    Luckily, I used to like the grammar so I understand your meticulous explanation. I used to be good at math and I think who likes math likes the grammar too. For me the grammar was easy and I have never understood why it was difficult for children. Unfortunately, I am not good at pronunciation, I got used your tempo and your pronunciation but the last weeks I was very busy with my grandchildren and this is the third lesson which I listen and now I can understand your pronunciation. It's true: " Practice makes perfect."

      After a linking verb (is, am, are, were or was) you don't use the words adjective or noun anymore instead use predicate nominative (PN) or predicate adjective (PA). Fishing is PN, Amazing is PA, Enlightening is PA. they are called Subject Complements

    Excuse me, but doesn't the same rule regarding using possessive applies on the first example as well ?
    I mean if we should use " I don't like Sara's singing " then we should also say " I saw the Russian's writing " because you can't say " The Russian writing was seen ". ( I assume that you meant The Russian = 1 Russian man )

    • @MrSkypelessons
      @MrSkypelessons  3 года назад

      What rule??!!???!?? I like Sarah's singing and I like Sarah singing are BOTH correct (but mean different things). I don't know why you think one is right and one is wrong.

      @@MrSkypelessons
      The rule that you were referring from Fowler's book " the Kings English".
      I didn't ask about Sara's sentence, but the first example which is " I saw the Russian writing ". So according to Mr. Fowler we should say " I saw the Russian's writing" and not " I saw the Russian writing" because you can't say " The Russian writing was seen .." that isn't incorrect but it would change the meaning of sentence.

    • @MrSkypelessons
      @MrSkypelessons  3 года назад

      @@medolove3697 I saw the Russian writing = correct (and writing = participle). I saw the Russian's writing = correct (and writing = gerund). Yes, according to Fowler, this is what we should say. However, this is NOT what we actually do say in reality. In reality, we break the possessive rule for gerunds all the time.

      @@medolove3697 Thanks, I misunderstood your point at first, but yes, you are right: Fowler (rightly) points out that the gerund should take the possessive form, but in reality, very few natives do this (although it was more common in the distant past).

      I don't think so. The non-action verbs such as know for example can't be transformed into participle form "knowing". I think only actions verb can take the participle form.

    hilariously confusing. right around the time the West was moving from a 'things based economy' to a 'services based economy', and the politics was shifting from right to left, the advent of 'theories of English', where Ph.Ds and Masters of English emerge, and language concepts as the 'participle' and 'gerund' are invented - and promoted. why not use something far more descriptive, simplistic and orderly? - 2nd noun. 2nd verb. 2nd order noun. 2nd order verb. etc.
    'gerund' and 'participle' should be considered obsolete, and ordered into the trash-bin of history. have you ever in all your life heard those words until recently? - just shows how utterly useless those words have become.
