Street Fighter II - Guile's Handcuff Glitch Move Explained

- I never would have believed it, but Guile's legendary handcuff move in Street Fighter II is real. It only works on the original arcade version of Street Fighter II the World Warrior, but it's there! It's actually pretty easy to pull off too, but perhaps not as useful as you might expect.
Here's a good video of someone who knows what their doing pulling off all of Guile's glitched moves, including the magic throw.

I used to do this back in the 90's. when my opponent started cheesing. Soft lock the game, scoop up my quarters, and bounce. I even got chased home once by some very angry teens. I was 12, lol.
Yep, same here. Locked up a guy when he was Chung li. And he got pissed when I didn’t tell him how I did it. I gave him my controls and he tried to unlock but couldn’t. Then he said we can’t play no more till it’s reset. lol.

I'm 38 knew about all of this around 9 years old going to Godfather's Pizza in Sacramento, Ca. Remember multiple Hadokens on the screen at a time, Handcuffs, Coming through the bottom of the screen to the top and repeat with certain moves? The code for free credits to play free? Up Up Down Down etc... I used to make slugs just to play sometimes too lmmfao

@@koro1655 I used cheat and to do the Pile Driver with Zangief, you could keep doing it until time was up because you would go to the top of the screen and come from underground. Memories...

I did it 25 years ago. I had restart the game
my dad showed me how to do it on arcade cabnets and YOU CAN get out of it, now i cannot say i know how to do so but i dad did it, i remember the original handcuff combo but i dont remember what the unlock is(i think its the combo but backwards?) my dad called the soft lock a "statue" guile, the trick was you sonic boom and jump towards them to close the gap, deal some damage and then cuff them, keep them help until 5 seconds and do the unlock and then jump, if they try to jump to damage you throw them foward and back away and time runs out, easy win with cheese.
its a move my dad hated, he thought it was cool and all but took away the fun of the game, and with guile being his favorite fighter, when people started finding out about this and the infinate flash kicks they started turtling and gave a bad name to guile players so no one would play him, if there is anything i have learned its that if a experienced guile player is walking towards you then you have lost, because they more than likely are actually really REALLY good and know how to play a defensive fighter on the offense which is dangerous
Magic throw to get out of it
It was move right and then left and press opposing top and bottom buttons at the same time to use invisible throw. This unlocked the handcuffs. We use to use it daily.
wow i didnt know this and i was one of the kids who played it to death in the arcade playing winner stays on with a large crowd around with their coins placed on the machine to take on the winner...great times!
it was just a delayed blade kick leading with strong throw. you can release it by doing a double sonic boom with strong punch and kick
Seen this being done around 1993. I distinctly remember Guile being locked in that standing on one leg upright pose and whoever it was that did it ended up breaking out of it. Took him a good few tries to get it. It's mad how that even in Ireland before the internet days, things like that still managed to travel around. How he learned how to do it is something else. I also heard at the same time that Guile also had a hand gun in his boot. That abviosuly turned out to be bollocks.

A simpler way to do this is just get near the opponent, charge the sonic kick, do sonic kick normally and swipe your fingers (in one motion) down across Med punch and Med kick. No need to do any reverse circle up. Also you only need to sonic boom to get out using Med punch - but may take several tries.
Also if you do the same method I describe above except swipe down High punch then High Kick the machine will reset itself. All coins lost.
yup, this is how it was done. I always went from crouch to upper left corner while swiping down the medium buttons.. you can also throw and re-handcuff in a single motion.

So if it's mainly charge characters why none with E Honda or Blanka?
This is probably what lead the budgeting moves, just like accidental combo system lead to combos. It's easier if you don't do the buttons at the exact same time but brush your thumb up very quickly.
Zangief can grab from across the screen in turbo/hyper/rainbow editions.

