So Katara's brother had to be white to, and they made the Fire Nation indian to make it "inclusive" - and also so the director could make a cameo as a Fire Nation soldier. 3. The strange scenes where they were moving reaaally slowly yet no bending happened were supposed to have special effects for bending originaly, but they ran out of money despite their huge budget of $150 million, because of arctic photo shoots they did. Poor budget planning all around. 4. Suki and the Kiyoshi warriors were in the trailer, but they cut them out, and honestly I'm grateful for it. 5. The old man who betrayed Aang in the air temple was probably a weird mix of the guru and the inventor who worked for the Fire Nation in the eastern air temple. I say probably, because that was such a weird thing to do instead of having Aang captured by literally anyone else. 7. The only reason (aside from budget) they made the earth bender prison OUT OF FREAKING EARTH was to make an action scene happened, and yet they ran out of budget again so there was almost no bending in by the time they were done. 8. The director thinks he's inspired by European films, with his weird close-up camera shots and no-cut action scenes. As an European, I feel insulted, because that's not European, that's just bad directing. 9. The weird test thing they did for Aang (or should I say "Oong") was supposed to be a reference to how they picked the Avatar in the air temples - by showing the Avatar toys from his past lives. They somehow made the whole thing extremely confusing. 10. The director, who was also the script writer, somehow forgot to have his main character *introduce himself* in the first act of the movie. Later, Katara awkwardly asks him "if it's okay to ask him his name", DESPITE the three of them travelling together presumably for weeks by that point. As you might have noticed, neither Appa or Momo are named in the movie. Again, budget restrains, but considering how awful both of them look in the few scenes they have... it's better that way. 15. Not to mention it would negate the whole "Zuko is Avatar Roku's great grandson" plotpoint. I still question who thought that was a good idea. 17. There are so many scenes that don't make sense that an thorough review would probably take 3 times longer than the actual movie. It's fascinating how bad it is. Nostalgia Critic did a pretty great job of picking this dumpster fire of a movie apart and isolating why it's so bad. And he did it in about a half hour.
About your point 16, Shyamalan had only watched the first two books when he started making the film lol so apparently he had no idea about the whole Zuko being Roku's great grandson, or about Zuko finally getting redemption. It's crazy to think about how he had no idea what happens in the final season while making the movie. Kinda explains why he omits major side characters and and plot points that play a major part in the third book
I remember being so hyped going into the theater and then completely miserable as I realized I was watching a train wreck unfold. It's rare that you see something and can't find one redeemable quality bout it.
I never saw it in theaters, but I saw fans being interviewed about it less than a year ago, and to this day I remember this one fan who looked dead in the camera, completly devastated, and said "I should have watched Twilight" and just walked away.
Seriously like how does a show this popular gets a theatrical movie and it bombed this hard like that's a impossibility I mean the show had already concluded so everything was basically gift wrapped for M Night to use and he still screwed it up
When I saw this in theaters, I remembered all of us at the end walked out of the movie practically speechless and disappointed and all I could say was "that...wasn't a good movie." Someone replied to me "you said it."
Like the fact it wasn’t Katara starting a storm due to being pissed off which caused Aang to appear in the start may seem like a small change, but it was like an anime main character moment showing that even if she’s not a pro bender she has so much power inside, like it immediately makes you see her as powerful character whose power is about to really show itself one day. And here they just hit the ice with boomerang
The part where the monk tricked Aang is actually based off one of the stand alone comics. They would lead airbenders who managed to escape the raids by lighting candles in air temples or camps. The remnants would think that they were survivors of their kind but it would be a set up and they would end up getting captured and killed. Which made the genocide of the airbenders successful
I mean even from the very start it went wrong, in the beginning of the cartoon we were shown how independent Katara was, how Sokka was bickering with her showing off his personality already and main thing the amount of power Katara had. Katara legit made a small storm while yelling at Sokka which lifted the sphere and that moment showed that there’s so much power in Katara even if she can’t control it yet, I think it’s super crucial in this show.
Exactly! One of my favorite subtle things is how they show characters like Katara grow in power. Katara starts off with a lot of raw talent and an eagerness to learn, so it makes sense that once she gets a master she becomes a beast very quickly.
I remember reading that the director purposefully had the actors mispronounce certain terms like ‘avatar’ and ‘aang’ in order to further separate this movie from the cartoon series. Also, as a kid I never noticed how the protagonists were played by white looking actors while the villains were played by people of color. In one of the scenes, you can clearly see that Sokka, Katara, and Gran Gran are the only white looking people in the village.
