You don't need to make the pump fake look like your actual shot. That's one of those oldschool sayings that are just untrue. It's all contextual. Sometimes if the defender is coming very quick and i already made a shot before i just need to look at the rim with intent to shoot and it'll get them jumping. Most of the times a good pump fake begins with a real intention to shoot, and then you stop the shooting motion if you see you're defender coming out out of control.
