Even though I knew you made it from the start, I still held my breath for you! Clutch run
Great idea to do this playthrough, so much fun to watch!

keep this up man this is awsome shit i have played doom for atleast 25 years and dont come close to being as good at it as you bro👍
Damn Decino. Chaotic map. Along with my favorite Doom 1 track. INTENSE!!
This is a good showcase of how pinkies and spectres are easily A tier enemies on Nightmare! difficulty.

Enjoying the epic uploads like always.

Wow, what a chaos! Great gameplay!
So many moments in the successful run that left me thinking "how the hell did you survive that?!"
Awesomely nail-biting run!
I'm not used to hearing panic in the normally so calm and soothing decino's voice.
That was hectic, good job tio decino
"My health is very good by the way" Heh, nice jinx :D
Holy hell. This run will be interesting. Never played on Nightmare in all the decades the game is out. And seeing this I know why xD
Fun trivia: Nightmare difficulty was introduced as a joke in version 1.2, in response to some fans who said that the game was "too easy".
What a run, on the edge of my seat the entire time
Also one of my favorite music tracks from the OG Dooms.
yet another spectacular pumpkin man video. can't wait for more hitscanner hell!
Holy heck! That was a nail biter! Congrats!
Less calm than normal but that was a lot of fun to watch! Thanks.
Wow that was so close! congrats for the great content
Damn dude, that was tense. Nice job!
That last Shotgun Guy was quick on the draw.
That was so intense haha awesome run
You got the run, it was a very cool run.
This level has, hands down, the BEST midi of all the original Doom maps!
I’m impressed! I don’t think I’ve made it past this level on Hurt Me Plenty(I’m such a wimp LOL).
My favorite ep1 map, my favorite track.
Loved how death #003 started with "My health is really good, BTW!"
Well done Decino, insane level
7:41 - Tempting fate? :D
ahhh i love this song ngl
Formidable! Absolutely wp, Decino!
