Johnny Cash is among a handful of 20th Century artists who have achieved almost mythological status. His influence is felt in almost every genre of music. His best hits include; "Man In Black", " Ring Of Fire", "I Walk The Line", " Sunday Morning Coming Down", "Hey, Porter", " Hurt", "Daddy Sang Bass", " Don't Take Your Guns To Town". "Long Black Veil", " Get Rhythm". His live album "At Folsom Prison" is a landmark recording in music history.
Johnny and June were meant to be with each other. She's from the legendary Carter family and he clawed his way up from poverty. You can tell they were having fun singing this. Always loved it when they sang together.
Every time I drive down Interstate 195 and I approach the exit to Jackson, New Jersey I start singing this song. My wife just looks out the window and stares at the trees.
The events and lives leading up to these two finally getting together and having a child together is almost unexplainable and has been movie worthy. This song and any they performed together is a treasure..
They are singing about the town I have lived all my life in....Jackson Tennessee. His drummer... WS Holland and his good friend Carl Perkins lived here. Some folks think they meant Mississippi but I assure you it's here in Tennessee.
My dad was born and raised there and I have lots of relatives in the surrounding area. My favorite place to visit! Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. Johnny Cash always reminds me of my dad and that side of the family!
Im also From Jackson!! Actually Met WS Holland a few times as a teenager while working at Hub City Battery in South Jackson. And yes, this song is absolutely about Jackson, Tennessee!
Perfect. Nice to see you two have an appreciation for authentic country music. Old school country artists are just the best in my opinion. Lots more to explore in this category.
Super sweet song, so glad you did it! Both great singers and performers, Johnny and June were married for 35 years, a couple of lovebirds till the day she died.
You should’ve seen her when she was really feeling her singing voice she had been singing while she was raising the new baby. That’s why if you notice Johnny was trying to encourage her and when it came time for her growling gargling part you could see Johnny tell the drummer to kick it up a notch! This song was not written by them but they are the ones that made it famous and in my opinion no one can do it like them. He used to listen to her on the radio when he was a kid and she was a kid she used to sing with her parents band her mom had a very famous band and it was on all the country radios when Johnny Cash was a little. He always had a crush on her and she used to tour with Elvis Presley, Elvis was a big Johnny Cash fan they came up together made their first albums together and Elvis was always listening to Johnny Cash records And she asked Elvis who is that you’re listening to and he said Johnny Cash they ended up touring together her and Johnny and he told her he says one day I’m going to marry you and sure enough he did… She died first. And when she died you could see John was finished being on this planet and all he said was he wanted to be with her and he followed her weeks later…
June was a daughter of legendary “Mother” Maybelle Carter. She was a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer and a comedian, plus she performed with her family. When Johnny fell in love with her, he was still married to his first wife. She waited, because June didn’t mess around. As others have said, June straightened Johnny out. They were great together musically and as a married couple. Great song, great reaction!
June was from a singing family act called teh Carter family. When she married Johnny, she became June Carter Cash, They loved each other till they died.
Lee Hazelwood with Nancy Sinatra had a semi-hit with this before this version came out. but this was a huge country hit for them , they collaborated a lot together on tour and on record and were married until both of their deaths just 6 months apart from each other.. she met Johnny through an Elvis connection as she was a singer in Elvis's entourage in the 50s on tour. and Cash & Elvis were great friends. early on.. She knew nothing of Cash, but Elvis would play her Johnny's records (he loved Cash's deep voice) and eventually they met at the Grand Ol Opry & married after Johnny's divorce from his first wife. She is from a musical heritage , The Carter Family, country, gospel singers.. Fine Reaction..
When I was a kid I loved watching them sing together on TV. It was so obvious how much they loved each other. Do more of them singing together and you'll see what I mean.

one of my favorite lines of all time, "When I breeze into that city, people gonna stoop and bow, all them women gonna make me, teach em what they dont know how".
Man, do I love June Carter Cash. Everybody knows and admires Johnny, but June is something else. The recordings of her and her sisters with mother Maybelle, her recordings with Johnny, and her solo stuff.....plus she was a hell of a songwriter, too. (The moment that always hits me hardest in Johnny's "Hurt" video is when we see June looking mournfully at her husband from behind. Just breaks my heart.)
One of the most beautiful love storys i've ever seen. Love Johnny Cash since I was a young Boy. Love his style and songs that inspire so many artists around the world. The movie is wonderfull too
Johnny Cash is one of those unique artists who has not only lasted the test of time but has cross over appeal like none other. I know hard core metal heads who think Johnny can do no wrong, he is one of them. Johnny has this appeal because he is 100% authentic, there never was any b.s. about him nor any pretence, he was what his was warts and all, people admire that and that will always resonate.