If I'm remembering correctly, the girl that played Yue is the ONLY member of the cast to continue acting(other than a few of the adults). She also voices a main character in Legend of Korra.
Also fun fact: in the last episode, when everyone was roasting the play about them, Sokka said “but the effects were decent”. That was a joke about this movie.
"It can't be that bad" it is that bad, it is worse. don't worry the four-part finale will restore your love. thanks for listening to us and watching this abomination before the finale. Your final memories of this series should be pleasant ones. Until you watch Legend of Korra, of course. and read the comics. 💘
35:49 "let a bro meditate" RIGHT??? 😂🙄 or in the iconic words of the original aang, the legend himself "How about some quiet????! Come on guys i can hear every word youre saying!!!" 💀
I have never seen the movie in its entirety. This movie broke the number one unspoken rule: Show, don’t tell! I don’t know how or why the scene with the six Earthbenders doing their own dance to move a little rock made through the editing process. And I didn’t like how Zuko just grabbed a random kid to ask him about his banishment. Zuko from the show would never do that! Zuko’s scar is basically nonexistent, which is quite something, considering how big Zuko’s scar from the show is.
@@zrc1514 Are you telling me that blowing half your budget to film the first 15 minutes in greenland isn't the pinnacle of careful conservation of resources? I am shocked. Shocked I tell you.

I nearly peed myself when you denied Prince Zuko! Dev Patel is an amazing actor, but he is not Prince Zuko. Not one single actor in this was good casting. I think Uncle Iroh and Aang were the worst casting mistakes, though. I have a cat named Iroh. He looks more like Uncle Iroh than this man.
Aang isnt even an actor is the problem. He was the closest thing to a 12 year old boy that was proficient in the martial arts they wanted for the airbending in the movie.
@@DragonMoth34 i feel like some acting classes and better directing could’ve fixed that tbh. Even if he wasn’t the best performance, he could’ve made a passable aang
Tbh in terms of skill, I never had an issue with Zuko's actor. He's an excellent actor and really has the ability to pull off such a complex character. I did have an issue with the scar though - it's barely there!
Honestly the SFX team, set design team, costume department, and SOME of the actors did the best they could. It was literally the script and editing choices that ruined this fucking movie. If shamalamadingdong was not the director, this could’ve been at the least, a decent stand alone
The bending is supposed to have a 1:1 equivalent of element motion to body motion. With Aang flipping his arms around before pushing away from Zacko, he had lots of wasted movements, but it is not nearly as bad as the earthbending prison!
It wasn't just that he messed up the timeline, ethnicities, names, story.....the whole thing as a film sucked! It was like a high school project with lots of money for costume/set. There are a few videos of film students completely tearing this movie apart. Even if you didn't watch the show first, it is clear this movie was poorly made and the acting was just bad and awkward. The only person I thought didn't do so bad was the actress who played Yue. I thought she actually did pretty well, and Dev Patel seemed to at least....try.
22:02 “This is just going to be a bunch of guys [reacting to men doing a backstreet boys dance routine just to levitate a rock toward the enemies at the speed of an electric wheelchair], isn't it?” Sokka: “That's what I paid for.” They say Ko the Face Stealer was the cameraman in this movie...which is why everyone is stiff and expressionless ahaha X ) I told youuuuu, it's all the doing of trolls. You guys suffered enough and then some - I forgive you, haha. As Sokka would say, there were a couple of decent effects, and Yue was like the only actor worth watching. I think her actress voices a character in the Legend of Korra.
Sorry you had to go through that but now you can call yourselves true Avatar fans 😂 (I had the same reaction when I saw it in the cinema for the first time 😬)
I remember how mad I was, the movie was so bad, and so different than Avatar was, and why did they call them Oong and Soakka, the fight scenes are so boring, and they were somehow shocked when the firebenders made fire? That is literally what firebending is
I’m confused. I see the word “Movie” in the title, but I see no movie. Just you guys reacting to something. I’m glad you guys have the experience of this... creation though!
I'm one of the few people who doesn't mind that the Firebenders need an external source in this version, but it just makes it stupid that the Northern Water Tribe leaves all these lit torches lying around.
There's a guy on RUclips who did a fan casting for a live Avatar. I can't put links to it yet, because it does have a few images from the final 4 episodes. But when you've finished watching that, I'll put up the links. The fan casting this guy came up with is really good.
Fun fact: this movie actually won the Golden Rasberry Award for Worst Movie of 2010. They were in the process of filming the second movie when the producers walked on set and fired everybody on the spot.
