    Great video Paul. Followed your instructions exactly and fixed my problem!! My slide would go out unevenly. It finally reached the point that it wouldn't move in or out - stuck part of the way out. From your video I also learned to never put the slide out half-way -- which I was guilty of doing many, many times (I would slide it out part-way to move around the travel trailer when it was in storage, etc.). Never do I was confusing the controller. Thanks for saving me a trip to the repair shop and possibly hundreds of dollars in unneeded repairs!

    Man, I'm glad they mounted my little box on the wall right under the slide so you can't get to it with the slide open or out. Reckon it's a good thing it's closed so I haul it to the shop. What a piece of garbage.

    This is my first Schwintek Slide. The sound that it makes each time it goes in or out gets me everytime. Anyone else have anxiety over this? I'm just so used to the quietness of the other types we've had.

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  2 года назад +2

      Motor noise is common on a Shwintek as the motors are located at the top corners of the slide. They are definitely more exposed than your average slide that would have motors beneath the floor or in compartments. So you will definitely hear them. The common sound most people get anxiety over is when the slide reaches the end going out or in. You generally hear binding and creaking, but this is normal to hear. At that point the motors are amping out and stopping any in or out function. -Todd

    Great idea! I has become apparent based on anecdotal stories that the operation of these slides are either designed poorly or constructed poorly. My Schwintek slide shear off a gear that got stuck in the slide rail. It is apparently a new issue for Rockwood. My expensive camper is now out for weeks during the best camping.

    A most excellent video, Todd! I always enjoy finding 'gems' like this for us do it yourself-ers, so much bad advice out there, especially for Schwinteks. I have been troubleshooting my slide out vibrating on extension but not retraction. Seems possible that one side is probably off by a turn or two, not enough to catch my eye. Our full wall slide on our Winnebago Sightseer started going out unevenly and underneath the refrigerator was starting to tear up so we stopped it and pulled it back in. Now we're afraid to try anything for fear of damaging anything further. Clearly what you recommend works for people, but it's confusing to to hear that you shouldn't stop a slide halfway and move it back in or vice versa because it messes it up, but then the solution is to move it in a little bit and back out. LOL

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I get the confusion, but the difference is when you are resyncing you are at the end of the track rather than the middle. This allows the motors to amp out at the end of the track and reset the tooth count. Just a difference in position on the rack itself. Sorry to hear your having some difficulties with it catching the floor. Any other questions I can answer to help resolve the issue for you?-Todd

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  2 года назад +1

      Well unfortunately it can be either one. There is no set motor one or two on the rack itself. If one of the motors is running at all, I just unplug one of the plugs from the main board and see if it still tries to run when you operate the slide. If it doesn’t then you have just identified which motor you unplugged. To confirm you can plug it back in and unplug the other motor. Otherwise you have to trace the wiring. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

      In those cases sometimes we have to pry the motor and break or bend the screw. It’s not ideal and can cause some damage. I would suggest bringing it to a dealer. You may have an issue with the harnesses as well. Can always run a test harness through a window and see if that makes any progress.

    I have a slide that when I extend it, only the left motor operates and when I retract only the right one operates. Unfortunately, the controller to this slide appears to be an older model (part #366701)(two other slides on the 5th wheel of newer controllers) and it does not have any LED lights on it. Slide went out slanted and the only way I could bring it back in was to remove the left motor, does this sound like the controller to you? Thank you for your video on removing the motor, it helped me get my slide back in. Thanks

      Very happy that the video helped out and got you guys out of a jam. That part number would actually be a power gear system. Similar, but different systems. I don't have a video done for those yet, but if you reinstall the controller and swap the two motor wires, then try to operate and see if the other motor works, that can tell you if it is a motor issue or board issue by process of elimination.

    Great video Todd. I have two questions after the first procedure failed. I would like to try the manual override and understand that I will have to control how far out or in the unit goes. My questions are: After completing the manual override, will the controller reset on its own so that it's no longer in override mode? If not, how do I get it back to automatic mode? Second question, does manual override usually correct the alignment so that the slide out goes out straight?

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  Год назад +2

      Thank you glad it can help. Great questions.
      Yes the controller will automatically reset itself. I believe it takes 30-60 seconds, you will notice the green and red light on the controller stop flashing meaning it is no longer in override.
      Second, as long as both motors are moving and the slide extends all the way out/in on both sides, the alignment will be able to be re-synced as shown in the first procedure. If there is a larger issue than it may not resume properly and become misaligned again at next use. At which time you should have a repair facility take a look at it.

    Curious... I tried this but there are no lights on my controller at all. It goes about half way out then sounds like the rear motor just gives up and the forward motor spins a few revolutions then quits as well. I've tried the resynch thing 3 times letting it go out and in like you showed. It always gives up about half way. So I went outside and found the controller box like you showed but mine has no lights at all. I did the 6 then hold 7th push on the button anyway but again no lights. We are in a 2020 Tiffin motorhome and have tried this at two different locations on our trip. One was not level at all and this one is a little unlevel but we have our HWH levelers deployed at both locations to get us perfectly level because we were told never to put slides in or out unless you are level. I'm curious why we have no LEDs at all on either slide controller but they both run? The bed slide does work. Both are Schwintek. The front 2 slides are hydraulic and work fine. I don't know why they put these crappy electric slide controllers on an expensive motorhome anyway.

