  • Why Ride a DCT Motorcycle - Exploring the Benefits
If you're a motorcycle enthusiast, you've likely heard of the Honda DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) technology. This innovation has taken the riding experience to a whole new level, and for good reason. Let's delve into why you should consider owning a DCT motorcycle, specifically the Honda NC750X DCT,.
Effortless Shifting: The Honda DCT transmission eliminates the need for manual clutch operation. Whether you're navigating city traffic or embarking on an adventurous off-road journey, the DCT technology seamlessly handles gear changes. Exeter Rider's review on the 2021 Honda NC750X DCT highlights how this translates into a stress-free and enjoyable ride.
Smooth Riding: Honda DCT ensures exceptionally smooth gear changes. The transitions are quick and precise, maintaining a constant flow of power to the wheels. This leads to reduced jolts and jerks, providing a more comfortable and refined riding experience, even in stop-and-go traffic.
Versatility: The versatility of the DCT system is one of its standout features. It caters to a wide range of riders, whether you're a novice or an experienced motorcyclist. The ability to switch between automatic and manual modes gives you full control over your riding style. As seen in Exeter Rider's 2021 Honda NC750X DCT review, you can adapt to any situation effortlessly.
Enhanced Safety: The DCT system contributes to safer riding. With both hands on the handlebars and no clutch to manage, you can react more quickly to unexpected road situations. This feature is particularly crucial when riding through Exeter's varied road conditions.
Honda Reliability: When you invest in a Honda DCT motorcycle, you're choosing a brand known for its quality and durability. Honda's commitment to excellence extends to their DCT technology, ensuring a dependable and long-lasting riding experience.
Adventure Ready: Honda DCT motorcycles, like the Africa Twin or Goldwing, are adventure-ready. Whether you're embarking on a long-distance tour or exploring off-road trails in the Exeter region, the DCT system lets you focus on the thrill of the ride without the distraction of constant gear shifting.
Fuel Efficiency: The DCT transmission optimizes gear changes for fuel efficiency. Riding a DCT-equipped Honda, such as the NC750X, can result in improved mileage, which is not only cost-effective but also better for the environment.
Low Maintenance: With fewer mechanical components involved, DCT motorcycles generally require less maintenance than traditional manual counterparts. This translates to more time on the road and less time in the workshop.
In summary, choosing a DCT motorcycle, like the Honda NC750X DCT, offers an array of benefits for riders in Exeter and beyond. The combination of Honda's renowned engineering and the innovation of DCT technology results in a smoother, safer, and more enjoyable riding experience. Exeter Rider's Honda DCT motorcycle reviews on RUclips provide valuable insights into the practical advantages of this technology, making it clear why a DCT motorcycle is a worthwhile investment for anyone who loves to ride.

Like many others have commented, I fell into the “I wouldn’t have one of those” category. Then I tried one and as a result bought a new 750X DCT about 18 months ago. 13,000 miles later and I’m totally converted. It suits my riding style and the type of roads I enjoy up here in Northumberland.
It’s not for everyone I know, but it absolutely suits me.

I just got my 2023 NC750X (DCT) and find it more fun and relaxing than a manual. The bike pulls really well upto legal speeds which is all I need.
Its quick of the line thanks to the DCT, much better than you expect for a modest 58hp.
I think the low down torque really helps, its a real world motorcycle for those that dont care to pose or ride at stupid speeds.

Love your vlogs on the NC750 dct. The dct is a brilliant bit of tech. There are always differing opinions as to why a biker would want an auto, usually centering on the 'involvement' factor. I have been riding since I was 16 -back in 1964, just having moved from an MT10, to an MT09 SP. However, I have recently suffered a condition which means I cannot move my left foot to change gear, and have to consider if I will ever recover this ability. I have absolutely no wish to stop riding, so the NC750 dct would be a salvation for me. Can't wait to be in a position to try one! It may not be an MT09SP, but if it keeps me on the road, its a no brainer!