I can't bring myself to actually watch this reaction, because that would mean having to see pieces of this atrocity again, but I applaud you for getting through it.
Aww yisss this is what I live for. Only 7min in and enjoying my chips while yall point out everything that's wrong with disgust (: I say this every time, it's good they used wrong pronunciations because they're no where near the actual character. M. Night didnt even understand the basics of how bending works he treated it like a weapon when its an extention of the person...when they move the element moves with them its not some shit where they do a dance and things happen
I remember 9 of my friends all caught the bus to the mall 45 min away from school because we all lived in different parts of the city. The theater was packed! There were no empty seats. We ended up sitting in the front because of how packed it was. The moment they said Ong it was over for us. Over! Everyone in the theater was mad and booed at the end.

I never saw it in theaters, but I saw fans being interviewed about it less than a year ago, and to this day I remember this one fan who looked dead in the camera, completly devastated, and said "I should have watched Twilight" and just walked away.
@@yay2549 Which video is that i would love to see this omg
@@cedeceekoriresu1792 'FANS UNLEASH EPIC HATE FOR THE LAST AIRBENDER' its like a live action version of this comment section. It was awesome.
Seriously like how does a show this popular gets a theatrical movie and it bombed this hard like that's a impossibility I mean the show had already concluded so everything was basically gift wrapped for M Night to use and he still screwed it up
LMAO the reactions you guys had to the movie officially cements your credibility as true avatar fans. Welcome to the club haha
When I saw this in theaters, I remembered all of us at the end walked out of the movie practically speechless and disappointed and all I could say was "that...wasn't a good movie." Someone replied to me "you said it."
"Why Sokka is so serious, man? Where are the jokes?" Hahahahahaha. The disappointment this movie makes is making me tearbend
OMGGGGG RAPHAEL CRACKED ME TF XD Zuko: I am Prince Zuko | Raphael: NO YOU'RE NOT!!! NO YOU'RE NOT!!! NO YOU'RE NOT!!! YOU KNOW YOUR NOT! | Me: LOL
Every Avatar fan has to suffer through this movie at least once
Like the fact it wasn’t Katara starting a storm due to being pissed off which caused Aang to appear in the start may seem like a small change, but it was like an anime main character moment showing that even if she’s not a pro bender she has so much power inside, like it immediately makes you see her as powerful character whose power is about to really show itself one day. And here they just hit the ice with boomerang
Starting... A storm? She got mad and cracked the ice. How long has it been since you've seen the show?
From 28:55 to 29:10, Michael looked like someone had just flogged him. The pain in his eyes was a perfect depiction of how this film makes me feel
That's actually really sad :(
I mean even from the very start it went wrong, in the beginning of the cartoon we were shown how independent Katara was, how Sokka was bickering with her showing off his personality already and main thing the amount of power Katara had.
21:30 "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??"
Me: waaiit... waaaiittt... waaaiiiitt...
my reaction was just like that only more "wait for it guys WAIT FOR IT! JUST PRESS PLAY SO I CAN WATCH YOUR FACE DROP ALREADY!!!!!'
At least you’re watching this BEFORE Sozin’s Comet, end your ATLA experience on a high note
I remember reading that the director purposefully had the actors mispronounce certain terms like ‘avatar’ and ‘aang’ in order to further separate this movie from the cartoon series.
Also, as a kid I never noticed how the protagonists were played by white looking actors while the villains were played by people of color. In one of the scenes, you can clearly see that Sokka, Katara, and Gran Gran are the only white looking people in the village.
damn, that's racist.. right? Is it racist?
@@Daesma999 yes😑
@@girlscott411 yeah, okay. I just wasn't that sure if I can use that term.. even though it's kinda obvious..

everyone reaction to Iroh got me so weak LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Eroh here was a pale PALE shadow of the real deal and yet the best part of this movie. Not so much a bright side more a slightly less dark side.
"who is that supposed to be" im already cryingg
not even 10 seconds in
Michael: fuck off
😂
I refreshed so many times to witness this torture session 😭
If I'm remembering correctly, the girl that played Yue is the ONLY member of the cast to continue acting(other than a few of the adults). She also voices a main character in Legend of Korra.
Can’t forget Dev Patel! He’s been in some great movies to make up for this train wreck
So they really couldn't find a kindhearted, chubby older man to play Uncle 🙄 it's diabolical!
Also fun fact: in the last episode, when everyone was roasting the play about them, Sokka said “but the effects were decent”. That was a joke about this movie.