I’ve done it in arcade. Early 90’s that shit was top secret. Was offered 100.00 to tell him how I did it 😂😂

What about the super throw from across the screen from guile?
It's a different command to use the invisible throw outside the handcuffs. It's back for 2 seconds, then forward, back + mp + hk.
I also managed to freeze myself while playing as Zangief once. Never knew how I did it, though.
Guile Secret Moves:
Street Fighter II (World Warrior):
Magic Throw/Invisible Throw (looks like Medium Throw animation, makes opponent fall to ground and drag; can do it toward or away; it has a range; can pull Vega off wall, etc.; can use to get out of Handcuffs)
Handcuffs (see video above; opponent is locked to side of Guile, Guile can move freely; do a Magic Throw to exit it)
Turn Off Machine (resets machine)
The Pose/Freeze (Guile freezes in his one leg pose animation of the upside down standing Heavy kick; will pause game if in pose while timer runs out, can exit it even after the timer pause to resume end of game)
Dhalsim Secret Moves:
Street Fighter II (World Warrior):
Invisible (removes Dhalsim's image from the screen)
Zangief Secret Moves:
Super Street Fighter II:
Magic Grab (allows Zangief to do extended range grabs)
Akuma Secret Moves:
Super Street Fighter II Turbo:
Akuma is now a selectable character at the select screen
Ryu Secret Moves:
Super Street Fighter II Turbo:
Ryu (Old/Super Version) can perform a sometimes unblockable air Hurricane special kick)
There's probably lots more stuff. Like the Vega fall through screen on the burning barrel bonus stage, etc.

My nephew used to do that move and would usually end up in a real fight
well you didnt have to let it freeze until it had to be turned off, you just do the "invisible throw" fault on the same chararcter.
Once I got shown how to do it, I did it all the time specifically when someone wanted to challenge me, and i would say "If you challenge me, I will do cheapies on you", and if they still challenged me than I just did super throw after super throw... they stood no chance... and afterwards I would say " I warned you I would cheapy you!" LOL oh great times.
Best way to do it is when ur winning do the handcuffs and uncuff urself at the end of the round and u win

Once I got in a fight at an arcade over my handcuff invisible throw shenanigans.
I can do it consistently and get out of them. You don't have to move the joystick in a half circle. Just do the normal flash kick motion and swipe the strong and forward kick buttons downward with your finger so you're pressing strong punch a split second before forward kick button
They should of added a hand cuff move to Street Fighter 6 Guile, that would be dope
Used to do this every time to all my opponents, damage them up a bit then handcuff them, release before timer ran out... this is pro status players who used to hustle the arcades ;)
Is there a way to tell if an arcade system has the glitch or a patched (later) version?
They never patched it. If it says "The world warriors" then its not Champion edition and it should work. If its not in the original cabinet then if you can't select the 4 bosses then it's an original.
@@waynedockery2385 Nope. You're wrong. I specifically remember going from arcade to arcade looking for machines that had the glitch. Famously, the arcade at UCLA had one, and had a sign asking you not to lock the game up by using the glitch. My local arcade had newer units that did not have the glitch.
You can tell by the version ID number/date which is shown when the game boots. Version 910206 definitely has the glitch and later ones don't, but I'm not sure where the cutoff point is. It's only the original World Warrior that does this though, the Champion Edition and all later versions of Street Fighter II don't have this glitch at all.

The handcuff is useful , u can do cheap your opponents out . Just do more damage than your opponents do to u and then do the handcuffs, the round will be yours by timeout
It happened to me he couldn't get out of it, and they had to reset the whole machine, this was in 7/11 when they used to have arcades in them.

this glitch definitely worked on at least one of SNES ports of street fighter 2. My older brother used to do it to me and it would drive me crazy! I rarely ever won a match against him

I saw a kid thrashing everybody at the mall using this glitch. Then my friend and I tried it everyday after school, locking up the machine every time.
Back in the day I was a 6th former and we were allowed to finish earlier than the kids in the lower classes. I'd go to the local newsagent that had sf2 and wack my 20p and wait for challenges when the rest of school finished. Now most of those kids knew they couldn't beat me 1v1 (and it was winnder stays on). So the kids would wack their 20p or nuggets in saying who's next but refusing to challenge me. I'd get upto to Vega and then hand cuff him and let the timer run out. shop owner would reset the arcade but the kids wouldn't get their money back lol (yeah ok i was evil lol)
One thing I was never able to do was Guiles invisible throw in a 1v1, was tricky to do vs AI and there were only a few characters i could pull it off against (Chun-Li and Vega) but impossible in a 1v1

Do the handcuff move in the arcades and you lose your quarter against the computer and lay possible freeze the game as time hits zero.
Do this against a real player and they get either dumbfounded or really mad at you.
The last time is did handcuffs to someone in game, they told the manager and claimed it destroyed the games motherboard. This was to get the manager to kick me out.
