Excel Sort Column by Numbers in Ascending/Descending Order (2020)

Sort a column in Excel by numbers in an ascending or descending order? That's simple. In this tutorial you'll learn how to sort a numeric column by the cell value which is basically a simple number. Note that the column need to contain real numbers and not string/text which looks like numbers.
This tutorial for #sort #numbers in Excel should work for Excel 2007, Excel 2010, Excel 2013, Excel 2016, Excel 2019 and also Office 365. This also works with Microsoft Office on a Mac and also with open source software such as OpenOffice or Libre Office.

It could be that your column has some sort of weird formatting. If the column is formatted as Number or General, then it should work.

Usually Excel recognizes the heading since it has characters while the number don't have characters. But just in case Excel is not recognizing it on your end, simply click on "Sort & Filter" > "Custom Sort" and in the new window check the box in the top right corner "My data has headers".

I guess along your selection of cells, you have some merged and some not? This is the only explanation that I'd have for that.

then it might be the case, that Excel doesn't recognize the 2 columns belonging together. Make sure that there is no empty column in between. You can also try to convert it to a "real" table by selecting all content that should go into the table, then go to the "Insert" tab and select "Table".

I think the system will follow front numbers.
Eg. 1,25 then 1,28 then 1,29 then 22, 23, 24 and so on…

Depends a bit on what cells the formulas are referencing to. But I'd recommend to simply try it out and if you encounter any errors, reverse it with CTRL+Z