“There’s no way it can be that bad” Famous last words 😂
Gabriele: You're like the son I never had!
Lu Ten: Am I a joke to you?
You were warned. Many many times but you wouldn't listen and you paid the price. 😂😂😂
9:21 I'm trying SO HARD NOT TO LAUGH TOO HARD. My mums sleeping next to me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Their reaction when the single rock flew by had me in tears! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"It can't be that bad" it is that bad, it is worse. don't worry the four-part finale will restore your love. thanks for listening to us and watching this abomination before the finale. Your final memories of this series should be pleasant ones. Until you watch Legend of Korra, of course. and read the comics. 💘
I love how so many reactors are always like “it can’t be that bad right??” And sadly… yes I can be that bad lol
The Legend of Korra is 1000x better than this movie.
@@hilarymajor3983 Anything that displays the slightest bit of storytelling competence is better than this

I still have PTSD from this movie. I'm definitely going to need therapy after this reaction😭😭😭
It looked like the CGI animators and the earthbenders had a ....rocky relationship
COME ON, I WAS SO HYPED FOR ZOZINS COMET PART 1
Oh shoot that is coming up
I'm waiting for them to start Korra so bad 😩
The worst has to come first before the best
Im glad they got this mess out of their system. I mean imagine watching this abomination after riding the high of that finale. Let the joy be pure.😇
@@yay2549 true
I have never seen the movie in its entirety. This movie broke the number one unspoken rule: Show, don’t tell! I don’t know how or why the scene with the six Earthbenders doing their own dance to move a little rock made through the editing process. And I didn’t like how Zuko just grabbed a random kid to ask him about his banishment. Zuko from the show would never do that! Zuko’s scar is basically nonexistent, which is quite something, considering how big Zuko’s scar from the show is.
It made it through the editing process because of awful budget management. And when I say awful I mean there was none.
@@zrc1514 Are you telling me that blowing half your budget to film the first 15 minutes in greenland isn't the pinnacle of careful conservation of resources? I am shocked. Shocked I tell you.

"They're white" is the theme of this movie
The gAang said at the end of the ember island players "That wasnt a good play. ill say. no kidding. horrible. you said it. but the effects were decent!" and that about sums it up for the movie
I told you it's an ABOMINATION 😭😭💀
I nearly peed myself when you denied Prince Zuko! Dev Patel is an amazing actor, but he is not Prince Zuko. Not one single actor in this was good casting. I think Uncle Iroh and Aang were the worst casting mistakes, though. I have a cat named Iroh. He looks more like Uncle Iroh than this man.
Aww Iroh the kitteh
Aang isnt even an actor is the problem. He was the closest thing to a 12 year old boy that was proficient in the martial arts they wanted for the airbending in the movie.
@@DragonMoth34 I mean to be fair the acting was pretty bad all around, actors or not.
Your cat drink tea?
@@DragonMoth34 i feel like some acting classes and better directing could’ve fixed that tbh. Even if he wasn’t the best performance, he could’ve made a passable aang
3:41 that’s pretty much the movie right there 😂😂
All I’m saying is thank God they didn’t have toph the deaf bandit
“It can’t be that bad” famous first lines 😂
that was hilarious thank you for suffering for my enjoyment. love you guys
If shamalamadingdong was not the director, this could’ve been at the least, a decent stand alone
and the hair… he supposed to be bald with the ponytail because it has a meaning in the firenation😭😭
Man said eeroh😭
9:30 no bald head, no bad pony tail, no scar, no fed and grey fire nation armor. No, that’s not Zuko.
22:02 “This is just going to be a bunch of guys [reacting to men doing a backstreet boys dance routine just to levitate a rock toward the enemies at the speed of an electric wheelchair], isn't it?” Sokka: “That's what I paid for.”
They say Ko the Face Stealer was the cameraman in this movie...which is why everyone is stiff and expressionless ahaha X )
I told youuuuu, it's all the doing of trolls. You guys suffered enough and then some - I forgive you, haha. As Sokka would say, there were a couple of decent effects, and Yue was like the only actor worth watching. I think her actress voices a character in the Legend of Korra.
Ohhhh god, Ko makes a movie; THIS IS A HEADCANON FOR ME NOW- XD

Aww yisss this is what I live for. Only 7min in and enjoying my chips while yall point out everything that's wrong with disgust (:
I say this every time, it's good they used wrong pronunciations because they're no where near the actual character. And for missing key moments or key lines is good too, so those special memories don't get dragged down by this film.
This is the funniest thing to react to before the finale!
