It sounds much worse than it usually is. For me it hurts my chest but it’s more of an inconvenience than a threat after all this time.

I've never heard a barking seal (have a good idea what it is though) so the internet explanations weren't helping too much. This video helped me to better help my kiddo. Thank you.
It sounds like an asthmatic cough in a way. My daughter has had a cough for 3 days now. But the short cough sounds like a seal bark. If it doesn't get better, we're going to her doctor. Thank you for the different sounds in cough.
Came here because my 3 yr old woke up with this cough. I've bumped up her vitamin C, giving her some herbals and honey and lots of warm fluids. Hoping we are not one of the ones who need to go into hospital. Praying for the little bubs who did have to. The world has changed and sickness seems to be consuming everybody.
My 3 year old son developed this over the weekend, ended up being blue lighted to hospital. It was scary how rapidly he went down hill. Just home tonight after a 3 night stay in hospital.
Thanks for this. After hearing it, it's definitely what my daughter has. Can't get her into the doctor until tomorrow afternoon, so this was very helpful.
Thanks for the video, it’s definitely croup cough. I was super nervous about her breathing last night, when she went to bed she was completely fine. This was sudden and she has no other symptoms.
This happened to my son. He went to bed feeling well. Middle of the night I heard a few coughs, went to check on him and decided to lay in with him. He had a full blow airway issue, had to call an ambulance. Very scary stuff. I was shocked how quickly it came on.

I am going into day 4 of this with my 1.5 year old. No symptoms to start then day 1 had to go to urgent care as she was breathing noisily when resting. She was nearly admitted, but given steroids and sent home been off work for going on 3 days now. The cough is still horrible and breathing has been touch and go at night. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy, hope everyone's little ones get better asap. Great video, wish there was more information out there about it, I was so shocked when they diagnosed Croup and how ill my daughter has been.

Thank you, this was very informative. My daughter is off to the GP, as shes coughing to much she's vomiting and cant always catch her breath. Its pretty scary, but good to know it will pass
My five-year-old has it at the moment, her breathing is absolutely awful and she can’t speak, but I know it will pass as it did with our eldest daughter who had terrible bouts of croup, once or twice culminating in an ER visit. The hard part is that they just don’t understand what’s going on, they freak out, they cry, they get really scared and you just have to remain calm and grounded like a rock, when inside you’re terrified too. Still, that’s the battle of a parent! Good luck to everyone with croupy little ones, it really is the pits but not as scary as it sounds.
Can I ask,how old was your eldest when she grew out of it. My Son is currently recovering from croup and he is 10. He has had it since he was 2,and gets it at the same time every year at the change of seasons.
@@shelbyreytenbach9113 technically she hasn’t grown out of it, as she still occasionally gets it when she gets a virus. In terms of it being completely debilitating though, I would say she was probably about six. She’s 11 now. The most recent bout of croup in our five-year-old was pretty frightening though. She really couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t speak, she sounded like she would stop breathing at any moment. It’s cleared up now though. I think the difficulty is considering when and when not to take them to the doctors/hospital. I think if that bout of croup had lasted longer than a couple of nights I would’ve had to have taken her. I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry, no matter how stupid you feel, it’s better that they get seen rather than suffering at home and potentially causing more problems. I once let my 11-year-old stay at home for three days with what we later discovered was pneumonia. I wanted to take her to the doctors so badly, but I let my fear of being labelled a hypochondriac mother stopped me, resulting in more suffering. I now have a list. When they get croup, I take them outside first, let them breathe the cold air in. Then, if that doesn’t work, I’ll take them inside, fill the shower with steam and sit with them in there. If that doesn’t work, I sit them up in my arms and let them sleep Until the next day. If that doesn’t work, I might be inclined to call the doctor. Haven’t had to do that yet though, not since the hospital stay. Don’t know if any of that helps, but it is all a complete nightmare🤣🍷🍷🍷
When i was young i had it every year. The first time i had it i had to go to the hospital. I was just 4. Until i was 10 i got it every year. Every year a little less impactful. I did not know what happend to me at the time. The only things i knew was the pain while breathing and talking and especially coughing. I knew the pain in my chest. I knew i was incredibly warm and i had to go outside sometime in the middle of the night. I knew i had to get a cold-warm shower and that i had to get breathing help with medicine. I knew my nightmares. I wanted to know what it meant. And now i finally understand what happend to me. Thank you