My two favorite people in the whole world. When she would come to the school to have her child's back she looked like an avenging angel. Lol. She really was beautiful inside and out. He was a good man as well. He was rough when she met him. Love can work miracles. ( As a teen I lived in. Hendersonville where they did. It was a much smaller town then. They stopped at the same grocery store as the rest of us. There was only one there. Lol)
The King and Queen of country, with one of their playful songs - the song is basically about a couple who are still together but are constantly fighting, and each one threatens the other with "I'm gonna go down to Jackson and I'm gonna get myself a REAL lover!" Johnny and June were made for each other - they had a sometimes stormy relationship, but it's the stuff of legend. There's even a movie based on it - "Walk the Line".
June Carter was a real character. She was funny and talented. There are wonderful videos on RUclips of a young June from the early days of tv, with and without the Carter family. She was very animated and had a wonderful singing voice.
June Carter Cash. She sang as part of a group before she married Johnny. The Carter Family has a lot of good music including the ever popular song Wildwood Flower.
I love that you guys did this song. This is what I was raised with. When I was younger, I never liked any of this music but as I got older I learned to appreciate it. My father used to tell me that when I get older I would learn to love country. I have learned to love some so hes right a little bit. This is some of what I learned to love.
Jackson is as close to we get to a true marital fight in music. They are not feeling each other then and broaching the line of being mouthy to each other.
June was a member of the Carter Family, one of the very first recording stars in country music. They date back to the twenties. In those days you had to go to one of the few recording studios which were all in the big cities on the east cost. About that time someone developed a device that allowed producers to go out into the country to find talent, which they could bring bring back to the studio bosses. The Carter Family was one of the groups that the scouts discovered. They were literally among the first recording stars of country music. They became known through the new medium of radio.
June Carter came from the illustrious Carter Family, a singing family from Appalachia who were country music superstars. Right there before and during the birth of what came to be called "Country." (As opposed to the Appalachian folk music it grew out of.) June's mother, Maybelle Carter, was a guitar OG, largely responsible for bringing guitar into folk and country music as a primary/lead instrument. She maybe invented but at least popularized the "Carter scratch" which was a boom-chick-boom-chick method of playing the guitar that became a standard in folk, country, and rock music. (You can hear it in this song.) Without Maybelle Carter, or somebody like her, popularizing the guitar, there would be no Jimi Hendrix.
Check out Johnny Cash and Roy Clark doing "Folsom Prison Blues". Hilarious Also Check out Roy Clark and Little Jimmy Henley doing "Orange Blossom Special" Amazing performance.
This song is a classic, but it's also an example of something that has almost disappeared: duets. In Country music, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn sang a lot of popular duets -- Louisian Woman Mississippi Man is one -- and they did a verson of Twitty's It's Only Make Believe from when he was a 50's Rock & Roll Star. George Jones and Tammy Wynette sang a lot of duets -- Golden Ring is a famous one. You should also check out Otis Redding and Carla Thomas singing Tramp.
I love this song. It has such a playful, comedic tone to it. It's definitely an argument, Lex is right. I love June Carter Cash's cover of May The Circle Be Unbroken. It's so haunting.
The song is Will the Circle Be Unbroken and the live studio recording version by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is awesome. Featuring MANY icons no longer with us.
Funny how You will notice tiny differences between past and present. I have no clue why this stuck out to me. When she mentioned that they had a new little baby boy. Everybody sat quietly and politely until she finished her train of thought and ended the sentence and then they applauded. Today they would've started applauding before she even finished telling about their new baby boy. And THAT would be considered the polite thing to do.
There is just so much fantastic Johnny Cash Out there. But them singing together is such a treat. She was so damn good. So damn good. And in real life, no she didn't put up with his bullshit at all. At all.
Someone mentioned it already, but again, do yourselves a favor and watch Walk the Line. Johnny Cash was a struggling rock-and-roll artist in the 50's that morphed into rock-a-billy and country. Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny Cash. First time I started watching the movie I thought ...daheck? How could they cast Phoenix as Johnny Cash? About 10 minutes into his performance, I was thinking... this IS Johnny Cash!
June Carter was a country star in her own right even before Johnny Cash made it big. She was part of the Carter Family which had multiple country hits in the late 40s and 50s.
if you didn't see the bio movie, Johnny was one that broke through with Sun Records at the same time as Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison (Wilbury) Charlie Rich (the silver fox), and Jerry Lee Lewis aka the killa. Johnny was married. Virginia's pioneers of country music were the Carter family. Country music royalty and June was the pretty joker of the family. She was married as well. Nothing could keep the kindred spirits apart as they were married later. Johnny partnered with Rick Ruben and released several new songs. How good was the Johnny and Rick partnership? Johnny would go on to win the Country Music Award just shortly after he was buried. One of the songs that garnered a lot of attention was an original song by the Industrial band Nine Inch Nails. Johnny covered "Hurt" and made it his own. Cash shared his talent with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings in the Super Group "The Highway Men". Cash singing at Folsom for the inmates is a jewel that everyone should see once. I believe he was an ordained minister late in his life.
