When I wrote this song”world around me” I was inspired by Loony Times music by Carl Stalin. Imagine a Bugs Bunny and Porky the Pig dancing routine. It’s still hard to play cause the riff is so unnatural. Lol!!! I wrote over half the songs from our first 6 albums, Tape Head, bulbous and manic moonlight we wrote all songs together. And on Ear candy and XV I wrote 90% of the tunes on those albums. I love working with Ty and he is an amazing player and song writer. ❤️😊Thanks for what you do!!
Hi Dug. In 1988 I rode my bike to the record shop with the money I saved from mowing lawns. I bought Out of the Silent Planet because the cover looked cool. When I got home I put it on the turntable and cranked it up. OMG. It sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before. Heavy and delicate at the same time. I was hooked. I became a student of your music. Of course back then with no internet, I just had to check for new releases at the record shop as often as I could get there. I’ve seen you guys three times over the years. I met you at a show in Las Vegas. I was very awkward because I was star struck. There I was standing there with a musical titan. You were very receptive even though I was stammering and nervous. King’s X has been a deep, deep well of music and lyrics for me. You guys made my musical history much more interesting and magical. I just listened to Pleiades three time in a row yesterday. Thank you for your work and artistry. I am still astounded by it all. Peace, Kevin
"Criminally Underrated" is exactly right. I feel the modern virtuoso players are just now hitting what KX has been doing for decades. Prisoner is a perfect example. That riff is about to turn 30 and it sounds as fresh as ever... best drum fill of all time in Over My Head before lead... I put it up against In the Air Tonight all day! Thanks Dave... great work and great tribute.
I've seen them live at least a dozen times and hope they play Prisoner.... I'm still waiting. Probably because there are two distinctive guitar parts. Acoustic and electric.
Awesome. Ty Tabor is a monster!!!! Criminally underrated player. Uses chords like Dean DeLeo Way before Dean put them on tape. Chord wizard. Dean is awesome too. Just incredible player. Keep up the great work David, youre the best🤘🎸👍🤘
My favorite bands are Rush and King's X. And in situations where it's "pick one", I always give the nod to King's X because they need the shout the most. I've seen them more than any other artist a few fold. When I was about 16, a friend of mine brought Extreme Pornograffitti and King's X Faith, Hope, Love to the music store where I worked and said, "you have to hear these!" Now, Extreme I was familiar with, and yes, I was blown away. But when he put on FHL...🤯 We Are Finding Who We Are came on. When the vocals kicked in with 3 part harmony..."Forever is a mountain...we've yet to climb..." I was hooked! Ever since then, I was all in on these guys. I catch every show I can and the guys are so down to earth and approachable. I'm always happy when someone gives them a well deserved shout.
Kings-X was a major partner and influence for early pantera. The tone of Ty and their hugeeeee sound live gave them a strong reputation in Texas. They are criminally under rated and way ahead of their time....truly unique. If you have to pair this guys with some one else....maybe Savatage...maybe Primus...maybe voivoid.....but also they are in a different section of prog. Great episode!!!!!
Can't believe i missed this!! So glad you did kings X again Great choice of songs for part 2, for anybody who's interested Ty Tabor has his own patreon page where he does break downs of his songs and gear talk etc.
I was pumped when i saw that there was a King's X part two video. My favorite band of all time hands down. You nailed Ty's timing and feel on all of these. Keep up the great work!
This was awesome. I'll admit it's been a while since I listened to King's X, I'd forgotten how much I love this band. I'm not sure I was fully ready when I first listened to Dogman as a teenager, but it had aged so well. Thanks for this video!
Can we start a rally for a part 3? They have some fantastic stuff from more recent albums as well. Would love to hear some stuff from Dogman and beyond. Ear Candy - Mr Bulbous, Ogre Tones and even the latest has some phenomenal stuff.
Great video man. One thing I don't think you mentioned, but you sure demonstrated, is Ty's touch. His selective use of palm mutes to achieve groove, and the vibrato he puts on chords as well as single notes. Those are the things I love most about his playing. You've definitely mastered those elements too.
King's X and Saga are 2 bands who've never received the recognition they deserve for being such brilliant bands with beyond incredible levels of musicianship. Always good to see when they get some spotlight .... they deserve a bigger audience of listeners.
@@douglaspinnick I know dUg, sorry for the omission. I've got the Poundhound albums and all the KXM, which are awesome. Also, your Hendrix tribute is great. The dUg Pinnick Tech 21 NYC pedal is an amazing device, and you have the sickest bass sound I've ever heard. New Kings X album coming in 2022, I'm psyched to see you at the Stone Pony next tour! Rock on!
Thanks for this, best gift for Xmas I coulda asked for! I heard a story on Eddie Trunk (who used to work for KX label at the time ) about how King's X s label would get angry due to all of the bands and music industry types who would ask them for free CDs or tapes every time they released a new album. They said if they sold all the records they gave away to other band members they'd be Top 10 billboard!
Greatest band no one has heard of. Perfect balance of melody, lyrics, heaviness and creativity. God only knows why they weren’t huge. They were ahead of their time for sure. You can hear just about every other band being influenced by them- the only other band that had that influence was the Beatles before them
You bring up a great point about the mi7 and not the C7#9 (as is apparent in Hendrix, sometimes). I think people hear the #9 chord there is because the memory of the E note is so strong. Like a comet trail. The memory of pitches stick, if possible. Great content, as always!
Hell yes! I love King's X. Very underrated band. Ty is one of my favorite guitarist. I've learned so much from his style. Thank you Dave for another episode on the mighty Kings! *update* I've always played "far fay awary" in G/half setp down. That seems to me to be simplest way to play it (as far as simplicity). The way you play it (works) appears to be a bit more difficult, however, I may be wrong. I'd love to hear your take.
Omg I've loved Kings X and Ty Tabor for years now. Thanks for the lessons Dave...definitely an underrated band which I've said for years. Happy Holidays!
Couldn’t agree more. This band is underrated and not talked about enough. Great video! Would love to see a lesson on “Lost in Germany” by Kings X. Unrelated, but any chance of doing a BabyMetal video? Their guitar work is incredible🤘🏻
Fantastic band of top-tier musicians. I gotta have 7-8 of their CDs, starting with "Gretchen..." Thanks for doing this tutorial. I hear their influence on Soundgarden for sure, with all the Drop D stuff.
Dude - thank you for this. I have worked with the band for decades (I booked several big nightclubs for 30 years) - and this band always killed. You nailed it - thank you! Gonna send this to Dug now -
I grew up in the early to mid 80's and frankly hated most of the music of the time and mostly listened to classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush and Hendrix until I discovered King's X when I heard "Over My Head" in 1989 on MTV, then started to listen to Grunge when it broke a few years later in college in the early to mid-90's. It's ironic that no one put those bands together at all until more recently.
I already play the beginning of that Prisoner riff 'wrong' intentionally to get a bit of extra bounce, but never considered the possibility of what you do here being the right way. Will give it a try!
Love your videos, especially these King’s X and Ty Tabor ones. So criminally underrated. Off topic question, it looks like you replaced the bridge pickup in your Vela. What did you use? Thanks for all the cool lessons.
My favorite band of all time. They're by far the best live band I've ever seen. This is just my opinion, but I think one of the main reasons they've never been more popular, is because when they came out, they got labeled as a Christian band - due to the lyric content of a lot of their songs. So because of that, most secular stations wouldn't play them. They denied ever being a Christian band, so Christian stations wouldn't touch them either. Sad that a band as great as they are, gets shunned because they may, or may not have beliefs that are different from popular culture.
Hay brewster, Merry Christmas to you and the family. Radio is to blame for any band past or present making it plus the cost of putting your name out there. David, I have a great story about Ty and my wife I can tell but it's rather long. I don't mind writing it out, but only if you're interested as I have no intention of hijacking anything about this great video.
Has anyone here, Late Night included, figured out the best way to try and emulate Ty's impossible sound at all? If so, would love to to know how to do it... although this video sounds pretty close tbh

