I have the exact same turntable. Bought it in 1972. I recently brought it out of storage and hooked it up to my vintage Sansui. My Rotel has a few scratches and will use your method to clean up the dust cover.

If it wasn't for the sticker you could have tried a "flame polish" on it. done right, it gets rid of the foggy mess after a wet/dry sand
I don't know much about that method Rick - will have to read up on it! Stickers can always be removed and re-applied.