Thank you for this video! I found it incredibly helpful. My 17 mo old just started with this cough last night throughout the middle of the night. It began two days ago as a cold. They have been miserable. I plan to call their doctor today to see if they can give them a check over. They've had a pretty high fever.
Hey Doc So my child (Now 16) recently had a bout of croup - I knew it the moment I heard the sound. She has been plagued with it since she was 18m old, being rushed into hospital because her lips were blue. She has always been sick with each attack of whatever has been causing it. She was given steroids at 18m, 3 years old, 4 years old, 6 years old and assured that this is a childhood ailment and she would grow out of it. 16 years old and croup symptoms? To the point of agitation which of course made breathing more difficult 8 breathes in a minute. After paramedics had seen her, luckily her breathes had regained to 17 per minute. She had a temperature of 39.5C, sticky to touch, looking not quite with the world and peely wally. Doctor prescribed her penicillin, but to my knowledge, Penicillin only combats bacteriums and not virus. So I now wonder with Strep A going around - having sadly killed 7 children in the UK so far, is that something that can cause the croup? Adding onto this that my friend who is 42, also had croup symptoms recently and we had not been in physical contact with each other before or after my daughter's symptoms reared their ugly head once again. That sound gives me anxiety every time because I have a negative emotional attachment to it. Anyway, thanks for listening and thanks in advance for any reply.

I am a medical student it's my lastyear and because of covid I had lack of useful information this video helped me alooot thank yooou😍💙 By the way I wanna be a pediatrician🥺
It would have been helpful if you could have given some home remedies to try that can help a child with croup - things to alleviate the suffering aside from the meds. It empowers the parents when they can offer something helpful to the child that gives some relief and comfort :)
My parents told me that I had this for 5 yrs. There were not any medications for this. My pediatrician prescribed tetracycline which at the time was new on the market. Unfortunately, it had a nasty side affect. It discolored my permanent teeth. Throughout my life all I heard was 1. you have worn braces for a long time, 2. Why don't you smile more? 3. From supervisors I heard that I needed to smile more and I was marked down on evaluation which I found totally unfair, 4. Why are your teeth grey? I was and am so sick of hearing this. I should not have to explain myself to everyone ... none of this was my fault. I have found a dentist who can bleach tetracycline stains. After 60 yrs. I am praying for the best.
My 3yo girl has croup at time of writing this. She's on day 4. It's very concerning. Went into hospital last night as we couldn't get her temperature under control. They gave her Ibroprufen and Dexamethasone. She eventually perked up after a few hours and her sat returned to normal levels, we were sent home. Been able to control temperature so far today however, her cough has increased in frequency and she is almost off food and fluids completely. Took her to her GP an hour ago. Her sats 97-98 saturation, BPM 100, but didn't present any coughing or quick shallow breathing as she has been at the appointment. Since coming home, her temp is still normal but excessive coughing and shallow quick breathing pattern has returned and is difficult to witness. She is asleep and seems worse when asleep. No coughing when asleep but rapid breathing. We've been in this position before with her older sibling (hospital for a week with steroids and adrenaline) and I just wish that even a low dose of steroid could be prescribed based on our continuing observation and visits to medical professionals in over the last 24 hours, describing the issues she has, as a form of preventative care instead of, 'lets see how she goes', and as a result, reactive care. It's very frustrating. She had croup just over a year ago and they told us then that is what they had started doing, but something seems to have changed in 'treatment' moving forward since then.
The sounds are at 2:20. For anyone like me who wanted to come hear the sounds real quick.

Thanks for watching- please also check out the links in the description box which contain lots of useful extra information

It sounds like an asthmatic cough in a way. My daughter has had a cough for 3 days now. But the short cough sounds like a seal bark. If it doesn't get better, we're going to her doctor. Thank you for the different sounds in cough.
Thanks - yes if you have any concerns please go see your doctor
Thanks this video help me, my son had croup the video was a pointer.Apprieciate your effort to educate us.
Glad it helped and thank you very much for commenting. I hope he is ok now.
Thank you for posting this video. I am in nursing school and I couldn’t for the life of me understand what causes CROUP
Hi LaTonya. Thanks for this comment - very glad you found the video useful and best of luck in your nursing studies!
So sorry to hear this. I hope he is making a full recovery now.
Thanks for this. After hearing it, it's definitely what my daughter has. Can't get her into the doctor until tomorrow afternoon, so this was very helpful.
Hope she’s ok - thanks for watching and glad it was helpful
Thanks for this video my son must have croup after hearing these sounds. This really helped a worried mum especially with all the covid news around.
Glad it was helpful! Hope he is ok now.
Hi I hope your son is ok now, did you seek medical advice or did it heal itself?
How is your son doing now?