    Our 2021 has a roller mounted under the body that rolls on the fabric/facia bottom surface and started ripping that off. Next to where that roller is installed is an uncovered rectangular opening into the interior. I believe the opening (that should be covered with a plastic piece like all the other roller areas) was cut in the wrong place.
    I took in for service after the problem 1st occurred…2nd time used. I explained what I thought was happening, however, dealer just replaced the track system under warranty. This, of course, didn’t fix the actual problem, so it started ‘sticking’ again and went back to service. Jayco refuses to pay dealer to repair, and dealer refuses to pay for their mistake…even though the work order for the first ‘repair’ has my note on what the problem is. It’s a nightmare. We have an RV we can’t use and don’t know what to do.

Hopefully you have resolved the issue by now, but it is possible one of the dipswitches that is on the controller has gotten flipped. Todd… hope you get this comment. I noticed my slide has damaged the floor in a recent trip. Upon further inspection, during the last few inches of bringing the slide in, it’s actually pulling the adjacent wall of the RV with it, as well as scraping the floor. will either of your suggestions help with this?

      The only time you shouldn’t hold the button down for an extended period is when it is in override mode. This disables the cutoff and the slide will keep pushing out or in regardless of resistance. So long story short when in override stop when slide is fully closed or opened. The holding down just in normal operation is different, this allows the motors to completely amp out and stop in a safe mode. I suggest doing the sync method several times. If you call the manufacturer of the unit (Forest River) and give them the last 8 of the vin they should be able to point you in the right direction for the location of the controller.

    Todd, our controllers have no lights displayed at all. What does this mean? One slide is working fine, one is squeaking/squealing horribly when deploying. It stops and starts, eventually going out. To me, it feels out of sync. We’ve tried running in/out a few inches multiple times but that doesn’t help. So, I went to the controller but no lights blinking. Should the lights blink full time? Or, only when there is an error.

    • @GreatAmericanRV

      The controller is only going to blink when there is an error, during operation, or once you put it in override. So if you are looking at it when it is not in one of those situations it won't be active. When you do run it all the way out or in is it flush on both sides? Side to side looks fine, no metal shavings, the track looks fine. I ordered CRC Power Lube, based off a different video and plan to try that. There are no marks on the slide that I would assume would be there if it were rubbing against anything. It just stalls frequently and makes a terrible screeching sound. I will add that we had a flex frame issue, it was in a repair shop to be fixed. They also found a leak in that slide and had to replace the floor. I’m guessing the slide was completely removed to make the repairs. The trouble has started since that repair was made, in Indiana. I’d take it back to them but we’re in Florida for the winter. The system will have to be removed and the tracks put back in sequence. The sync that is described in the video is only side to side. Also, note that these slides don't take lubrication, except maybe on the wiper seals, you can also lubricate the small white wheel that is below the bottom track behind the wiper seal. Do not lubricate the tracks attached to the sides, this will attract dirt and debris and mess the mechanism up even more. Hope this info helps, but unfortunately, it sounds like you will need to have it repaired by a shop. -Todd

    Did NOT help us. Our slide is stuck all the way out, as I write this. I disconnected the cables to the motors and can not budge the slide-out. How the F do you manually override and push a full wall slide in? Why isn't there a handle or wrench to manually crank the slide in or out? F'ed up Schshit system.

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  2 года назад

      Sorry you’re having some trouble, if you look at the outside of the slide above the top gear track there is a square bit screw in the gasket on each side. Once you remove the screws you will need a flat head screw driver to pop the motors up and out. You can see the motors in between the wiper seals just below the screws. Once this is done you can push the slide in. You can put a 2x4 to keep it from sliding out if you can get the motors back in. This is important before you try to move it. -Todd

    Re-syncing is not helping me. No matter how many times I try it still doesn't operate correctly. I can operate it manually thru the overide but it will not operate normally. Why are there so many problems with these slides, it is a horrible design and there are tons of videos and forums complaining about these

      There could be an issue in how it was installed. If the manufacturer didn’t follow the correct measurements for alignment that could be causing the issue of consistent failure. The mechanisms are not as terrible as they seem, but unfortunately are more susceptible to failure if the manufacturer didn’t follow the strict guidelines for install. I suggest having a dealership check the measurements between the gear track and outer bracket of the wall. It should be 2 1/2” with 1/16” on all four tracks. They should very well know what to look for if you mention this. -Todd

      @@AJ-hl9ig thought of a way to explain it. if you measure from where the wiper seal meets the worm gear track to the outside edge of the metal framing that is screwed in vertically up the stationary wall it should be 2 1/2” within 1/16” tolerance. This measurement should be taken with the slide half way out. This measurement needs to be taken at all 4 tracks. -Todd

    Great tips! I have been a victim of this. I fail to understand why an apparently faulty design is allowed to continue being made! Why are American RV manufacturers so careless and stupid?

    • @GreatAmericanRV
      @GreatAmericanRV  Год назад

      It can't all be blamed on the design. The install by the manufacturer holds a high level of responsibility as well. If they do not install within the proper specifications they will cause damage to the rails.
      But to your credit it's a good question.
      Manufacturers are going to constantly look for new innovations to make things lighter or more cost effective. I've seen competitors coming down the line that have a better system, and will likely take over. Until then we have what we have. While this is a popular issue to have with slide out failures, it's still an effective system and does it's job majority of times when installed properly.

    • @paulsylvester1394
      @paulsylvester1394 Год назад

      @@GreatAmericanRV Every design has a certain sensitivity to how it is installed. But a design that apparently is not easy to install in all cases is inherently not a good design. There is clearly a sophisticated controller running the slide. And good luck finding it and simply accessing it! Put it right on the slide wall! As for working right most of the time, that just isn’t enough! The reliability rate has got to be extremely high or the recovery method must be dirt simple. A trip to the dealer does not cut it when it takes months and hundreds of dollars, and that is only if you bought your rig there.
      It is not about assigning blame but rather like the airline industry. What is the root cause and what is being done to change the situation. Clearly not enough is being done!
