Thanks for this Jamie. I make custom themes from scratch for my clients now I'd like to generate some passive income so selling my themes seems the next logical step.
But, what about doing updates and maintenance to the theme, like future security patching and making sure it is compatible with future WordPress and plugins updates?
Looks great! They should add an option to upload thumbnail to that theme export page. Or, what if it created one for you on export? That would be cool.
If we make them using blocksy pro and stackable pro - will we be able to sell those themes? What would be the condition for it? WOuld we need to ask them to buy the pro versions to edit?
Hey Jamie, thank you for making WordPress easier for all of us. When creating my own theme from your starter theme: Which license do you use - and how do I handle copyright and giving credit?
Quite funny that theme designers are getting salty at this video :-) I welcome the ability to create and adapt themes like this, because I've bought themes that were 'professionally designed' but then the designer just got bored and dropped support 6 months later, leaving me with the proverbial baby. If I wanted to hack and support my own theme, I'd have built it from scratch (and yes I know how, but I also know how much of a faff that is to do and support). So having no-code solutions is ace....although we are far from it being 100% perfect yet, but one day I'm hoping to never need to use the theme editor or custom CSS.
Hi Jamie, I was wondering if you have a video about how to put 2 different fonts in a heading with Wordpress Gutenberg Blocks. I'd like to have one word with a script font. Thanks!

Yeah. Won't cost you an annual fee and will be fast and score good on page speed tests. I swapped from premium themes to a page builder and it was nice for a while but after 3-4 years of paying for Pro, I got sick of my sites getting slower every year.
When you create your own theme, it is no longer based on the starter theme. So if you started with TwentyTwentythree and then saved your changes in your new theme, your new theme will not be affected with twentytwentythree updates. Right, Jamie?
So we are encouraging non technical people to start selling themes ? Wordpress is bad enough with everyone creating plugins which need updating every day and breaking everything else. Wordpress has become a mess. I’ve lost track on how many plugins I’ve bought which have been buggy and not updated (including yours Jamie I’m afraid). It’s just utter madness. Wordpress need to build in decent functionality so you don’t need all this rubbish. Reminds me of the shoe shops in hitch hikers guide to the galaxy.
Hi Stuart, the beauty about this process and block themes is that nothing can break. It's a clear separation of design and functionality, which was how wordpress themes were always intended to be designed and architected. Much of the issue you've experienced in the past, has been with plugins conflicting with each other, and using themes with in-built pagebuilders only compounds this. The great thing about block themes, and this process is that we are just using core wordpress to create the theme....no plugins, just core, which is really stable. What this opens up, is the opportunity for designers (non-technical) to create designs for websites and that's an incredibly positive step in my opinion.
@@jamiewp I did remove my page builder stuff (which worked flawlessly until Gutenberg etc) even with all that gone you still need so many plugins or plugins with blocks. Even a simple table needs a plugin. Want to do a query then you need a plugin unless I am missing something?
Yes I know there is one built in but as always they tend to be limited on their use. You really need to use things like postx to get it to work properly. If the built in stuff worked well and often it lacks simple things. Plug-ins wouldn’t be needed which they are.

The only way to do that is to put into the page templates - you see quite a few themes using the front page template for this

Nope this is using Wordpress block themes

what about ACF?
only show 5 options, no cloning option......
Export your theme
[Export the activated theme with user changes]
Create sibling of your theme

Overwrite your theme
[Save USER changes as THEME changes and delete the USER changes. Your changes will be saved in the theme on the folder.]
Create blank theme
[Generate a boilerplate "empty" theme inside of this site's themes directory.]
Create a style variation
[Save user changes as a style variation of your theme.]
so, which option should i choose?
What are you wanting to do ?
@@jamiewp I want to clone my current theme.(I am using a child theme. if I clone it, will it be clean and without relying on the parent theme?)
I am assuming if you decided to sell outside of gumroad, you would have to have a business license to report sales? Is that accurate?
It really depends where you are based - you will still legally need to declare all income for tax purposes