June was one from a HUGE country music family... The Carters. I believe they cut the first ever country album and it was in a studio in Bristol, Tennessee! Look up Carter Family! 👍
Y'all should watch the movie WALK THE LINE starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. They actually do the majority of the singing in the movie and are good. Story about their tumultuous life and enduring love til the day they died. A really good movie and Lex's " they hate each other but love each other so much" is really close to the true story. Try and check it out soon or when Lex gets to the point she's having a hard time getting off of the couch.
It's Jackson Tennessee, west of Nashville on I 40. June was one of the Carter Family , she did the comic relief and wore a mini skirt with western boots. Check out the Carter Family that is real country music. Thanks my friends.
I take it as saying when they fight, he is like "I'm gonna go to town and find a woman who appreciates me," and she is like "Well, go ahead then," because she knows he won't really do it.
This song was a hit single by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, sung exactly the same. You should have found this especially interesting since you reviewed Johnny singing "Hurt" just over a year ago.
When God created Eve he called her ezer (helper). A more accurate translation is rescuer or savior. June was truly that for Johnny Cash. He really did Walk The Line for her.
if the Movie "Walk the Line" is close to accurate, she was everything to him, ever since he first heard her voice as a child on the radio. He married someone else but it was always June on his mind. I recommend the movie to anyone who would be curious about Johnny's life.
Have you ever heard of the Carter Family? Generally considered the "first family" of country music. They influenced all of folk, country, bluegrass, Americana, and even to some extent blues and rock. June was a daughter of the Carters and married Johnny after a couple of failed marriages. Their marriage lasted until death.
I agree that "Sunday Morning Coming Down' is a definite listen. Great story song that was written by Kris Kristofferson. There's a cool version of this song, "Jackson" by Hillbilly Moon Explosion featuring Sparky Phillips it also has a cool video!
I love this song, its so cute with them both and I love the line go ahead you big talking man , go ahead and see If I care. They were great together, thats a real love story there , need to watch the movie I walk the LIne you will love it
I’m not really a Johnny Cash fan but I do really like this song. I believe he had been asking her to marry him for awhile and she kept saying no. Until one night, while singing this song, he proposed one last time and refused to sing until she agreed to marry him. THere on stage.
They were true soulmates. Just months after June passed Johnny followed her. June and her father ran a drug dealer off Johnny's property. It was before they were married. June wrote Ring of fire describing how it felt when she met him. They were both married and knew they couldn't act on their feelings at that time
The soundtrack to the walk the line is worth a listen Joaquin Phoenix and Reece Witherspoon both singing the songs and their version of this is excellent.

The Johnny Cash show was a big hit when I was growing up. I don't think I missed one.
"Johnny Cash doesn't argue with women; he tells them what it is."
🤣🤣🤣
Odds are good there's a Jackson in every state.
Far away eyes - Rolling Stones. Who wouldn’t want to see Mick Jagger wearing flannel and singing country. It’s on their Some Girls album
One of the best movies ever…Walk the Line
I take it as saying when they fight, he is like "I'm gonna go to town and find a woman who appreciates me," and she is like "Well, go ahead then," because she knows he won't really do it.
This song was a hit single by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, sung exactly the same. You should have found this especially interesting since you reviewed Johnny singing "Hurt" just over a year ago.
yes, Jackson, MS. That's the "big city" in Mississippi
I saw them just before johnny got sick this song was the high point of the show they were wonderful
June belted this out!!
Johnny was so in love with June - he died not long after she did.
Awe what a sweet couple 💖💖💖👏🔥🔥🔥👏👏💞
When God created Eve he called her ezer (helper). A more accurate translation is rescuer or savior. June was truly that for Johnny Cash.
He really did Walk The Line for her.
Amen to that!
if the Movie "Walk the Line" is close to accurate, she was everything to him, ever since he first heard her voice as a child on the radio. He married someone else but it was always June on his mind. I recommend the movie to anyone who would be curious about Johnny's life.
Yes, Jackson, MS.
Two cool couples
June is one funny gal ! Saw Johnny in 1968 and of course June and the Statler brothers, not sure who had more fun the audience or them !
This song was about my hometown in Tennessee!
True Love. A Princess Bride.
I agree that "Sunday Morning Coming Down' is a definite listen. Great story song that was written by Kris Kristofferson. There's a cool version of this song, "Jackson" by Hillbilly Moon Explosion featuring Sparky Phillips it also has a cool video!
Another hit version is by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. Also worth a listen.
First couple of country music no offense to George and Tammy.
I love this song, its so cute with them both and I love the line go ahead you big talking man , go ahead and see If I care. They were great together, thats a real love story there , need to watch the movie I walk the LIne you will love it
❤❤❤
You should react to the Johnny cash cover of rusty cage by sound garden. Such an amazing cover, you would love it
I’m not really a Johnny Cash fan but I do really like this song.
They were both married and knew they couldn't act on their feelings at that time
Jackson Tennessee
Y'all should watch "Walk the Line" before baby gets here, while you can. 😄 It's the story of Johnny's life, and it's super interesting.
June Carter's grandmother basically invented country music
The soundtrack to the walk the line is worth a listen Joaquin Phoenix and Reece Witherspoon both singing the songs and their version of this is excellent.
