Freeholders aren't really the problem. They own the building and the and it's on. Leaseholders, despite what Shelagh believes own NOTHING. You are not the 'owner' of your flat. The real problem, and where the blame lies, is the PROPERTY MANAGEMENT companies employed by the freeholders to ensure their assets, the property. are maintained. At the cost of the person living there. Who owns nothing. And the builders and developers who engage these companies. It's fraud. People often aren't told of the leasehold status and if you've not bought leasehold before you might not be aware of the implications. Whole estates are not adopted, yet people still have to pay council tax. Double bubble. Companies like FirstPort Property Services. The worst of the worst.
totally agree, you own a piece of paper and an inch of it gets torn off every year until nothing is left and you have to buy your property (there's a joke) all over again, i renewed my lease five years ago thinking i had sold, it fell through (people dying, what a bugger) and now it's run out again, and if that weren't bad enough we've had BOTH political parties SHOUTING "don't touch leasehold" so i voted green twice cos you can't trust anyone. i planedd in moving after three years when my son finished local school - i've been trapped living somewhere i don;'t want to burning £300 a month in service that is third rate for 11 years. it's an open prison, i can't even walk away without the management company chasing me for service charge.
We got a 88,000 pound bill for fire safety regulations , we tried to get a quote from a local company and we got 14,000 pounds for most of the work needed
Bought a leasehold at age 22 was not told about service charge by either solicitors. Hoped to move on to freehold but got diagnosed with brain tumour had to leave work then had cancer. Living on UC from hand to mouth because I’m disabled. Now my cladding is fire risk will be sent a bill of tens of thousands pounds to replace this. I will end up homeless because of fire risk cladding that was sold to me and now I will have to replace. I have no job, cancer, chemo and now this huge bill for fire risk cladding what are we supposed to do. I have two kids no savings. This government is fleecing us leaseholders and basically robbing us legally u see old laws! This should not be allowed to continue. We’re from a council estate we’re made to pay for all repairs to things we don’t use, we have to pay for roofs we don’t use, we share a sewage stack with the neighbors above but I have to pay for repairs not them because it comes in to my property. I don’t own the building or the windows and only “rent” the property long term and only own the plaster inside but I have to repair and fix the windows, the doors the roof, the communal bins. It’s absolutely ridiculous. The charges are outrageous and the laws need to be changed because it’s day light robbery. Clearly theses corporations have the sticky fingers in the MP’s pocket and lining them and this is why they continue to have these policies and not change in favour for the leaseholders.
The main cause of the rise in building and estate maintenance services is GREED, by companies like FirstPort. (Worst Port). They are trying to maximise their profits ahead of being shut down. Hopefully.
There is no logical reason for ground rent to be anything more than a peppercorn per annum.