Thanks for the video, it’s definitely croup cough. I was super nervous about her breathing last night, when she went to bed she was completely fine. This was sudden and she has no other symptoms.
Thank you for the comment
This happened to my son. He went to bed feeling well. Middle of the night I heard a few coughs, went to check on him and decided to lay in with him. He had a full blow airway issue, had to call an ambulance. Very scary stuff. I was shocked how quickly it came on.
@@danielleopk7654 happened to my 3 y/o aswell. No other symptoms other than sudden breathing difficulties with croup sound. No coughing either. So scary
This was so helpful. I had no idea Croup could be treated at home.
Glad it was helpful
I am going into day 4 of this with my 1.5 year old.
No symptoms to start then day 1 had to go to urgent care as she was breathing noisily when resting. She was nearly admitted, but given steroids and sent home been off work for going on 3 days now. The cough is still horrible and breathing has been touch and go at night.
I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy, hope everyone's little ones get better asap.
Great video, wish there was more information out there about it, I was so shocked when they diagnosed Croup and how ill my daughter has been.
I hope your little one is back to full health
I know the feeling, I was really worried and had no idea of what it was. My baby was given steroids too and he felt better but now after 3 months he seems to have croup again and I don’t know what to do.
In nursing school here! I like the simple explanation and you just earned a new sub.

Thank you so much for this. My son just received some steroids for it and this video helped me explain croup to my family and also calm me down!
I’m very happy to hear this and hope he is now ok
Thank you, this was very informative. My daughter is off to the GP, as shes coughing to much she's vomiting and cant always catch her breath. Its pretty scary, but good to know it will pass
Glad it was helpful! Hope she gets better soon.
Thanks for sharing this here.
Thank you
Thank you for the real life examples 😭😭😭
You’re very welcome
Thank you for this video. my 6 year old came into my room upset about his bad cough and he had some wheezing type sounds going on. it was 4am so I was still out of it but as soon as he coughed I knew what it was. very hoarse voice with noisy breathing and that bark sound but no fever. I appreciate this video to help calm my nerves and know he will be ok.
Glad it helped and I hope he is now ok.
@@DrODonovan thank you. 48 hours after that night he spiked a fever and now has a wet cough am facial congestion. Negative for flu and Covid so no idea if its still croup or not. Just Givin him lots of love and fluids for now.
I’m pretty certain my son has croup now. He is 10 years younger than my eldest who also suffered croup as a young child and the cough is so distinctive. Day 7 and off to the GP tomorrow
Great info Dr O! Hope that our little guy is able to recover from this virus soon.
Let me know how he gets on. More information in the description box too.
Thanks Doc. I knew what it was but your video helped me understand a bit more

Thank you for this video! I found it incredibly helpful. My 17 mo old just started with this cough last night throughout the middle of the night. It began two days ago as a cold. They have been miserable. I plan to call their doctor today to see if they can give them a check over. They've had a pretty high fever.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Doc
So my child (Now 16) recently had a bout of croup - I knew it the moment I heard the sound.
Sorry to hear about these experiences. They sound scary for you. I am sorry but for medico-legal and ethical reasons I can't give individual clinical advice on this channel. This is designed as a general education channel. Please consult your doctor or health provider for individual questions and concerns. I hope you found the video informative nontheless. Best wishes.
Thank you for the video. It helped mr to understand the sounds of croup. Which I believe my toddler has and yes it is scary.
I hope they get better very soon
Thank you for posting examples of croup cough! I'm pretty sure my 3 year old has it as his cough sounds exactly like that and he has a very hoarse voice. Still his active self so fingers crossed he will be able to fight it on his own. You have yourself a new subscriber, very insightful video.
Hi and thank you for the comment. I hope your son is getting better. I’ve included extra links for parents in the description box which might be helpful too. Thank you also for subscribing. Hey I have a almost 4 year old and she just started coughing and choking on fleim in her throat and she started throwing it up but she couldn’t catch her breathe for a minute her voice has been hoarse all day too and now her cough sounds crazy like a dog toy idk what to do, now she’s wheezing really bad
Looks like I'll be taking my little one to the doctor today as well really thank you so much I'm tearing up right now because I was really scared.
I've dealt with this kinda cough my entire life when I get a upper respiratory infection and I'm now 52. I'm still dealing with this current infection that's been going on for 2+ months.
Sorry to hear this. Please consult your doctor if you have concerns. Hope you get better
I’m 20 and I still have croup too! Doctors have never been able to help me because it usually goes away on its own in children, so they have no fix for adults. I just want to live normally!

We are also on week three of this cough. After antibiotics and steroids from the first doctor visit she still developed a touch of pneumonia and needed more antibiotics at the second doctor visit.

Hi Lynne. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience on this channel. I hope you are ok. All the best.
Thanks a lot! This has been the most helpful info I’ve found on the topic. I’m never sure if we actually need to actual visit the doctor.
Thanks for such lovely feedback 🙏🏻
Great, Practical and succinct. Thank you.

I’m very sorry to hear this and hope she makes a good recovery
Thank you, I hope so too
Thank you so much for this!! This confirmed my suspicion
