Whenever there's one that's very difficult for non-Americans like this, the solve rate is often low. Nobody outside the US is going to know the slang terms for a dollar, so expecially with the obscure "trumpet" mushroom too, it left me scratching around trying to work out purple. Got there in the end with a couple of mistakes though!
To be fair, nobody really uses that terminology for a dollar, well maybe buck and occasionally single. But clam and smacker is really only used when talking like a 1930s gangster.
Some days are difficult some days are easy. Sometimes as non native I google a lot of words, sometimes none. If you do not like the clues about American terms or culture maybe do not solve a word game created by an American newspaper?
@@nolowputts Ha, nothing wrong with talking like a 1930s gangster. Might try to import those words over here. I did eventually recognise Buck and Single to be fair so obviously wasn't too far off the curve.
@@jenemica Not sure why you're being so negative, I had no problems with the puzzle at all, of course it's going to be Americanised! Just giving my thoughts on the difficulty for people today. For what it's worth I never Google any words in the puzzle, I just roll with the difficulty and guess if I have to. I'm on 93% solve rate so while I'm no Chris, clearly the American culture has got through to me somewhat!
Every year a single morel mushroom grows in the middle of our yard, my wife doesn’t let me pick it though because we also have fly agaric mushrooms in the yard and she is overly paranoid about some kind of cross contamination poisoning.

I had Green and Purple left and fell victim for "Hole up", "Buck up", "Clam up", and "Belly up" and was floored when that wasn't the right connection.
Exactly the same for me! Thankfully it didn’t take long to see the actual purple category next.
Same for me and I also fell victim to not liking mushrooms. The names didn't jump out at me.
So I wasn't so crazy with thinking "_____up." This does actually work, if you Google them.😊
I dunno, I think getting Purple second should be worth at least 1 bonus point. Oh, well.
That last mistake BELLY HOLE CLAM BUCK was "_____-UP"

"Clam" just reminds me of the Flintstones, where they were occasionally shown using actual clams as money.

Kudos on getting the mushrooms. Few people seem to have heard of morel.
That was my first and only connection that I got. But then again, I like to cook.