The help it provides to a riders disability is not often mentioned or thought of. I ended up with a dropped left foot, after an accident, and have struggled for 50 years with trying to manage left foot changes. It had got to the situation two years ago that arthritis was effecting my right hip, due to my changing technique, and I was unable to even get my leg over the saddle. I tried an NT1100 DCT and immediately felt at home with the DCT and plumped for the NC750 version as the best choice for me. A bit of concentration on keeping your clutch hand firmly on the bar, and resisting the temptation to blip the throttle, and it soon becomes totally natural, even swapping to "normal" bikes is no problem. It has been a game changer for my situation and I'm sure you will find the same. Another great benefit I found is that it seriously frees up more brain space (we all need that at our advanced ages) making the riding more enjoyable. Good luck, hope all goes well and you make the right decision for you.

As you say at junctions it is much easier as you are ready to nip out and there is a lot less chance of stalling the bike which with a tall heavy bike often leads to dropping the bike. Once you get used to it and start to discover how to make the best of DCT it gets even better.

No chance of stalling it anywhere as I’m sure you are all aware most euro 4 & 5 bikes run very ‘Lean’ so higher revs & clutch control is vital. It’s a shame more manufacturers don’t take a leaf out of the mighty H & offer alternative models but stably most continue producing safe bet models that then know will sell.

As a 30+ year motorcycle rider, I was confused and uneducated motorcyclist, as to how it (the DCT) all works. Not until I tried riding my friends CTX 700 with DCT, did I understand the overall comfort and benefits of not having to do any of the shifting. Literally, within 15 minutes of riding her motorcycle, I decided that I wanted a motorcycle with this technology. I purchased and rode a used NC700X with DCT one week later. I found it extremely utilitarian and economical. Within a year of having that motorcycle, I sold it. But I vowed to buy a new one should Honda ever produce one in blue. In 2019 I bought the NC750X w/DCT to add it to my collection. It is the one motorcycle that I always feel like I have ridden all my life. I wish Honda would reproduce and upgrade their discontinued CTX 700 w/DCT. But it is probably a good thing they don't, because I would probably end up buying that too. Great content as always. Ride safe.

I had a 21 plate dct and in the city I loved it, open road and mountain roads not so, despite paddles. My itch was scratched but wont have another. I love twist and go scooters and understand the drive and belt system. However I started finding a few reports of dct issues and what became obvious the honda technicians at dealers were left wanting on many occasions. On auto cars generally nowadays if it fails usually a new box. My friend just paid £6k for vw transporter replacement. I know there are other foreign vloggers with many many miles on dcts but for me hit the panic button after what I had read. Plug the dct into a computer and hope for the best. Also dct are electronically controlled. These are not for old school mechanic repairs should they fail. Nice to ride. I like car autos but won’t have a dct or dsg only a true torque converter type box. PSA group autos have gone back from troublesome electronic autos to torque converters. Even my 21 plate could not go up the devils staircase in s wales. The steep sharp hairpins confused the box. Tried resets (thanks to yr vlog😁). Horses for courses and glad to be back on a manual. I can defo see city angle though cos you can just watch and steer. My daughters live in Birmingham and holy hell to navigate. Great to have different tastes. My brother is in NZ and said 99% their cars autos. He also said the garages know how to repair them. Where I live used to be 6 motorcycle shops now nearest 25 miles away and honda. Also car garages leave a lot to be desired in actual engineers availability. Plug it in and pray.

i learned on a car that was manual, i learned motorcycles that is manual. can drive and ride both. I am also an artist that learned it with my hands and painting and drawing and then the computer came out and everyone is an artist. that was not true, look where the art world has gone in the last 35 years, trash and no one knows how to design anything anymore, just produce and get it out, quality left a long time ago. same with driving, know how to ride it manual and become a master at it and then go easy mode. i will guess if i am still alive in 20 years, i will need a automatic bike too. basics are needed first with almost everything. bad drivers become bad riders, we all are in trouble. just me.

