I hate that old trope. You win, but then cutscene says no. They could have made one new scene where you win through effort, show both brothers tired, and then guards show up and Hubert says something like 'you may be stronger and more skilled, but I have numbers'. You get some wicked Exp, a very helpful item, maybe a weapon a few areas ahead of where you are, and a hefty chunk of Hubert's allowance. You still lose, but now it's justified. Asbel was tired from the fight, and he wasn't going to risk a war.
They should've made it possible to beat him. The following cutscene would have Asbel going in for a finishing blow before their mom comes in begging them to stop. Hubert, seeing an opening, attacks Asbel and claims victory.

Or in Abyss, if you beat Asch, you'll win, Asch will whine...and then you fall unconscious. Couldn't you have a seen where Asbel wins and is about to deal a finishing blow, stops himself because he doesn't want to hurt Hubert, and then Hubert takes the chance to hit him or something?

On my first playthrough (I played on hard) he was beating the crap outta me and almost thought about using items but it was obvious you had to lose. Still took about half his health down...

i did the piggyback kill for Rockagong (weirdly i didn't get any exp or sp just 46k gald) and went to the part were Zhonecage got unlocked and forgot about the battle went in though hmm there doing 2k damage on me... (i was lv95 orso) and i died (also my friend who play Hubert i forgot to reequip armor =S) turned out i forgot to set it off evil mode =S :DD

This fight is just useless. Just let him defeat you. You will never beat him here at the Manor. The game is telling you at this point you are not yet ready to take Hubert on even though you have just started the game and even though you think you're good enough and you think your current levels are also good those levels of yours are still no match match for Hubert. You have to think to yourself he has 4 times the power and has more skills and Mystic Artes than you do and you haven't even got a single Mystic Arte up to this point.Also to add onto the mechanics of this fight Hubert has a limiter cap in place to which he is only operating on 1/4 of his true power and you are at this point using all 4/4 of your power to beat him here.So this is WHY you're inevitably going to lose this fight.Also to finish this comment this fight serves to be a mandatory plot point exposition that serves to make you progress through the story.
Actually i had Asbels first mystic art but thats because in the beginning of any tales of game i try to farm the most useful thing depending on that game like tales of xillia its usually materials i farm in this one it was titles and artes

Usually tales games have interesting cutscenes when you beat someone you're not supposed to. They should've done something like that.

his HP never goes down to 0. He only makes you THINK he is at 0HP, when he actually has 389,121 HP. Take that much and you win the battle =03.
at least in tales of symphonia, you could lose to a certain boss, cuz its in the storyline, but you can also win...

yup, in symphonia, you can beat kratos, which is hard as hell, or die
took me 3 hours to beat him and still "lose"