Props 2U Bro 4 keepin' up the King's X banner!
Thank you for hopefully introducing new listeners. King’s X as mentioned all over is the most underrated band in history imo.
Musicians loved KINGS X. I'm glad they were underrated, it's always fresh.
So many great songs and riffs from one of the greatest bands. Please do Chords of King's X Part III, IV, and V!
The first 5 albums are just a perfect run of riff rock with amazing melodies and songwriting. Unbeatable at their best 🤘🏼
Fantastic Dave
Fascinated by how much of a bad ass Ty really is. My favorite band. Thanks Brewski great channel man.🤘💪🎸

Heck yeah! Don't forget about Jerry, too! He does tons of backing vocals!

"Don't Be Late" by Saga is an epic tune!!!! Especially that guitar solo that starts with just two notes!
The live version of Careful Where You Step on In Transit is the best that band ever sounded. Amazing band.
This was cool. I like that you covered some of Over My Head, and Blag Flag. Maybe one day you get to the Dog Man album…
Excellent lesson man.
Im getting hooked in to this whole groove. So original.
Ty's riffs are totally badass and he's created so many exceptional chord progressions I'd put him up there with anyone, even Iommi
I wrote a lot of those songs. Just saying.

Awesome again ,David! I love King’s X, there are great songs on every album, and Ty is such a great player!
Thank you for covering King's X! Also, that's a beautiful PRS!
The World Around Me Baby!!!! Love me some Ty.
Very good call - a band that is hugely talented and deserves to be bought back into the public eye. Tremendous musicians throughout!
King's X. Awesome name for a band. Off to listen to some now and learn 'Over My Head'. Thanks!
Thanks for this!! I just got into a total Kings X stuper. Not only are those albums just recorded incredibly well, the music is incredible
I love your work. And I love KX. Since, like 95 when I first saw them.
Excellent tutorial. very incisive, Got and still have gretchen on vinyl since it came out. cheers David

Kings X was literally the reason I wanted to play guitar. I think Black Flag was the first song I ever learned.
Far, Far Away is so damn good! Thank you!
Awesome! You could just keep pulling from the album "Kings X" until you've done 'em all, and that would great by me!

You’re playing the hammer on to quickly in shot of love. There’s a delay
Came to the comments to see if anyone else caught it. It’s qtr notes Dave, and both picked, not the eighth note hammer-on feel you’re demonstrating.
Flippin’ ‘eck I thought we had broken up for Chrimbo and now more homework 📚 He’s a hard taskmaster 😂🇬🇧🎅
Don’t know why I always thought they were a Canadian band
Don't feel bad. I just found out they aren't from Texas!
Do the chords of Helmet the chords the choppy picking gives that helmet trademark sound
Still sings most of the lead vocals.
It's simple, they were always perceived as a christian rock band. They shouldn't of signed to a christian rock label, they didn't help themselves.