I absolutely know what you are talking about. I was like the ones that dismiss any kind of automatic. But my short story is that I had 5 years pause without motorbikes and returned 5 years ago primarily as scooter and maxi scooter rider. It relaxes the mind and body. I use to have left hand pains in heavy traffic too. I live in 1,2 million city and that traffic is far far different from the time I got my license in early 2000's .. As kids, we use to play football on the empty streets, now is cars upon cars upon cars everywhere you look. To add, DCT is not too dissimilar to a CVT or torque converter. The end results is similar. Moto Guzzi had automatic with torque converter in the 70's /V100 convert/. Aprilia today makes automatics too but they are not that known as Hondas. Also to add about scooters' cvt... People not use to ride a scooter cvt are thinking that they stay at constant rpms per speed but that is not the case. They use clever 4 way mechanical balance.. The torques from the engine and the wheel, the roller weights and the torque spring. You give it more throttle, it lower itself down, you let go the throttle, it gears up. Again if you ride uphill or downhill with adjust itself down or up. Too long of a comment but to add more. Most conventional motorbike riders like big torqie bikes exactly for the reason that they don't have the need to change gears so often as a small bikes and they don't even realized it.

I bought a 2023 NC750X DCT in April this year, thinking I would love the DCT. I have to say this was not the case. The problem is not the automatic changing of gears, its the snatchiness of the flybywire throttle. I found it would jump away at traffic lights or when goung slow as in parking. I know I am not the only one who has found this. My mate has exactly the same problem on his NT1100. If you have a clutch you are in control of the bike, you can always pull the clutch in quickly to avoid issues. With the DCT all you can do is brake, and i have found the wrist action in doing this can exaserbate the jumping forwatd situation. I have just traded the NC750 for a Triumph Bonneville T120. This also has a fly by wire throttle, but at least it also has a clutch.
Would be interested to hear if you, or others have found similar problems. The NC750X was my dream bike, but proved a let down for me. Probably should have bought one with a clutch 🙂.

I gotta say, I was skeptical at first, but went for it anyway. I did every bit of due diligence before and after buying my bike, a 2020 Africa Twin DCT. I watched Brett Tkacs' video about DCT off roading, and I went on the Honda Adventure Experience 2 day course, insisting on having the DCT bike for that. The first 10 minutes are unusual, I'll say that. Brett shows that you can use the rear brake as a kind of clutch substitute - when the DCT senses the brake is on at low speeds & revs it will declutch a little & let it slip. You don't want to overdo this: there's a guy in the US who did motogymkhana on his & burned out his clutch in a few weeks, and Honda gave him short shrift, wouldn't replace it under warranty, but motogymkhana is pretty extreme stuff. What I found on the off road course was that yes, there's a slightly increased risk of whisky throttle, so you have to be pretty diligent on your throttle grip being light & screwdriver-like rather than barbell-like, and get a real feel for the throttle control. I never got much wheelspin on mud or gravel with it - the uphill shale slopes were difficult but I think the manual bikes had the same problem, and further practice would have yielded results. Riding in traffic was easy, and the open road stuff it just ate up - downhill, you get engine braking assisting you when you start dragging the brakes, it'll downshift for you nicely. All in all, it's lovely. I can really see it being *great* on the Goldwing.

Super vid Mr Ex. I would need a lot more kissing if I were to get a DCT. A DCT would slow me down, as if you ride a lot you don't even have to think about the gears you just know, you feel the bike as it were. Not trying to be cliched or arrogant it's just what tends to happen. So sorry to disagree with you, the vid was still good and I can see why many people would want DCT.

I much prefer the scooter type control layout of the Forza 750 over the AT and NC that just do away with the clutch lever.
One negative - the bike is effectively disabled if battery voltage falls too low as the DCT wont work, so even if you can jump start the bike you won't be able to get the bike out of neutral. Happened to me on my Forza.

I can see the need and maybe the appeal of a good DCT. I think people with hand and foot issues would especially find the DCT essential. Someone living and riding in urban areas probably might find the DCT useful. Older riders might also might see the DCT extending their riding career.
I guess others might just enjoy the DCT so there certainly is a place for DCTs. Unfortunately manufacturers sometime have shown willingness to eliminate manual shifting and are starting to default to DCTs as the only option which I do not support.
